With excellent photoelectric properties and catalytic stability, carbon nitride and its derivatives are drawing increasing interest in persulfate activation for treating emerging pollutants in wastewater. In the present work, the synthesized cobalt-doped C 3 N 5 (C 3 N 5 -Co) has well-defined surface properties and excellent performance in SMX degradation by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) with the assistance of visible light, and the removal rate can reach 99.57 % within 20 min. Moreover, the system shows superior operability over a wide pH range with promising catalytic stability and environmental suitability. Quenching experiments and EPR spectroscopic indicated that high-valent cobalt oxide (Co(IV)) species, SO 4 •- , •OH, O 2 •- , and 1 O 2 work in C 3 N 5 -Co 0.59 /PMS/SMX-vis combined system. The conversion of the oxidation product phenyl methyl sulfoxide (PMSO 2 ) > 98 % using phenyl methyl sulfoxide (PMSO) as a probe agent demonstrated that high-valent cobalt oxide (Co(IV)) species as the major active species dominated the degradation process of SMX. The Co(II) species on the surface of C3N5-Co0.59 worked as a direct driver to rapidly and efficiently activate the PMS, producing various active species involved in the degradation process, while the photo-carriers generated by visible radiation act as another contributing force to regenerate Co(II) species and activate PMS. This study presented the heterogeneous C 3 N 5 -Co 0.59 /PMS/SMX-vis system is an effective strategy for the degradation of emerging pollutants and provides a promising novel ideal for the treatment of various organic pollutants in wastewater.

Inspired by the development of single-atom catalysts (SACs), the fabrication of multimetallic SACs can be a promising technical approach for the in situ electro-Fenton (EF) process. Herein, dual-functional atomically dispersed Mo–Fe sites embedded in carbon nitride (C3N5) (i.e., MoFe/C3N5) were synthesized via a facile SiO2 template method. The atomically isolated bimetallic configuration in MoFe/C3N5 was identified by combining the microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The MoFe/C3N5 catalyst on the cathode exhibited a remarkable catalytic activity toward the three electron-dominated oxygen reduction reaction in sodium sulfate, leading to a highly effective EF reaction with a low overpotential for the removal of organic contaminants from wastewater. The new catalyst showed a superior performance over its conventional counterparts, owing to the dual functions of the dual-metal active sites. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis revealed that the dual-functional 50-MoFe/C3N5 catalyst enabled a synergistic action of the Mo–Fe dual single atomic centers, which can alter the adsorption/dissociation behavior and decrease the overall reaction barriers for effective organic oxidation during the EF process. This study not only sheds light on the controlled synthesis of atomically isolated catalyst materials but also provides deeper understanding of the structure–performance relationship of the nanocatalysts with dual active sites for the catalytic EF process. Additionally, the findings will promote the advanced catalysis for the treatment of emerging organic contaminants in water and wastewater.

A novel Zn 3 In 2 S 6 @Bi 2 Te 3 @C 3 N 5 ternary S-scheme/Type-I heterojunction is constructed. • Topological insulator Bi 2 Te 3 serves as the charge transport bridge. • The catalyst has an exceptional HER rate (42384.11 μmol g −1 h −1 ) with a 29.83% AQY. Addressing the core electrochemical bottlenecks of sluggish interfacial charge transfer and the charge separation-redox capability trade-off in photoelectrochemical water splitting, this work introduces 3D topological insulator Bi 2 Te 3 as a backscattering-free electrochemical charge transport bridge to construct a Zn 3 In 2 S 6 @Bi 2 Te 3 @C 3 N 5 ternary heterojunction with Step-scheme/Type-I synergistic charge transfer. The rationally optimized sample achieves an exceptional visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution rate of 42384.11 μmol g −1 h −1 with an apparent quantum yield of 29.83% at 420 nm, which are 1.68 and 27.43 times higher than those of pristine Zn 3 In 2 S 6 and as-synthesized C 3 N 5 , respectively. The superior performance originates from three synergistic effects: enhanced light harvesting by the multi-component system, promoted carrier separation driven by the robust built-in electric field at heterointerfaces, and improved charge transport efficiency along with optimized hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics endowed by Bi 2 Te 3 's topological properties. These advantages accelerate electron transport and suppress non-radiative recombination, providing insights for optimizing the kinetics of the HER at the electrochemical interface. Photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production offers a promising route to address the energy crisis; however, the rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers in conventional photocatalysts severely limits their efficiency. To overcome this bottleneck, we designed and constructed a novel Zn 3 In 2 S 6 @Bi 2 Te 3 @C 3 N 5 ternary heterojunction photocatalyst. In this system, Bi 2 Te 3 acts as a topological insulator and charge-transport bridge, forming a cascaded band alignment with Zn 3 In 2 S 6 and C 3 N 5 . This establishes a synergistic charge-transfer pathway that effectively promotes the spatial separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. The optimized catalyst exhibits outstanding visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution performance, achieving a remarkable HER rate of 42384.11 μmol g −1 h −1 and a high apparent quantum yield of 29.83% at 420 nm, along with excellent long-term cycling stability. The proper design of photocatalysts is essential to improving photocatalytic decomposition of water and degradation of pollutants. In this work, we used nitrogen-rich carbon nitride with high electronic properties combined with CdS-DETA to generate CdS-DETA@g-C 3 N 5 composite, and diethylenetriamine (DETA) was used to enhance the band bending to enable the excellent photocatalytic performance of the photocatalyst. The hydrogen evolution rate (14.23 mmol/(g·h)) of the CdS-DETA@g-C 3 N 5 composite is 7.1, 7.5, and 4.5 times higher than that of g-C 3 N 5 (2.03 mmol/(g·h)), 20CSCN5 (1.89 mmol/(g·h)), and CdS-DETA (3.17 mmol/(g·h)), and the OFLX degradation rate (95.6 %) is 3.4 and 1.5 times higher than that of g-C 3 N 5 and CdS-DETA, respectively. These performance enhancements result from the enhancement of energy band bending, the construction of a built-in electric field (IEF), and the retention of high redox carriers. This work provides new insights into the design of nitrogen-rich carbon nitride-based photocatalyst for efficient photocatalytic degradation and hydrogen precipitation activity.

Membrane separation technology demonstrates preeminent advantages in the field of oily wastewater treatment. However, the coexistence of oily emulsions and soluble organic pollutants in oily wastewater poses stringent challenge to the performance of membrane materials. To address this issue, this study employed an biomimetic co-deposition technique to construct a 3D hydrangea-like ZnIn 2 S 4 /C 3 N 5 heterojunction structure on the surface of poly(arylene ether nitrile)(PEN) porous support, conferring the superior permeability and photocatalytic self-cleaning capacity. The free deposition and arrangement of the 3D hydrangea-like ZnIn 2 S 4 /C 3 N 5 heterojunction effectively broke through the limitation of separation flux. Benefiting from its superhydrophilic/underwater oleophobic property, low oil adhesion, and precisely regulated water channel structure, the ZnIn 2 S 4 /C 3 N 5 @PEN composite membrane exhibited outstanding permeation performance (with a flux reaching 784–946 L m −2 h −1 ) while maintaining a stable rejection efficiency of over 99 % when treating various stable water-in-oil emulsions. The cross-linking network formed by the 3D hydrangea-like ZnIn 2 S 4 /C 3 N 5 heterojunction, sodium alginate, and dopamine effectively enhanced the structural stability and anti-fouling performance of the membrane's functional layer. Notably, the synergy between ZnIn 2 S 4 and C 3 N 5 endowed the membrane with efficient photocatalytic degradation capability for soluble organic compounds. Under visible light irradiation, the degradation rate of MeB reached as high as 95.93 % within 2 h.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) has been shown as a promising visible-light photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy (PDT) application. Nevertheless, its therapeutic efficiency is limited by the low efficiency of visible-light utilization. To overcome this issue, 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole-derived graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (g-C 3 N 5 NSs) are prepared for PDT application. The addition of nitrogen-rich triazole group into the g-C 3 N 4 motif significantly makes the light absorption of g-C 3 N 5 NSs red-shift with the band gap down to 1.95 eV, corresponding to a absorption edge at a wavelength of 636 nm. g-C 3 N 5 NSs generate superoxide anion radicals (O 2 •– ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) under the irradiation of a low-intensity white light emitting diode. Owing to the high efficiency of visible-light utilization, g-C 3 N 5 NSs show about 9.5 fold photocatalytic activity of g-C 3 N 4 NSs. In vitro anticancer studies based on the results of CCK-8 assay, Calcein-AM/PI cell-survival assay and photo-induced intracellular ROS level analysis in living HeLa cells demonstrate the potential of g-C 3 N 5 NSs as a low-toxic and biocompatible high-efficient photosensitizer for PDT.
