The development of electrocatalysts for efficient water splitting is a pivotal and challenging task. Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) have been known as one of the most promising candidates for the efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to their favorable intrinsic reactivity. However, structural engineering related to the gas bubbles evolution and tiny regulation of components concerned with the electronic structure remained as a significant challenge that requires further optimization. Herein, the nanoarrays (NAs) composed of ultrasmall Co2P and CoP nanoparticle-embedded N-doped carbon matrix (Co2P&CoP@N–C) are prepared and demonstrated an overpotential of 62.8 ± 4.7 mV at 10 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH. The nanoarray-structured electrocatalyst revealed the superaerophobicity and facilitates the detachment of the in situ formed hydrogen gas bubbles, ensuring abundant catalytic sites and electrode–electrolyte interface for the mass transfer process. The amount of P doping modulated the local electron density around Co and P atoms, which attains a favorable compromise to afford sufficient electrons for the electrocatalysis and inhibit the negative influence of H2 desorption. Significantly, the lowered overpotential induced by the electrocatalyst surface architecture is much stronger than that of the component content and promotes the electrocatalytic activity.

It is critical and challenging to develop high performance transition metal phosphides (TMPs) electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to address fossil energy shortages. Herein, we report the synthesis of Co2P embedded in N-doped porous carbon (Co2P@N-C) via a facile one-step strategy. The obtained catalyst exhibits a lower overpotential of 352 mV for OER at a current density of 10 mA cm−2and a small Tafel slope of 84.6 mV dec−1, with long-time reliable stability. The excellent electrocatalytic performance of Co2P@N-C can be mainly owed to the synergistic effect between the Co2P and highly conductive N-C substrate, which not only affords rich exposed active sites but also promotes faster charge transfer, thus significantly promoting OER process. This work presents a promising and industrially applicable synthetic strategy for the rational design of high performance nonnoble metal electrocatalysts with enhanced OER performance. Keywords:cobalt phosphide;N-doped porous carbon;electrocatalyst;oxygen evolution reaction

Designing an electrocatalyst for hydrogen production from water splitting that is highly efficient, stable, and free of noble metals is necessary but challenging. The phosphorus compound is considered a viable candidate for producing hydrogen from water split, but its electrocatalytic performance needs further improvement. Herein, we present an easy and straightforward method for constructing Mn-doped Co 2 P yolk-shell lychee spheres. The Co nano prisms are used as a self-sacrificing template to conduct an ion exchange reaction with manganese ions, constructing Co oxide yolk-shell spheres with Mn–Co hydroxide nano-blocks. After in-suit phosphating at low temperature, Mn-doped Co 2 P with yolk-shell structure and lychee morphology is formed. The Mn-doped Co 2 P with an optimized Mn and Co molar ratio (0.125) exhibits excellent hydrogen evolution performance in alkaline and acidic electrolyte. The overpotentials can reach 10 mA cm −2 at 98 mV and 72 mV, respectively, and the Mn–Co 2 P-0.125 catalyst has faster electron transfer efficiency and larger electrochemically active surface area. The experimental results ascertain that doping an appropriate amount of Mn significantly changes the morphology and structure, thereby affecting the exposure of active sites, and modulating the electronic structure around Co 2 P. Under the dual regulation of morphology and electronic structure, the electrocatalytic process is accelerated, enhancing its catalytic activity .

A green process to produce an efficient and inexpensive electrocatalyst toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of importance for hydrogen energy. Here, an efficient HER electrocatalyst is made by electrochemically depositing Co2P quantum dots (QDs) on MoS2-carbon cloth (Co2P QDs/MoS2-CC). Due to the MoS2 porous structure, ∼3 nm Co2P QDs uniformly deposit on MoS2. The produced unique 3D-structured Co2P QDs/MoS2-CC not only prevents an agglomeration of the active material and improves the diffusion rate of H2 but also renders large accessible surface area and hierarchical pores for high-density reaction sites and enhanced mass transport rate. Experimental results and theoretical analysis of this unique heterostructure indicate that the evolution process of hydrogen is dominated by proton adsorption, and the introduction of sufficient edge active sites can significantly promote the HER. As a consequence, the hierarchical Co2P QDs/MoS2-CC electrocatalyst affords an ultra-low overpotential (41 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm–2) that ranks the best among all reported MoS2 HER catalysts and exhibits excellent durability in 1 M KOH solutions, thus holding great promise for the practical application while shedding on fundamentals to nanoengineering an efficient electrocatalyst.

Transition-metal phosphides have been identified as effective materials for improving electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In this study, Ni2P, Co2P, and NiCoP yolk–shell structures were embedded in N- and P-doped carbon nanofibers (NPNFs) by controlling the heat-treatment procedure of the fiber precursors. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of the samples was tested. The formation process of phosphides introduced a large number of surface defects that act as active sites to improve H2 evolution. NPNF embedding composite NiCoP particles exhibited better performance compared with Ni2P–NPNFs and Co2P–NPNF samples in acidic conditions. In the case of a molar ratio Ni : Co : P of 1 : 1 : 1, NiCoP-decorated NPNFs revealed the best HER performance, which is ascribed to the loading of NiCoP composite particles, which greatly increased the specific surface area. NiCoP–NPNFs exhibited overpotentials of 183 and 280 mV at current densities of 1 mA cm−2 and 10 mA cm−2, respectively, with a Tafel slope of 94.5 mV dec−1.

The activity and durability of bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts are critical determinants for the energy efficiency and economics of fuel cells and metal–air batteries. Herein, we introduce a heterojunction–vacancy coengineering strategy that couples Ni2P/Co2P heterojunctions with phosphorus vacancies (VP) within mesoporous N,P-doped carbon nanospheres (Ni2P/Co2P-VP-NPCs). This catalyst is synthesized by converting mesoporous polydopamine nanospheres via high-temperature phosphidation and H2 reduction. The resulting structure exhibits outstanding bifunctional oxygen catalytic performance. For the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the half-wave potential (E1/2) is 0.85 V (vs RHE) with a limiting diffusion current density (jd) of 5.87 mA cm–2 and 96.67% current retention over 24 h in 0.1 M KOH. For the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), an overpotential of 277 mV (@10 mA cm–2) is achieved with 94.57% current retention over 24 h in 1.0 M KOH. In a rechargeable zinc–air battery, Ni2P/Co2P-Vp-NPCs delivers a peak power density of 141.9 mW cm–2, excellent specific capacity (797.3 mAh g–1), and high energy density (1004.6 Wh·kgZn–1), sustaining 600 h cycling at 10 mA cm–2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Ni2P/Co2P heterojunction downshifts the d-band center of Co cites, lowering the Gibbs free energy (ΔG) for the potential-determining steps (*OH → OH– in ORR and *O → *OOH in OER), while phosphorus vacancies increase charge density of adjacent Co sites, facilitating interfacial charge transfer and boosting durability. This cooperative modulation precisely tunes the local electronic structure, providing a practical route to high-performance transition-metal catalysts for rechargeable zinc–air batteries.

Developing bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts with excellent activity and durability is critical for scaling rechargeable zinc–air batteries (ZABs). Herein, we propose an integrated “etching–doping–phosphorization/carbonization” route to synthesize Ni 2 P/Co 2 P heterojunctions anchored on B,N,P co-doped carbon (Ni 2 P/Co 2 P-NPBC). Firstly, boric acid etching of the ZIF(Zn, Co, Ni) generates a bird-nest-like porous framework and simultaneously introduces boron; subsequent phosphorization/carbonization at 1000 °C yields Ni 2 P/Co 2 P nanocrystals uniformly anchored on the B, N, P co-doped carbon. It is confirmed that the carbon framework exhibits abundant defects and contains B, N, and P atoms chemically bonded to the matrix. This structure possesses a high surface area and a through-pore network, which ensure the exposure of active sites and facilitate rapid mass transport. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that boron doping markedly decreases charge density and upshifts the d-band center of Co sites in the Ni 2 P/Co 2 P heterojunction (from −1.26 to −0.87 eV), thereby raising the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) limiting potential (from 0.34 to 0.69 V) and lowering the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) theoretical overpotential (from 0.89 to 0.54 V). Benefiting from these features, Ni 2 P/Co 2 P-NPBC in alkaline media delivers an ORR half-wave potential of 0.88 V (vs. 0.85 V for 20% Pt/C) and an OER overpotential of 264 mV at 10 mA cm −2 (vs. 308 mV for RuO 2 ). A lab-fabricated ZAB achieves an open-circuit voltage of 1.586 V, a peak power density of 180.8 mW cm −2 , a specific capacity of 816.2 mAh g −1 , an energy density of 1159.0 Wh kg Zn −1 , and 600 h stable cycling.

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) are often considered as a cost-effective replacement for precious metal catalysts in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, the fibers are produced by combining coal with electrospinning technology, and then undergoing a pre-oxidation process for transforming into pre-oxidized coal-based fibers. Subsequently, CuCo-metal organic framework (CuCo-MOF) is grown on the pre-oxidized coal-based fibers using solvothermal method, and the Cu 3 P/Co 2 P/coal-based carbon fibers (Cu 3 P/Co 2 P/C-CFs) composite catalyst is successfully fabricated by phosphating at low temperature and carbonizing at high temperature. The uniformly grown nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of C-CFs enhance the electrochemically active area, while the electron transfer between Cu 3 P and Co 2 P effectively modulates the electronic structure, increasing the catalytic activity of the catalyst for HER. In addition, the flexible C-CFs not only serve as self-supporting electrode but also effectively inhibit the agglomeration of Cu 3 P/Co 2 P NPs. Remarkably, the overpotential of Cu 3 P/Co 2 P/C-CFs is 83 mV at 10 mA cm −2 current density for HER in 0.5 mol L −1 H 2 SO 4 solution. This study presents promising strategies for the high value-added utilization of coal and the synthesis of highly effective non-precious metal catalysts.

Streptococcus thermophilus, a Gram-positive (G+) bacterium featuring a teichoic acid-rich cell wall, has been employed as both a phosphorus source and template to synthesize a biomorphic Co2P-Co3O4/rGO/C composite as an efficient electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Different from the conventional method for the synthesis of phosphides, bio-derivative phosphorus vapor was emitted from the inside out, which facilitated the in situ transformation of the chemically adsorbed Co precursor on the bacteria into Co2P-Co3O4 heterogeneous nanoparticles, which featured a Co2P-rich body and Co3O4-rich surface. Besides, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was also introduced in the synthetic process to keep Co2P-Co3O4 scattered and further promote the electron transport efficiency. All the Co2P-Co3O4 nanoparticles and rGO sheets were supported on the bacteria-derived carbon substrate with submicron-spherical morphology. The as-obtained Co2P-Co3O4/rGO/C composite exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance for ORR with onset and half-wave potentials of 0.91 and 0.80 V vs. RHE, respectively. Furthermore, its long-term stability and methanol tolerance were better than those of commercial Pt/C. Thus, this work presents a new strategy of using an interior bio-phosphorus source to obtain heterojunction particles featuring a phosphide-rich body and oxide-rich surface, which may provide some insights for the construction of efficient heterogeneous electrocatalysts.

The enhancement of catalytic performance of cobalt phosphide-based catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is still challenging. In this work, the doping effect of some transition metal (M = Fe, Ni, Cu) on the electrocatalytic performance of the M–Co2P/NCNTs (NCNTs, nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes) hybrid catalysts for the HER was studied systematically. The M–Co2P/NCNTs hybrid catalysts were synthesized via a simple in situ thermal decomposition process. A series of techniques, including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, and N2 sorption were used to characterize the as-synthesized M–Co2P/NCNTs hybrid catalysts. Electrochemical measurements showed the catalytic performance according to the following order of Fe–Co2P/NCNTs > Ni–Co2P/NCNTs > Cu–Co2P/NCNTs, which can be ascribed to the difference of structure, morphology, and electronic property after doping. The doping of Fe atoms promote the growth of the [111] crystal plane, resulting in a large specific area and exposing more catalytic active sites. Meanwhile, the Feδ+ has the highest positive charge among all the M–Co2P/NCNTs hybrid catalysts after doping. All these changes can be used to contribute the highest electrocatalytic activity of the Fe–Co2P/NCNTs hybrid catalyst for HER. Furthermore, an optimal HER electrocatalytic activity was obtained by adjusting the doping ratio of Fe atoms. Our current research indicates that the doping of metal is also an important strategy to improve the electrocatalytic activity for the HER.

Cobalt phosphide has been widely used in various catalytic reactions due to its excellent catalytic activity and stability. In contrast to the conventional synthesis of Co2P nanorods using expensive and toxic trioctylphosphine (TOP), this study employs a dual-ligand strategy to prepare iron-atom-doped monodisperse Co2P nanorods. The strategy involves the use of triphenylphosphite (TPOP) as a cost-effective and relatively less toxic strong ligand, alongside hexadecylamine (HDA) as a weaker ligand. The resultant atom-doped Co2P nanorods exhibited a large aspect ratio, providing a plentiful supply of active sites for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In both alkaline and acidic electrolytes, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm–2 required overpotentials of 91 and 141 mV, respectively, with the optimal Co:Fe molar ratio of 1:0.2. The introduction of Fe atoms through doping increased the electron density at the Co atom sites, thereby enhancing H adsorption. This research offers a cost-effective and relatively low-toxicity method for the controlled fabrication of monodisperse transition-metal phosphide nanorods, enabling efficient catalytic reactions.
