Microbial induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) has attracted considerable attention as an environmentally friendly method for the preparation of CaCO 3 . In this paper, the microorganism producing carbonic anhydrase (CA) was selected to prepare biological CaCO 3 , and a 30 L reactor was constructed to enable batch preparation at the laboratory scale. Subsequently, the key influencing factors in the preparation process of biological CaCO 3 were studied based on enzyme activity and Michaelis-Menten equation, and the performances of biological CaCO 3 were explored through various characterization methods. Finally, the preparation mechanism of biological CaCO 3 was revealed. The results of reaction kinetics induced by CA indicated that the Michaelis constant ( K m ) during the formation of biological CaCO 3 was 4.438 mM, and the reaction rate ( V max ) when CA was saturated with substrate was 1.737 mM·h −1 . Moreover, the hydration reaction of CO 2 catalyzed by CA was the key influencing factor in the formation process of biological CaCO 3 . Various test results showed that calcite biological CaCO 3 had a porous structure with a particle size distribution of 3–8 μm, a specific surface area of 83.19 m 2 /g, and an adhesion force of 829 nN. Meanwhile, the microorganism acted as nucleation sites, promoting the nucleation and crystal growth of biological CaCO 3 . In general, this paper provides a new method and approach for the batch preparation of biological CaCO 3 , which is beneficial for advancing its preparation and application in the future

Natural biopolymer-based food packaging films have emerged as promising eco-friendly alternatives to their synthetic plastic counterparts in extending food shelf life. However, their inadequate mechanical strength and the rapid, uncontrolled burst release of active substances severely limit their practical translation. To bridge this gap, an interfacially engineered dual-functional nanoplatform was developed. Specifically, porous CaCO3 nanoparticles loaded with rosmarinic acid (Ra) were integrated into a novel sa-son seed gum (SSG)/carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) cross-linked matrix. Structural characterization via SEM, TEM, FT-IR, and XRD confirmed successful Ra encapsulation, achieving an encapsulation efficiency of 39.64 ± 0.04%─surpassing prior systems. The composite films demonstrated remarkable mechanical performance with a tensile strength of 70.56 MPa, outperforming numerous natural polymer-based packaging films. Enhanced barrier properties against water vapor, oxygen, CO2, and UV radiation were also observed in CaCO3@Ra-modified films compared to those of pristine SSG/CMCS matrices. The presence of Ra provided antibacterial and antioxidant capabilities, while the porous structure of CaCO3 facilitates a controlled and sustained release of Ra in different environments. These findings suggest that CaCO3@Ra-SC (CRSC) films may have strong potential for food packaging applications.

It is a great challenge for enhancing both strength and toughness of carbon fiber/epoxy resin (CFs/EP) composite at the same time. Generally, a long time is needed for CF surface modification for the traditional modification method. Herein, CaCO 3 nanoparticles are in situ prepared and deposited on CF surfaces rapidly and efficiently by a microwave-assisted method. Then CaCO 3 -modified CFs are introduced into EP resin, and the effect of CaCO 3 nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of CFs/EP composite is investigated. Results show that both strength and toughness of CFs/EP composites are enhanced simultaneously. CaCO 3 -modified CFs/EP composites reveal an increase of 20.3%, 25.8%, 21.4%, and 40.1% in tensile strength, bending strength, impact strength, and interlaminar shear strength, respectively, as compared to those of pristine CFs/EP composite. The strengthening and toughening mechanism is attributed to the strong mechanical interlocking interfacial action between the modified CFs and EP resin matrix. Therefore, the research extends a novel concept for fibers with unique surface morphologies in strengthening polymer composite.

Transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) represents a preferred therapeutic modality with minimal invasiveness for unresectable intermediate and advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. However, its therapeutic outcome is restricted by incomplete occlusion of the whole tumor vasculature and exacerbated tumor immunosuppression due to the lack of ideal embolic agents. Herein, procoagulant embolic microspheres with tunable sizes are prepared by loading thrombin into calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) nanoparticle-embedded gelatin microspheres (Th-CaCO 3 @gelatin MSs) via a microfluidic process. In this system, the yielded Th-CaCO 3 @gelatin MSs are capable of occluding main tumor-feeding blood vessels, while the released thrombin and Ca 2+ triggered by the acidic tumor microenvironment can synergistically promote the formation of intravascular blood clots to occlude tumor capillaries. Meanwhile, the embedded CaCO 3 nanoparticles can work as proton sponges to neutralize tumor acidity and thus effectively reverse tumor immunosuppression. Resultantly, TAE treatment with Th-CaCO 3 @gelatin MSs exhibits the most effective tumor suppression efficacy on orthotopic N1S1 HCC rat xenografts without causing obvious toxic effects. Therefore, this study highlights that our biocompatible embolic microspheres are capable of potentiating conventional TAE treatment by promoting pH-responsive tumor vascular infarction and neutralizing the acidic tumor microenvironment, with great potential in clinical translation.

At present, shells have been used to incubate Pyropia haitanensis ( P. haitanensis ) shell-boring conchocelis. To develop a more convenient substrate for P. haitanensis conchocelis cultivation, a novel P. haitanensis shell-boring conchocelis culture substrate (CaCO 3 /LPE/CA) was developed from calcite, low-density polyethylene, and calcium alginate. The mechanical properties and stability of CaCO 3 /LPE/CA, including implanting density (ID) and Yield per unit area, were tested. The results showed that the CaCO 3 /LPE/CA met practical P. haitanensis shell-boring conchocelis breeding application requirements. P. haitanensis was successfully cultured on CaCO 3 /LPE/CA, and its life cycle was observed through biomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After conchospores was succrssfully reseased from P. haitanensis conchosporangial branch, the movement and germination of conchospores were also observed. The yield of conchospores per unit area of optimized CaCO 3 /LPE/CA reached 369.6 × 10 3 conchospores/cm 2 , making it a suitable candidate for P. haitanensis shell-boring conchocelis cultivation. Overall, CaCO 3 /LPE/CA exhibits great potential as a marine bioactive material, and the process and cost of P. haitanensis culture breeding could be simplified due to its comprehensive characteristics.

The sheet-like adsorbent of the eggshell wastes was prepared by the thermal hydrolysis method. The structure of the adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscope, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope, and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. The adsorption capacity was investigated in a Pb 2+ solution. The effects of initial pH, salt concentration, contact time, and adsorbate concentration on the adsorption of lead ions were investigated in detail. The morphology of the adsorbent was sheet-like microspheres. Zinc selenide/zinc oxide could be uniformly loaded onto the eggshell waste surface, which could effectively enhance the specific surface area of the eggshell wastes. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm followed the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir–Freundlich isotherm model, respectively. The synthesized adsorbent showed a maximum lead adsorption capacity of 1,428.78 mg/g at room temperature. Ion-exchange was the main adsorption mechanism.

The full utilization of sunlight and design of high-efficient and low-cost photocatalysts with robust stability for wastewater treatment is still a challenging task. Herein, we report an economic and simple strategy to prepare a novel photocatalyst by using eggshell as template and support. Rod-like Copper sulphide (CuS) nanoparticles are uniformly coated on the surface of porous eggshell to form CaCO 3 /CuS nanocomposite. Under NIR irradiation, the nanocomposite shows a high catalytic activity for 4-nirophenol (4-NP) reduction and strong photothermal ablation behavior against bacteria. A 98% degradation rate can be completed in 15 min, superior to that in the absence of Near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. Bacterial inactivation ability is also closely related with photocatalyst concentrations and NIR power. A possible mechanism is suggested, which is attributed to the synergistic photocatalytic, photothermal, photodynamic effects. Our study indicates that waste eggshell not only can be used as an efficient support to immobilize nanoparticles, but also can act as reaction resource to provide active carbonate radicals ( CO 3 − ), which play an important role on target degradation molecules.

Cellulose acetate (CA) aerogels suffer from poor water stability and limited active sites, hindering their practical use in dye wastewater treatment. To overcome this, we developed a robust CA aerogel using a novel synergistic strategy of covalent crosslinking with polyisocyanate (PHDI) followed by in situ precipitation of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). The resulting CaCO3/CA-PHDI composite aerogel exhibits exceptional adsorption performance for Congo red, achieving a high removal efficiency of 97.8%, a maximum capacity of 191.6 mg g−1, and stable operation across a wide pH (3–11) and temperature (25–65 °C) range. The adsorption follows pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm, indicative of monolayer chemisorption. The primary mechanism is identified as coordination between Ca2+ and sulfonate groups, synergized by hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. Furthermore, the aerogel maintains over 73% removal after five regeneration cycles. This work provides a high-performance adsorbent and elucidates the organic–inorganic synergistic enhancement mechanism, offering a new design strategy for functional biomass materials in practical wastewater remediation.

Hierarchical ZnO/CaCO 3 was successfully fabricated using CaCO 3 as a template. • Low-cost hydrothermal-calcination synthesis strategy was applied. • Excellent photocatalytic degradation of RhB, MB, and TC under sunlight. • Superior cycling stability and reusability. Three-dimensional hierarchical ZnO-based nanostructures have garnered considerable attention due to their unique optoelectronic characteristics. However, their synthesis typically requires complex procedures and expensive hydrophobic surfactants. To overcome this challenge, we developed a straightforward and economical hydrothermal-calcination approach to fabricate hierarchical mesoporous ZnO/CaCO 3 nanostructures. Environmentally friendly nano CaCO 3 , synthesized via a simple precipitation method, were used as growth templates for flower-like Zn 5 (CO 3 ) 2 (OH) 6 . After calcination, a flower-like ZnO/CaCO 3 structure composed of mesoporous nanosheets was obtained. This unique architecture endowed the material with a high BET surface area and a favorable mesoporous structure, resulting in outstanding photocatalytic performance. Under simulated solar light irradiation for 90 min, the material achieved degradation rates of 99.9% for methylene blue (MB), 94.9% for tetracycline (TC), and 98.3% for rhodamine B (RhB). This study presents a low-cost strategy for synthesizing hierarchical semiconductor nanostructures with tailored interfacial composition for high-performance photocatalytic applications. At present, the problem of environmental pollution is becoming increasingly serious. It is urgent to develop efficient catalysts to solve these problems. To obtain the functional characteristics of CaCO 3 and promote its application in coatings and photo-catalysis, ZnO/CaCO 3 particles are prepared by the solution co-precipitation method under the mediate of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) through corresponding strategies. The structures and morphologies of samples are characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, and TEM, respectively. Besides that, the photo-catalytic property of the desired product is also evaluated. The results indicate that SDS helps to induce the formation of porous structure. Through co-precipitation, ZnO particles uniformly load on porous calcium carbonate. ZnO/CaCO 3 particles are endowed with low-cost property and high catalytic performance under the synergistic effect of photo-catalytic properties and absorption abilities. This work established a simple way to produce the composite catalysts with low price and high photo-catalytic activity.

Failure of surgical treatment is usually the result of bacterial colonization around the implant. This subsequently brings about various diseases such as peri-implantitis and sepsis. The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the antimicrobial properties of polydopamine adhered eggshell powder-loaded copper sulfide antimicrobial coatings. Here, we used eggshell powder-loaded copper sulfide as an antimicrobial agent to form an antimicrobial coating on the surface of titanium alloy screws using the chelating action of polydopamine. The coating showed good antibacterial effects against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria represented by Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . A series of subsequent characterizations confirmed the perfect loading of the material on the screws, and subsequent friction experiments on porcine femurs also demonstrated the good adhesion of the antimicrobial coating. Meanwhile, cytotoxicity assessment was performed by the CCK-8 method, confirming cellular biosafety. This work explores the value of eggshell-loaded CuS nanomaterial coatings in the prevention and treatment of orthopedic endothelial infections, which contributes to the translational application of novel antimicrobial materials in the clinical setting and has important social and economic value.

Integrating the processes of preparation of CaCO 3 :Eu 3+ and its surface-coating, core–shell structured CaCO 3 :Eu 3+ @SiO 2 phosphors with red emission were synthesized by the carbonation method and surface precipitation procedure using sodium silicate as silica source. The phase structure, thermal stability, morphology and luminescent property of the as-synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrum, thermal analysis, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope and photoluminescence spectra. The experimental results show that Eu 3+ ions as the luminescence center are divided into two types: one is at the surface of the CaCO 3 and the other inhabits the site of Ca 2+ . For CaCO 3 :Eu 3+ @SiO 2 phosphors, the SiO 2 layers are continuously coated on the surface of CaCO 3 :Eu 3+ and show a typical core–shell structure. After coated with SiO 2 layer, the luminous intensity and the compatibility with the rubber matrix increase greatly. Additionally, the luminous intensity increases with the increasing of Eu 3+ ions concentration in CaCO 3 core and concentration quenching occurs when Eu 3+ ions concentration exceeds 7.0 mol%, while it is 5.0 mol% for CaCO 3 :Eu 3+ phosphors. Therefore, preparation of CaCO 3 :Eu 3+ @SiO 2 phosphors can not only simplify the experimental process through integrating the preparation of CaCO 3 :Eu 3+ and SiO 2 layer, but also effectively increase the luminous intensities of CaCO 3 :Eu 3+ phosphors. The as-obtained phosphors may have potential applications in the fields of optical materials and functional polymer composite materials, such as plastics and rubbers.
