Developing advanced electrode materials is crucial for improving the electrochemical performances of proton batteries. Currently, the anodes are primarily crystalline materials which suffer from inferior cyclic stability and high electrode potential. Herein, we propose amorphous electrode materials for proton batteries by using a general ion-exchange protocol to introduce multivalent metal cations for activating the host material. Taking Al 3+ as an example, theoretical and experimental analysis demonstrates electrostatic interaction between metal cations and lattice oxygen, which is the primary barrier for direct introduction of the multivalent cations, is effectively weakened through ion exchange between Al 3+ and pre-intercalated K + . The as-prepared Al-MoO x anode therefore delivered a remarkable capacity and outstanding cycling stability that outperforms most of the state-of-the-art counterparts. The assembled full cell also achieved a high voltage of 1.37 V. This work opens up new opportunities for developing high-performance electrodes of proton batteries by introducing amorphous materials.

Orthocarboxylic acids─organic molecules carrying three hydroxyl groups at the same carbon atom─have been distinguished as vital reactive intermediates by the atmospheric science and physical (organic) chemistry communities as transients in the atmospheric aerosol cycle. Predicted short lifetimes and their tendency to dehydrate to a carboxylic acid, free orthocarboxylic acids, signify one of the most elusive classes of organic reactive intermediates, with even the simplest representative methanetriol (CH(OH)3)─historically known as orthoformic acid─not previously been detected experimentally. Here, we report the first synthesis of the previously elusive methanetriol molecule in low-temperature mixed methanol (CH3OH) and molecular oxygen (O2) ices subjected to energetic irradiation. Supported by electronic structure calculations, methanetriol was identified in the gas phase upon sublimation via isomer-selective photoionization reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry combined with isotopic substitution studies and the detection of photoionization fragments. The first synthesis and detection of methanetriol (CH(OH)3) reveals its gas-phase stability as supported by a significant barrier hindering unimolecular decomposition. These findings progress our fundamental understanding of the chemistry and chemical bonding of methanetriol, hydroxyperoxymethane (CH3OOOH), and hydroxyperoxymethanol (CH2(OH)OOH), which are all prototype molecules in the oxidation chemistry of the atmosphere.

Photovoltaic thin film solar cells based on kesterite Cu 2 ZnSn(S, Se) 4 (CZTSSe) have reached 13.8% sunlight-to-electricity conversion efficiency. However, this efficiency is still far from the Shockley-Queisser radiative limit and is hindered by the significant deficit in open circuit voltage ( V OC ). The presence of high-density interface states between the absorber layer and buffer or window layer leads to the recombination of photogenerated carriers, thereby reducing effective carrier collection. To tackle this issue, a new window structure ZnO/AgNW/ZnO/AgNW (ZAZA) comprising layers of ZnO and silver nanowires (AgNWs) is proposed. This structure offers a simple and low-damage processing method, resulting in improved optoelectronic properties and junction quality. The ZAZA-based devices exhibit enhanced V OC due to the higher built-in voltage ( V bi ) and reduced interface recombination compared to the usual indium tin oxide (ITO) based structures. Additionally, improved carrier collection is demonstrated as a result of the shortened collection paths and the more uniform carrier lifetime distribution. These advances enable the fabrication of the first ITO-free CZTSSe solar cells with over 10% efficiency without an anti-reflective coating.

Two novel uranyl coordination polymers, namely, UO2(bptc)(H2bpy)·(bpy) (1) and (UO2)3(bptc)1.5(phen)2(H2O)2·H2O (2) (H4bptc = 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid; bpy = 4,4′-bipyridine; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), have been obtained via a hydrothermal method based on a semi-rigid aromatic tetracarboxylic ligand and two different auxiliary or templating N-containing ligands. Complex 1 shows a one-dimensional (1D) structure derived from double chains with two types of rings arranged alternately, which further exhibits an intriguing 3D supramolecular network induced by diverse non-covalent interactions. Complex 2 displays a dislocated “double floor” of a 2D structure (2D zigzag layers), in which the carboxylate groups of the bptc4− ligand adopt a variety of fascinating bridging modes. In addition, quantum chemical calculations were used to investigate the coordination properties and bonding nature of the as-synthesized complexes, and the results indicate that in these two complexes the 5f, 6d, and 7p orbitals of uranium and 2p orbitals of O and N atoms mainly contribute to the covalency of the U–O and U–N bonds.

An ultra-sensitive photoelectrochemical sensing platform for profenofos detection based on the inhibition of catalase activity was prepared in this work. First, the novel functional nanocomposite material AgVO3/BiOI was prepared by a hot solvent method and successive ion layer adsorption reaction. Then, chitosan was employed as a dispersion medium to disperse and immobilize the catalase. Under visible light irradiation, the prepared CAT/CS/AgVO3/BiOI/ITO nanocomposite electrode generates a stable low photocurrent in hydrogen peroxide solution. When this electrode is immersed in a phosphate buffer solution containing profenofos, the activity of the catalase is inhibited, resulting in an increase in the photocurrent. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the profenofos concentration and increase in photocurrent are linearly related in the concentration range of 1 × 10−10 to 5.0 × 10−8 mol L−1, and the limit of detection is 1.0 × 10−11 mol L−1. This biosensor shows good selectivity for detecting profenofos in fruits and vegetables, and the determination results of profenofos are satisfactory.

The main challenge in the development of luminescent lanthanide complexes lies in the design of organic ligands. Herein, a carboxyl-terminated aromatic hyperbranched polyester (CHBPE) ligand was designed and synthesized, which has abundant branched end groups for chelating lanthanide ions, strong light-harvesting ability in the UV region, and more importantly, good energy match with the Tb3+ ion. The structure of CHBPE was characterized by MALDI-TOF MS, elemental analysis, FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and UV-Vis absorption measurements. Subsequently, a Tb3+ complex (CHBPE-Tb3+-Phen) based on CHBPE was obtained, in which Phen was used as a co-ligand to protect Tb3+ ions and reduce non-radiative transition of Tb3+ ions. The as-prepared complex was analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS, elemental analysis, 13C NMR, FTIR and UV-Vis methods. The results demonstrated that both CHBPE and Phen coordinated to Tb3+ ions and a stable chelate structure was formed. The synergistic effect of CHBPE and Phen made the complex exhibit remarkably strong green luminescence corresponding to the Tb3+ ion upon UV excitation. The efficiency of energy transfer (Φsen) from the CHBPE to Tb3+ ion was 55.2%, revealing that CHBPE is well suitable for the sensitization of Tb3+ ions. The absolute quantum efficiency (Φoverall) and luminescence lifetime (τobs) of the complex were 27.5% and 0.28 ms, respectively. The possible energy transfer pathways in the complex system were proposed. The complex is expected to have potential application in the near ultraviolet light emitting diode (NUV-LED).

Tuning and stabilizing the chemical microenvironment of Pt-based single-atom catalysts is a major challenge in promoting an electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we constructed a hierarchical stabilization system of Pt single-atoms via defect substitution using the polyoxometalate (POM) (NH4)4[ZnMo6O24H6] (ZnMo6) as a template. The well-defined structure of ZnMo6 led to precise local Zn sublimation during the formation of Mo2C, which was converted from the Mo6 ring in situ. The localized defect provides a well-defined Mo(C)–Pt–N coordination environment to trap Pt single-atoms. The obtained single-atom catalyst (PtSA@Mo2C@NC) exhibited a superior and stable electrochemical HER performance with an unprecedented mass activity of 75.21 A mgPt−1 in 0.5 M H2SO4. In-depth theoretical calculation analysis revealed that Mo(C)–Pt–N coordination provides a moderated charge state and low d-band center of the Pt site, thus significantly promoting proton adsorption and H2 desorption. This work demonstrates a promising single-atom stabilization strategy for constructing high-performance HER electrocatalysts through the precise modulation of a three-dimensional chemical environment.

Conventional photocatalytic coatings for nitric oxide (NO) abatement often suffer from the accumulation of toxic nitrogen dioxide (NO2) as an intermediate byproduct, undermining their environmental friendliness. To address this challenge, a layered composite coating was designed and fabricated by integrating the photocatalytic C3N4/Bi2WO6 heterojunction onto hollow glass microspheres, followed by fluorination and incorporation into a polymer matrix. This process engineered a robust and hydrophobic surface microenvironment, which remained conducive to the NO/O2 interfacial reaction even under adverse conditions. Consequently, the composite coating exhibits high selectivity in NO oxidation, achieving substantial removal rates (25.4–69.1%) while minimizing the NO2 conversion rate (2.6%) in a low-temperature and dry environment, as verified by in situ monitoring. Interface engineering enhances selectivity by optimizing the adsorption and activation of reactants. The synergy between the coating’s excellent durability, inherent antibacterial, and self-cleaning properties underpins its long-term functional stability. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidate the enhanced charge separation/transfer, which in turn promotes a reaction pathway conducive to the selective formation of nitrate. Consequently, this work establishes a practical strategy of microenvironment engineering via rational coating design, advancing photocatalytic technology toward sustainable air pollution control.

Rechargeable aluminum batteries suffer from dendritic anode growth and capacity decay due to severe concentration polarization caused by sluggish ion transport kinetics, particularly under high-capacity conditions. To address this issue, we developed an amorphous covalent organic framework (COF) coating layer engineered for anion-concentrating functionality. The conformational flexible imine linkages in the amorphous COF enable adaptive trapping of Al 2 Cl 7 − , storing them as crystalline AlCl 3 and ligand-bonded AlCl 4 − within the mesopores. This mechanism enriches electrochemical active species to buffer the concentration polarization, and promotes the formation of highly active Al 3 Cl 10 − species at the surface, thereby accelerating interfacial kinetics to guide homogeneous deposition. As a result, dendrite-free aluminum deposition is achieved even at an ultrahigh areal capacity of 10 mAh cm −2 under the protection of the COF. The half-cell with the COF exhibits an exceptional cycling time of over 6000 h with a coulombic efficiency of 99.9%, while symmetric cells demonstrate long-term stability over 7500 h with a low overpotential of 36 mV. Full cells with the graphite cathode also maintain stability over 5000 cycles under a large current density of 1.2 A g −1 . This work presents an effective coating strategy for regulating electrodeposition in metal anode batteries, highlighting a promising path toward practical applications.

Electrochemically anodized stainless steel (SS) shows promise as a free-standing electrode in flexible supercapacitors due to its low cost, eco-friendly nature, and binder-free characteristics. However, unsatisfactory cycling stability limits its practical use in wearable electronics. Herein, we introduce a conductive carbon film deposited on the surface of the anodized SS electrode as a protective layer via electron cyclotron resonance sputtering. By optimizing the deposition bias voltage and deposition time, the resulting flexible electrode exhibits a specific capacitance of 271.6 mF·cm-2 at a current density of 1 mA·cm-2, representing a 2.24-fold increase over the uncoated counterpart, with 88.7% capacitance retention after 8,000 cycles. The enhanced performance is closely related to the conductivity of the surface coating, which depends on the sp2/sp3 ratio (the relative proportion of graphitic to diamond-like carbon bonding). The carbon film-coated anodized SS electrode is combined with an activated carbon on carbon cloth electrode and a gel electrolyte to produce a flexible supercapacitor. The energy storage device exhibits a wide operating potential window of 1.8 V, a high energy density of 51.70 mWh·cm-3, and a power density of 0.50 W·cm-3, accompanied by robust flexibility and mechanical stability. These findings may pave the way for the development of high-performance, flexible, and cost-effective supercapacitors compatible with large-scale semiconductor device manufacturing.

1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC), a crucial intermediate in the ethylene biosynthetic pathway, plays a decisive role in regulating plant developmental processes and stress responses. In heterologous biosynthesis systems, ACC biosynthesis is inhibited due to its antibacterial activity. Enhancing ACC export confers advantages to ACC-producing biotechnological platforms and microbial cell factories. While bacterial transporters for canonical amino acids in Corynebacterium glutamicum and Escherichia coli have been extensively studied, their roles in ACC transport remain unexplored. To identify the exporters mediating ACC transport in E. coli , relevant experiments were performed in this study. The results showed that the Leucine-exporter LeuE acts as a high-efficiency ACC exporter in E. coli . Subsequently, structural modeling coupled with site-directed mutagenesis revealed that L160 is a critical residue in determining the ACC transport specificity of LeuE. The L160Y mutation enhanced E. coli tolerance to ACC, elevating the threshold from 50 mM to 100 mM. Structural modeling predicted that the L160Y mutation-induced compaction reduced the transporter channel diameter by 28% (from 9.551 Å to 6.876 Å), a change that may enhance the binding affinity of ACC. Notably, a significant reduction in intracellular ACC levels was observed in both the LeuE-overexpressing and LeuE (L160Y)-overexpressing strains. These findings enable large-scale biosynthesis of ACC and its derivatives via engineered microbial systems, thereby facilitating cost-effective development of ACC-based pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.

Currently, high-performance energy storage devices have requirements for electrode materials such as high power density, good stability, and high storage efficiency in various applications. The restacking of two-dimensional MXene nanosheets significantly impacts the performances of energy storage devices. Although three-dimensional (3D) electrode structures exhibit enhanced energy storage capacities, they possess poor stabilities and low storage efficiencies. These issues are addressed in the current study using a directional freeze-drying method and a one-step hydrothermal process to fabricate a nanoscale porous interconnected MXene/PVA (poly(vinyl alcohol))/rGO (reduced graphene oxide) composite aerogel electrode for supercapacitor applications. The rGO provides a stable conductive skeleton, while the hydrophilic PVA acts as a binder to strengthen the interactions between MXene and rGO, and contributes to the capacitance after carbonization. The resulting 3D composite aerogel increased the interlayer spacing of the Ti3C2Tx MXene, enabling efficient electrolyte penetration and ion transport. Due to the synergistic effect of the MXene pseudocapacitance and the rGO double-layer capacitance, the prepared aerogel exhibited a maximum specific capacitance of 489.7 F g–1 at a scan rate of 2 mV s–1. Furthermore, it demonstrated an excellent energy density of 30.2 W h kg–1 at a power density of 2040 W kg–1. After 10,000 charge/discharge cycles at a current density of 10 A g–1, the capacitance retention rate increased slightly to ∼103.85%, representing an excellent cyclic performance. This study offers an effective solution for MXene-based composite aerogel electrodes, meeting the demands of high-performance energy storage and guiding future material optimization.
