Study on the modification of 3D BiOCl via porous biochar and photocatalytic degradation mechanism

Chi Fei,Bin Hui,An Liu,Houqi Zhou,Ting Xu,Chunyu Chen,Dianchun Ju,Zuoqiao Zhu,Han Ma,Rui Mao

"Waste for waste" is gradually becoming a new requirement for pollution management in the context of "carbon neutrality". Therefore, this study prepared porous biochar (AC) by pyrolyzing plant-derived sugarcane waste and synthesized AC-coated 3D BiOCl composite material (AC-BiOCl) using a one-step solvothermal method. The 3D BiOCl grows in situ, gradually assembling into a flower-like structure, with AC doping into the 3D BiOCl lattice. Experimental results indicate that, compared to 3D BiOCl, AC-BiOCl exhibits outstanding photocatalytic performance under visible light irradiation, as well as excellent stability and reproducibility, with a kinetic constant 3.75 times that of BiOCl. The 3D structure of BiOCl provides numerous active sites, while AC-BiOCl not only shortens the ion diffusion pathway and provides additional active sites, also enhances charge transport efficiency. The strong interaction between AC and 3D BiOCl facilitates carrier separation and inhibits the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The effects of catalyst dosage, organic dye concentration, and pH on the photocatalytic performance of AC-BiOCl were investigated. Furthermore, the photocatalytic degradation mechanism was elucidated, revealing that the primary active species in AC-BiOCl are superoxide radicals (•O - 2 ) and holes (h + ). This study proposed a viable strategy for maximizing the utilization of environmentally friendly biomass-modified photocatalytic materials.

Construction of S-scheme BiOCl/CdS composite for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of antibiotic

Yang Lu,Wang Juan,Zhang Yi,Zhou Binhua,Tan Pengfei,Pan Jun

Developing semiconductor-based photocatalytic systems with wide spectral response and effective charge separation is critical to rapidly and efficiently remove antibiotics residues in water. Herein, S-scheme BiOCl/CdS nanocomposites have been successfully designed and synthesized by decorating CdS nanoparticles on the two-dimensional BiOCl nanosheets through a simple hydrothermal method. The composition, microstructure and optical properties of the prepared samples were thoroughly investigated. Tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) was used as the model pollutant to estimate the photocatalytic properties of BiOCl/CdS catalysts. All the obtained BiOCl/CdS nanocomposites showed enhanced photocatalytic removal of TC-HCl. Especially, the optimal sample showed the highest photodegradation rate, which was 2.94 and 4.73 times that of bare CdS and BiOCl, respectively. The improved degradation of TC-HCl for BiOCl/CdS photocatalysts was ascribed to the increased light absorption as well as the boosted separation and transfer of carriers. Based on the results of active group capture experiment, transient photocurrent, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and band structure, the S-scheme charge transfer mechanism for TC-HCl degradation in this BiOCl/CdS photocatalytic system was also discussed.

Preparation of BiOCl/Bi2WO6 Photocatalyst for Efficient Fixation on Cotton Fabric: Applications in UV Shielding and Self-Cleaning Performances

Jiayi Chen,Kuang Wang,Jialong Tian,Wenhui Yu,Yujie Chen,Na Li,Zhenming Qi,Chunxia Wang

In this work, a visible-light-driven BiOCl/Bi2WO6photocatalyst was obtained via a facile hydrothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet/visible light diffuse reflection spectroscopy (UV/Vis), and photocurrent (PC). BiOCl/Bi2WO6was modified with (3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride to obtain the cationized BiOCl/Bi2WO6. Cotton fabric was pretreated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium chloroacetate solution to obtain carboxymethylated cotton fabric, which was further reacted with cationized BiOCl/Bi2WO6to achieve finished cotton fabric. The cotton fabrics were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), XRD, SEM, and EDS. The photocatalytic activity of the BiOCl/Bi2WO6photocatalyst and cotton fabrics was assessed by photocatalytic degradation of MB (methylene blue) solution under simulated visible light. The self-cleaning property of cotton fabrics was evaluated by removing MB solution and red-wine stains. Results revealed that the coated cotton fabrics exhibited appreciable photocatalytic and self-cleaning performance. In addition, anti-UV studies showed that the finished cotton fabrics had remarkable UV blocking properties in the UVA and UVB regions. Therefore, the finished cotton fabric with BiOCl/Bi2WO6can provide a framework for the development of multifunctional textiles.Keywords:BiOCl/Bi2WO6;cotton fabric;UV shielding;photocatalysis;self-cleaning

Yingxiang He,Jianmin Gu,Adan Li

Gray bismuth chloride nanosheets with a highly enhanced electric field intensity were prepared by a simple and efficient method. Their energy gap is reduced to 2.35 eV. The prepared nanosheets show high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B under visible light. The resulting samples were characterized by X-ray diffractometry, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, specific surface area analysis, electrochemical analysis, electron paramagnetic resonance, and UV–vis spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of prepared BiOCl was evaluated by the degradation of RhB. The prepared BiOCl sample (0.5 g/L) could completely degrade RhB (10 mg/L) within 10 min, and its visible photocatalytic activity was 80 times that of the original white BiOCl. Superoxide radicals were the main active substance involved in organic degradation.

Insight into facet-dependent photocatalytic H2O2 production on BiOCl nanosheets

Yating Xu,Hanping Fu,Ling Zhao,Lishan Jian,Qingshuang Liang,Xiufeng Xiao

Hydrogen peroxide is an important high-energy product widely used in various fields. Highly efficient semiconductor photocatalysts, especially those that can produce H2O2 both from water oxidation and O2 reduction, are eagerly desired. In this work, BiOCl nanosheets with preferentially exposed (001) and (010) facets were synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method. The facet-dependent photocatalytic H2O2 generation activities of these BiOCl nanosheets were assessed. The hydrogen peroxide evolution rate of BiOCl(001) is about 2-fold higher than that of BiOCl(010), which is assigned to the higher separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. Interestingly, both the EPR study and active species trapping experiments demonstrate that the generation of H2O2 on the BiOCl(001) photocatalyst mostly originates from sequential two step single-electron O2 reduction, while there are two pathways for photocatalytic H2O2 production on BiOCl(010), from both oxygen reduction and water oxidation. This work offers a new strategy to pursue highly efficient semiconductor photocatalysts with two pathways for H2O2 production from both water oxidation and O2 reduction.

Ultrathin BiOCl crystals grown in highly disordered vapor micro-turbulence for deep ultraviolet photodetectors

Guo Qing,Wang Xiu-Jun,Wang Lin,Ye Xin,Li A-Lei,Pan Xiao-Hang,Zhong Yun-Lei,Zhang Yong,Kang Li-Xing

Crystallization, while a common process in nature, remains one of the most mysterious phenomena. Understanding its physical mechanisms is essential for obtaining high-quality crystals. Typically, crystals grown by thermal evaporation or sublimation nucleate the substrate facing the evaporation source. Here, a novel vapor micro-turbulence mass transport mechanism in the growth process of ultrathin BiOCl single crystals has been revealed. In this mechanism, the precursor vapor bypasses the solid substrate, forming micro-turbulent vaporizing flows to nucleate on the surface of the substrate facing away from the evaporation source. Considering nucleation kinetics, fast shear flows are known to cause secondary nucleation, increasing nucleation quantity while decreasing the final size of the crystals. Thus, the nucleation and growth process of BiOCl crystals are controlled by adjusting the micro-turbulence intensity to reduce shear flow energy and dilate phase distribution, resulting in BiOCl crystals with uniform distribution and regular shape. Subsequent structural and morphological characterization confirms the high crystallization quality of the obtained crystals, and the performance of the constructed solar-blind photodetectors is comparable to that of similar devices. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of vapor mass transport and crystal growth techniques and may be useful for applications related to metal oxide crystals. Graphical abstract

Template-free formation of BiOCl double-shelled hollow microspheres with enhanced carbamazepine removal efficiency

Xuejuan Huang,Pengcheng Wang,Qingqing Jiang,Juncheng Hu

Constructing three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical structure is regarded as an effective strategy to alleviate the inherent drawbacks of the BiOCl bulk structure and realize the optimization of photocatalytic performance. Herein, a unique BiOCl double-shelled hollow microsphere structure with adjustable shell thickness is fabricated through a template-free one-pot solvothermal method for the first time. A plausible formation mechanism is proposed by exploring the morphological changes during the growth process. The as-obtained hollow microspheres photocatalyst exhibits excellent carbamazepine (CBZ) degradation efficiency (97.5%) under simulated solar irradiation, the corresponding apparent rate constant is about 4 times and 3 times than that of conventional BiOCl solid microspheres. The experimental and characterization results show that the existence of nanosheet subunits and porous structures shorten the diffusion length of charge carriers, which is conducive to the separation and transfer of photogenerated. Meanwhile, the construction of double-shelled hollow structure achieves higher light utilization. This work demonstrates the superior performance of catalysts with hierarchical hollow structures for pollutant degradation and provides new ideas to further optimize the photocatalytic performance of BiOCl-based materials.

Preparation of PCN/BiOCl Composites and Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline Hydrochloride

Zhixin Ren,Hongyue Chen,Qing Xu,Yiying Zhang,Yuguang Lv,Shuang Liu,Haiyang Liu

s PCN/BiOCl composites were prepared and identified by means of XRD, SEM, EDS, TEM, XPS, DRS, BET, PL, I-T, EIS, and M-S. The results show that PCNB has the best photocatalytic effect. The composites were used for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). TC photocatalytic degradation was accomplished by applying this material. Among them, PCNB50 had the best photocatalytic effect at 120 min of light exposure, and the degradation rate could reach 95.4%. The kinetics were analyzed and conformed to the first-order kinetic equations. The k value was 0.0212, which was three times that of PCN and four times that of CN. In this paper, the response surface was introduced to investigate the effects of pH, feeding amount, actual water samples, common anions, and cations in water on PCNB. Seven experiments were conducted on the catalyst to explore its cycling stability. This paper also calculated the valence band, conduction band, and flat band potential values of each material, and proposed the possible Z-type photocatalytic mechanism. The synthesized catalyst was also used for the photocatalytic levofloxacin (LVF) degradation, and the effect was good. This work will provide information visible light degradation and further removal of tetracycline hydrochloride, levofloxacin for future studies.

Photoelectrochemical sensor for nitrite determination based on the etching of BiOCl/Zn0.5Cd0.5S

Zaofen Wang,Di Yang,Yunzhu Tan,Xu Liu,Xinyu Zhang,Zhenchao Wang,Danping Chen,Bingqian Liu

A rapid photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was constructed for nitrite detection in food based on the one-step chemical etching strategy of BiOCl/Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (BOC/ZCS) nanocomposites by nitrite. BOC/ZCS heterojunction was prepared by a simple coprecipitation method, and it was found that BOC/ZCS showed significant photoelectrochemical (PEC) activity. The results of this study confirmed that the decrease in the photocurrent of the sensor was linked to the etching of ZCS by nitrite under acidic conditions. Under optimized conditions, the BOC/ZCS-based PEC sensor showed good analytical properties for detecting nitrite, with linear ranges of 1–100 μM and 100–600 μM. The detection limit of the sensor was 0.41 μM (S/N = 3). Excellent repeatability, reproducibility, low background noise, and immunity to interference were demonstrated using the proposed system, and satisfactory results were achieved for the nitrite assay using real samples. These results demonstrate a new method for nitrite detection developed using the proposed PEC sensor.

Enhanced photocatalytic performance of layered carbon microsphere/BiOCl composite with oxygen vacancies

Min Zhao,Yajun Yang,Zhenxing Zha,Shihai Cui,Yafei Li,Jing Yang

In this work, carbon microsphere/BiOCl heterojunction with oxygen vacancy was synthesized by the hydrothermal method . The structure, morphology and physicochemical properties have been investigated and discussed through a series of characterizations. The photocatalytic performance of the carbon microsphere/BiOCl composite for tetracycline degradation was twice as high as that of pristine BiOCl. The increased photocatalytic activity was attributed to oxygen vacancies and suitable charge transfer pathways. In addition, three-dimension excitation emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy and Fukui indices were used to speculate the degradation products and pathways of tetracycline. The organic norfloxacin was found to have an antagonistic effect and the inorganic Cr (VI) had a synergistic effect on tetracycline degradation. Furthermore, the possible photocatalytic mechanism was explored through density functional theory and energy band structure . Therefore, this composite has great potential for the photocatalytic removal of tetracycline from water.

Construction of Z-scheme AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction with oxygen vacancies for improved pollutant degradation and bacterial inactivation

Shuai Fu,Zhiliang Chu,Zhiquan Huang,Xiaomei Dong,Junhong Bie,Zhe Yang,Huijie Zhu,Wanyu Pu,Wanzhe Wu,Bo Liu

A facile Z-scheme AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction photocatalyst with oxygen vacancies was fabricated by a water-bath method. The structural, morphological, optical and electronic properties of as-synthesized samples were systematically characterized. The oxygen vacancies were confirmed by EPR, which could optimize the band-gap of the AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction and improve the photo-induced electron transfer. The optimized AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction showed excellent photocatalytic degradation efficiency (82%) for tetracycline (TC). Simultaneously, E. coli was completely inactivated within 60 min due to the AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction. The elevated catalytic activity of the optimal AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction was ascribed to the synergistic effect of the enhanced light absorption and effective photoinduced charge carrier separation and transfer. Moreover, the degradation efficiency of the AgCl/BiOCl heterojunction towards ofloxacin, norfloxacin and Lanasol Red 5B was 73%, 74% and 96%, respectively. The experimental factors for the degradation efficiency of TC were also studied. Furthermore, active species trapping experiments indicated that superoxide radicals (˙O2−) were the main reactive species, and the Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism helped to improve the photocatalytic activity.

Facile synthesis of a direct Z-scheme BiOCl–phosphotungstic acid heterojunction for the improved photodegradation of tetracycline

Haijuan Tong,Bingfang Shi,Shulin Zhao

The fabrication of a Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst can effectively modulate the electron transfer and separation of photoinduced charge carriers to enhance photocatalytic performance. Here, we demonstrate a direct Z-scheme BiOCl–phosphotungstic acid (BiOCl–HPW) heterojunction, fabricated via a one-step hydrothermal synthesis, as a highly active and stable photocatalyst for the photodegradation of tetracycline. BiOCl–HPWs result in a dramatic improvement in visible-light utilization and photogenerated e− and h+ separation, as well as a decrease in the electrical resistance by the addition of HPW. Notably, the BiOCl–HPW heterojunction with optimized phosphotungstic acid (HPW) content achieved an outstanding photodegradation rate of tetracycline (0.0195 min−1). A reasonable Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism based on the analysis of band structure and monitoring of active radicals is proposed. This study highlights the potential implications of the BiOCl–HPW heterojunctions in the photodegradation of other toxic chemicals and photocatalytic studies.
