Characterization and biocompatibility of a bilayer PEEK-based scaffold for guiding bone regeneration

Li Shaoping,Jia Cancan,Han Haitong,Yang Yuqing,Xiaowen Yundeng,Chen Zhiyu

Background Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is well known for its excellent physical–chemical properties and biosafety. The study aimed to open up a new method for clinical application of PEEK to reconstruct large-scale bone defects. Methods A bilayer scaffold for bone regeneration was prepared by combining a sulfonated PEEK barrier framework (SPEEK) with a hydrogel layer loaded with aspirin (ASA) and nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) by the wet-bonding of Polydopamine (PDA).Results The hydrogel was successfully adhered to the surface of SPEEK, resulting in significant changes including the introduction of bioactive groups, improved hydrophilicity, and altered surface morphology. Subsequent tests confirmed that the bilayer scaffold exhibited enhanced compression resistance and mechanical compatibility with bone compared to a single hydrogel scaffold. Additionally, the bilayer scaffold showed stable and reliable bonding properties, as well as excellent biosafety verified by cell proliferation and viability experiments using mouse embryo osteoblast precursor (MC3T3-E1) cells. Conclusion The bilayer bone regeneration scaffold prepared in this study showed promising potential in clinical application for bone regeneration.

Enhanced interfacial bonding of AF/PEEK composite based on CNT/aramid nanofiber multiscale flexible-rigid structure

Nan Zhou,Long Xia,Naiyu Jiang,Yingze Li,Hanxiong Lyu,Hongyan Zhang,Xiaohu Zou,Wenbo Liu,Dongxing Zhang

The application of aramid fiber (AF)/polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composites is currently hindered by the inert surface and poor wettability of AF, resulting in weak interfacial adhesion and poor mechanical properties. Surface coating and the introduction of nanostructures have been proven to be effective approaches to address this problem. Herein, a simple hybrid sizing agent has been developed to modify the AF surface, consisting of soluble polyimide (PI) as a compatibilizer, carboxyl-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNT-COOH) as a rigid unit, and aramid nanofibers (ANF) as a flexible component. The synergetic effects of PI and the multiscale flexible-rigid structure (CNT-COOH/ANF) contribute to the formation of chemical and physical bonds between AF and PEEK matrix, further improving the interfacial adhesion and stress transfer efficiency. Attributed to the enhanced wettability and roughness of AF, compared with unsized AF, the flexural strength (220.97 MPa), modulus (10.72 GPa), ILSS (13.36 MPa), and storage modulus (12.93 GPa) of the AF/PEEK composite increase by 132.60%, 99.00%, 182.97%, and 82.70% respectively. Additionally, the flexible-rigid nanonetwork facilitates the penetration of the PEEK resin into pore spaces. This simple and effective approach exhibits promising potential in enhancing the interfacial bonding of AF/PEEK composites.

Polyethyleneimine-functionalized phenolphthalein-based cardo poly(ether ether ketone) membrane for CO2 separation

Yunwu Yu,Junhai Wang,Yan Wang,Wenhao Pan,Changwei Liu,Peng Liu,Lianjie Liang,Changwei Xu,Yunxue Liu

Phenolphthalein-based cardo poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEKWC)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) crosslinking membranes were prepared by solution casting followed by solution reaction at room temperature. The effects of reaction time and PEI content on the membrane structure and gas separation performances were investigated. Light transmittance measure and AFM evidenced the relationship between the microphase separation in PEEKWC-PEI membranes and reaction time. The CO 2 permeability increased with the PEI content, while the N 2 and CH 4 permeability remained nearly constant. This result indicated that only CO 2 was transported by the solution–diffusion mechanism and also that PEI exhibited a positive contribution as a fixed carrier for CO 2 facilitated transport. Meanwhile the PEEKWC-PEI crosslinking membranes showed higher selectivities than the pure PEEKWC membrane. The highest CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 selectivities were about 131 and 122 increasing from 33 and 30, respectively. The crosslinking structure of membranes improved the CO 2 permeability stability.

Electrospinning fiberization of carbon nanotube hybrid sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) ion conductive membranes for a vanadium redox flow battery

Jie Li,Qi Zhang,Sangshan Peng,Daishuang Zhang,Xiaoming Yan,Xuemei Wu,Xue Gong,Qian Wang,Gaohong He

It is challenging for ion conductive membranes to achieve both high proton conduction and low vanadium ion permeation because both ions transport mainly through the hydrophilic domains in membranes. A novel strategy of electrospinning fiberization of the carbon nanotube hybrid sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) is proposed. The improved conductivity is achieved through interconnective proton pathways induced by the electrospun nanofiber . Multiwall carbon nanotubes contain carboxyl groups, align and disperse well in the nanofibers under a strong electrostatic field of 1.3 kV cm −1 as evidenced by TEM and SAXS, therefore result in enhanced hydrogen bond networks for proton hopping. In contrast, vanadium ions cannot transport through hopping and, thus, are blocked by the carbon nanotubes in hydrophilic domains. Consequently, with the carbon nanotube content increasing from 0 to 0.5 wt %, the area resistance of the electrospun membrane remains unchanged, but vanadium ion permeability dramatically decreases by approximately 67.6%. A vanadium redox flow battery assembled with an electrospun membrane exhibits high chemical and capacity stability as well as an energy efficiency of 83.4%, even after 100 cycles at 100 mA cm −2 . These parameters are substantially superior to those of a battery assembled with Nafion 211 with a similar membrane thickness.

Covalent polymer functionalized graphene oxide/poly(ether ether ketone) composites for fused deposition modeling: improved mechanical and tribological performance

Cheng Yang,Jing Xu,Yue Xing,Sijia Hao,Zhidong Ren

This paper presents a novel method using poly(aryl ether ketone) containing pendant carboxyl groups to covalently functionalize graphene oxide. The functionalized graphene oxide (LFG) was used to prepare poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) composites through melt blending. It is found that LFG has great interface adhesion to the PEEK matrix, and just a small amount of it can simultaneously improve the strength and toughness of the composites, while unmodified graphene oxide could enhance strength but cause toughness damage. The tensile and impact strength of composite with 0.1 wt% LFG are 5.7% and 20.5% higher than that of neat PEEK, respectively. In addition, 0.5 wt% LFG composite shows great friction and wear performance with friction coefficient and specific wear rate 27.3% and 18.3% lower than that of PEEK. Furthermore, the composites can be used as practical high-performance additive manufacturing materials because LFG is able to improve the mechanical performance of the fused deposition modeling (FDM) composite samples significantly.

Preparation of a novel poly (ether ether ketone) self-reinforced paper appropriate for harsh conditions

Cong Xin,Ren Jiannan,Xiang Chunhui,Gai Xuzhao,Wang Guibin,Yang Yanchao,Wang Shengdao,Zhang Jiacheng,Luan Jiashuang,Yu Zhenxiang

It remains a challenge to prepare special engineering paper with excellent mechanical properties, high temperature resistance and chemical resistance. The emergence of high-performance fiber provides support for the technical progress of special engineering paper. Herein, a novel method to obtain a novel self-reinforced poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) composite paper (SR-DI-PEEK/paper) by vacuum filtration, impregnation and hot pressing. Specially, PEEK fibers were used as the skeleton fiber and a small amount of aramid pulp was added as the decanted fiber. By optimizing the process of SR-DI-PEEK/paper preparation, the best mechanical properties of SR-DI-PEEK/paper was presented. Compared with the composite paper prepared with Phenolic solution (PF-PEEK/paper) and Polyimide solution (PI-PEEK/paper), the mechanical properties of SR-DI-PEEK/paper was significantly improved. In particular, when the concentration of impregnation was 3 wt%, the tensile index of SR-DI-PEEK/paper reached 51.10 N m g −1 (tensile strength 47.16 kN m −1 ), which is 16.48 times than that of the un-impregnated PEEK/paper (2.86 kN m −1 ). SR-DI-PEEK/paper also exhibited excellent chemical resistance among acid, alkali, and polar solvents, while the tensile index maintained 96.3% after 40 wt% H 2 SO 4 treatment. Besides, SR-DI-PEEK/paper showed superior thermal performance, while the temperatures corresponding to the weight loss of 5% were 574 °C. Graphical abstract

Magnetically aligned composite membranes based on sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) and phosphotungstic acid-loaded magnetic nanoparticles for fuel cell

Dingbo Han,Jingyi Sun,Jing Ge,Han Guo,Jianbo Zhang,Ce Wang,Ping Hu,Yong Liu

In this work, phosphotungstic acid (HPW)-loaded polydopamine-coated magnetic nanoparticles (DMNPs@HPW) were prepared and incorporated into sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) matrix with magnetic field assistance to construct aligned channels to shorten proton transport pathways. The structure of the prepared composite membranes (M-SP/DMNPs@HPW) with magnetic field-induced proton channels was confirmed by SEM. The proton conductivity of M-SP/DMNPs@HPW-2 was significantly improved, with in-plane proton conductivity (σ // ) of 159.3 mS/cm and through-plane proton conductivity (σ ⊥ ) of 129.2 mS/cm in the hydrated state at 80 °C, which were 1.31 and 1.57 times higher than the pristine SPEEK membrane, due to the strong acidity of HPW and acid-base interaction of amine and sulfonic acid groups. Meanwhile, the σ ⊥ of M-SP/DMNPs@HPW-2 was 1.14 times higher than that of SP/DMNPs@HPW-2 membrane prepared without magnetic field assistance. The fuel cell power output of M-SP/DMNPs@HPW-2 was 433 mW/cm 2 , while SP/DMNPs@HPW-2 and pristine SPEEK membranes tested under the same conditions were 360 mW/cm 2 and 277 mW/cm 2 , respectively. The hydrogen crossover of M-SP/DMNPs@HPW-2 was slightly increased compared to SP/DMNPs@HPW-2 due to the construction of through-plane proton transport channels in the membrane.

Crosslinked carbon nanotube/crystalline PEEK composites for high strength and electromagnetic interference shielding under harsh environments

Yu Bai,Shengdao Wang,Guibin Wang,Yanxu Lu,Liubo Liang,Xiaohan Mei,Shiyu Wang,Chunqi Guo,Jianpeng Jiao,Xinyuan Shi,Shuling Zhang

With the rapid development of lightweight technologies and information systems, commercial polymer-based electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composites are increasingly inadequate for the complex structures and harsh operating conditions of aerospace electronic devices due to their corrosion sensitivity and low strength. Achieving high mechanical strength, EMI shielding effectiveness, and stable performance in harsh environments, such as high temperatures and corrosive media, remains a challenge. In this study, phenylacetylene groups were electrochemically grafted onto carbon nanotube (CNT) films to form phenylacetylene-grafted CNT (Ph-CNT), which was then combined with soluble phenylacetylene-capped ketimine polyetheretherketone (An-Ph-PEEK). Acidification of An-Ph-PEEK created crystalline phenylacetylene-capped PEEK (Ph-PEEK), and thermal crosslinking of phenylacetylene groups yielded crosslinked Ph-CNT/crystalline Ph-PEEK (cc@Ph-CNT/Ph-PEEK) composites. These composites exhibited high tensile strength (>240 MPa at 25 °C) and EMI shielding effectiveness (52–81 dB in the X-band across 25–250 °C), attributed to enhanced interfacial interactions and the stability of the crosslinked structure. The mechanical and EMI shielding properties were retained after prolonged exposure to corrosive media, thanks to the crystallinity of Ph-PEEK. Additionally, the composites exhibited photothermal antibacterial and electric de-icing capabilities. The high-performance cc@Ph-CNT/Ph-PEEK composites show promising potential for applications in harsh environments.

Enhanced antibacterial activity of copper sulfide/polyetheretherketone biocomposites

Pan Yusong,Luo Wenjie,Liu Xinyu,Peng Ling,Huang Run,Lin Xiuling,Xie Yinghai

The favorable antibacterial properties of the orthopedic implants can effectively reduce the risk of postoperative bacterial infection. Herein, CuS/PEEK biocomposites with an excellent antibacterial activity were successfully prepared by the method of cold pressing in combining with sintering molding technology. The investigation on the antibacterial properties revealed that the CuS/PEEK biocomposites exhibited superior antibacterial ability against both S. aureus and E. coli , whose antibacterial rates were 99.87% and 99.89%, respectively, while the CuS content in the bicomposites was up to 5%. Moreover, The antibacterial rates of CuS/PEEK composites against S. aureus and E. coli were as high as 99.98% after bacterial strain and CuS/PEEK co-cultivation for 15 min under light irradiation, indicating that the light irradiation and CuS/PEEK composites have the synergistic effect on the antibacterial activity. The antibacterial mechanisms verified that the photo-thermal effect of CuS and the continuous release of Cu 2+ and S 2- ions in the composites played an important role for the improving antibacterial activity of CuS/PEEK composites. 3D printing of damage-tolerant bone scaffolds with bioinspired hierarchical porous structures

Zhuo Huang,Zheng Zhu,Min Liu,Bing Ye,Wei Chang,Helezi Zhou,Xiaodong Guo,Bin Wu,Wei Huang

Tissue engineering scaffolds with hierarchical porous structures has been a promising strategy for healing large bone defects. The fabrication of multiscale porous structures resembling real bone tissues presents a great challenge. In addition, as the porosity increases, the mechanical strength of scaffolds decreases dramatically, leading to catastrophic failure of scaffolds under external loadings. In the current work, a cryogenic 3D printing technique of fabricating hierarchical porous hydroxyapatite (HA) and polyether ether ketone (PEEK) composite scaffolds was proposed. Both pure HA and HA/PEEK composite scaffolds with porosity ranging from 60% to 80% were successfully fabricated. Submillimeter scale pores (∼300 µm), microscale pores (∼10 µm), and nanopores (∼500 nm) were integrated in the 3D-printed scaffolds. Because of the hierarchically arrangement of pores, the printed HA scaffolds show an unusual long plateau strain during compressions, indicating excellent damage tolerance. The HA/PEEK composite scaffold can withstand compression strains up to 80% without disintegration, showing even better damage resistance. Compared to traditional porous ceramic bone scaffolds, the cryogenic 3D-printed scaffolds show extraordinary specific mechanical strength and damage tolerance by keeping high volume percentage of pores at the same time. The degradation capability of HA nanoparticles in vitro and cellular activity testing of the scaffolds further demonstrates the potential application in bone tissue repair.

A comparative study of side-chain-type poly(ether ether ketone) anion exchange membrane functionalized with different hetero-cycloaliphatic quaternary ammonium groups

Dan Yao,Tonghui Wei,Lichao Shang,Hui Na,Chengji Zhao

Anion exchange membranes based on side-chain-type quarternized poly(ether ether ketone)s (QPEEKs), containing different hetero-cycloaliphatic quaternary ammonium groups, were prepared via a multi-step procedure, including polycondensation with a monomer containing pendant methylphenyl groups, bromomethylation, and followed by quaternization with 1-methylpyrrolidine (MPY), 1-methylpiperidine (MPRD), 1-methylimidazole (MIDZ) and N-methyl morpholine (MMPH), respectively. The properties of these membranes were then compared with the properties of conventional quarternized poly(ether ether ketone)s containing benzyltrimethylammonium (QPEEK-TMA). Model compounds, QMPY, QMPRD, QMIDZ and QMMPH, were synthesized and used to quantitatively compare the alkaline stability of hetero-cycloaliphatic quaternary ammonium groups using 1H NMR. The results of this study indicated that the alkaline stability of all these model compounds is in the order of QMPY > QMPRD > QTMA > QMIDZ > QMMPH. These QPEEKs membranes display superior thermal, dimensional and mechanical stability. QPEEK-TMA, QPEEK-MPY and QPEEK-MPRD exhibit higher hydroxide conductivities and lower activation energies than QPEEK-MIDZ and QPEEK-MMPH. Furthermore, after exposure to 1 M NaOH at 60 °C for 24 days, QPEEK-MPY and QPEEK-MPRD demonstrated a loss in hydroxide conductivity of 28.5% and 33.4%, respectively. Both values were lower than that of QPEEK-TMA (37.7%). Therefore, among these side-chain-type QPEEKs membranes, QPEEK-MPY and QPEEK-MPRD, containing benzylmethylpyrrolidinium and benzylmethylpiperidinium as cation head-groups, are promising AEM materials for fuel cell construction.
