Reduced graphene oxide-loaded CoFe-PBA derived multi-interface nanocomposites for efficient microwave absorption

Ma Cankun,Guo Xiaonan,Yuan Mengfei,Wang Xinrui,Du Dou,Chai Chunpeng,Zhang Youwei,Ma Huiling

Effective structural design and component optimization is critical for enhancing the performance of electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials. In this study, CoFe Prussian blue analog/graphene oxide composite (CoFe-PBA/GO) was designed by electrostatic adsorption, in situ growth and co-precipitation deposition and carbon layer-coated CoFe/reduced graphene oxide composite (CoFe@C/RGO) was synthesized via pyrolysis. The carbon layer-coated CoFe (CoFe@C) with core-shell structure is successfully integrated onto the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) surface, effectively preventing the aggregation of RGO nanosheets. The incorporation of RGO facilitates the formation of a continuous conductive network and improves conduction loss. The optimized CoFe@C/RGO-15 has a minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of − 47.88 dB at 9.42 GHz with a thickness of 2.1 mm and effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) is 3.77 GHz (11.98–15.75 GHz) at 1.6 mm. This study provides a novel approach for fabricating of an EMW-absorbing material with dielectric loss and magnetic loss, offering significant insights into low-frequency magnetic attenuation mechanisms. NiMoO4@CoFe-LDH Anode Design to Improve Oxygen Bubble Transport in Dynamic Water Electrolysis

Yan Yin,Sipu Wang,Bin Chen,Anqi Zhang,Lianqin Wang,Fuqiang Bai,Tianyou Wang,Junfeng Zhang,Zhizhao Che

Direct water electrolysis using renewable energy offers a promising approach to green hydrogen production. Fluctuations in power supply cause gas bubbles to accumulate on the electrode surface, leading to segmented plug flow that hampers electrode activity and durability. To tackle the ongoing challenges of gas bubble accumulation in electrocatalytic systems, this study presents a NiMoO 4 @CoFe-LDH composite electrode with a 3D layered hierarchical structure designed to establish an effective gas-liquid-solid triple-phase interface. This distinct heterogeneous structure features a superhydrophilic surface, which enhances the active surface area and bubble generation sites, promoting oxygen bubble release and improving charge transfer. This bubble behavior synergistically enhances the high efficiency, dynamic response, and low load adaptability of the electrolyzer by avoiding high-current mass-transfer clogging and enhancing the adaptability to dynamic operating conditions. In 1 m KOH, the catalyst achieves a 202 mV (η@10 mA cm −2 ) overpotential, with high stability of over 1000 h. The Pt/C||NiMoO 4 @CoFe-LDH anion-exchange membrane electrolyzer operates efficiently and stably under fluctuating operating conditions (1.70 V@1.0 A cm −2 , 30,000 cycles), providing a new paradigm for green hydrogen anode design in scenarios of fluctuating supply of renewable energy.

CoFe layered double hydroxides with adjustable composition and structure for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Wan Rong,Rui Dang,Yunfei Chen,Kang Huang,Jiuyang Xia,Bowei Zhang,Jianfei Liu,Meixin Li,Qigao Cao,Junsheng Wu

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are promising catalysts for water electrolysis. Many efficient LDHs have been produced by adjusting their composition and structure. Herein, by using only sodium carbonate as a precipitator, we prepared gram-scale CoFe LDHs rich in carbonate anions depending on the incomplete double hydrolysis between carbonate and metal ions under atmospheric pressure. Owing to the flexible iron valence state, the coordination environment, and electronic structure of cobalt and iron in CoFe LDHs can be modified. The catalytic performance was substantially improved for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) owing to the exposure of more metal active sites and the increase in the charge transfer rate. By adjusting the molar ratios of Co and Fe, Co1Fe1 LDH with excellent OER performance, which reached 10 mA cm−2 at an extremely low overpotential (270 mV) and a very low Tafel slope (42.7 mV dec−1), was obtained. Our work can pave the way for low cost high-performance LDHs in water electrolysis.

Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework Film Derived CoFe-N-C Nanofoams for Reliable Zn-air Batteries

Junfeng Zhang,Haotian Liu,Weikang Zhu,Bin Chen,Runfei Yue,Shuoyao Yin,Na Xie,Ran Li,Yan Yin

The design of the efficient, flexible air electrode for enhancing the Zn-air batteries (ZABs) performance is vital in developing a new portable rechargeable power supply. Emerging research indicates that non-precious metal materials have promising activity for oxygen reduction/evolution in alkaline conditions while constructing a high-performance and reliable electrode is still a big challenge at the present stage. In this work, a bimetal doped zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) film is synthesized by fast current-driven synthesis (FCDS) on a thin carbon nanotube film (CNTF). After carbonization at 950 °C, CoFe-N-C nanofoam formed on the CNTF, resulting in binder-free, flexible electrodes. It exhibits excellent activity and stability toward oxygen reduction and evolution. The CoFe-N-C/CNTF-based liquid-state ZAB shows an output power density of 294 mW cm −2 . When applied in solid-state ZAB, the flexible battery shows high power density and excellent cycling stability.

Electron redistributed vanadium anchored CoFe phosphides as effective electrocatalysts for boosting overall water splitting

Bohan An,Jipeng Dong,Hui Su,Weilong Liu,Ning Li,Yangqin Gao,Lei Ge

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) with platinum -like electronic construction are emerging as prospective options for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline conditions. Still, the robust bonding strength between TMP with the related intermediates prevents a further enhancement in its electrocatalytic activity . This paper uses V doping modification strategy to adjust the electron distribution on the surface of bimetallic phosphides and improve their HER capability. When V–CoFeP is employed as a dual functional electrocatalyst under the environment of 1 M KOH, the cathode HER performance is 53 mV (η10) and the anode oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance is 175 mV (η50). For overall water decomposition, a dual electrode alkaline battery coupled with a dual functional electrocatalyst V–CoFeP needs only 1.845 V to achieve η50 which can hold its excellent electrocatalytic capability for 25 h. Finally, DFT calculations show that formation P vacancies and V doping induces an internal electron redistribution in V–CoFeP. Therefore, this work shows new insights for synthesizing highly active and stable electrocatalysts by adjusting the TMP electronic structure to achieve overall water decomposition.

3D nanostructured Ce-doped CoFe-LDH/NF self-supported catalyst for high-performance OER

Lu Wang,Yi Liu,Xiaoheng Liu,Wei Chen

Powder electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions usually need adhesives for electrocatalytic performance tests, leading to the increase of resistance, reduction of catalyst loading, and easy stripping of the catalyst under long-time or high current operation. In this study, Ce-doped CoFe layered double hydroxides were uniformly grown on nickel foam by a one-step hydrothermal route. A nanostructured self-supported electrode Ce-CoFe-LDH/NF without adhesive was obtained directly, which has a regular nanoneedle morphology with a length of ∼1.2 μm and tip width of ∼20 nm. Adopting Ce3+ ions with a large radius to partially displace Fe3+ ions with a small radius produced lattice distortion and more defects in the host layer of CoFe-LDH, whereby possessing the great potential to enhance catalytic behaviors. Once used as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction, Ce-CoFe-LDH/NF shows an outstanding electrocatalytic performance, including an optimized overpotential of 225 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a decreased Tafel slope of 34.34 mV dec−1, and a low charge transfer impedance of 2.4 Ω in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Moreover, the overpotential of the working electrode increased by only 0.04 V after 24 hours and was maintained at a current density of 50 mA cm−2. These results demonstrate a low-cost strategy compared to using noble metal OER electrocatalysts. Thus, this study highlights a ready universal approach to fabricate high-performance supported catalysts for energy-related applications.

One-step fabrication of vanadium-doped CoFe PBA nanosheets for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Yin Huang,Yaoyao Pan,Xiaoyu Huang,Guangzheng Xu,Xiuhua Wang

Finding effective and affordable non-noble metal catalysts is one of the most important yet difficult tasks because of the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Therefore, we synthesized vanadium-doped CoFe PBA nanosheets on nickel foam in a single step to change the electronic structure with metal doping. The sheet structure facilitates charge transfer, while vanadium doping modifies the electronic structure to enhance the catalytic activity. With just a 229 mV overpotential needed in the OER reaction to reach 10 mA cm−2, the as-synthesised electrocatalyst demonstrates high electrocatalytic activity. The produced electrocatalyst can operate at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 for 12 h, and it displays outstanding stability even at a high OER current density of 100 mA cm−2 for 12 h. This study will contribute to the development of efficient and affordable non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts.

Fabrication of CoFe-MOF materials by different methods and adsorption properties for Congo red

Yi Liu,Guangyao Qiu,Yongfeng Liu,Yuzhong Niu,Rongjun Qu,Chunnuan Ji,Ying Wang,Ying Zhang,Changmei Sun

Two kinds of metal organic framework (MOF) materials with Fe family elements as bimetallic center were synthesized via two different methods of one pot flux and MOF-on-MOF, respectively. The thermal stability and pore structure of the prepared MOF materials were different from each other. The prepared MOF materials were utilized to remove Congo red from aqueous solution to test their potential use in the treatment of wastewater containing organic dyes. Parameters affecting adsorption properties like contact time, initial concentration, ionic strength and pH of Congo red solution were systematically investigated. The adsorption capacity of CoFe-MOF material can reach as high as 1935.68 mg/g for Congo red and those of MOF materials with monometallic Fe and Co were 775.19 and 628.93 mg/g, respectively, indicating CoFe-MOF exhibited more defects leading to higher adsorption efficiency. It was surprising and interesting to find that the adsorption behaviors of the CoFe-MOF materials prepared by two different methods were different from each other. The prepared MOF materials can be used as potential candidates to treat organic dyes pollution especially anionic dyes from wastewater. This study provided guiding significance in the preparation of mixed MOF materials with more defects to be used in the remediation of effluents including organic dyes.

Strengthen metal-oxygen covalency of CoFe-layered double hydroxide for efficient mild oxygen evolution

Zhong Dazhong,Li Tan,Wang Dong,Li Lina,Wang Jiancheng,Hao Genyan,Liu Guang,Zhao Qiang,Li Jinping

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for hydrogen production as well as other energy storage technologies. CoFe-layered double hydroxide (CoFe-OH) has been widely considered as one of the most efficient electrocatalysts for OER in basic aqueous solution. However, it still suffers from low activity in neutral electrolyte. This paper describes partially oxidized CoFe-OH (PO-CoFe-OH) with enhanced covalency of M-O bonds and displays enhanced OER performance under mild condition. Mechanism studies reveal the suitably enhanced M-O covalency in PO-CoFe-OH shifts the OER mechanism to lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism and also promotes the rate-limiting deprotonation, providing superior OER performance. It just requires the overpotentials of 186 and 365 mV to drive the current density densities of 1 and 10 mA·cm −2 in 0.1 M KHCO 3 aqueous solution (pH = 8.3), respectively. It provides a new process for rational design of efficient catalysts for water oxidation in mild conditions.

Chuncai Kong,Weijie Lei,Bosen Lei,Fangzhao Pu,Ge Wang,Xiaojing Zhang,Cheng Zhou,Zhimao Yang

High-performance, nonprecious metal catalysts with special morphologies and easy-to-recycle properties are essential for the treatment of environmental pollutants. Herein, CoFe nanoparticle-decorated reduced graphene oxide (RGO) catalysts were designed and successfully fabricated, and the catalyst was then used to reduce 4-nitrophenol into 4-aminophenol. Outstanding catalytic properties with a reduction rate constant of 4.613 min–1 were achieved due to the synergistic properties of the CoFe metal alloy and the high-conductivity RGO components in the catalysts. In addition, the catalyst was conveniently recovered via magnets due to its inherent magnetic properties. The facile preparation, outstanding catalytic performance, structural stability, and low material costs make the CoFe/RGO nanocatalyst a promising candidate for potential applications in catalysis.

Ultrathin and flexible biomass-derived C@CoFe nanocomposite films for efficient electromagnetic interference shielding

Jianwei Li,Yuanqing Ding,Qiang Gao,Hongming Zhang,Xinhai He,Zhonglei Ma,Bin Wang,Guangcheng Zhang

Developing ultrathin, lightweight, flexible and efficient electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials is still a long-standing issue. Herein, a series of biomass derived carbon composite films with superior EMI shielding performance are reported. The cotton derived carbon fabric wrapped with CoFe alloy nanoparticles (CCF@CoFe) was prepared by pyrolysis at temperature of 600–800 °C and subsequently encapsulated by polyimide (PI) resin to obtain the CCF@CoFe/PI films. The prepared composite films present favorable flexibility, remarkable tensile strength of ~10 MPa and exceptional EMI shielding efficiency of ~32 dB over the X-band with the thickness of 0.16 mm. In addition, the EMI shielding performance of the composite films can be adjusted by changing the CoFe loading content and pyrolysis temperature, and an EMI shielding efficiency of ~62 dB is achieved by stacking 6 layers of nanocomposite films, shielding 99.999937% of incident electromagnetic waves with thickness of only 0.98 mm. In view of excellent comprehensive properties, this ultrathin and low-cost biomass derived films are highly promising materials for EMI shielding in practical applications.

Surface reconstruction in amorphous CoFe-based hydroxides/crystalline phosphide heterostructure for accelerated saline water electrolysis

Xu Chen,Jinyu Zhao,Zhenxin Zhao,Wensheng Zhang,Xiaomin Wang

Developing electrocatalysts with high activity and robust performance for large-scale seawater electrolysis to produce hydrogen holds immense significance. Herein, a highly active bifunctional electrode composed of amorphous cobalt-iron layered double hydroxides (CoFeLDH) and crystalline nickel phosphide (Ni 2 P) (denoted as CoFeLDH@Ni 2 P), is employed to boost hydrogen production through seawater electrolysis. The strong interface coupling effectively modifies the electronic structure at active sites, thereby accelerating the catalytic reaction kinetics. Impressively, in situ Raman and post-stability analyses demonstrate a unique reconstruction behavior on the CoFeLDH@Ni 2 P electrode. Bimetal co-incorporated NiOOH (CoFe-NiOOH) and Ni(OH) 2 species are formed during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), while CoFeLDH@Ni 2 P can transform into Ni(OH) 2 species during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) process. Furthermore, the highly negatively charged surface selectively rejects Cl − ions by formed PO 4 3− , endowing CoFeLDH@Ni 2 P with excellent tolerance and promising durability in saline electrolytes. Consequently, the CoFeLDH@Ni 2 P electrode exhibits an overpotential of 106 mV for HER at 10 mA cm −2 and 308 mV for OER to achieve 100 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH solution. Additionally, the CoFeLDH@Ni 2 P (+,-) electrolyzer requires a low cell voltage of 1.56 V to deliver 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH + Seasalt. This work presents an appealing strategy for the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts with amorphous-crystalline interfaces, which reveals the source of the activity of transition-metal phosphating compounds in saline water electrolysis.
