Boosting photothermal CO2 hydrogenation with H2O by MIL-100(Fe) derived Fe@C confined Ni2P

Pengfei Zhu,Mengrong Geng,Shuang Qin,Heyang Cao,Zhenhong He,Xinhua Gao,Chuanyi Wang

The conversion of CO 2 into chemical products or fuels of great value always remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we report a heterojunction Fe@C/Ni 2 P composite catalyst obtained by preparing MIL-100(Fe) derived Fe@C confined Ni 2 P nanoparticles, which is applied to photothermal catalytic CO 2 hydrogenation with H 2 O. Without adding any sacrificial agents or co-catalysts, the optimal Fe@C/Ni 2 P sample shows higher yields for CO 2 -to-C 2 H 6 and CO 2 -to-CO yield of 5.83 μmol g −1 h −1 and 179.9 μmol g −1 h −1 than that of pristine Fe@C and Ni 2 P, respectively. The experimental results indicated that the obtained Fe@C/Ni 2 P can act as catalytic sites to adsorb, activate, and convert CO 2 under low-intensity LED light irradiation (420 nm) with a temperature of 200 ℃. The physical structure, photochemical properties and energy band structure of the Fe@C/Ni 2 P composite catalysts were investigated by XRD, XPS, FT-IR, TEM, BET, respectively. Furthermore, the reaction pathway of Fe@C/Ni 2 P photothermal catalytic CO 2 hydrogenation with H 2 O to C2 products and CO were systematically analyzed by in situ infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS).

Synergistic modulation of valence state and oxygen vacancy induced by surface reconstruction of the CeO2/CuO catalyst toward enhanced electrochemical CO2 reduction

Fangfang Chang,Zhenmao Zhang,Yan Zhang,Yongpeng Liu,Lin Yang,Xiaolei Wang,Zhengyu Bai,Qing Zhang

Electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) offers a promising strategy for CO 2 conversion into value-added C 2+ products and facilitates the storage of renewable resources under comparatively mild conditions, but still remains a challenge. Herein, we propose the strategy of surface reconstruction and interface integration engineering to construct tuneable Cu 0 –Cu + –Cu 2+ sites and oxygen vacancy oxide derived from CeO 2 /CuO nanosheets (OD-CeO 2 /CuO NSs) heterojunction catalysts and promote the activity and selectivity of CO 2 RR. The optimized OD-CeO 2 /CuO electrocatalyst shows the maximum Faradic efficiencies for C 2+ products in the H-type cell, which reaches 69.8% at −1.25 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Advanced characterization analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirm the fact that the existence of oxygen vacancies and Cu 0 –Cu + –Cu 2+ sites modified with CeO 2 is conducive to CO 2 adsorption and activation, enhances the hydrogenation of *CO to *CHO, and further promotes the dimerization of *CHO, thus promoting the selectivity of C 2+ generation. This facile interface integration and surface reconstruction strategy provides an ideal strategy to guide the design of CO 2 RR electrocatalysts.

Synergistic effect of K and Zn on Fe-based catalysts for efficient CO2 hydrogenation

Jia-Min Lyu,Shen Yu,Zhan Liu,He-You Du,Ming-Hui Sun,Chun-Mu Guo,Yi-Long Wang,Yu Li,Li-Hua Chen,Bao-Lian Su

Excessive emission of CO2 into the atmosphere has severely impacted the global ecological environment. Converting CO2 into valuable chemicals and fuels is of great significance for sustainable development. However, low activity and undesirable selectivity often result from the inherent inertness of CO2. Herein, K- or/and Zn-modified Fe-based catalysts were prepared by an incipient-wetness impregnation method for CO2 hydrogenation via a cascade reaction. The results indicate that K species exist as K2O while Zn species exist as ZnFe2O4. In the CO2 hydrogenation pathway, K2O facilitates the adsorption of CO2 and restrains the adsorption of H2, accelerating the transformation of CO2 into C2–C4 olefins rather than paraffins while Zn species promote the dispersion of Fe species, leading to improved activity. Synergistically, a K- and Zn-modified Fe-based catalyst (2Zn–10K–Fe/Al) shows excellent catalytic CO2 hydrogenation activity, achieving a CO2 conversion of 77% which is 1.8 times that (42%) of the unmodified Fe-based catalyst (Fe/Al). Our catalyst also shows a significantly promoted selectivity to C2–C4 olefins of 17% in comparison with the Fe/Al catalyst (0%). It is envisioned that such a binary effect of elements might contribute to the low-cost and industrial production of Fe-based catalysts for selective CO2 conversion.

CeOx-Assisted Cu2O-Based Hybrid Nanocatalysts for CO2 Electroreduction to C2+ Products

Yanshuang Xiong,Zhiwei Jian,Ian Jimmy Madatta,Yang Liu,Jinrui Ding

Electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce multicarbon products (C2+) holds immense potential for reducing carbon emissions and realizing high-valued CO2 utilization. However, the development of efficient catalysts still remains challenging. Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) has been identified as a promising candidate, yet its C2+ selectivity and stability require further improvement. In this study, we, for the first time, blended Cu2O with cerium oxide (CeOx) nanoparticles, forming a Cu2O/CeOx hybrid catalyst which greatly enhanced the selectivity and durability for C2+ production. The optimized catalyst achieved a remarkable carbon product Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 79.6% and a C2+ product FE of 58% (±2.4%) in an H-type electrolytic cell. Our findings provide a novel strategy for significantly improving the selectivity, efficiency, and catalyst stability of CO2 electroreduction.

Surface-Strained Intermetallic Pd3Pb Concave Nanocubes for Selective C2-Pathway Ethanol Electrooxidation

Haoyu Sun,Yingying Wang,Yuanyuan Min,Yanyun Ma,Yiqun Zheng

Abstract Selective electrooxidation of ethanol to acetate via the C2 pathway offers a sustainable route to high-value chemicals, but achieving high activity and selectivity on Pd-based catalysts remains challenging. Here, we report ordered intermetallic Pd3Pb concave nanocubes (CNCs) with engineered surface strain as selective electrocatalysts for ethanol-to-acetate conversion. The Pd3Pb CNCs deliver a mass activity of 1841.7 mA mg–1 and a specific activity of 5.6 mA cm–2 in an alkaline electrolyte, outperforming Pd3Pb nanocuboids and commercial Pd/C. Notably, 1H NMR quantification reveals a faradaic efficiency of ∼92% toward acetate, demonstrating outstanding C2 pathway selectivity. The concave morphology introduces high-index facets and localized lattice strain, while the ordered intermetallic structure modulates the Pd d-band center. DFT calculations show that tensile strain on Pd3Pb(111) and (100) surfaces lowers the rate-determining barriers of the C2 pathway relative to the C1 pathway, kinetically favoring acetate formation. This work demonstrates that surface strain engineering in intermetallic Pd3Pb can effectively steer ethanol electrooxidation toward selective acetate production.

Crystal defects engineering of BiOI elevated photocatalytic CO2 to C2 conversion performance

Huang Fuxia,Liu Yifei,Wang Feng,Liu Ya,Guo Liejin

BiOI materials show significant potential for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction, but their limited CO 2 activation and poor charge carrier properties hinder conversion efficiency. In this study, we engineered BiOI-based photocatalysts with abundant crystal defects to enhance performance. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) revealed lattice distortions and twin crystals in BiOI-LD and BiOI-TC. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, micropore and chemisorption analyses, and photoluminescence spectroscopy demonstrated that crystal defects improved light absorption, CO 2 adsorption, charge transfer efficiency, and carrier lifetime. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy showed increased superoxide radical generation in BiOI-TC, suggesting higher reactivity. Consequently, BiOI achieved a CH 3 CH 2 OH generation rate of 6.2 µmol g −1 h −1 with 100% selectivity. Key intermediates (*CO, *COCO, *CHO, *CH 2 ) for CH 3 CH 2 OH production were identified, and C 2 H 6 formation in BiOI-LD was linked to the generation of *CH 3 .

Granular protruded irregular Cu2O catalysts for efficient CO2 reduction to C2 products

Zhiwei Jian,Jiangwei Yu,Ian Jimmy Madatta,Yang Liu,Jinrui Ding

The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to high-energy multi-carbon compounds is a significant challenge. Efforts have been made to design efficient catalysts for high selectivity toward multi-carbon products. In this study, granular protruded irregular Cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) nanoparticles were synthesized using a simple water bath wet chemical reduction method. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was utilized as a directing agent to control the morphology of Cu 2 O in the process. The optimized irregular Cu 2 O (ir-Cu 2 O) catalyst exhibits a remarkable faraday efficiency of 69.3% (±3.3%) for double-carbon compounds (C 2 ), which is significantly higher than that of polyhedral Cu 2 O (p-Cu 2 O) (50.4%±1.1%) synthesized without adding PEG . Cu 2 O nanoparticles with irregular shape featuring randomly distributed spherical protrusions offer more active sites for CO 2 adsorption than p-Cu 2 O catalysts, which is beneficial for the conversion of CO 2 to C 2 . In addition, in situ infrared spectra reveal that ir-Cu 2 O reduces CO 2 to C 2 mainly through the coupling of the CO* and CHO*, thereby promoting the formation of C 2 . These findings provide valuable insights for the design of high-efficiency electrocatalysts for CO 2 electroreduction to C 2 .

Silkworm pupae extract attenuates diabetic kidney disease through inhibiting apoptosis

Zhixuan Xie,Luping Wang,Binqi Wang,Xueli Man,Yifei Wang,Taian Jin,Jiahui Ma,Eman Shawky,Samah Elsohafy,Tingfang Ma,Jianhua Li,Juan Jin,Qiang He,Jingkui Tian

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD), a prevalent microvascular complication affecting over 40 % of diabetes patients globally, imposes substantial burdens on healthcare systems through its dual impact on renal function deterioration and cardiovascular mortality. Silkworm pupae (SWP) is an ancient functional food documented in Chinese Materia Medica and Southeast Asian dietary practices, has recently emerged as a research focus due to its unique composition of chitin-derived peptides, antioxidant flavonoids, and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory components. Building upon existing evidence of SWP's anti-inflammatory properties, this investigation evaluated the renoprotective effects of SWP in two representative stages—C2 (the fragile and soft stage) and C4 (nearly eclosion). The results indicated that SWP alleviated renal dysfunction and renal fibrosis through inhibiting apoptosis in DM mice. Notably, C2-stage extracts outperformed C4 counterparts in restoring podocyte integrity. These findings position SWP as a nutraceutical intervention for DKD management.

In Situ Topotactic Transformation of an Interstitial Alloy for CO Electroreduction

Changming Zhao,Gan Luo,Xiaokang Liu,Wei Zhang,Zhijun Li,Qian Xu,Qinghua Zhang,Huijuan Wang,Deming Li,Fangyao Zhou,Yunteng Qu,Xiao Han,Zezhou Zhu,Geng Wu,Jing Wang,Junfa Zhu,Tao Yao,Yafei Li,Henny J.M. Bouwmeester,Yuen Wu

Electrochemical reduction of CO to value-added products holds promise for storage of energy from renewable sources. Copper can convert CO into multi-carbon (C 2+ ) products during CO electroreduction. However, developing a Cu electrocatalyst with a high selectivity for CO reduction and desirable production rates for C 2+ products remains challenging. Herein, highly lattice-disordered Cu 3 N with abundant twin structures as a precursor electrocatalyst is examined for CO reduction. Through in situ activation during the CO reduction reaction (CORR) and concomitant release of nitrogen, the obtained metallic Cu° catalyst particles inherit the lattice dislocations present in the parent Cu 3 N lattice. The de-nitrified catalyst delivers an unprecedented C 2+ Faradaic efficiency of over 90% at a current density of 727 mA cm −2 in a flow cell system. Using a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyzer with a solid-state electrolyte (SSE), a 17.4 vol% ethylene stream and liquid streams with concentration of 1.45 m and 230 × 10 −3 m C 2+ products at the outlet of the cathode and SSE-containment layer are obtained.

Intermediate enrichment effect of porous Cu catalyst for CO2 electroreduction to C2 fuels

Bao Liu,Chao Cai,Baopeng Yang,Kejun Chen,Yan Long,Qiyou Wang,Shuandi Wang,Guozhu Chen,Hongmei Li,Junhua Hu,Junwei Fu,Min Liu

Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to obtain C2/multi-carbon fuels is an appealing technology to reduce carbon emission and store intermittent renewable electricity. The C–C coupling process, as the most critical step for generating C2/multi-carbon fuels, strongly depends on the concentration of *CO intermediates around the active sites. In this work, we prepared porous copper nanospheres (P-Cu) that greatly improved the C–C coupling process by enriching *CO intermediates in the pore structure . The specific pore features of P-Cu were characterized in detail by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption tests. Obviously, the P-Cu exhibits higher specific surface area and richer pore structure than the control sample compact copper nanosphere (C-Cu). The CO gas sensor and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) tests prove that the P-Cu has better CO adsorption and enrichment capacity than C-Cu due to the rich pore structure. As a result, P-Cu exhibited a high C2 selectivity with a Faradaic efficiency (FE C2 ) of 57.22% at −1.3 V ( vs . RHE), which is about 2.5-fold than the C-Cu (FE C2 of 22.71%). This work provides an effective strategy to improve the activity and selectivity of C2 products in CO 2 RR by optimizing the adsorption/enrichment property of intermediates.

Hexafluorophosphate-Modulated CuO for Selectivity Enhancement of C2 Species in Electroreduction of CO2

Lu Jiang,Yaning Liu,Qinghua Liu,Zhiwei Yang,Miao Ji,Haonan Chen,Xinya Chen,Furong Qiao,Xiao Huang,Gang Lu

Copper (Cu)-based catalysts are widely employed in electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ER) because of their cost-effectiveness and versatility in producing multi-carbon products. However, improving the product selectivity, especially toward C 2 species (hydrocarbon containing two carbon atoms), remains a significant challenge. Herein, the microwave-assisted synthesis of copper oxide (CuO) is modulated with ammonium hexafluorophosphate (NH 4 PF 6 ), obtaining thin CuO (ca. 12 nm in thickness) nanosheets with the surface adsorbed with hexafluorophosphate, referred as CuO-PF 6 . This CuO-PF 6 catalyst could help stabilize the key reaction intermediates during CO 2 ER. Therefore, the Faradaic efficiency (FE) of C 2 products (ethylene and ethanol) during CO 2 ER could be improved to 75.8% ± 0.5% in an H-type electrochemical cell. This C 2 FE increases to 82.4% in a flow cell. The improved FE toward C 2 species could be attributed to the PF 6 -modulated electronic structure of Cu surface and stabilization of key reaction intermediates, especially those involving C 2 production. In addition, CuO-PF 6 also demonstrates a high catalytic stability over 10 h. This work provides a deeper understanding of surface modification strategy for CO 2 ER enhancement, promising for designing hybrid electrocatalysts with high efficiency and stability for CO 2 -to-fuel conversion.

Engineering Cu+/Cu0 Interfaces With Lanthanum Doping for Efficient CO2-to-C2+ Conversion

Jinlong Wu,Haiqiang Mu,Min Zhu,Xueru Zhao,Ting Zhang,Jiaxin Bai,Jin Zhang,Feng Li,Jing Li

Copper-based catalysts offer promise for CO 2 -to-C 2+ conversion but suffer from instability of Cu + species, which are active sites critical for enabling C−C coupling. In this work, we synthesized Lanthanum (La)-doped Cu x O (La-Cu x O) catalysts with varying La/Cu ratios to investigate how the interplay between doping-induced electronic effects and grain boundary (GB)-driven stabilization affects deep CO 2 reduction to C 2+ . Combined density functional theory calculations and in situ spectroscopic characterization reveal that the unique 4f orbital configuration and strong Lewis acidity facilitate charge transfer of La, stabilizing Cu + during CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), while simultaneously inducing lattice distortion to increase GB density. This modulation preserves Cu + /Cu 0 interfaces while enhancing *CO dimerization kinetics. Furthermore, La doping boosts *CO coverage at GB-rich regions and lowers the C−C coupling barrier. The optimized La-Cu x O-2 catalyst (La/Cu = 0.224) achieves a 45.2% C 2 H 4 Faradaic efficiency (FE) and 75.4% C 2+ FE at −0.8 V RHE , with partial current densities of 87.5 and 146.7 mA cm −2 , respectively, surpassing undoped Cu x O. Remarkably, it retains more than 90% initial activity after 24 h operation, demonstrating exceptional stability. This work provides a rational strategy for stabilizing Cu + and tailoring pathways via rare-earth doping. Graphical La doping stabilizes Cu + /Cu 0 interfaces via electronic modulation and lattice distortion, enhancing grain boundary density in Cu x O catalysts for efficient CO 2 electroreduction. The optimized La-Cu x O-2 achieves 75.4% C 2+ Faradaic efficiency and 146.7 mA cm −2 partial current density at −0.8 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, suppressing hydrogen evolution and enabling scalable CO 2 -to-C 2+ conversion.
