Herein, a composite of N -doped carbon coated phosphating cobalt hollow nanofibers (N/C@CoP-HNFs) was synthesized by electrospinning, phosphating, and carbon coating processes. When employed as multifunctional electrode materials for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) and lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, the N/C@CoP-HNFs demonstrated notable electrochemical properties. Specifically, it delivered an initial specific capacity of 420.4 mA h g −1 at a current density of 100 mA g −1 , with a sustained capacity of 190.8 mA h g −1 after 200 cycles in PIBs, and a specific capacity of 1448 mA h g −1 at a current density of 0.5C in Li-S batteries, which is considered relatively high for these types of battery technology. This good performance may due to the combination of the carbon nitrogen layer and cobalt phosphide bilayer hollow tube structure, which is conducive to telescoping the diffusion length of ions and electrons and buffer volume variation, and effectively inhibits the shuttle effect. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also used to explore the energy storage mechanism of the material. The possible adsorption sites and corresponding adsorption energy of K + were analyzed, and the advantages of the material were explored by calculating the diffusion barrier and state density. The theoretical simulations further validated the strong adsorption capability of CoP for polysulfides. This work is expected to provide new ideas for new energy storage materials.

CoP is a candidate lithiumstorage material for its high theoretical capacity. However, large volume variations during the cycling processes haunted its application. In this work, a four-step strategy was developed to synthesize N-doped carbon nanotubes wrapping CoP nanoparticles (CoP@N-CNTs). Integration of nanosized particles and hollow-doped CNTs render the as-prepared CoP@N-CNTs excellent cycling stability with a reversible charge capacity of 648 mA·h·g −1 at 0.2 C after 100 cycles. The present strategy has potential application in the synthesis of phosphide enwrapped in carbon nanotube composites which have potential application in lithium-ion storage and energy conversion.

Amorphous/crystalline heterostructures show excellent potential in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) as they can significantly facilitate surface adsorption and redox reactions. Herein, a unique amorphous Co 2 P/crystalline CoP quantum dots (Co 2 P/CoP QDs) Type-II surface heterojunction was derived from amorphous Co 3 O 4 QDs via phosphorization. The intimate contact between Co 2 P QDs and CoP QDs was conducive to charge transfer, thereby promoting surface reaction kinetics. The unique structure and properties were beneficial to providing more active sites and controlling the electronic structures thus making amorphous/crystalline composites show superior photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) production performance. Additionally, the amorphous Co 2 P QDs had a plethora of unsaturated bonds and abundant defects; the disordered structure led to increased active sites that promoted surface reaction kinetics. Due to the synergistic effect of the quantum confinement of QDs and the surface heterojunction, the charge transfer efficiency of Co 2 P/CoP QDs was extremely high, and high H 2 evolution activity and photostability were achieved. The maximum H 2 generation rate over the Co 2 P/CoP QDs composite reached 11.88 mmol h −1 g −1 with an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 3.88 % at 420 nm, which is roughly 20-times that of the pure Co 3 O 4 QDs. In addition, high photostability was realized; even the photocatalyst that stood for a week reached initial photoactivity. This work offers a novel idea for reasonably establishing amorphous/crystalline photocatalysts to achieve efficient H 2 evolution.

Transition metal-based materials have emerged as a promising catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation in pollutant removal. However, challenges such as nano-material agglomeration, high metal ion leaching, and low reactive oxygen species (ROS) yield still hinder their practical application. In this work, the CoP/NF successfully was synthesized to tune PMS activation from a radical pathway to a non-radical dominated pathway for efficient degradation of organic pollutants. The incorporation of phosphorus element modulated the cobalt-based catalyst surface charge state and induced local charge density, facilitating the catalytic activity. Consequently, at optimal conditions (catalyst = 1.5 cm 2 , PMS = 0.3 g/L), CoP/NF achieved nearly complete removal of 40 mg/L rhodamine B (RhB) within 2 min over a wide pH (3.0–9.0), and maintained a strong anti-interference capacity for NO 3 − , PO 4 2− , Cl − . Furthermore, the degradation efficiency of RhB in the CoP/NF + PMS system remained 98 % even after 5 cycles. Impressively, ROS trapping and electron spin resonance (EPR) analyses revealed that the degradation process was dominantly driven by superoxide radicals (O 2 •– ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), which served as the key mechanism for the CoP/NF + PMS system. This work provided further insights into tuning PMS activation pathway via the integration of metal phosphides growth on nickel foam for sustainable water treatment.

To achieve high activity and stability for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions through the non-precious-metal based electrocatalysts is still facing the great challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a facile strategy to prepare CoP nanoparticles (NPs) loaded on N, P dual-doped carbon (NPC) electrocatalysts with high concentration N and P dopants through a pyrolysis-deposition-phosphidation process. The great bifunctional electrocatalytic activity for both HER (the overpotential of 98 mV and 86 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in both 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1 M KOH electrolytes, respectively) and OER (the overpotential of 300 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH electrolyte) were achieved. When CoP@NPC hybrid was used as two electrodes in the 1 M KOH electrolyte system for overall water splitting, the needed cell potential for achieving the current density of 10 mA cm −2 is 1.6 V, and it also showed superior stability for HER and OER after 10 h’ test with almost negligible decay. Experimental results revealed that the P atoms in CoP were the active sites for HER and the CoP@NPC hybrid showed excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic properties due to the synergistic effects between the high catalytic activity of CoP NPs and NPC, in which the doping of N and P in carbon led to a stronger polarization between Co and P in CoP, promoting the charge transfer from Co to P in CoP, enhancing the catalytic activity of P sites and Co sites in CoP for HER and OER, respectively. Specifically, the improvements could result from the changed charge state, the increased active specific surface area, and the facilitated reaction kinetics by N, P co-doping and admixture. This work provides a high-efficient, low-cost and stable electrocatalyst for overall water splitting, and throws light on rational designing high performance electrocatalysts.

Design and synthesis of non-noble electrocatalyst with controlled structure and composition for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are significant for large-scale water electrolysis. Here, an elegant multi-step templating strategy is developed for the fabrication of vertically aligned CoP@Ni2P nanowire–nanosheet architecture on Ni foam. Cobalt–carbonate hydroxides nanowires grown on Ni foam are first synthesized as the self-template. Afterward, a layer of amorphous Ni(OH)2 nanosheets is grown on the Co-based precursors through a chemical bath process, which is then transformed into the hierarchical CoP@Ni2P nanoarrays by a co-phosphatization treatment. Owing to the synergistic effect of the compositions and the advantages of the hierarchical heterostructures, the resulting hybrid electrocatalyst with dense heterointerfaces is revealed as an excellent HER catalyst, with a low overpotential of 101 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm−2, a relatively small Tafel slope of 79 mV dec−1, and favorable long-term stability of at least 20 h in 1 M KOH.

Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction has been regarded as an ideal method to simulate photosynthesis for achieving carbon neutralization. However, poor charge transfer efficiency limits its development. Herein, an efficient Co/CoP@C catalyst was prepared with compact contact of Co and CoP layer by using MOF as precursor. At the interface of Co/CoP, the difference in functionality between the two phases may result in uneven distribution of electrons, thus forming a self-driven space-chare region. In this region, spontaneous electron transfer is guaranteed, thus facilitating the effective separation of photogenerated carriers as well as boosting the utilization of solar energy. Furthermore, the electron density of active site Co in CoP is increased and more active sites are exposed, which promotes the adsorption and activation of CO 2 molecules. Together with suitable redox potential, low energy barrier for *COOH formation and easy desorption of CO, the reduction rate of CO 2 catalyzed by Co/CoP@C is 4 times higher than that of CoP@C.

Hydrogen production via electrocatalytic water splitting has garnered significant attention, due to the growing demand for clean and renewable energy. However, achieving low overpotential and long-term stability of water splitting catalysts at high current densities remains a major challenge. Herein, a CoP@CoNi layered double hydroxide (LDH) electrode was synthesized via a two-step electrodeposition process, demonstrating oxygen evolution reaction, with an overpotential (ƞ 400 ) of 373 mV and a Tafel slope of 64.2 mV/dec. Subsequently, a superhydrophilic CoP@CoNi LDH-Pt electrode was prepared using an in situ oxidation method, with Pt clusters anchored within the CoP@CoNi LDH for the hydrogen evolution reaction, with an overpotential (ƞ 400 ) of 119 mV and a Tafel slope of 33.6 mV/dec. The CoP@CoNi LDH-Pt||CoP@CoNi LDH system achieved a cell voltage of 1.96 V at 1000 mA/cm 2 , maintaining stable performance after water electrolysis for 160 h. These remarkable outcomes stem from the fast charge transfer, improved mass transfer, and superior stability of the catalysts. Heterostructure electrodes were constructed to optimize the electrocatalytic kinetics through strong interfacial electronic interactions, while superhydrophilic electrodes were fabricated to improve the mass transfer process at a high current density. Anchoring high-activity components in catalysts prevents their detachment during water electrolysis, enhancing the structural stability of the electrodes. This study provides a new approach for large-scale preparation of efficient water electrolysis catalysts and offers significant potential for industrial hydrogen production applications.

Developing highly efficient and low-cost noble metal-free catalysts toward hydrogen evolution from water splitting is an attractive alternative strategy to solve the ever-increasing environmental contamination and energy demand. Herein, a porous CoP electrocatalyst with a concave polyhedron (CPH) structure was facilely prepared by a topological conversion strategy using Co-MOF (ZIF-67) polyhedrons as the precursor. The morphology of Co-MOFs is well inherited by the as-prepared CoP sample due to the multi-step calcination process at low temperature, which results in the formation of a porous structure. Compared with the contrastive CoP nanoparticles (NPs), the obtained porous CoP CPH electrocatalyst exhibits a remarkably enhanced electrocatalytic performance with a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of 133 mV and a superior durability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acid media. A small Tafel slope of ca. 51 mV dec−1 reveals a Volmer–Heyrovsky mechanism during the HER. This work provided a new insight to fabricate morphology-controlled transition metal phosphides with a porous structure via topological conversion, which have importantly potential applications, such as electrocatalysis, photocatalysis and sensors, thanks to their porosity and controllability.

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) serve as the most promising electrochemical processes for renewable energy. Developing multifunctional electrocatalysts with high performance for HER, OER and ORR still remains a challenge. Herein, we report a facile method to prepare P, N-co-doped porous carbon encapsulated Fe-CoP (A-Fe-CoP/CPN) electrocatalyst through freeze drying, carbonization, and KOH activation. The acquired A-Fe-CoP/CPN possesses abundant pores with large surface area, which provides sufficient defect-rich sites for HER, OER, and ORR, in alkaline or acidic electrolytes. The A-Fe-CoP/CPN shows low overpotential and good stability for HER and OER in alkaline electrolyte. Density functional theory (DFT) computations reveal that the addition of Fe greatly facilitates the rate-determining step and overall catalytic pathway for both HER and OER. A-Fe-CoP/CPN also exhibits low half-wave potential ( E 1/2 ) for ORR, which indicates an enhanced performance than that of the noble Pt/C catalyst. Zn-air battery equipped with the A-Fe-CoP/CPN catalyst exhibits a high energy density (849 mAh g −1 ) and a long-time stability at 5 mA cm −2 . This finding not only offers a facile strategy to prepare porous carbon materials with defect-rich sites, but also provides guidance for developing multifunctional electrocatalysts for wide electrochemical reactions.

Two-dimensional carbon/CoP hybrids catalysts usually exhibit extraordinary performance especially in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) application because of their unique morphology which bring unique physical and chemical properties. Although Co-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework nanoleaf (Co-ZIF-L) is quite attractive as carbon-based catalyst precursor, carbonization and phosphorization processes would normally induce Co-ZIF-L derived CoP/N-doped carbon (CoP-NC) catalyst to occur structural collapse due to the shrinkage stress and strong reducibility of PH 3 , seriously restricting the structural advantage of these catalysts. To this end, a carbon-shell confinement strategy by polydopamine (PDA) is developed to improve the structural stability of these catalysts. The precursor that Co-ZIF-L coated with PDA (Co-ZIF-L@PDA) has a more stable structure, which makes the electrocatalyst CoP-NC possess componential advantage and the merits of two-dimensional structure. The resultant CoP-NC exhibits enhanced activity and good stability for pH-universal HER. The overpotentials of CoP-NC at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 are 145 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution and 167 mV in 1 M KOH solution. Additionally, the electrocatalyst CoP-NC displays comparable activity and stability for HER in neutral media as well.

Cobalt phosphide is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to a high theoretical capacity at low potentials when reaction with lithium. While, capacity-decay upon cycling and unsatisfied rate performance limited the practical application in LIBs. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of free-standing electrode composed of CoP/P-C nanofilm and lightweight carbon cloth (denoted as PCC@CoP/P-C) as an anode material for LIBs. The facile and in situ strategy for the synthesis of PCC@CoP/P-C involves phytic acid (PA) complexed with Co 2+ and subsequent annealing treatments. Owing to the unique structural merits of CoP/P-C nanofilm and the lightweight PCC , the PCC@CoP/P-C free-standing electrode exhibits an ultrahigh specific stability capacity and nice cycle stability when direct used as anode for LIBs. This work offers an easy and environment friendly method to boost lithium performance for transition metal phosphides anode materials.
