In this article, two novel complexes with 5-[[4-(2H-Tetrazol-5-yl)phenyl]methoxy]-1,3-benzenedicarboxylic (HL) as ligand were synthesized under solvothermal conditions: [Co2L(H2O)2]∙2H2O (1), [Zn2L(H2O)2]∙2H2O (2). However, these two complexes are very unstable because they tend to lose their water molecules under room temperature. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis under low temperature show that these two complexes are isomorphic and the Schleffli symbol of the topological structure is {322.416.57}{341.468.511}. Interestingly, two unique Co atoms link with one water molecules to form a binuclear cluster, then the cluster further coordinates with the organic ligand and water molecules to infinitely extend to be one-dimensional chain, and the chains are connected with four nitrogen atoms of the ligands to form a two-dimensional layer structure, which are further connected to generate the final three-dimensional framework.

The green synthesis of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), famous as a bio-based polymer monomer from the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), offers a promising route to reduce the usage of petroleum-based polymer polyethylene terephthalate. Although the electrocatalytic preparation of FDCA rids high temperature and pressure limits, most electrocatalysts used in the HMF oxidation reaction (HMFOR) are usually fabricated in harsh conditions. Therefore, we propose a method to improve the performance of electrocatalysts in the HMFOR reaction by introducing metal salts using natural seawater as the main feedstock. The final Co-sw/NF realized a 97.4% FDCA yield and 97.3% Faraday efficiency (FE). In-situ Raman techniques identified the catalytically active species of the catalysts employed in the HMFOR process. The effect of metal salts on catalyst energy levels is discussed in detail using the ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and Tauc plot method. The adsorption performance of HMF on the catalyst was determined by calculating the d-band centers and applying open circuit potential (OCP) tests. Furthermore, we elucidate the specific mechanism in terms of electron transport pathways.

Developing cost-effective and inherently safe methods for accelerating the sustainable production of value-added chemicals from biomass presents a promising solution to the current energy crisis. This study introduces heterogeneous copper species anchored on a γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst (Cu/γ-Al 2 O 3 ) with high dispersibility and small Cu particle size, synthesized via a straightforward incipient-wetness impregnation method. This method facilitates the selective anaerobic dehydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) in the absence of any oxidant or hydrogen acceptor. An HMF conversion of 69.8 % and a DFF yield of 44.9 % were attained at 130 °C over a 12-h period. Extensive characterizations were conducted to elucidate the correlation between the catalyst’s structure and its dehydrogenation activity. The findings indicated that strong L-acid sites, elevated Cu dispersions, small Cu particle size and an increased number of Cu + active sites were conducive to enhanced dehydrogenation reactivity. The Cu/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst demonstrated superior catalytic efficiency and stability. A possible reaction mechanism is suggested, integrating DFT calculations with experimental observations. This research offers valuable insights into the selective conversion of HMF to DFF and encourages further exploration into the dehydrogenation of biomass alcohols into high-value chemicals under oxidant-free conditions.

A novel approach for the production of 2,5-hexanedione (HDN) and 3-methyl-2-cyclopenten-1-one (3-MCO) from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) by water splitting with Zn is reported for the first time. The use of high temperature water (HTW) conditions is the key for the efficient conversion of HMF to HDN and 3-MCO. Parameters regarding the Zn amount, temperature and reaction time are optimized and HDN and 3-MCO are produced in 27.3% and 30.5% yields, respectively. The roles of HTW and ZnO obtained by oxidation of Zn in water for the conversion of HMF, together with intermediate structures, are discussed to understand the mechanism of the reaction.

2,5-dimethyfuran (DMF), which is produced from 5-hydroxymethyfurfural (HMF) by hydrodeoxygenation (HDO), is a high quality fuel due to the high heating value, the high octane number and the suitable boiling point. Selective hydrogenation of HMF into liquid fuel DMF has been widely researched. In this paper, Co 3 O 4 catalyst was prepared by co-precipitation and was reduced at different temperatures to form Co–CoO x catalysts. The characterization of catalysts was tested by XRD , TEM, XPS , TPR, BET and NH 3 -TPD. Co–CoO x possessed a high amount of Co metal and CoO x acidic sites, wherein Co worked as the active hydrogenation sites and CoO x acted as the acid promoter to facilitate the selective HDO of HMF to DMF. The synergistic effect of Co–CoO x is the key for HDO of HMF, obtaining 83.3% of DMF yield at 170 °C, 12 h and the reduction temperature of 400 °C. This method not only saves the catalyst cost, but also promotes the utilization of biomass energy.

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a very important chemical intermediate, while it can be hydrogenated into various value-added chemicals. However, the hydrogenation of HMF over non-precious metal catalysts still remains as a challenging problem. In this study, lignosulfonate (LS) was used as carbon resource, and successfully introduced into MOFs structure. Then, a series of lignin-MOF derived catalysts (Ni n Co-MOF-LS) were prepared by the hydrothermal method with different ratios of Ni and Co metals. The selective conversion of hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 5-methylfurfuryl alcohol (MFA) was achieved over Ni n Co-MOF-LS catalyst in a N 2 atmosphere with isopropanol as solvent. The Ni/Co metal ratios and calcination temperature played a key role in the catalytic performance of the catalyst. The catalysts showed good catalytic performance in the selective hydrogenation of HMF to MFA through an in-depth study of various reaction parameters such as temperature, pressure, reaction time and catalyst dosage. The coordination of lignosulfonate and MOFs provide a novel alternative for the utilization of lignin resource and the upgrading of biomass-derived chemicals.

The selective hydrogenolysis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) platform molecule to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) has attracted increasing attention due to its broad range of applications. However, HMF, with multiple functional groups, produces various byproducts, hindering its use on an industrial scale. Herein, a bimetallic Pt-FeOx/AC catalyst with low Pt and FeOx loadings for selective HMF hydrogenolysis to DMF was prepared by incipient wetness impregnation. The structures and properties of different catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, TEM, ICP-OES and Py-FTIR techniques. The addition of FeOx enhanced Pt dispersion and the Lewis acidic site density of the catalysts, and was found to be able to inhibit C=C hydrogenation, thereby im-proving DMF yield. Moreover, the presence of Pt promoted the reduction of iron oxide, creating a strong interaction between Pt and FeOx. This synergistic effect originated from the activation of the C–O bond over FeOx species followed by hydrogenolysis over the adjacent Pt, and played a critical role in hydrogenolysis of HMF to DMF, achieving a yield of 91% under optimal reaction conditions. However, the leaching of Fe species caused a metal–acid imbalance, which led to an increase in ring hydrogenation products.Keywords:5-hydroxymethylfurfural;2,5-dimethylfuran;hydrogenolysis;Pt-FeOx/AC;synergistic effect

Electrochemical reactions are important method for reducing the carbon footprint of large-scale chemical processes. Highly selective conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran (DHMF) is achieved under mild conditions through electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) over AgCu nanoalloys supported by the pyrolyzed biomass alginic acid sodium (PA), with the advantage of utilizing the active hydrogen intermediates in the process. The Ag 1 Cu 1 /PA exhibits outstanding performance in ECH of HMF with a selectivity of 94% toward DHMF at a conversion of 93.2% and the Faraday efficiency (FE) of 61.8%, which are significantly superior to those over Ag/PA (selectivity of 53.89%, conversion of 90.6%, and FE 25.79%). The incorporation of Cu into Ag nanoparticles boosts the charge transferability and lowers the onset potential of ECH. Density functional theory calculations reveal that AgCu alloy provides more electron transfer to HMF and lowers the energy barrier for HMF hydrogenation.

5-Hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HFCA), a promising biomonomer from renewable resources, was used to synthesize two bio-based plasticizers, namely, hexyl 5-((hexanoyloxy)methyl)-2-furancarboxylate (HHMFC) and dihexyl 5,5′-(oxybis(methylene))bis(furan-2-carboxylate) (DHOBFC). The chemical structures of these prepared plasticizers were confirmed using Fourier transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance, and then, their plasticization effects on poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) were also studied. As a result, HFCA-based plasticizers were miscible with PVC and exhibited excellent plasticization performances, compared with commercial dioctyl phthalate. It was noted that HHMFC had a much better plasticizing effect on the PVC film than DHOBFC; however, it displayed a poorer volatility resistance and exudation resistance, which could be attributed to its smaller molecular weight. Besides, because each rigid furan ring of the synthesized plasticizers contained one oxygen atom, the polarity of HFCA-based plasticizers was improved, which inhibited them from migrating from the PVC matrix into nonpolar solvents. Therefore, the HFCA-based plasticizers have good potential as primary plasticizers for PVC.

Here, a series of nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) supported transition metal oxide catalysts were prepared by pyrolysis of chitosan-metal salt mixtures for the efficient synthesis 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and fructose. Among them, supported molybdenum-based species on nitrogen-doped carbon (Mo/NC) exhibited excellent activity and selectivity for selective oxidation of HMF to DFF. The presence of nitrogen species reduces the electron cloud density around the Mo species, thereby improving the catalytic activity. Moreover, the interaction between active MoO2 species on the catalyst surface and NC ensured the stability of the catalyst, resulting in no significant loss of activity after four catalytic cycles. 99.5% and 55.1% yields of DFF with full conversion were obtained from HMF and fructose respectively over Mo/NC-chitosan-600 in DMSO under ambient air. In order to enhance DFF yield from fructose, sulfonate groups were introduced into Mo/NC-chitosan-600 catalyst, leading to the highest DFF yield of 70.2%. In addition, this catalyst also allowed 10.0%, 22.9% and 33.3% DFF yields from glucose, sucrose and inulin, respectively.

It is challenging to effectively convert 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), a flexible biobased building-block, over non-noble metal catalysts. In this contribution, Mn–Fe oxides were prepared and served as highly active catalysts for the selective oxidation of HMF to DFF. Among Mn–Fe oxides with varied Mn–Fe molar ratios, Mn6Fe1Ox showed the best catalytic activity and offered HMF conversion up to 97% with a DFF selectivity of 98% (110 °C, 5 h, and 1.5 MPa O2). It is revealed that the introduction of α-Fe2O3 resulted in significant enhancement in the amount of catalytic active sites (Mn4+–O2– pairs) and their activity in Mn6Fe1Ox for the dehydrogenation of HMF to DFF. Mn6Fe1Ox also was a robust catalyst that could be successively used at least six times without substantial loss in its catalytic activity. Furthermore, a facile two-step process for the conversion of fructose to DFF with a yield up to 80% was developed by the integration of dehydration and oxidation over Amberlyst-15 and Mn6Fe1Ox, respectively.

Catalytic in situ hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) has received a great interest in recent years. However, the issue of the consumption of expensive hydrogen donors, such as secondary alcohols, limits its applications. In this work, a ternary CuZnCoO x catalyst, exhibiting a 99% yield of DMF from in situ hydrogenation of 5-HMF with ethanol as economical hydrogen donor, is developed. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS-mapping), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and temperature programmed reduction (TPR) reveal the synergy effect of each components. Reaction mechanism studies unravel the CoO x results in promoting in situ H 2 production from ethanol, the zinc oxide accelerates the aldehyde group ( CHO) hydrogenation to hydroxymethyl group ( CH 2 OH) and the formation of Cu-Co alloy significantly facilitate the hydrogenation of 5-HMF. Additionally, this ternary CuZnCoO x catalyst exhibits superior recyclability without losing any activity during 6 cycles experiment.
