The performance of the integrated process of coagulation and ozonation with ceramic membrane filtration was evaluated for the treatment of shale gas hydraulic fracturing flowback wastewater (HFFW). The removal efficiencies of carbon oxygen demand (COD Cr ), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), petroleum oils, and turbidity in effluent by the combined process were 87.1%, 72.2%, 94.3%, and 99.6%, respectively. Compared with sole membrane filtration, the transmembrane pressure (TMP) of ceramic membrane filtration was reduced by >99% with the integrated process. The coagulation and ozonation can effectively remove the organics with high molecular weights in the cake layer of ceramic membrane. To the best of our knowledge, this work proposed the combined process of coagulation, ozonation, and flat-sheet ceramic membrane filtration for the treatment of HFFW for the first time. The water quality of the effluent met the discharge standard (Comprehensive Wastewater Discharge Standard GB8978-1996). The findings can provide an important technical foundation for the innovation of integrated equipment for HFFW treatment. Practitioner points An integrated process combining coagulation and ozonation with flat-sheet ceramic membrane ultrafiltration for the treatment of shale gas wastewater. The water quality of this integrated process met the discharge standard. Coagulation and ozonation effectively alleviated the membrane fouling related to organics with high molecular weights. A new avenue for on-site treatment of shale gas wastewater and an alternative of the current centralized wastewater management.

In this study, a novel composite functioned as adsorption-photocatalysis based on bismuth oxide (Bi 2 O 3 ), reduced graphene oxide and titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) (labelled as BRGT) was applied in combination with ceramic membrane ultrafiltration to removal natural organic matter (NOM) and to mitigate membrane fouling. The mechanisms of NOM removal and of membrane fouling were investigated. The dual action of adsorption and photocatalysis by the BRGT effectively degraded NOM, giving a removal efficiency of 22.2 % for dissolved organic carbon and 73.0 % for UV absorbance at 254 nm. · O 2 − radicals were mainly involved in the degradation of humic and protein/polyphenol-containing fluorescent components of NOM. BGRT had a high adsorption affinity for protein-like components, whose removal depended more on h + . The fouling behavior of the ceramic membrane was the result of pore blocking combined with cake filtration formation. BRGT mainly adsorbed hydrophobic components, which exacerbated the reversible fouling resistance and transformed the fouling mechanism from standard blocking into complete blocking. With increase of photocatalytic time, the hydrophobic fraction was converted into hydrophilic and transphilic fractions, and large and medium molecular weight organics were degraded into small molecules. In this case, the cake filtration formation occurred much earlier, with reversible membrane resistance reduced by 95.5 % and irreversible membrane resistance reduced by 90.4 % at 60 min. From the results we concluded that NOM can be effectively treated with adsorption-photocatalysis by BRGT, especially its fluorescent fractions, which has great potential in alleviating ceramic ultrafiltration membrane fouling.

In this paper, Al 2 O 3 ceramic membrane is modified to hydrophobicity by grafting 1 H,1 H,2 H,2 H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane. And its properties are characterized in detail. CO 2 capture performance of ceramic membrane is investigated by experiments. Results show that wetting resistance after modification is significantly improved, and contact angle increases from the initial 49.8–130.9°. However, hydrophobic modification has no significant effect on the crystalline phase, surface morphology and pore size distribution of the ceramic membrane. With ethanolamine (MEA) as absorbent, CO 2 mass transfer rate and capture efficiency using modified hydrophobic ceramic membrane are 46.6 × 10 −3 mol/(m 2 ·s) and 98.0%, showing significantly increase compared to the original membrane. After 72 h immersion in MEA solution, quality of ceramic membrane does not change significantly. And there is almost no change in average pore size. We believe this study will provide a reference for the industrial application for CO 2 capture by gas-liquid membrane contactor with ceramic membrane.

Excessive CO 2 emissions contribute to global warming, which may cause potential threat to survival of humans and other creatures, and it is necessary to take effective measures to curb CO 2 emissions. Gas-liquid membrane contact CO 2 separation technology is an emerging CO 2 capture technology that combines advantages of membrane separation and chemical absorption . In this paper, differences of CO 2 capture performance between ceramic and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes with pore size of 10 nm and 100 nm are investigated comprehensively. The morphological structure, pore size distribution, wettability and membrane flux of ceramic and PTFE membranes are analyzed by membrane characterization. Moreover, with monoethanolamine (MEA) as absorbent, CO 2 capture performance under different operating parameters (e.g., absorber flow rate and temperature, gas flow rate and pressure) is investigated through experiments based on ceramic and PTFE membrane modules . The CO 2 capture efficiency of ceramic and PTFE membrane is 94.7% and 99.3%, respectively. However, the mass transfer rate of ceramic membrane is much higher than that of PTFE membrane. The results show that ceramic membrane exhibits favorable CO 2 capture performance under appropriate operation parameters. This paper will provide theoretical and technical references for subsequent industrial CO 2 capture applications.

In this work, TiO 2 nanocones grown on SiC membrane was used as the support of V 2 O 5 -WO 3 species to prepare V 2 O 5 -WO 3 /TiO 2 @SiC (VWTi(C-X)@SiC) catalytic membrane for dust filtration and NH 3 -SCR denitration. On account of the large specific surface area, abundant surface acid sites and prominent redox property, the optimized VWTi(C-550)@SiC catalytic membrane shows >90% NO removal efficiency at the temperature of 280–360 °C, which are much higher than VWTi(P-550)/SiC catalytic membrane (TiO 2 nanoparticles prepared by traditional vacuum coating titanium sol method was used as the support of V 2 O 5 -WO 3 species, NO conversion <80% at whole tested temperature). Additionally, VWTi(C-550)@SiC displays superior stability during the SO 2 + H 2 O resistance and 300 h long-term test at 300 °C, and exhibits an excellent dust filtration performance (2.5 μm SiO 2 particles interception rate exceeded 99.99%) under all test conditions. More importantly, the structure of nanocones decrease the influence of tensile stresses due to the different thermal expansion coefficients of TiO 2 and SiC membranes, which significantly suppress the fall of VWTi catalyst layer from the surface of SiC during pulse-jet cleaning. Among above results, it can be concluded that the optimized VWTi(C-550)@SiC catalytic membrane shows a prosperous application prospect for the simultaneously dust filtration and NH 3 -SCR denitration of medium–high temperature flue gas .

Silicon carbide ceramic membranes have been widely used in the treatment of various corrosive and high temperature wastewaters. However, SiC is a compound with strong covalent bond , thus the sintering temperature and then the energy consumption during sintering of SiC ceramics is high, which inhibits the scale-up manufacturing of SiC ceramic membranes . Here, a silicon carbide ceramic membrane support was prepared at 800 °C with a low melting-point glaze as the sintering aid. The glaze infiltrated the SiC skeleton during sintering, and gave rise to high fracture strength of the porous ceramics . With the content increase of sintering aid from 10 wt% to 30 wt%, the pore-formation mechanism of the ceramic membrane support transformed from SiC particles packing to SiC aggregations packing, leading to the increase in pore size and decrease in porosity. The permeance and selectivity of the support was investigated via pure-water and oil-in-water emulsion tests. Due to the high hydrophilicity, the pure-water flux increased from 32 L/(m 2 ·h) to 87 L/(m 2 ·h) while the oil rejection decreased from 99.0% to 93.1% with the increase of trans -membrane pressure. This work provides a feasible route for the preparation of SiC porous ceramics with low energy consumption.

Application of ceramic membrane (CM) with outstanding characteristics, such as high flux and chemical-resistance, is inevitably restricted by membrane fouling. Coagulation was an economical and effective technology for membrane fouling control. This study investigated the filtration performance of ceramic membrane enhanced by the emerging titanium-based coagulant (polytitanium chloride, PTC). Particular attention was paid to the simulation of ceramic membrane fouling using four widely used mathematical models. Results show that filtration of the PTC-coagulated effluent using flat-sheet ceramic membrane achieved the removal of organic matter up to 78.0%. Permeate flux of ceramic membrane filtration reached 600 L/(m 2 · h), which was 10-fold higher than that observed with conventional polyaluminum chloride (PAC) case. For PTC, fouling of the ceramic membrane was attributed to the formation of cake layer, whereas for PAC, standard filtration/intermediate filtration (blocking of membrane pores) was also a key fouling mechanism. To sum up, cross-flow filtration with flat-sheet ceramic membranes could be significantly enhanced by titanium-based coagulation to produce both high-quality filtrate and high-permeation flux.

Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic membrane supports, as critical components of ceramic membrane filters, must exhibit outstanding performance in mechanical properties, porosity, and chemical stability. In this study, MoO₃ was employed as a sintering aid, with SiC and α-Al₂O₃ serving as raw materials and walnut shell powder as a pore-forming agent. The effects of varying sintering temperatures (1250–1400°C) and MoO₃ contents on the properties of SiC porous ceramic membrane supports were systematically investigated. Special emphasis was placed on elucidating the mechanisms by which MoO₃ addition influences porosity, flexural strength, pore size distribution, and chemical stability. Experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of MoO₃ facilitates low-temperature sintering of SiC supports through a dissolution-precipitation mechanism. This process promotes the formation of mullite whiskers that reinforce interparticle necking regions while enhancing the uniformity of neck connections. Optimal performance was achieved at 1350°C with 8 wt% MoO₃ addition, yielding a bending strength of 37.01 ± 1.72 MPa, average pore size of 1.735 μm, most probable pore size of 1.7 μm, open porosity of 39.12 %, and exceptional corrosion resistance. This work establishes both theoretical foundations and practical strategies for low-temperature fabrication of high-performance SiC porous ceramics, while expanding the application potential of molybdenum-based sintering aids in structure-function integrated ceramic materials.

Manganese is widely distributed in the natural environment, and its presence in drinking water poses a risk to human health. In this study, an integrated pre-deposited powdered activated carbon (PAC) and manganese oxide (MnO x ) bio-functional layer of inorganic origin was coupled with gravity-driven ceramic membrane (GDCM) reactor. The study aims to investigate the effects of the membrane pore size and functional layer integrity on the Mn 2+ removal and flux. The results reveal that the average Mn 2+ removal efficiency of the large pore size membranes (300 kDa and 0.45 μm) was lower (75 % – 78 %) compared to those with smaller pores (15 kDa and 50 kDa) (87 % – 88 %) during long-term operation. Such differences are attributed to a period of manganese leakage before the PAC-MnO x matured in large-pore membrane units and a longer residence time in small-pore membranes. The functional layer leaded to reversible fouling, which was more prominent in membranes with larger pores (contributing to 93 % of total resistance) than those with smaller ones (ranging from 51.7 % to 61.9 %). Although the damaged functional layer resulted in occasional high Mn 2+ concentrations in the effluent, it did not significantly impact long-term flux development. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), in conjunction with COMSOL analysis, non-destructively evaluate biofilm formation process and indicate a homogeneous flow field and mass transfer in the “dual layers” (active film layer and ceramic membrane layer) of the GDCM. The presence of manganese-oxidizing bacteria ( Hyphomicrobium, Reyranella, and Pseudomonas ) in the GDCM reactor was verified using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and high-throughput sequencing. Additional material characterization revealed that a portion of the PAC-MnO x exhibited characteristics of birnessite, with autocatalytic oxidation of Mn 2+ , and that Mn (III) and Mn (IV) were the primary species in MnO x , which exhibited excellent catalytic oxidation and adsorption capabilities for Mn (II), respectively. Overall, the developed PAC-MnO x GDCM system shows great promise in efficiently removing manganese and producing water of desired quality, thereby holding potential in applications across several sectors of advanced water treatment processes.

High-purity SiC ceramic membrane has gained tremendous attention in the treatment of various corrosive wastewaters. Additive manufacturing technique makes it possible to fabricate high-purity SiC ceramic membrane with complex configurations. Here, we proposed a route for the preparation of high-purity SiC ceramic membrane support using digital light processing and SiC whisker reinforcement. With the increase of whisker content, the viscosity of SiC w /SiC photosensitive slurry increased due to the formation of whiskers agglomerations; the average pore size shifted from 3.15 μm to 1.35 μm with the occupation of large pores by SiC whiskers. In addition, the compressive strength of the ceramic support increased from 10.7 MPa to 16.7 MPa because of the decline in pore size and the toughening effects by SiC whiskers. So, the introduced SiC whiskers enhanced the pore connectivity and mechanical strength of the porous ceramics. This work provides a feasible path to manufacture high-purity SiC ceramic membrane support with complex configuration, high pore-connectivity and excellent mechanical properties.

Membrane technology has emerged as an effective solution for the purification of oily wastewater, particularly in the separation of oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. However, challenges, such as membrane fouling and the development of robust ceramic membranes with superior stability, continue to limit their widespread application. In this work, helical carbon nanotubes (HCNTs) with interlocking structures were grown in ceramic support channels through the airflow-induced chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method to fabricate membrane material with high hydrophilicity and underwater oleophobicity. The influence of CVD parameters on the growth of HCNTs and the membrane separation performance for O/W emulsions were studied systematically. The optimal HCNTs-SiC composite membrane was prepared at 600 °C, featuring a pore size of 0.95 μm and flux of 229.29 L·m −2 ·h −1 . This membrane demonstrated exceptional purification efficiency (99.99%) for a 500 ppm O/W emulsion, along with a stable flux of 32.48 L·m −2 ·h −1 under a transmembrane pressure (TMP) of 1.5 bar. Furthermore, the unique membrane structure and surface heterogeneity contributed to its long service life and excellent recovery capability. This work provides a novel strategy for designing high-performance ceramic membranes for oil–water separation, offering potential solutions to current limitations in membrane technology.

Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic membranes fabricated by recrystallization sintering can be used in some harsh environments because of their remarkable chemical and thermal stabilities. However, the commercial membranes can only meet the demands of microfiltration applications because of the challenge in pore-size control during recrystallization sintering. Here, a SiC ultrafiltration membrane with triple-layer asymmetric structures was prepared with micro-scale SiC particles for the substrate and nano-scale SiC particles for the selective layer. Defects-free selective layers were successfully coated on the high-purity SiC substrate by spin coating. The average pore size of the membrane was 60 nm when sintered at 1300 ℃. The surface roughness of the membrane increased with the increase in sintering temperature, leading to the improvement in hydrophilicity. Oil-in-water emulsion filtration analysis found that the oil rejection of the membrane exceeded 99.9 %. Thus, this SiC UF membrane provides new possibility to treat the corrosive and oily wastewaters.
