Ag-TiO2/biofilm/nitrate interface enhanced visible light-assisted biodegradation of tetracycline: The key role of nitrate as the electron accepter

Cheng Hou,Xinbai Jiang,Dan Chen,Xiaoyu Zhang,Xiaodong Liu,Yang Mu,Jinyou Shen

Due to the pivotal role of Ag-TiO 2 /biofilm/nitrate interface, enhanced visible light-assisted biodegradation of tetracycline (TC) in anoxic system was realized through both batch experiment and long-term operation in this study. The results of the batch experiment elucidated that 50 mg L −1 TC could be completely removed within 10 h in Ag-TiO 2 /biofilm/nitrate system. The continuous flow experiment was operated for 75 d to evaluate the performance and stability of Ag-TiO 2 /biofilm/nitrate system. TC removal efficiency in Ag-TiO 2 /biofilm/nitrate system was as high as 92.4 ± 1.6% at influent TC concentration of 50 mg L −1 TC and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 10 h, which would be attributed to the promoted separation of photoholes and photoelectrons at the presence of nitrate as electron acceptor. Facilitated electron transfer between semiconductor and biofilm was beneficial for enhancing TC biodegradation, thus lowering toxicity of intermediate products and promoting microbial activity. Moreover, the species related to TC biodegradation ( Rhodopseudomonas, Phreatobacter and Stenotrophomonas ), denitrification ( Thauera ) and electron transfer ( Delftia ) were enriched at Ag-TiO 2 /biofilm/nitrate interface. Besides, a possible mechanism involved in enhanced TC degradation and nitrogen removal at Ag-TiO 2 /biofilm/nitrate interface was proposed. This study provided a novel and promising strategy to enhance recalcitrant TC removal from industrial wastewater.

Highly sensitively detecting tetramethylthiuram disulfide based on synergistic contribution of metal and semiconductor in stable Ag/TiO2 core-shell SERS substrates

Jie Yang,Gao Song,Ling Zhou,Xinyue Wang,Lijun You,Jumei Li

In this study, we successfully constructed Ag/TiO 2 core-shell nanoparticles through an easy wet chemistry method for SERS study. Compared to Ag cores, the Ag/TiO 2 core-shell nanoparticles presented higher SERS sensitivity, owing to a synergistic SERS enhancement arising from electromagnetic field effect of Ag cores and chemical enhancement of TiO 2 shells. Furthermore, uniform TiO 2 shells were able to effectively protect the internal Ag cores against destruction in external environment and thus storage stability of Ag/TiO 2 nanoparticles was prominently improved. The as prepared Ag/TiO 2 core-shell nanoparticles were applied to quantitatively sense tetramethylthiuram disulfide (TMTD) in solution using a portable Raman spectrometer. The results showed that the SERS intensity of 563 cm −1 assigned to S-S stretching mode had a good linear relationship with the concentration of TMTD with the correlation coefficient (R 2 ) of as high as 0.99 and the detection limit of as low as 1.15 × 10 −10 M. Consequently, the prepared Ag/TiO 2 nanoparticles present specially advantage of quantifying S-S groups by SERS, because the TiO 2 shell could act as a spacer between Ag cores and TMTD molecules and keep the S-S bonds intact.

Enhancing antibacterial properties of titanium implants through a novel Ag-TiO2-OTS nanocomposite coating: a comprehensive study on resist-killing-disintegrate approach

Yu Jiang,Zhou Wan,Qi Liu,Xinxin Li,Bo Jiang,Mudan Guo,Pengjue Fan,Siyi Du,Doudou Xu,Chen Liu

Titanium (Ti) implants are widely used in orthopedic and dental applications due to their excellent biocompatibility and mechanical properties. However, bacterial adhesion and subsequent biofilm formation on implant surfaces pose a significant risk of postoperative infections and complications. Conventional surface modifications often lack long-lasting antibacterial efficacy, necessitating the development of novel coatings with enhanced antimicrobial properties. This study aims to develop a novel Ag-TiO2-OTS (Silver-Titanium dioxide-Octadecyltrichlorosilane, ATO) nanocomposite coating, through a chemical plating method. By employing a ‘resist-killing-disintegrate’ approach, the coating is designed to inhibit bacterial adhesion effectively, and facilitate pollutant removal with lasting effects. Characterization of the coatings was performed using spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and contact angle analysis. Antibacterial efficacy, quantitatively evaluated against E. coli and S. aureus over 168 h, showed a significant reduction in bacterial adhesion by 76.6% and 66.5% respectively, and bacterial removal rates were up to 83.8% and 73.3% in comparison to uncoated Ti-base material. Additionally, antibacterial assays indicated that the ratio of the Lifshitz-van der Waals apolar component to electron donor surface energy components significantly influences bacterial adhesion and removal, underscoring a tunable parameter for optimizing antibacterial surfaces. Biocompatibility assessments with the L929 cell line revealed that the ATO coatings exhibited excellent biocompatibility, with minimal cytotoxicity and no significant impact on cell proliferation or apoptosis. The ATO coatings provided a multi-functionality surface that not only resists bacterial colonization but also possesses self-cleaning capabilities, thereby marking a substantial advancement in the development of antibacterial coatings for medical implants.

Green synthesis of Ag/TiO2 composite coated porous vanadophosphates with enhanced visible-light photo-degradation and catalytic reduction performance for removing organic dyes

Shuang Wang,Yujie Wang,Linghan Li,Lei Li,Guoyuan Fu,Rui Shi,Xinyu Zou,Zhijuan Zhang,Fang Luo

As environmental pollution and energy shortages have become global concerns, the construction of highly efficient catalysts using facile and green methods remains a long-term goal. In the present study, we proposed a facile catalyst preparation method in which Ag/TiO2 composites were coated on the surface of the porous pure inorganic crystalline vanadium phosphates (VPO) by a one-step strategy. More importantly, the in situ reduction of Ag nanoparticles was achieved at room temperature without severe conditions or hydrogen atmosphere in which the porous VPO was employed as the reductant. The prepared Ag/VPO@TiO2 composites act as a class of efficient bifunctional catalysts for visible light photodegradation of MB molecules and catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol (4-NP). Among these samples, the 6.82%Ag/VPO@TiO2 composite exhibited a superior photocatalytic activity in the degradation of MB and an ultrafast reduction rate for 4-NP of about 0.1 mM/40 s. The photocatalytic mechanistic studies revealed that the encapsulated VPO with a narrow band gap not only efficiently enhances the photosensitivity of the TiO2 but also largely facilitates the photogenerated charge separation. The subsequent deposition of Ag NPs is able to further promote electron transfer ability, which leads to the higher photocatalytic activity. Moreover, the contact of Ag NPs with the surface of semiconductor TiO2 can result in an electron-enhanced area in their interface that could effectively facilitate the uptake of electrons by the 4-NP molecules and then improve the reduction activity.
