Preparation and thermal responsiveness of microencapsulated fluorinated liquids for automatic fire extinguishing

Hao Liu,Tianwei Zhang,Man Zhang,Cunwei Zhang,Zidong Guo,Yuhai Zhang,Haoran Chen,Yunchen Wu,Guiyun Zhang

Most early-stage fires originating in small confined spaces may not be effectively mitigated by automatic fire-extinguishing systems. Leveraging the unique controlled release capability and barrier properties of microcapsules presents a promising avenue for developing multifunctional and intelligent fire-extinguishing agents tailored for early-stage fire suppression. This paper introduces two types of microcapsules that integrate automatic detection and fire extinguishing functions, utilizing fluorinated liquids specifically perfluoro(2-methyl-3-pentanone) and 1,1,1,2,2,3,4,5,5,5 decafluoro-3-methoxy-4(trifluoromethyl)-pentane as core materials. The preparation process was optimized, and the thermal response of the microcapsules was evaluated by directly incorporating them into combustible materials. The results indicated a correlation between the preparation method, coating efficiency, and thermal stability of microcapsules with the core-wall materials. When the fluoride solution in the core material reaches the thermal response threshold temperature, the gas pressure generated during vaporization and phase change can break through the shell, enabling early active fire protection. Beyond a specific threshold of additive microcapsules in the material, the material exhibits self-extinguishing potential during combustion. In cases where the additive amount falls short of achieving self-extinguishing, the fire-resistant performance of materials can be enhanced through various measures. For instance, reducing the amount of fire-extinguishing agents, delaying the ignition time of fuel, and lowering the heat release rate during combustion are effective strategies. Moreover, the degree of improvement is related to the additional amount and the type of core-wall materials. The thermal-response mechanism of microcapsules constitutes a comprehensive mechanism with physical and chemical effects. The finding of this research offer a new technical approach for microencapsulating high-boiling-point gas extinguishing agents, facilitating intelligent and precise prevention of early fires resulting from combustible materials.

Polydopamine-modified black phosphorus/microcapsule composite material used to enhance the solar thermal conversion and self-healing performance of SBS modified asphalt

Denghui Ren,Hao Jiang,Shencheng Fan,Liu Song,Yating Luo,Fang Lai,Ruinan Pei,Qingzhao Yang,Jing Li

This study developed UV-responsive microcapsules to enhance the self-healing properties of asphalt, addressing the limitations of low survival rates and single-release mechanisms in current encapsulated rejuvenators. The microcapsules, featuring a urea-formaldehyde shell embedded with polydopamine-coated black phosphorus nanosheets (BP/DA) and microalgae bio-oil as the core, can convert solar energy into thermal energy, promoting proactive self-healing in asphalt materials. BP/DA expands the microcapsules' light absorption range, enhancing their photothermal conversion efficiency. When incorporated into styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)-modified asphalt at a 1.5% dosage, the microcapsules (BP/DA/MC) improved the mechanical properties: ductility increased by 13.7%, softening point rose by 2%, and penetration decreased by 3.3%. The storage modulus (G′) at 46 and 64°C increased by 35.9% and 24.3%, respectively, compared to SBS asphalt. Additionally, the ductility self-healing rate of BP/DA/MC/SBS asphalt improved by 209.7%, with a healing index (HI) of 78.16%. The microcapsules also demonstrated excellent photothermal conversion, increasing the asphalt's temperature by 22.6% under identical lighting conditions. This research offers a new method for developing intelligent self-healing asphalt with multi-mechanism activation, providing theoretical support for future third-generation microcapsule-based asphalt with remote-controlled release and activation response.

Phase Separation Pathways of Chiral Macromolecules at Liquid–Liquid Interfaces

Xiaotong Chen,Yuchen Yang,Yunhui Wen,Shaowei Shi,Weichao Shi

The phase behavior of chiral macromolecules is one of the key subjects in chemistry, biology, and materials science. Here we take poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and mesomeric poly(D, L-lactic acid) (mPLA) mixtures as a model system and investigate the phase separation behaviors in double emulsion droplets. At high mPLA compositions, phase separation creates transient bicontinuous networks or discrete domains at the liquid–liquid interface and eventually generates eyeball-like microcapsules. At low mPLA compositions, phase separation occurs first but is trapped by the lateral crystallization of PLLA, leading to spindle-like microcapsules. The dynamic pathways of phase separation can be further modulated by PLA-based amphiphilic block copolymers, so that microcapsules are configurable between the eyeball-, spindle-, and Janus-like structures. By comparing with phase separation on a plane substrate, we unveil that the phase separation dynamics at the double emulsion interfaces are significantly affected by interfacial properties and hydrodynamic effects. This work clarifies the phase transition dynamics of PLLA/mPLA mixtures at liquid–liquid interfaces and sheds insight into the phase behaviors of chiral macromolecules for their structural modulation.

Zhou Jianhua,Li Sitong,Niu Zhuanli

Combining phase change materials with textile materials is an important method to give textiles temperature regulation function. Herein, the microcapsulated phase change materials with ZnO@ZIF-8@SiO 2 -doped polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as hybrid shell (ZZS/PMMA MPCMs) were prepared through Pickering emulsion polymerization with n-octadecane (C18) as core and ZnO@ZIF-8@SiO 2 grafted with polyacrylic acid (MZZS) particles possessing radiation cooling performance as stabilizers. The effect of MZZS content on the morphology of phase change microcapsule, radiation cooling and temperature regulation properties of coated cotton fabrics was studied. The results indicated that when the MZZS content increased to 3.0 wt%, the prepared phase change microcapsule’s encapsulation efficiency was 50.34%, showing excellent latent heat storage and release properties. Furthermore, compared with the uncoated cotton fabric, the rising and dropping rate of the temperature of ZZS/PMMA MPCMs coated cotton fabric was much slower in different seasons, indicating excellent radiation cooling and temperature regulation performance.

Haochen Wu,Tao Jiang,Xiaohong Chen,Ping Liu

Foodborne illnesses remain a significant concern in the realm of public health. Managing food spoilage and controlling pathogenic microorganisms rely on synthetic chemicals, regrettably accompanied by various unfavourable attributes. In response to the escalating demand for innovative and secure alternative approaches, there has been a surge in the investigation of naturally sourced agents possessing antimicrobial characteristics, among which essential oils stand out. This study focuses on improving the stability of clove essential oil (CEO), and to achieve controlled release, the CEO microcapsules are prepared by solvent evaporation method with ethyl cellulose as the wall material. The results indicated optimum technological conditions: wall material mass fraction of 3%, core wall ratio of 1.0:1.5, emulsifier mass fraction of 8% and shear rate of 14000 r/min. Under these conditions, the encapsulation efficiency is 81.28%, and the yield rate is 90.58%. The CEOM were spherical with a size of 1.43-3.92 μm and had good thermal stability. The microcapsule under 50% ethanol showed a faster release rate and significant release amount. The microencapsulation of CEO with ethyl cellulose can not only improve the stability of CEO but also realise the controlled release of CEO, which has tremendous application value in antibacterial packaging. Factors Affecting the Release Behavior and Sustained Repair Effect of Self-Healing Microcapsules Encapsulating Rejuvenators in Asphalt Mastic

Bin Li,Fengjiang Li,Yanqiu Bi,Xuan Luo,Xiaoling Zou,Weina Wang

Microcapsule technology is a promising approach for enhancing the self-healing ability of asphalt pavements. In this study, the self-healing behavior of melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) microcapsules was investigated. The microcapsules were synthesized using an in situ polymerization method. The proposed healing indicators, combined with fluorescence tracing technology, were used to evaluate the release behavior and sustained repair effect of the microcapsules at different damage levels, healing intervals, aging degrees, and healing temperatures. The results showed that most microcapsules survived at low damage levels, whereas larger microcapsules were more likely to rupture and release the rejuvenators. The sustained self-healing effect of the microcapsules could effectively repair internal damage within the asphalt pavement over an extended service life. Aged asphalt was particularly susceptible to the activation of microcapsules, leading to increased self-healing and the provision of additional rejuvenators for damaged asphalt mastic. Additionally, the self-healing of asphalt mastic with microcapsules had a critical temperature threshold. Microcapsules could enhance the fatigue and self-healing performance of asphalt mastic only when the healing temperature was below a certain value; otherwise, they may lead to adverse effects. The critical healing temperature threshold for thin-film oven testing (TFOT)-aged asphalt increased from approximately 30°C to about 45°C after PAV aging. This study provides a better understanding of the self-healing behavior of microcapsule asphalt, as well as the factors affecting the release behavior and sustained repair effects of the microcapsules. These results can be used to optimize the design and implementation of microcapsule technology to enhance the durability and sustainability of asphalt pavements.

Preparation, thermal properties and thermal reliabilities of microencapsulated n-octadecane with acrylic-based polymer shells for thermal energy storage

Xiaolin Qiu,Guolin Song,Xiaodong Chu,Xuezhu Li,Guoyi Tang

Microencapsulation of n -octadecane with crosslinked p(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) and p(butyl acrylate) (PBA) as shells for thermal energy storage was carried out by a suspension-like polymerization. Divinylbenzene (DVB) and pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA) were employed as crosslinking agents. The surface morphologies of the microencapsulated phase change materials (microPCMs) were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thermal properties, thermal reliabilities and thermal stabilities of the as-prepared microPCMs were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The microPCMs prepared by using DVB exhibit greater heat capacities and higher thermal stabilities compared with those prepared by using PETA. The thermal resistant temperature of the microPCM with BMA–DVB polymer was up to 248   °C. The phase change temperatures and latent heats of all the as-prepared microcapsules varied little after 1000 thermal cycles.

Enhanced thermal and mechanical properties of PW-based HTPB binder using polystyrene (PS) and PS–SiO2 microencapsulated paraffin wax (MePW)

Xia Gao,Tianbo Zhao,Guan Luo,Baohui Zheng,Hui Huang,Rui Ma,Xue Han,Yuqiao Chai

Polystyrene (PS) microencapsulated paraffin wax (MePW) and PS–SiO 2 MePW were used to improve the form-stability of PW in hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene-derived polyurethane (HTPB) binder. HTPB matrix containing different contents of PS MePW, PS–SiO 2 MePW, and PW were prepared. The chemical composition, crystallinity, microstructure, heat capacities, thermal stabilities, thermal reliabilities, leakage, and mechanical properties of the composites were compared using Fourier transforms infrared spectroscope, X-ray diffractometer, scanning electronic microscope, differential scanning calorimeter, thermo-gravimetric analyzer, thermal cycling test, leaking test, compression, and tensile tests, respectively. The results showed that the MePW/PW/HTPB composites were prepared without chemical reaction. The thermal stability and mechanical properties of PS–SiO 2 MePW/PW/HTPB increased more dramatically than that of PS MePW/PW/HTPB. With the increasing contents of MePWs, the PW leakage of the composites decreased, especially for PS MePW/PW/HTPB. Consequently, the MePW/PW/HTPB composites possess a potential application for PW-based polymer-bonded explosive system. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135 , 46222.

Modified Phase Change Microcapsules with Calcium Carbonate and Graphene Oxide Shells for Enhanced Energy Storage and Leakage Prevention

Zhuoni Jiang,Wenbin Yang,Fangfang He,Changqiong Xie,Jinghui Fan,Juying Wu,Kai Zhang

Environmentally friendly microencapsulated phase change materials (MEPCMs) with calcium carbonate (CaCO3) shells were modified with graphene oxide (GO), and the effects of GO content and methodology on MEPCMs were examined. The core–shell structure of MEPCMs and crystal structure of CaCO3 shells were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The thermal properties and stability of MEPCMs were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), suggesting that the addition of GO contributed to improving the heat storage capacity and thermal stability of MEPCMs. When the GO content was 1.0 wt %, the encapsulation ratio of MEPCMs was as high as 73.19%, and the leakage rate was reduced by 89.6% compared to the MEPCMs without GO. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of GO modified MEPCMs were improved significantly. The considerable latent heat storage, thermal stability, thermal conductivity, leakage-prevention, and mechanical properties of GO modified paraffin@CaCO3 MEPCMs offer potential in green energy applications.

Survival and activation behavior of microcapsules in self-healing asphalt mixture

Bin Li,Guoqiang Sun,Daquan Sun,Tong Lu,Jianmin Ma,Yue Deng

Microcapsule technology exhibits great potential in improving the healing efficiency of asphalt mixture and prolonging the service life of the pavement. The capsule should be kept intact in the mixing and compaction process of asphalt mixture, whereas broken to release the healing agents in time when cracks encounter it. This paper aims to investigate the survival and activation behavior of microcapsules in asphalt mixture during construction and service period. By means of the in situ polymerization method, the microcapsules of various sizes were prepared and their particle size distribution, core material content, shell permeability, and other properties were characterized. Based on the quantitative analysis principle of Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), the influence of microcapsule size and mixing temperature on the survival rate of microcapsules was analyzed. Meanwhile, the morphology and size distribution of surviving microcapsules was obtained via fluorescence microscope (FM). In addition, the morphologies of microcapsules before and after the bitumen bond strength (BBS) test and dynamic shear rheological (DSR) test were observed by FM to examine the releasing behavior of microcapsules. Finally, the fatigue-rest-fatigue test was performed to investigate the influence of microcapsule size on the healing efficiency of aged asphalt mastic. The results showed that the survival rate could be improved by reducing the construction temperature and the microcapsules size. The loss of microcapsules was more likely to happen in the mixing process rather than in the compaction process. Microcapsules with larger sizes were easier to be activated to remarkably enhance the healing efficiency of the aged asphalt mastic. Notably, the microcapsules with appropriate size are recommended to be added to the mixtures to ensure that the microcapsules survive in the construction process and are activated when cracks appeared.

Phase-Changing Microcapsules Incorporated with Black Phosphorus for Efficient Solar Energy Storage

Hao Huang,Tongyu Shi,Rui He,Jiahong Wang,Paul K. Chu,Xue-Feng Yu

A new solar energy storage system is designed and synthesized based on phase-changing microcapsules incorporated with black phosphorus sheets (BPs). BPs are 2D materials with broad light absorption and high photothermal performance, which are synthesized and covalently modified with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to produce the PMMA-modified BPs (mBPs). With the aid of PMMA, the mBPs and phase-changing materials (PCM, eicosane) are encapsulated together to form microcapsules. The microencapsulated eicosane and mBPs (mBPs-MPCM) composites exhibit a high latent heat of over 180 kJ kg −1 , good thermal reliability, as well as excellent photothermal characteristics inherited from BPs. Owing to the direct contact in the integrated mBPs-MPCM composites, the thermal energy generated by mBPs is transferred to eicosane immediately giving rise to three times higher efficiency in solar energy storage compared to microcapsules with mBPs on the surface. The mBPs-MPCM composites have great potential in solar energy storage applications and the concept of integrating photothermal materials and PCMs as the core provides insights into the design of high-efficiency solar energy storage materials.

Pretilachlor Releasable Polyurea Microcapsules Suspension Optimization and Its Paddy Field Weeding Investigation

Chen Hongjun,Liu Xiu,Deng Shuqi,Wang Hongkun,Ou Xiaoming,Huang Linya,Li Jingbo,Jin Chenzhong

In this study, pretilachlor was encapsulated into polyurea microcapsules prepared by water-initiated polymerization of polyaryl polymethylene isocyanate and eventually made into pretilachlor microcapsules suspension (PMS). We used response surface methodology (RSM) combined with the Box–Behnken design (BBD) model to optimize the formulation of PMS. The encapsulation efficiency (EE) of PMS was investigated with respect to three independent variables including wall material dosage (X1), emulsifier dosage (X2), and polymerization stirring speed (X3). The results showed that the regression equation model had a satisfactory accuracy in predicting the EE of PMS. To achieve an optimal condition for PMS preparation, the dose of wall material was set to 5%, the dose of emulsifier was set to 3.5% and the polymerization stirring speed was set to 200 rpm. The EE of PMS was up to 95.68% under the optimized condition, and the spherical shape with smooth surface morphology was observed. PMS was also proven to have delayed release capability and in vivo herbicidal activity against barnyard grass [Echinochloa crusgalli (L.) Beauv.] with an LC50 value of 274 mg/L. Furthermore, PMS had efficient weed management compared to commercially available 30% pretilachlor emulsifier (PE), showing a promising potential application for weeding paddy fields.
