Cross-Scale Defects Enable Ultralow Lattice Thermal Conductivity and High Thermoelectric Performance in Silver Nanowire-Integrated Bi2Te3/Sb2Te3 Nanoheterojunctions

Zhang Hongyu,Zhang Yunzhe,Zhai Fuqiang,Meng Xiang,Li Wen

Decoupling the intrinsically coupled electrical and thermal transport remains a central challenge for achieving high-performance thermoelectrics. Herein, we report a defect-modulated transport-decoupling strategy in anisotropic Bi 2 Te 3 /Sb 2 Te 3 (BT/ST) heterojunction nanomaterials with silver nanowires. By guiding defect evolution at the BT/ST phase boundaries, nanopore-containing heterointerfaces are constructed. Combined spatially resolved EELS observations and HRTEM/IFFT suggest that nanopores are preferentially associated with dislocation-rich heterogeneous interfacial regions. These engineered nanopores and heterogeneous interfaces effectively suppress phonon transport, leading to an ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of ∼0.13 W m –1 K –1 at 600K. Meanwhile, the two-dimensional nanoplate framework provides anisotropic transport characteristics, while silver nanowires provide additional conductive pathways and modify the interfacial electronic transport, enabling enhanced electrical conductivity while preserving a high Seebeck coefficient. As a result, the electrical and thermal transport processes are spatially regulated. The optimized BT/ST nanoheterojunctions containing 2 vol % AgNWs exhibits a peak ZT ⊥ of 0.74, corresponding to a substantial ∼174% enhancement compared with the pristine matrix. More importantly, the combination of suppressed phonon transport and preserved electrical transport parallel to the SPS pressing direction yields a high S ∥ of 169 μV K –1 and an outstanding peak ZT ∥ of 1.25 at 600 K. This work demonstrates that controllable nanopore construction and directional electrical pathway engineering are effective for realizing anisotropic carrier-phonon decoupling in high-performance thermoelectric materials.

Mediating Point Defects Endows n-Type Bi2Te3 with High Thermoelectric Performance and Superior Mechanical Robustness for Power Generation Application

Yu-Ke Zhu,Yuxin Sun,Jianbo Zhu,Kun Song,Zihang Liu,Ming Liu,Muchun Guo,Xingyan Dong,Fengkai Guo,Xiaojian Tan,Bo Yu,Wei Cai,Jun Jiang,Jiehe Sui

Bi 2 Te 3 -related alloys dominate the commercial thermoelectric market, but the layered crystal structure leads to the dissociation and intrinsic brittle fracture, especially for single crystals that may worsen the practical efficiency. In this work, point defect configuration by S/Te/I defects engineering is engaged to boost thermoelectric and mechanical properties of n-type Bi 2 Te 3 alloy, which, coupled with p-type BiSbTe, shows a competitive conversion efficiency for the fabricated module. First, as S alloying suppresses the intrinsic B i T e , antisite defects and forms a donor-like effect, electronic transport properties are optimized, associated with the decreased thermal conductivity due to the point defect scattering. The periodide compound TeI 4 is afterward adopted to further tune carrier concentration for the realization of an optimal ZT . Finally, an advanced average ZT of 1.05 with ultra-high compressive strength of 230 MPa is achieved for Bi 2 Te 2.9 S 0.1 (TeI 4 ) 0.0012 . Based on this optimum composition, a fabricated 17-pair module demonstrates a maximum conversion efficiency of 5.37% under the temperature difference of 250 K, rivaling the current state-of-the-art Bi 2 Te 3 modules. This work reveals the novel mechanism of point defect reconfiguration in synergistic enhancement of thermoelectric and mechanical properties for durably commercial application, which may be applicable to other thermoelectric systems.

3D-printed Bi2Te3-based thermoelectric devices with phase-change heat sinks: toward efficient energy harvesting and ultra-fast temperature sensing

Jian Song,Gong-Peng Cui,Chang-Ping Feng,Zheng-Ting Song,Chen-Yu Zhang,Hong-Bo Lan,Hong-Jing Shang,Fa-Zhu Ding

Conventional manufacturing methods impose inherent limitations on both the degree of design freedom and out-of-plane structural design of thermoelectric devices, thereby significantly hindering their adaptability and performance in practical applications. To address this, we employ direct ink writing (DIW) 3D-printing to fabricate an out-of-plane Bi2Te3-based device. This approach utilizes a Pluronic F-127-based ink with reversible temperature-dependent properties for structural fabrication. The printed device demonstrates efficient energy harvesting, achieving an output power of 169.45 nW. Furthermore, by integrating a 3D-printed phase-change material (PCM) as a heat sink, the temperature gradient between the hot and cold sides of the device is significantly enhanced, boosting the output power by approximately 150% to 377.50 nW. In particular, the device also exhibits ultra-fast temperature sensing capabilities, which we have successfully integrated into a wireless temperature alarm system. This work highlights a promising strategy for advanced thermal management and intelligent sensing in potential Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

Synergistic Engineering of Oxygen Vacancies and Topological Surface States in Bi2Te3/TiO2-X Heterostructures for Highly Efficient Photothermal-Driven CO2 Photoreduction

Bingke Zhang,Chenchen Zhao,Jing Qiao,Changcun Li,Yang Wang,Xingshuo Liu,Dongbo Wang,Gang Liu,Zhao Qian,Rajeev Ahuja,Jinzhong Wang,Degang Zhao

Solar-driven photothermal CO 2 reduction into multicarbon (C 2 + ) products represents a promising yet challenging route for sustainable fuel production. A key obstacle remains the inefficient C–C coupling due to poor CO 2 activation and limited charge utilization, especially under full-spectrum light. Herein, we propose a heterojunction photocatalyst that synergistically integrates the topological insulator Bi 2 Te 3 with oxygen-doped TiO 2-X to address these challenges. The metallic nature of Bi 2 Te 3 enables broad-spectrum photon harvesting from UV to near-infrared and generates substantial photothermal heat, while the oxygen vacancies in TiO 2-X create an asymmetric electronic environment that promotes CO 2 adsorption, bending, and activation. The built-in electric field formed at the heterointerface drives efficient electron transfer from Bi 2 Te 3 to TiO 2-X , which suppresses charge recombination and ensures a prolonged electron supply for multistep reduction reactions. Under full-spectrum irradiation without external heating, the optimized Bi 2 Te 3 /TiO 2-X catalyst achieves a remarkable C 2 + production rate of 15.08 μmol g −1 h −1 with selectivity toward C 2 H 4 and C 2 H 6 . Combined photoelectronic measurements and theoretical analyses confirm that the synergistic photothermal–photocatalytic effect and tailored charge dynamics collectively lower the energy barrier for C–C coupling. This work offers a strategic material design leveraging topological insulators and defect engineering for efficient CO 2 -to-C 2 + conversion.

Band alignment of type-I SnS2/Bi2Se3 and type-II SnS2/Bi2Te3 van der Waals heterostructures for highly enhanced photoelectric responses

Luo Mingwei,Lu Chunhui,Liu Yuqi,Han Taotao,Ge Yanqing,Zhou Yixuan,Xu Xinlong

Heterostructures based on new advanced materials offer a cornerstone for future optoelectronic devices with improved photoelectric performance. Band alignment is crucial for understanding the mechanism of charge carrier transportation and interface dynamics in heterostructures. Herein, we grew SnS 2 /Bi 2 X 3 (X = Se, Te) van der Waals heterostructures by combining physical vapor deposition with chemical vapor deposition. The band alignment, measured by high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, suggested the successful design of type-I SnS 2 /Bi 2 Se 3 and type-II SnS 2 /Bi 2 Te 3 heterostructures. The SnS 2 /Bi 2 X 3 heterostructure greatly improved the photoelectric response of a photoelectrochemical-type photodetector. The photocurrent densities in the type-I SnS 2 /Bi 2 Se 3 and type-II SnS 2 /Bi 2 Te 3 heterostructure-based devices were more than one order of magnitude higher than those of SnS 2 , Bi 2 Se 3 , and Bi 2 Te 3 . The improved photoelectric properties of the SnS 2 /Bi 2 X 3 heterostructures can be explained as follows: (i) the photoexcited electrons and holes are effectively separated in the heterostructures; (ii) the charge-transfer efficiency and carrier density at the interface between the SnS 2 /Bi 2 X 3 heterostructures and the electrolyte are greatly improved; (iii) the formed heterostructures expand the light absorption range. The photoelectric performance was further enhanced by efficient light trapping in the upright SnS 2 . The photoelectric response is higher in the type-I SnS 2 /Bi 2 Se 3 heterostructure than in the type-II SnS 2 /Bi 2 Te 3 heterostructure due to more efficient charge transportation at the type-I SnS 2 /Bi 2 Se 3 heterostructure/electrolyte interface. These results suggest that suitable type-I and type-II heterostructures can be developed for high-performance photodetectors and other optoelectronic devices.

Tumor microenvironment-responsive thermoelectric scaffold for on-demand antitumor therapy

Xiuwen Gao,Woding Deng,Jinhui Tan,Xiong Shuai,Jun Zan,Tailai Ye,Kaiwu Luo,Fangwei Qi,Yujun Wei,Cijun Shuai

Thermoelectric material could realize the thermal-electricity-reactive oxygen species (ROS) conversion under temperature gradient, being considered a promising candidate for tumor therapy. Nevertheless, it required exogenous excitation such as light irradiation, causing difficultity in achieving on-demand therapy. Herein, a tumor microenvironment responsive Bi 2 Te 3 –CaO 2 nanohybrid was synthetized by in situ growing calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ) nanoparticles on thermoelectric bismuth telluride (Bi 2 Te 3 ) nanosheets, and then blended with poly- l -lactic acid (PLLA) to fabricate a PLLA/Bi 2 Te 3 –CaO 2 scaffold. Once the acidic microenvironment of the tumor was sensed, the CaO 2 would serve as an intelligent switch, releasing heat through rapid hydrolysis and triggering the thermoelectrocatalysis of Bi 2 Te 3 to generate ROS, thereby achieving on-demand therapy. Results demonstrated that the scaffold exhibited rapid temperature rise and significant ROS catalytic formation ability in an acidic solution (pH 5.5), while no significant changes occurred in a neutral environment (pH 7.4). Annexin V-FITC/PI staining and JC-1 assay demonstrated that the generated ROS could induce tumor apoptosis by reducing mitochondrial membrane potential. Besides, the fluorescent probe test revealed that CaO 2 could also produce hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and calcium ions (Ca 2+ ) to interfere with intracellular Ca 2+ , thereby further enhancing the antitumor effect. Overall, this work proposed a novel perspective for on-demand antitumor therapy.

Construction of topological insulator Bi2Te3 bridged Zn3In2S6/C3N5 ternary heterojunction with step-scheme/type-I synergistic charge transfer for boosted visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Huiyang Xu,Junwei Zhuo,Wenjun Chen,Zhiwei Li,Xiaorui Huang,Yongyi Li,Shuanglong Li,Bo Wang,Junyu Huang,Zimo Wang,Wei Li

A novel Zn 3 In 2 S 6 @Bi 2 Te 3 @C 3 N 5 ternary S-scheme/Type-I heterojunction is constructed. • Topological insulator Bi 2 Te 3 serves as the charge transport bridge. • The catalyst has an exceptional HER rate (42384.11 μmol g −1  h −1 ) with a 29.83% AQY. Addressing the core electrochemical bottlenecks of sluggish interfacial charge transfer and the charge separation-redox capability trade-off in photoelectrochemical water splitting, this work introduces 3D topological insulator Bi 2 Te 3 as a backscattering-free electrochemical charge transport bridge to construct a Zn 3 In 2 S 6 @Bi 2 Te 3 @C 3 N 5 ternary heterojunction with Step-scheme/Type-I synergistic charge transfer. The rationally optimized sample achieves an exceptional visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution rate of 42384.11 μmol g −1  h −1 with an apparent quantum yield of 29.83% at 420 nm, which are 1.68 and 27.43 times higher than those of pristine Zn 3 In 2 S 6 and as-synthesized C 3 N 5 , respectively. The superior performance originates from three synergistic effects: enhanced light harvesting by the multi-component system, promoted carrier separation driven by the robust built-in electric field at heterointerfaces, and improved charge transport efficiency along with optimized hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics endowed by Bi 2 Te 3 's topological properties. These advantages accelerate electron transport and suppress non-radiative recombination, providing insights for optimizing the kinetics of the HER at the electrochemical interface. Photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production offers a promising route to address the energy crisis; however, the rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers in conventional photocatalysts severely limits their efficiency. To overcome this bottleneck, we designed and constructed a novel Zn 3 In 2 S 6 @Bi 2 Te 3 @C 3 N 5 ternary heterojunction photocatalyst. In this system, Bi 2 Te 3 acts as a topological insulator and charge-transport bridge, forming a cascaded band alignment with Zn 3 In 2 S 6 and C 3 N 5 . This establishes a synergistic charge-transfer pathway that effectively promotes the spatial separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. The optimized catalyst exhibits outstanding visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution performance, achieving a remarkable HER rate of 42384.11 μmol g −1  h −1 and a high apparent quantum yield of 29.83% at 420 nm, along with excellent long-term cycling stability. This work provides new insights into designing efficient and stable photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution. Download: Download high-res image (381KB) Download: Download full-size image

Photo-thermoelectric cascade conversion drove valence state cycling of Bi2Te3@V2C heterojunction in poly(L-lactic acid) scaffold for antitumor therapy, antibacterial infection, and bone regeneration

Xiuwen Gao,Jinhui Tan,Chong Lin,Gao Pan,Huixing Li,Fangwei Qi,Xin Li,Shuping Peng,Cijun Shuai

Photo-thermoelectric-driven vanadium valence cycling enhanced ROS generation. • NIR-triggered electrical stimulation activated calcium signaling for osteogenesis. • Synergistic antitumor and antibacterial efficacy was achieved through self-enhanced chemodynamic and thermoelectric catalysis therapy. • A multifunctional scaffold achieved tumor/bacteria elimination and bone repair. The peroxidase-like activity of vanadium carbide MXene (V 2 C) nanozyme drove the valence transition from V 3+ to V 4+ , and catalyzed hydrogen peroxide to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) for eliminating tumor and bacteria, exhibiting potential in post-resection osteosarcoma therapy. However, V 4+ could not spontaneously reduce to V 3+ , interrupting the generation of ROS. To address this, a scaffold strategy based on photo-thermoelectric driven valence cycle was proposed. Specifically, Bi 2 Te 3 @V 2 C heterojunction was constructed via electrostatic self-assembly and then incorporated into poly(L-lactic acid) scaffold using additive manufacturing technology. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results demonstrated that under near-infrared light irradiation, photo-thermoelectric bismuth telluride (Bi 2 Te 3 ) generated electrons via the Seebeck effect, which efficiently reduced V 4+ to V 3+ , thereby achieving vanadium ion valence cycling and enhancing ROS production. Simultaneously, the photothermal effect of Bi 2 Te 3 enhanced peroxidase-like reaction efficiency. Furthermore, Bi 2 Te 3 triggered redox reactions through thermoelectric catalysis properties, thereby elevating ROS production levels and further enhancing antitumor and antibacterial efficacy. The scaffold-generated ROS induced mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis in tumor cells, while also causing the leakage of bacterial intracellular substances to reduce implant-related infection risks. The experimental results showed that both its antitumor and antibacterial rates exceeded 95%. Moreover, the scaffold delivered non-invasive electrical stimulation through photo-thermoelectric conversion, which activated calcium signaling pathways to promote bone repair. This study provided a multifunctional scaffold with antitumor, antibacterial and osteogenic capabilities.

Surface treatment by crystalline Co-P coating with ultra-thin CoTe2 layer for improved electrical and mechanical properties of the n-type Bi2Te3/Sn TEG electrode

Shuang Liu,Limin Ma,Cheng Zhen,Dan Li,Yishu Wang,Qiang Jia,Fu Guo

Bismuth telluride-based thermoelectric generators (TEG) were widely used in the clean recovery of waste heat, but frequent failure problems at the hot-end electrode interface limited the reliable service of TEGs. Diffusion at the electrode interface between n-type Bi 2 Te 3 and Sn-based solder seriously damaged the performance of the TEGs. In this work, the crystalline Co-4 at.% P coating was deposited to protect the n-type thermoelectric material Bi 2 Te 3 . The microstructural characterization proved that the Co-P coating effectively resisted the diffusion of Sn, Bi, Te and Cu atoms, and prevented the generation of brittle intermetallic compounds (IMC) and cracks at the interface. Ultra-thin CoTe 2 layer was formed between Co-P and Bi 2 Te 3 , much thinner than the brittle Ni-Te layer reported in the literatures. It not only showed that a good metallurgical bond was formed between Co-P and Bi 2 Te 3 , but also implied the Co-P only consumed little thermoelectric elements. After the 150-hour aging test at 423 K, the shear strength of the electrode joints did not decrease, and the power generation sustainability of thermoelectric pillars was significantly improved compared with uncoated pillars. Overall, the crystalline Co-P coating would be an excellent candidate to protect the n-type Bi 2 Te 3 pillars of the TEGs.

Microwave-Actuated Hot-Carrier/Polarization Triggers Catalysis to Coordinate Staphylococcus aureus Ribosome Stalling and Treat Deep-Seated Infections

Yuqian Qiao,Zhiyuan Sang,Ting Zhang,Xiangmei Liu,Qing He,Jiaxiang Qin,Ziting Liu,Xin Qian,Zheng Yang,Yufeng Zheng,Yu Zhang,Zhaoyang Li,Shengli Zhu,Hui Jiang,Zhenduo Cui,Shuilin Wu

Due to the low energy of microwaves (MW), MW dynamic therapy (MWDT) remains inefficient in treating deep-seated infections. Here, an MW-actuated hot-carrier/polarization-triggers catalysis strategy is proposed via two types of tandem reactors to amplify the efficacy of MWDT. By combining MW-thermosensitive carbon nanotube (CNT) with thermal-electricity conversion materials, the Seebeck-type and pyroelectric-type MW-thermal-electricity tandem reactors (CNT-Bi 2 Te 3 and CNT-ZnO) are prepared. The CNT converts MW into a local heat source and rapidly heats Bi 2 Te 3 or ZnO to activate hot-carrier or polarization for high-yield reactive oxygen species production to treat deep-seated infections. Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses reveal MW stalls the ribosomes of Staphylococcus aureus , thereby hindering its proliferation. Therefore, the biocompatible tandem reactor synergizes with bacterial ribosome stalling to demonstrate a targeted bactericidal effect in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, a series of antimicrobial products is developed for precise and efficient antimicrobial therapies.
