Synthesis and characterization of Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron (nZVI) as an adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of As(III) and As(V) from groundwater

Longwei Yin,Longjie Liu,Shen Lin,Gary Owens,Zuliang Chen

Arsenic (As) is a contaminant of global concern due to its negative impact on environmental systems, where As occurs mainly as two inorganic species, arsenite (As(III)) and arsenate (As(V)). Thus the simultaneously removal of both As(III) and As(V) from groundwater is a challenging issue. In this paper, zero-valent iron nanoparticles ( n ZVI) with high surface-active sites were used to simultaneously remove both As(III) and As(V) species from groundwater with removal efficiencies >99.9% for an initial concentration 100 μg L −1 . Ion chromatography atomic fluorescence (IC-AFS) analysis indicated that during removal As(III) was oxidized to As(V), while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that the As species were adsorbed on to the surface of n ZVI by a complexation reaction. Furthermore, thermodynamic studies of the adsorption process indicated that adsorption was a spontaneous and endothermic chemisorption process. Finally, practical removal of both As species by n ZVI from real groundwaters was demonstrated with removal efficiencies of 99.9 and 70.9% for As(V) and As(III), respectively. The presence of other coexisting ions affected the removal efficiency, with phosphate and carbonate decreasing the removal efficiencies of both As(III) and As(V) due competition with active binding sites on the surface of n ZVI. Overall, this work demonstrated that n ZVI was a promising adsorbent for the practical removal of inorganic As species from complex environmental matrices such as groundwater.

A comparative study on Fe(III)-chitosan and Fe(III)-chitosan-CTAB composites for As(V) removal from water: preparation, characterization and reaction mechanism

Jiang Changjin,Zhang Ting,Li Shuhui,Yang Zhaoguang

Fe(III)-chitosan and Fe(III)-chitosan-CTAB composites were prepared using an ionotropic gelation method. Various techniques were used to analyze the morphology, structure, and property of the adsorbents, including SEM, EDS, FT-IR, XPS, and zeta potential. Compared with Fe(III)-chitosan, Fe(III)-chitosan-CTAB was more effective for As(V) adsorption at a wide range of pH (3.0–8.0). The adsorption of As(V) onto Fe(III)-chitosan and Fe(III)-chitosan-CTAB could reach equilibrium in 20 min, and their maximum adsorption capacities were 33.85 and 31.69 mg g ‒1 , respectively. The adsorption kinetics was best described by the pseudo-second-order model ( R 2  = 0.998 and 0.992), whereas the adsorption isotherm was fitted well by the Freundlich model ( R 2  = 0.963 and 0.987). The presence of H 2 PO 4 – significantly inhibited the adsorption of As(V) onto Fe(III)-chitosan and Fe(III)-chitosan-CTAB, and humic acid also led to a slight decrease in As(V) adsorption by Fe(III)-chitosan-CTAB. Over 94% of As(V) at the initial concentration of no more than 5 mg L –1 was removed from real water by the two adsorbents. 1% (w/v) NaOH solution was determined to be the most suitable desorption agent. Fe(III)-chitosan and Fe(III)-chitosan-CTAB still maintained their initial adsorption capacities after five adsorption–desorption cycles. Based on different characterization results, both electrostatic attraction and surface complexation mechanisms played important roles in As(V) adsorption on Fe(III)-chitosan and Fe(III)-chitosan-CTAB.

Sensitive determination of As (III) and As (V) by magnetic solid phase extraction with Fe@polyethyleneimine in combination with hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry

Qingxiang Zhou,Zhenwen Zheng,Junping Xiao,Huili Fan

The magnetic nanomaterial Fe@polyethyleneimine (Fe@PEI) was successfully synthesized and used as an effective adsorbent material for magnetic solid phase extraction(MSPE) of As(III) and As(V) from water samples. Fe@SiO 2 nanoparticles were prepared by one pot synthetic method using a borohydride reduction method, then modified with (3-chloropropyl)trimethoxysilane to obtain Fe@SiO 2 -Cl by chloropropylation, which was reacted with PEI to achieve Fe@polyethyleneimine (Fe@PEI). The microstructure and morphology of Fe@PEI were characterized by transmission electron microscoscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The experimental results showed that Fe@PEI demonstrated excellent adsorption for As(III) and As(V). Based on this fact, the determination method for these two arsenic species earned good limits of detection (LODs) of 0.002   μg   L −1 and wide calibration curves in the concentration range from 0.008 to 0.2   μg   L −1 . The precisions of As (III) and As (V)were 1.95% and 2.55% (RSD, n =6), respectively. The proposed method was validated with real samples and the spiked recoveries were in the range of 82.7–98.3% and the accuracies were in the range of 2–13.3%. The results demonstrated that the developed MSPE method had good advantages such as simplicity, rapid separation, low cost, easy to reuse and high-quality analytical performances, which made it attractive for rapid and efficient extraction of inorganic arsenic species in the environmental water samples.

Preparation and characterization of hydrophilicity fibers based on 2-(dimethyamino)ethyl mathacrylate grafted polypropylene by UV- irradiation for removal of Cr(VI) and as(V)

Kong Zhiyun,Wu Xiaoqing,Wei Junfu,Zhang Huan,Cui Li

The hydrophilic fibers based on 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) which could remove Cr(VI) ions rapidly were prepared by UV-irradiation induced grafting of DMAEMA through pre-coating photoinitiator on the fibers and modifying with bromoethane(BE). The FTIR, FESEM, XPS, TG-DTG and contact angle spectra manifested that DMAEMA was grafted onto the surface of PP fibers and subsequently was quaternized. The maximum grafting degree (22.9 %) and exchange capacity of DMAEMA (1.2 mmol g −1 ) was obtained when PP fibers was immersed in BP concentration of 0.3 % for 4 h, irradiated with the DMAEMA concentration of 100 % and irradiation time of 20 min, and then was modified with BE. The modified fibers of PP-g-DMAEMA with bromoethane were proved to remove Cr(VI) and As(V) with removal rate of 97.3 % and 96.2 % within 10 min, respectively. The prepared fibers have potential application for the removal of Cr(VI) and As(V) from wastewater highly and rapidly.

Surface defects enhance the adsorption affinity and selectivity of Mg(OH)2 towards As(V) and Cr(VI) oxyanions: a combined theoretical and experimental study

Xinwen Ou,Xueming Liu,Weizhen Liu,Wencong Rong,Jingyuan Li,Zhang Lin

The surface defects of adsorbents are generally considered to be the active sites for adsorbates, and the adsorption behaviors of a variety of pollutants in wastewater are strongly influenced by the surface defects of the adsorbents. With simple chemical and structural properties, nano-Mg(OH)2 exhibits a high adsorption affinity and selectivity to heavy metals from wastewater. The insight into the surface complex structures of heavy metals on the Mg(OH)2 surface is fundamental for both the mechanism and application of defective adsorbents in wastewater treatment. In this study, the impact of surface defects of Mg(OH)2 nanoplates on the structure, energy, and adsorption amounts of toxic heavy metal oxyanions (HAsO42− and CrO42−) was investigated by combining the first-principles calculations and batch experiments. The first-principles calculations illustrated that the heavy metal oxyanions can be steadily incorporated into the surface defects to form inner-sphere complexes. The incorporated heavy metal oxyanions have strong charge–charge and chemical bonding interactions with the surface defect sites, which are much stronger than the hydrogen bonding interactions with the surface OH sites. Moreover, the adsorption affinity of surface defects towards heavy metal oxyanions is stronger than that towards other oxyanions (e.g. SO42− and NO3−), indicating the high adsorption selectivity of heavy metal oxyanions over other oxyanions. Batch adsorption experiments verified that the adsorption of defect-rich Mg(OH)2 adsorbents towards heavy metal ions, e.g., As(V) and Cr(VI), was favorable even under the condition of low concentration (mg L−1 level). These findings reveal the significance of surface defects of Mg(OH)2 for extracting As(V) and Cr(VI) from low-concentration solutions. The proposed strategy of surface defect-fabrication should provide a useful insight into designing effective adsorbents for the selective extraction of heavy metal oxyanions at low concentration.

Preparation of chitosan-industrial hemp residue superfine powder-Fe @ZIF67 composite as a recyclable and low cost adsorbent for congo red and heavy metal as (V)

Chang Tanran,Lv Hongning,Tan Minghui,Zheng Shumin,Gao Wei-Bo,Wang Bao,Zhao Qingsheng,Zhao Bing

Dye and heavy metal pollution has caused serious damage to water. It became a study hotspot to treatment at domestic and abroad. The abandoned industrial hemp residue after extraction of cannabidiol (CBD) commonly causes resource waste and environmental pollution. Herein, the industrial hemp residue is reused to prepare a recyclable composite with chitosan and Fe@ZIF67 magnetic metal material for the pollutant treatment. The properties of the synthesized composite are characterized by SEM, TG, BET, FT-IR, XRD, VSM, and Zeta potential analysis. Congo red (CR) and As (V) are adopted to evaluate the adsorption properties of composite. The composite shows the best adsorption effect for CR when the addition of industrial hemp residue is 20%, and the adsorption capacity is 166 mg/g. Whereas the best adsorption effect for As (V) occurs at the addition of industrial hemp residue is 2%, and the adsorption capacity is 22 mg/g. The results reveal that the developed composite has good adsorption effect on CR and As (V), suggesting the recycling of industrial hemp residue has potential for water production and industrial wastewater treatment. It may provide useful insights into the development of recovery and utilization of industrial hemp residue. Graphical abstract

Efficient transformation and elimination of roxarsone and its metabolites by a new α-FeOOH@GCA activating persulfate system under UV irradiation with subsequent As(V) recovery

Shanshan Su,Chengjin Cao,Yaping Zhao,Dionysios D. Dionysiou

Roxarsone (ROX) is extensively used as a feed additive which tends to leave toxic inorganic arsenic (As) in the natural environment. A composite of reduced graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes was impregnated with goethite designated as α-FeOOH@GCA and tested as an integrated catalyst and adsorbent for ROX decontamination. Nearly 100% of the ROX was transformed in α-FeOOH@GCA activating persulfate (PS) under UV 365 irradiation system at relatively low dosage of the α-FeOOH@GCA catalyst (250 mg L −1 ) in 120 min. The As(V) released in the ROX oxidation was simultaneously adsorbed onto the surface of the α-FeOOH@GCA. A possible ROX transformation pathway is proposed. The As(V) adsorbed on catalyst was recovered and used to form an efficient Ag 3 AsO 4 photocatalyst. This work further extends the oxidation-adsorption technology in solving organoarsenical contamination without producing secondary pollution.

Rational design of anti-interference Fe/Co MOF-coupled PMS process for As(III) removal in DOM-rich groundwater: 1O2-dominated As(III) oxidation and chemisorption of As(V)

Ying Fang,Qianwen Liu,Yang Song,Feiyue Jia,Ying Yang,Haipu Li

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) extensively exists in high-arsenic groundwater with relatively high concentration, which could not only compete with arsenic for adsorption sites, but also depress As(III) oxidation in persulfate-based advanced processes (PS-AOPs) through scavenging free radicals (SO 4 • − and •OH). In order to effectively avoid the negative effect of DOM , an Fe/Co bimetallic metal–organic framework (Fe/Co MOF)-coupled peroxymonosulfate (Fe/Co MOF-PMS) system was rationally constructed for non-radical-dominated As(III) oxidation and chemisorption-driven As(V) adsorption. Results showed that the Fe/Co MOF-PMS system did realize anti-interference As(III) immobilization in DOM-rich high-arsenic groundwater, which was evidenced by no difference in As(III) immobilization efficiencies in the absence and presence of 20 mg/L humic acid (HA). During the oxidation process, 1 O 2 dominated As(III) oxidation while O 2 • − dominated HA oxidation, and the presence of HA significantly promoted the generation of 1 O 2 besides SO 4 • − and •OH. During the adsorption process, chemical adsorption mainly drove As(V) adsorption such as forming M-O-As (M = Fe, Co) bond, while physical adsorption forces played a major role in HA adsorption, such as π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic attraction. The synergism of oxidation and adsorption processes made the anti-interference As(III) immobilization in DOM-rich high-arsenic groundwater in Fe/Co MOF-PMS system come true. This work is believed to shed light on the highly efficient purification of DOM-rich high-arsenic groundwater.

Fabrication of magnetic bifunctional composite via anchoring CoY on waste heating pad as a cycling material for peroxymonosulfate activation to degrade p-arsanilic acid and simultaneously eliminate secondary As(V)

Li Liu,Zhian Jing,Min Zhang,Xuanting Zhao,Yeqing Lan,Cheng Chen

Herein, waste heating pad, which mainly contains iron and vermiculite components after calcination in air, was used to support cobalt-yttrium bimetallic oxide for the first time. The magnetic material (IV@CoY) was applied for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to simultaneously realize the removal of p -arsanilic acid ( p -ASA) and the secondary inorganic arsenic (As(V)). 50 µM p -ASA was completely degraded in the system of IV@CoY (0.2 g/L) and PMS (0.5 mM) within 7 min, and about 99 % of the produced As(V) was adsorbed within 150 min. Electrochemical experiments illustrated that IV@CoY possessed the superior conductivity as compared to CoY, which greatly boosted PMS activation. The pseudo-first-order rate constant ( k IV@CoY ) was high up to 0.873 min −1 , which was 7.6 times larger than k CoY (0.115 min −1 ). Catalytic mechanism analyses revealed that the produced SO 4 •− , • OH and 1 O 2 participated in the oxidation of p -ASA and As(III). The adsorption of the produced As(V) was achieved by ion exchange with −OH/CO 3 2− on the surface of IV@CoY. The degradation pathways of p -ASA were further proposed on the basis of the detection of its intermediate products. Initial pH exerted a significant effect on the degradation-adsorption reaction and weak acidic or neutral condition was beneficial to the removal of p -ASA and As(V). To evaluate the practical application potential of IV@CoY, the disposal of p -ASA and secondary As(V) were also carried out in real water samples. Furthermore, IV@CoY was consecutively used for 5 times, and almost 100% degradation of p -ASA and over 97% adsorption of inorganic arsenic were still achieved even in the fifth round, which prove its high stability and reusability. Our results fully demonstrate that the magnetic IV@CoY is a promising catalyst to activate PMS for eliminating organoarsenic from water.

Speciation of as(III), as(V), total inorganic arsenic and total arsenic in sport and bodybuilding supplements using new nanocomposite for dispersive magnetic micro-solid phase extraction followed by GFAAS analysis

Weilun Huang,Zitong Xu

A novel microalgae-derived magnetic nanocomposite was engineered for As speciation. • First application of a Chlorella-based sorbent to sports supplements. • Ultra-trace arsenic determination achieved with 0.05 μg kg −1 detection limit. • Speciation revealed arsenic occurs mainly in less-toxic organic forms. Reliable speciation of inorganic arsenic in complex dietary supplements remains analytically challenging because of severe matrix interferences and the low concentrations of toxic arsenic species. In this study, a novel magnetic nanocomposite (ZnO–ZnFe₂O₄@CHL-MNCs) derived from Chlorella biomass was synthesized and employed as an efficient sorbent for ultrasound-assisted dispersive magnetic micro-solid phase extraction (UA-D-μ-SPE) prior to graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). The synergistic integration of ZnO, ZnFe₂O₄, and the porous biomass-derived carbon matrix provided abundant active adsorption sites, high magnetic responsiveness, and rapid phase separation, resulting in efficient enrichment of inorganic arsenic species. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed method exhibited a linear range of 0.15–100 μg kg −1 (R 2  = 0.994), a limit of detection of 0.05 μg kg −1 , an enrichment factor of 163, and satisfactory intra- and inter-day precisions of 4.1% and 6.3%, respectively. The method was successfully validated using a certified reference material (NMIJ CRM 7503a) and subsequently applied to the determination of As(III), As(V), total inorganic arsenic, and total arsenic in commercial sport and bodybuilding supplements. Spike recoveries ranging from 92.7% to 106.7% confirmed negligible matrix effects and excellent analytical accuracy. The proposed strategy offers a rapid, sensitive, and environmentally friendly approach for arsenic speciation in complex food matrices and represents a promising alternative for routine food safety monitoring. Coagulation performance and mechanism of different novel covalently bonded organic silicon-aluminum/iron composite coagulant for As(V) removal from water: The role of hydrolysate species and the effect of coexisting microplastics

Yanli Kong,Yahua Zhou,Pengjun Zhang,Yong Nie,Jiangya Ma

Arsenate [As(V)] pollution is a challenge for water treatment, and the effect of coexisting microplastics (MPs) on As(V) removal is still not clear. In this study, series novel covalently bonded organic silicon-aluminum/iron composite coagulants (CSA/F) with different Al/Fe molar ratios were prepared for enhancing As(V) removal. The effect mechanism of MPs (PS MPs and PS-COOH MPs) on As(V) removal by using CSAF coagulation was analyzed. CSAF and CSF showed significantly better As(V) removal performance than other coagulants under the same conditions, especially CSF, more than 90 % As(V) removal was achieved at dosage of 20 mg/L and pH of 4.0–8.0. Interestingly, the introduction of silane coupling agent and the increase of Fe content in CSA/F changed the Al/Fe species distribution. Charge neutralization dominant in As(V) removal by using CSA, whereas adsorption and net sweeping contributed to As(V) coagulation by using CSAF and CSF with higher iron proportion at neutral pH. 3 µm MPs were removed by net sweeping of amorphous Al/Fe hydroxides, while 26 µm MPs were charge-neutralized or surface adsorbed by coagulant hydrolysates. The aliphatic C-H and -COOH functional groups of MPs were the main sites of hydrogen bonding adsorption with the hydroxyl groups of coagulant hydrolysates. This study is conducive to mitigating the environmental toxicity of arsenic and provides new insights into the interaction mechanism between composite pollutants and coagulants in waters.
