High response acetone sensor with ppb detection based on Pd-Pt/ZnO nanoflowers in-situ grown on planar substrates

Yanhu Li,Mei Chen,Linghong Xue,Xu Li,Qingji Wang

Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensor, one of the most widely used gas sensors, faces significant challenges in achieving lower detection limit. Addressing this issue, the utilization and strategic design of bimetallic catalysts present a promising avenue. In this paper, Pd-Pt was in-situ grown on ZnO nanoflowers directly prepared on planar substrate and a sensor for detecting acetone was developed. The test results reveal that the Pd-Pt/ZnO nanoflowers sensor exhibits a remarkable 107.6 response to 100 ppm acetone at 350 °C, while presenting a rapid response (15s). Moreover, this sensor demonstrates excellent capability in detecting acetone at concentrations as low as 1 ppb, showcasing impressive gas-sensing performance. The response of the sensor to 100 ppm acetone is twice that of ethanol at the same concentration. The exceptional performance of the sensor results from its distinctive nanoflower structure and the catalytic effect of the Pd-Pt, which offers an extensive surface area and enhances the rate of redox reaction for gas molecules. This in-situ grown method has great potential for improving the gas-sensing performance in gas sensor.

Peroxidase-Like Platinum Clusters Synthesized by Ganoderma lucidum Polysaccharide for Sensitively Colorimetric Detection of Dopamine

Xiang Lai,Yu Han,Jie Zhang,Jinyu Zhang,Weifeng Lin,Zhiwei Liu,Longgang Wang

The sensitive and selective detection of dopamine (DA) is very important for the early diagnosis of DA-related diseases. In this study, we reported the colorimetric detection of DA usingGanoderma lucidumpolysaccharide (GLP) stabilized platinum nanoclusters (Ptn-GLP NCs). When Pt600-GLP NCs was added, 3,3’,5,5’-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) was rapidly catalyzed and oxidized to blue oxTMB, indicating the peroxidase-like activity of Pt600-GLP NCs. The catalytic reaction on the substrate TMB followed the Michaelis-Menton kinetics with the ping-pong mechanism. The mechanism of the colorimetric reaction was mainly due to the formation of hydroxyl radical (•OH). Furthermore, the catalytic reaction of Pt600-GLP NCs was used in the colorimetric detection of DA. The linear range for DA was 1–100 μM and the detection limit was 0.66 μM. The sensitive detection of DA using Pt-GLP NCs with peroxidase-like activity offers a simple and practical method that may have great potential applications in the biotechnology field. Keywords:dopamine;detection;platinum;colorimetric;Ganoderma lucidumpolysaccharide

Powerful synergy: efficient Pt–Au–Si nanocomposites as state-of-the-art catalysts for electrochemical hydrogen evolution

Binbin Jiang,Zeyuan Tang,Fan Liao,Haiping Lin,Shunkai Lu,Youyong Li,Mingwang Shao

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a fundamental electrochemical reaction to produce hydrogen gas from the electrolysis of water, and has been regarded as an attractive solution to many energy challenges. In the past few decades, platinum has been widely demonstrated to split water into hydrogen gas at high reaction rates and low overpotentials. Nevertheless, decreasing the loading of Pt in the designed electrocatalysts is very significant. However, with low Pt loading, it is challenging to maintain excellent catalytic performance. Here we report a Pt–Au–Si ternary nanocomposite as a highly active catalyst for the HER. The optimal composition of Pt–Au–Si was determined to be 7.2 : 31.3 : 61.5 (Pt : Au : Si, mass ratio) with a Tafel slope of only 24 mV dec−1. To be specific, the mass activity of the Pt–Au–SiNW-2 catalyst was 6.5 fold that of a 40 wt% Pt/C catalyst at an overpotential of 60 mV. More importantly, the cathodic current density even surpassed 40 wt% Pt/C when the overpotential was larger than 0.17 V (the corresponding current density was 108 mA cm−2). The outstanding catalytic performance might be derived from the synergy of the respective properties of the three components: the fast hydrogen adsorption rate on Pt, the quick migration of the adsorbed hydrogen atoms on Au and the rapid hydrogen evolution rate on Si. This research opens up a novel strategy to prepare highly efficient catalysts for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reactions.

Preparation of a Pt-Ni2P/NF catalyst for highly efficient hydrogen evolution using a magnetic field to promote Ni-Pt galvanic replacement

Zhong Wang,Shuang Yuan,Tuo Zang,Tengxiao Li,Yudi Zhou,Jiaqi Liu,Tie Liu,Kai Wang,Qiang Wang

The noble metal Pt is an ideal catalyst for promoting the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) during the electrolysis of water. However, Pt is also expensive and suffers from low utilization rates. In this work, a Pt-Ni 2 P/NF nanorod catalyst with a low Pt loading was synthesized under different magnetic fields, and it was found that the application of a magnetic field can increase the rate of the galvanic replacement reaction. When the magnetic field strength increases from 0 to 600 mT, the chemical reaction rate increases gradually, and the utilization rate of Pt increased by 2.3 times under 600 mT. The mechanism of the magnetic field-induced magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effect on the galvanic replacement reaction was revealed. In a 1 M KOH solution and at a current density of 10 mA cm –2 , the overpotential of Pt-Ni 2 P/NF prepared by applying a 600 mT magnetic field was as low as 15 mV and the Tafel slope was 37 mV dec –1 , compared with values of 82 mV and 70 mV dec –1 for a specimen prepared without a magnetic field. Additionally, at an overpotential of 90 mV, the mass-based Pt activity of the former material was 12 times greater while its turnover frequency was 19 times greater. This work provides theoretical and technical knowledge expected to assist in the controllable preparation of materials in magnetic fields and the efficient utilization of metallic resources.

Relationship between oxide identity and electrocatalytic activity of platinum for ethanol electrooxidation in perchlorate acidic solution

You Xinyu,Han Jiaxing,Del Colle Vinicius,Xu Yuqiang,Chang Yannan,Sun Xiao,Wang Guichang,Ji Chen,Pan Changwei,Zhang Jiujun,Gao Qingyu

Water and its dissociated species at the solid‒liquid interface play critical roles in catalytic science; e.g., functions of oxygen species from water dissociation are gradually being recognized. Herein, the relationship between oxide identity (PtOH ads , PtO ads , and PtO 2 ) and electrocatalytic activity of platinum for ethanol electrooxidation was obtained in perchlorate acidic solution over a wide potential range with an upper potential of 1.5 V (reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE). PtOH ads and α-PtO 2 , rather than PtO ads , act as catalytic centers promoting ethanol electrooxidation. This relationship was corroborated on Pt(111), Pt(110), and Pt(100) electrodes, respectively. A reaction mechanism of ethanol electrooxidation was developed with DFT calculations, in which platinum oxides-mediated dehydrogenation and hydrated reaction intermediate, geminal diol, can perfectly explain experimental results, including pH dependence of product selectivity and more active α-PtO 2 than PtOH ads . This work can be generalized to the oxidation of other substances on other metal/alloy electrodes in energy conversion and electrochemical syntheses.

Insights into the effects of Mn and Ni on Pt-modified sulfated CeO2 catalysts for NO removal

Hao Fan,Qin Peng,Zhenxing Shen,Xuefeng He,Yiming Yang

Nitric oxide (NO), a major atmospheric pollutant and a precursor to haze, can be removed using the denitration catalyst. Mn and Ni are commonly used as denitration catalyst additives owing to their adsorption abilities for NO and ammonia (NH3). In this study, we synthesized Mn- and Ni-loaded Pt-modified sulfated cerium oxide (PtSCe) catalysts using an impregnation method and explored the effects of these elements. The results revealed that the two elements had contrasting effects on the denitration activity of the catalysts. Mn improved the water vapor and sulfur resistance of the PtSCe sample by increasing the concentration of weak acid sites, enhancing the redox ability, and increasing the content of surface-adsorbed oxygen. The elevation in oxygen vacancies, stimulated by the presence of Ce3+ and Mn3+, swiftly replenished the reactive oxygen species, thereby sustaining the high denitration efficiency of the MnPt/SCe sample. Active sites on the catalyst surface included NH3 adsorbed on Lewis acid sites, NH4+, and –NH2, along with bridging, monodentate, and bidentate nitrate groups. Regarding the catalyst reaction mechanism, we determined that the selective catalyst reduction of NH3-SCR over MnPt/SCe followed both the Eley–Rideal and Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanisms. These findings offer crucial insights into the intricate relationship between metals, sulfates, and carrier molecules, thus providing implications for future catalyst design.

Functionalized Graphene Oxide as Drug Delivery Systems for Platinum Anticancer Drugs

Liying Wei,Guo Li,Taicheng Lu,Yiming Wei,Zhenzhen Nong,Mei Wei,Xin Pan,Qixiao Qin,Fayan Meng,Xuehua Li

Graphene Oxide , prepared by the modified Hummer's method, was modified with a series of high polymers (polyethyleneimine, polyethylene glycol , chitosan) and Folic Acid for the delivery of platinum anticancer drugs including Cisplatin , Carboplatin , Oxaliplatin and Eptaplatin . Nanocarriers were successfully prepared and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. Measurement of drug loading efficiency showed that these nanocarriers had the ability for effective delivery of the platinum anticancer drugs. The Maximum loading ratios of Cisplatin, Carboplatin, Oxaliplatin and Eptaplatin were 25.72, 161.08, 345.21 and 67.80 μg/mg. Drug release experiments in the acid environment showed that the cumulative release rate of platinum anticancer drugs from nanocarriers was higher than that in the neutral environment. The cumulative release of all three nanocarriers in the acid environment reached above 60%. In vitro cytotoxicity assay showed that those nanocarriers had a low toxicity. The cell viability rates were above 80% for all three nanocarriers. Investigation of the anticancer activity in vitro showed that those drug delivery systems had the ability to inhibit the growth of the SKOV3 cell line. These results showed that those nanocarriers were suitable for the delivery of platinum anticancer drugs. Providing preliminary advice on the potential application of the combination of platinum anticancer drugs and the functionalized Graphene Oxide nanocarriers.

Free-standing and ionomer-free 3D platinum nanotrough fiber network electrode for proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Manman Qi,Yachao Zeng,Ming Hou,Yong Gou,Wei Song,Haiping Chen,Gang Wu,Zhenghao Jia,Yanyan Gao,Hongjie Zhang,Zhigang Shao

Herein, a nanotrough-like catalyst layer (NTCL) with low Pt loading and enhanced durability was developed directly as the cathode for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Benefiting from the biomimetic architecture and ultrathin thickness, the mass transport of reactants and water management in the cathode are significantly enhanced. A peak power density of 0.936 W cm −2 is achieved with a Pt loading of 42 μg cm −2 in the cathode. Besides, the in-situ observation of water formation on the NTCL by the environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) verified the efficient water management. Importantly, the Pt NTCL cathode is far more stable than the conventional electrode during the accelerated stress tests. The enhanced durability may be attributed to a self-healing mechanism, which involves Pt dissolution and re-deposition, endowing the NTCL with outstanding robustness. This work highlights a new approach to preparing and understanding nanostructured Pt electrodes with enhanced performance and durability for PEMFCs.

Blocking copper transporter protein-dependent drug efflux with albumin-encapsulated Pt(IV) for synergistically enhanced chemo-immunotherapy

Fang Man,Cao Lei,Zhang Zhao,Yu Zhen,Shen Yue,Chen Jieqi,Chen Juan,Li Yue-Qin,Liu Zhaoqian,Meng Yingcai,Xiao Haihua,Qu Qiang,Yin Ji-Ye,Li Xiang-Ping

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) represents the most prevalent form of lung cancer, exerting a substantial impact on global health. Cisplatin-based chemotherapy is the standard treatment for NSCLC, but resistance and severe side effects present significant clinical challenges. Recently, novel tetravalent platinum compounds have attracted significant interest. While numerous studies concentrate on their functional modifications and targeted delivery, tumor-induced platinum resistance is frequently overlooked. Previous tetravalent platinum compound demonstrated antitumor activity, yet proved ineffective against cells exhibiting resistance to cisplatin. In order to enhance the efficacy and potential applications of tetravalent platinum in NSCLC, a glutathione (GSH)-responsive albumin nanoquadrivalent platinum (HSA@Pt) have been constructed. In light of previous research into drug conjugation, this study was to develop a combined chemo-immunotherapy approach. The HSA@Pt demonstrated high efficacy and low toxicity, with targeted tumor accumulation. Furthermore, Ammonium Tetrathiomolybdate (TM) has been demonstrated to exert a synergistic inhibitory effect on ATPase Copper Transporting Beta (ATP7B) and Programmed Death Ligand 1 (PD-L1), impede platinum efflux, induce cellular stress, and activate antitumor immunity. The findings suggest HSA@Pt’s potential for clinical use and a novel chemo-immunotherapy strategy for NSCLC, enhancing the utility of established drugs through synergistic sensitization.

Ultrathin Co3O4–Pt core-shell nanoparticles coupled with three-dimensional graphene for oxygen reduction reaction

Shuqi Hu,Yuying Liu,Shuangbao Wang,Xinyi Zhang,Pei Kang Shen

Design and synthesis of platinum catalysts within atomic level are of great significance for the practical application of fuel cells. We found that the ultrathin Co(OH) 2 nanoparticles can be converted into Co 3 O 4 –Co core-shell nanostructures through a thermal annealing process in reducing atmosphere, which are uniformly distributed on the surface of 3D graphene (3DG). The Co 3 O 4 –Co core-shell nanoparticles have been successfully transformed into Co 3 O 4 –Pt core-shell nanoparticles via a controlled replacement reaction. The Co 3 O 4 –Pt @3DG contains only a few atomic layers of Pt shell, and presents a high Pt utilization nanostructure. Besides, the 3D graphene serves as a catalysts carrier with open structure, and offers a three-dimensional molecular accessibility and conducive to mass transfer. Significantly, the optimized mass activity and specific activity of 1.018 A/mg Pt and 2.17 mA/cm 2 have been achieved on Co 3 O 4 –Pt @3DG at 0.9 V vs RHE , which are 7.6- and 8.1- times higher than those of Pt/C (0.134 A/mg Pt and 0.266 mA/cm 2 ), respectively. The high activity is mainly attributed to the ultrathin core-shell structure with an ultrahigh Pt utilization, and the interaction between the near-surface Co 3 O 4 and the surface Pt shell with a tensile strain to surface Pt shell, and the electrons transfer from Co to Pt.

Magnetic Field-Assisted Anchoring of High-Density Pt Single Atoms on MXene for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Zhong Wang,Tuo Zang,Ye Ziyu,Siyuan Zhang,Guojian Li,Xiaoming Liu,Qiang Wang,Shuang Yuan

Precise anchoring and high-density utilization of platinum single atoms (Pt SA ) remain critical challenges in advancing efficient hydrogen production via water electrolysis. Here, we present an innovative magnetic-field-assisted electrodeposition strategy for the controllable synthesis of high-density Pt SA on two-dimensional MXene substrates. Application of a 0.6 T magnetic field significantly enhanced Pt SA deposition kinetics, yielding a 2.1-fold increase in the deposition rate. Numerical simulations confirmed that magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effects induced by the magnetic field were the primary mechanism driving this enhanced deposition efficiency. The optimized Pt SA -0.6@MXene/NF catalyst exhibited outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance in 1 M KOH, achieving an ultralow overpotential of 12 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , along with a Tafel slope of 29 mV dec −1 . Notably, the catalyst demonstrated 66.1-fold higher Pt mass activity (3458.7 A g −1 ) compared to commercial Pt/C (52.3 A g −1 ) at a 50 mV overpotential. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the high-density Pt SA configuration synergistically enhances MXene's electrical conductivity while lowering the d-band center, thereby optimizing the energy barrier for hydrogen intermediate (H*) adsorption. This work provides a novel strategy for regulating the magnetic-field-assisted deposition of Pt SA catalysts, offering a new avenue for designing high-performance water electrolysis catalysts.

Controllable fabrication of Pt nanocatalyst supported on N-doped carbon containing nickel nanoparticles for ethanol oxidation

Jianguo Yu,Tangming Dai,Yuechao Cao,Yuning Qu,Yao Li,Juan Li,Yongnan Zhao,Haiyan Gao

In this paper, platinum nanoparticles were deposited on a carbon carrier with the partly graphitized carbon and the highly dispersive carbon-coated nickel particles. An efficient electron transfer structure can be fabricated by controlling the contents of the deposited platinum. The high resolution transmission electron microscopy images of Pt 2 /Ni@C N-doped sample prove the electron transfer channel from Pt (1 1 1) crystal planes to graphite (1 0 0) or Ni (1 1 1) crystal planes due to these linked together crystal planes. The Pt 3 /Ni@C N-doped with low Pt contents cannot form the electron transfer structure and the Pt 1 /Ni@C N-doped with high Pt contents show an obvious aggregation of Pt nanoparticles . The electrochemical tests of all the catalysts show that the Pt 2 /Ni@C N-doped sample presents the highest catalytic activity, the strongest CO tolerance and the best catalytic stability. The high performance is attributed to the efficient electronic transport structure of the Pt 2 /Ni@C N-doped sample and the synergistic effect between Pt and Ni nanoparticles. This paper provides a promising method for enhancing the conductivity of electrode material .
