Artificial lung membranes are the heart for extracorporeal oxygenation. Hereinto, the nonporous PDMS-based membranes have excellent biocompatibility, and also isolation ability to both blood and harmful matters. Nevertheless, their CO 2 /O 2 selectivity, in the conventional cases using pure-oxygen sweeping stream, is not enough to accomplish sufficient CO 2 removal in balance with O 2 addition. In this work, the oxygenation mode using oxygen-enriched stream, faithfully based on the permeation mechanism, is established to overcome this bottleneck. To neutralize the negative impacts caused by lowering oxygen content and its partial pressure, PDMS-based composite membranes with ultra-thin selective layer to enhance mass transfer have been fabricated successfully. The experiments manifest that the selective layer, on the basic condition that the composite structure is stable enough to make surface modification and realistic utilization, is decreased to 376 nm on the porous substrates. O 2 and CO 2 permeation rates through the ultimate membrane samples have been enhanced to 502 GPU and 4117 GPU, respectively. In this instance, the essential oxygenation could be sustained with O 2 partial pressure less than 446 mmHg in the sweeping stream. The minimum membrane area for a common treatment case is 0.05 square meters. Once the membrane area is increased to 0.18 square meters, the sterile air after purification could be directly used for oxygenation. In comparison to the oxygenation devices being used currently, membrane area can be saved by about 90 %, which is highly significant to reduce the injuring influence on blood cells. All in all, the artificial lung membranes with ultra-thin PDMS coating layer have promising future in realistic utilization.

Dense Janus membranes (JMs) are potential candidates in hypersaline wastewater treatments for membrane distillation (MD). However, dense surface layers generally add obvious membrane mass transfer resistance, limiting its practical application. In this study, a novel dense JM was facilely developed by controlled interfacial polymerization utilizing a phosphonium functional monomer (THPC) on hydrophilic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate. MD desalination performance results showed that the optimized THPC/PVDF JM surprisingly achieved a flux even 21.3% higher than that of its substrate and exhibited robust stability to surfactants, oil, and gypsum. Importantly, potential mechanism of remarkable flux enhancement of dense JMs was revealed. Raman and DSC analyses showed that THPC/PVDF JM with elevated intermediate water content had minimal enthalpy for water evaporation, thus facilitating water vaporization. Dynamic water contact angle measurements, advanced microstructural characterization by positron annihilation spectroscopy and water permeability experiments etc. showed that THPC/PVDF JM with high hydrophilicity and appropriately enlarged effective pore sizes provided strong water-absorption capacity and water permeability, contributing to rapid water replenishment. Both synergistically contributed to an incredible increase in membrane flux. Meanwhile, the dense surface layer, featured by its strong hydrophilicity and abundant hydroxyl groups, effectively prevented complex contaminants from intruding hydrophobic substrate and discouraged oil/gypsum adhesion, ensuring stable MD operation. This study shall provide useful insights and strategies to design high-flux dense JMs with minimal membrane failure propensity, highlighting its great potential for efficient hypersaline wastewater treatments.

Coupling photocatalysis with membrane separation technology becomes one pioneering method to solve the membrane fouling . In this study, Ag@SnS photocatalyst was synthesized and blended with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to fabricate Ag@SnS/PVDF composite membranes via non-solvent induce phase separation (NIPS) method. The results show that with the addition of Ag@SnS, water flux of Ag@SnS/PVDF hybrid membranes increases due to the enhanced membrane hydrophilicity and increased porosity. The optimal hybrid membrane (MAS-2) exhibits the rejection rate of 97.0 % and 95.4 % for BSA and HA accompanied with a water permeance of 578.5 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 . Moreover, MAS-2 membrane reveals excellent self-cleaning ability by photodegradation of HA on membrane surface , and its flux recovery rate (FRR) can achieve 91.7 % after UV irradiation and 95.8 % after 3 h natural sunlight irradiation via photocatalysis regeneration. The heterostructure of Ag@SnS can assist separation of photoinduced electrons and holes by transferring photoinduced electrons to Ag nanoparticles with enhanced photocatalytic activity. After three cycles, the FRR can still reach around 90.0 %, revealing its outstanding cleaning ability. Therefore, the Ag@SnS/PVDF membranes have a foreseeable potential in the field of water treatment due to its high flux performance, self-cleaning ability via photocatalysis process.

The surface properties of non-porous areas (>90 %) of support membranes were often overlooked to influence the performance of nanofiltration (NF) membranes. In this work, the role of the support membrane in interfacial polymerization (IP) during synthesis of NF membrane and consequently on its performance were quantitatively investigated from the perspective of adhesion force for the first time. The support membranes with considerable pore structures and different surface sulfonate (-SO 3 - ) contents were prepared from different concentrations of polyethersulfone/sulfonated polysulfone (PES/SPSf) solutions. The adhesion forces of different support membranes were measured by atomic force microscope (AFM). The IP process between piperazine (PIP) and trimethylbenzoyl chloride (TMC) and the obtained polyamide (PA) layer on the support membranes were monitored by Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). The results indicated that the contents of sulfonic groups on the surface of the support membranes decreased as the casting-solution concentration increased (from 16 % to 28 %) due to a negative segregation phenomenon, which resulted in a decrease in the adhesion force (from 17.9 to 2.6 nN) between the support membranes and PIP monomers. The reduced adhesion force between the support membrane and PIP monomers led to an increase in the PA layer thickness (from 0.8 to 18 nm). Interestingly, the time to reach PA layer thickness equilibrium decreased (from 91 to 23 s). The obtained NF membranes (from PA@PES/SPSf 16 to PA@PES/SPSf 28 ) achieved the pure water permeance from 51.2 to 26.2 L m −2 h −1 ·bar −1 while the salt (Na 2 SO 4 ) rejection from 97.5 to 99.5 %, respectively, was noted. It was demonstrated that controlling the adhesion force between the support membranes and PIP monomers could effectively regulate the structure and the performance of NF membranes. This work would provide valuable insights for designing high-performance NF membranes in practical applications.

This study mainly focused on enhancing oil-membrane electrostatic repulsion towards anti-oil-fouling via electrically conductive hydrophobic membrane in electricity-assisted membrane distillation (MD). Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were coated on commercial membranes to fabricate membrane cathode. For concentrated hexadecane-in-saline water emulsions, the modified membrane exhibited significantly less flux decline, < 5% in dealing with extreme high-concentration oil emulsion (2000 ppm) at cell potential of 3.0 V. The anti-oil-fouling robustness was further confirmed over a continuous three-cycle operation with in-situ DI rinse. The anti-fouling mechanism was systematically discussed regarding the hydrophilicity of the membrane interface , charge repulsion between the oil and membrane cathode as well as slippery property at the liquid-gas-solid triple-phase interface. A modeled fouling rate constant was negatively associated with the calculated capacitive surface charge of the membrane cathode. Thermodynamics analysis suggested enhanced foulant-membrane electrostatic repulsion leads to a significant energy barrier which favored anti-fouling performance. Interestingly, the sliding dynamics of oil droplet along the interface of membrane cathode was found, tuned by the herein weak cell potential, which could also contribute to the fouling mitigation. Our results insight that the electrically conductive membrane cathode could modulate the foulant-membrane interaction which plays an important role in mitigating fouling/wetting occurred at the triple-phase interface.

Hydrogen fuel has been embraced as a potential long-term solution to the growing demand for clean energy. A membrane-assisted separation is promising in producing high-purity H 2 . Molecular sieving membranes (MSMs) are endowed with high gas selectivity and permeability because their well-defined micropores can facilitate molecular exclusion, diffusion, and adsorption. In this work, MXene nanosheets intercalated with Ni 2+ were assembled to form an MSM supported on Al 2 O 3 hollow fiber via a vacuum-assisted filtration and drying process. The prepared membranes showed excellent H 2 /CO 2 mixture separation performance at room temperature. Separation factor reached 615 with a hydrogen permeance of 8.35 × 10 −8 mol·m −2 ·s −1 ·Pa −1 . Compared with the original Ti 3 C 2 T x /Al 2 O 3 hollow fiber membranes, the permeation of hydrogen through the Ni 2+ -Ti 3 C 2 T x /Al 2 O 3 membrane was considerably increased, stemming from the strong interaction between the negatively charged MXene nanosheets and Ni 2+ . The interlayer spacing of MSMs was tuned by Ni 2+ . During 200-hour testing, the resultant membrane maintained an excellent gas separation without any substantial performance decline. Our results indicate that the Ni 2+ tailored Ti 3 C 2 T x /Al 2 O 3 hollow fiber membranes can inspire promising industrial applications.

The use of sacrificial layers on porous substrates has proven to be an effective approach for regulating the interfacial polymerization process and shaping the structure of polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes, thereby addressing the trade-off between permeability and selectivity. However, the synthesis and removal of traditional interlayer materials often require harsh chemicals, generating hazardous waste and posing environmental risks. In this study, we utilized green, non-toxic, and biodegradable β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) nanosheets as an interlayer in the interfacial polymerization process. These nanosheets were subsequently dissolved in water to create crumpled polyamide nanofiltration membranes, avoiding the use of toxic chemicals and significantly reducing environmental impact. With an optimal β-CD loading of 1.0 mg/cm 2 , the resulting membrane exhibited a remarkable water flux of 13.4 LMH/bar, reflecting a 330 % improvement over the reference membrane, along with a 97.9 % Na₂SO₄ rejection. This performance enhancement is linked to enhanced surface hydrophilicity, a higher surface charge density, and a thinner PA layer with an expanded surface area. The membrane also exhibited excellent antifouling properties and long-term separation performance. This innovative, eco-friendly approach represents a significant advancement in membrane technology, providing a sustainable solution for enhanced nanofiltration membrane performance in water treatment applications.

Photothermal-catalytic (PTC) process is a promising way to produce freshwater and clean hydrogen by integrating solar-driven desalination and water splitting. However, efficient solar spectrum utilization coupled with effective mass and thermal management poses key challenges in developing multifunctional PTC systems. Here, a highly stable hydrogel membrane (CdS/MX-HM) that incorporates MXene and in-situ generated CdS as the PTC materials into a customized vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) setup is demonstrated. The CdS/MXene composites utilize the full solar spectrum, with MXene contributing to photothermal ability and serving as a co-catalyst to enhance photocatalytic performance, which are effectively integrated into the membrane system. These functional materials are immobilized within the hydrophilic PVA/chitosan hydrogel layer, which creates a supramolecular network that provides excellent stability and protection while offering an interface for PTC processes. Supported by the hydrophobic PTFE membrane substrate, the integrated system enables fast gas transfer to the permeate, completing the dual-function design. Through systematic optimization of membrane structure and operational parameters, the PTC-VMD system achieves a water flux of 1.63 kg m − 2 h − ¹ and a hydrogen production rate of 3099 µmol m − 2 h −1 under one sun irradiation, demonstrating its potential as a sustainable solution for the water-energy nexus challenge.

Nanofiltration (NF) membrane technology, distinguished for high separation performance and energy efficiency, has been extensively employed in desalination and wastewater treatment. Herein, high-precision 3D printing is used to fabricate robust support layers featuring ideal straight-through micropores, effectively minimizing permeation resistance. To ensure the generation of a high-quality PA selective layer, electrospinning deposits a thin nanofiber layer that divides the support layer surface into fine grids. Finally, interfacial polymerization (IP) forms a PA selective layer on the membrane substrate, which is integrated by 3D-printed support layer and nanofiber layer, yielding a highly permeable composite NF membrane. With reduced permeation resistance and enhanced mechanical strength, the novel 3D-printed composite NF membrane maintains a long-term water permeance of above 22.5 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , about double that of commercial NF270 membranes. Meanwhile, it achieves exceptional Na 2 SO 4 rejection of 97.8 % and superior anti-fouling performance. This study offers a promising approach to fabricating high-performance NF membranes using high-precision 3D printing, providing an innovative and scalable strategy for developing next-generation functional membranes.

Wastewater increases and water shortage crises have forced the rapid innovation of water reuse technologies. Ceramic membrane process (CM), as one of the key technologies for wastewater reclamation, can effectively light the current difficulties. However, membrane fouling and low retention rate are critical bottles that hinder its further application. Herein, we proposed yolk-shell Co 3 O 4 spheres modified CM (CoHM-CM) activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to improve membrane filtration performance. The results showed that the synergistic effect of size exclusion of CM and spatial confinement of CoHM enhanced the collision between organic pollutants and active sites. CoHM-CM/PMS (30 mg CoHM loading combined with 0.5 mM PMS dosage) degraded 100 % of 10 mg/L phenol, bisphenol F and sulfamethoxazole, and 91.29 % of 5 mg/L carbamazepine at an instant of membrane filtration. This process efficiently removed secondary effluent organic matter and reduced membrane fouling resistance by more than 70 % in actual wastewater environments. Besides, the yolk-shell catalytic membrane had strong Co 2+ regeneration capacity and chemical stability. It coupled PMS-generated sulfate radicals and singlet oxygen play a core role in increasing the membrane interface energy barrier and releasing the developing tendency of membrane pore blocking to severe cake layer filtration fouling. The results provided a new opportunity for wastewater remediation based on the yolk-shell modified membrane technology.

Organophilic pervaporation (PV) mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) possess huge potential in organic wastewater treatment with merits of environmentally friendly and high-efficiency. The filler dispersion structure inside MMMs is required to explore in depth to upgrade the PV performance. In this study, an ethoxysilyl functionalized ionic liquid (IL-PTES) modified ZIF-8 nanoparticles (IL-PTES@ZIF-8) were synthesized by one-pot method, and then incorporated into the PDMS matrix to prepare MMMs for PV separation of ethyl acetate (EtOAc) from its diluted aqueous solution. The preferential adsorption performances to EtOAc by IL-PTES, especially for the functions of specific chemical groups in IL-PTES, were researched via molecular dynamicssimulation approach. Furthermore, the IL-PTES covered on ZIF-8 surface could crosslink with PDMS chains, thereby enhancing the interfacial compatibility between ZIF-8 and PDMS. Importantly, the self-aggregated IL-PTES subtly “glued” the nanoparticles together to lead IL-PTES@ZIF-8 a relatively continuous and defect-free distribution state. This condition would lead to a high-efficiency molecular pathway with less polymer phase and much relatively continuous ZIF-8 phase with high selectivity. PV results suggested that the MMMs with 15% IL-PTES@ZIF-8 loading displayed an optimal separation performance with an ultra-high separation factor of 492 (158.7% more than that of pristine PDMS membrane) and normalized EtOAc flux of 4.98 kg μm m −2 ·h −1 (2 times as much as that of pristine PDMS membrane) for separating 1 wt% EtOAc aqueous solution at 30 °C. These findings offered significant advancement toward developing high-performance MMMs enabled by the synergy of MOFs and ionic liquid.

Inspired by the self-polymerization and strong adhesion characteristics of dopamine in aqueous conditions, a novel hydrophilic nanofiltration (NF) membrane was fabricated by simply dipping polysulfone (PSf) ultrafiltration (UF) substrate in dopamine solution. The changes in surface chemical composition and morphology of membranes were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The experimental results indicated that the self-polymerized dopamine formed an ultrathin and defect-free barrier layer on the PSf UF membrane. The surface hydrophilicity of membranes was evaluated through water contact angle measurements. It was found that membrane hydrophilicity was significantly improved after coating a polydopamine (pDA) layer, especially after double coating. The dyes filtration experiments showed that the double-coated membranes were able to reject completely the dyes of brilliant blue, congo red and methyl orange with a pure water flux of 83.7 L/(m 2 ·h) under 0.6 MPa. The zeta potential determination revealed the positively-charged characteristics of PSf/pDA composite membrane in NF process. The salt rejection of the membranes was characterized by 0.01 mmol/L of salts filtration experiment. It was demonstrated that the salts rejections followed the sequence: NaCl < Na 2 SO 4 < MgSO 4 < MgCl 2 < CaCl 2 , and the rejection to CaCl 2 reached 68.7%. Moreover, the composite NF membranes showed a good stability in water-phase filtration process.
