The interface between the amorphous and crystalline phases plays a crucial role in the electrocatalytic activity of transition metal-based electrocatalysts. In the quest for advanced catalysts for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), this study introduces an a-Co/c-Ni@CP-600s catalyst synthesized through an electrodeposition approach, endowing it with both amorphous and crystalline properties. This generates highly active synergistic dual sites at the amorphous Co-crystalline Ni interface. The a-Co/c-Ni@CP catalyst exhibits excellent hydrogen evolution performance in an alkaline HER environment, with an overpotential of only 41 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm–2. In terms of stability, the catalyst exhibits outstanding long-term stability, maintaining the initial overpotential for over 200 h under a constant current and demonstrating excellent performance as a cathode of an anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer. In situ Raman experiments and advanced first principles calculations indicate that the amorphous–crystalline CoNi interface significantly enhances the adsorption of H2O and the Gibbs free energy of the HER process. Specifically, Ni serves as the active site for water dissociation, while Co acts as the active site for H* adsorption and H2 evolution. This work successfully demonstrates the synthesis of a robust carbon-based CoNi catalyst with excellent electrocatalytic properties and highlights the significant impact of the Ni–Co interface on catalytic performance.

The electrocatalytic reduction of NO2– (NO2RR) holds promise as a sustainable pathway to both promoting the development of emerging NH3 economies and allowing the closing of the NOx loop. Highly efficient electrocatalysts that could facilitate this complex six-electron transfer process are urgently desired. Herein, tremella-like CoNi-LDH intercalated by cyclic polyoxometalate (POM) anion P8W48 (P8W48/CoNi-LDH) prepared by a simple two-step hydrothermal–exfoliation assembly method is proposed as an effective electrocatalyst for NO2– to NH3 conversion. The introduction of POM with excellent redox ability tremendously increased the electrocatalytic performance of CoNi-LDH in the NO2RR process, causing P8W48/CoNi-LDH to exhibit large NH3 yield of 0.369 mmol h–1 mgcat–1 and exceptionally high Faradic efficiency of 97.0% at −1.3 V vs the Ag/AgCl reference electrode in 0.1 M phosphate buffer saline (PBS, pH = 7) containing 0.1 M NO2–. Furthermore, P8W48/CoNi-LDH demonstrated excellent durability during cyclic electrolysis. This work provides a new reference for the application of POM-based nanocomposites in the electrochemical reduction of NO2– to obtain value-added NH3.

Developing advanced nanocomposite phase change materials (PCMs) integrating zero-energy thermal management, microwave absorption, photothermal therapy and electrical signal detection can promote the leapfrog development of flexible wearable electronic devices. For this goal, we propose a multidimensional collaborative strategy combining two-dimensional (2D) MXene nanosheets with metal-organic framework-derived one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and zero-dimensional (0D) metal nanoparticles. After encapsulating paraffin wax (PW) in three-dimensional (3D) networked multidimensional MXene/CoNi–C, the resulting composite PCMs exhibit excellent thermal energy storage capacity and long-term thermally reliable stability. Benefiting from the synergistically enhanced photothermal effects of CNTs, Co/Ni nanoparticles and MXene, PW@MXene/CoNi–C can capture photons efficiently and transfer phonons quickly, yielding an ultrahigh photothermal conversion and storage efficiency of 97.5%. Additionally, PW@MXene/CoNi–C composite PCMs exhibit high microwave absorption with a minimum reflection loss of −49.3 dB at 8.03 GHz in heat-related electronic application scenarios. More attractively, the corresponding flexible phase change film can simultaneously achieve thermal management and electromagnetic shielding of electronic devices, as well as photothermal therapy and electrical signal detection for individuals. This functional integration design provides an important reference for developing advanced flexible multifunctional wearable materials and devices.

Molybdenum carbide, with its platinum-like electrical properties, has emerged as a promising alternative to precious metal catalysts. However, the inefficiency of its synthesis and limited catalytic activity have severely hindered its widespread application. In this paper, a novel heterostructure composed of Mo 2 C and CoNi alloy nanoparticles was constructed and embedded in carbon nanofibers to form Mo 2 C–CoNi @CNFs by simple electrospinning technology and pyrolysis process, which serves as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The catalyst demonstrated low overpotentials of 128 mV for HER and 306 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, together with low Tafel slope values of 74.2 mV dec −1 and 72.4 mV dec −1 respectively, along with outstanding stability over 100 h. The remarkable catalytic activity and durability are all attributed to synergistic effect of multiple components and high electrical conductivity of carbon nanofibers. This work not only advances the understanding of Mo 2 C-based catalysts, but also offers a path towards more efficient and cost-effective catalysts for energy conversion processes.

Transition metal metaphosphates and noble metal phosphides prepared under similar conditions are potential hybrid catalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting, which is of great significance for H2 production. Herein, the structure and electrocatalytic activity of different noble metal species (i.e., Rh, Pd, Ir) on CoNiP4O12 nanoarrays have been systematically studied. Due to the different formation energies of noble metal phosphides, the phosphides of Rh (RhPx) and Pd (PdPx) as well as the noble metal Ir are obtained under the same phosphorylation conditions perspectively. RhPx/CoNiP4O12 and PdPx/CoNiP4O12 exhibit much better HER activity than Ir/CoNiP4O12 due to the advantages of phosphides. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the extraordinary activity of RhPx/CoNiP4O12 originated from the strong affinity to H2O and optimal adsorption for H*. The best RhPx/CoNiP4O12 only requires a low overpotential of 30 and 234 mV to deliver 10 mA cm–2 for HER and OER, respectively, and therefore is effective for overall water splitting (requiring 1.57 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm–2). This work not only develops a novel RhPx/CoNiP4O12 electrocatalyst for overall water splitting but also provides deep insight into the formation mechanism of noble metal phosphides.

Cobalt-Nickel (CoNi) alloy particles are promising electromagnetic wave absorbers due to their strong magnetic loss and tunable morphology. To further enhance the performance, a multilayer core-shell-shell strategy was employed to construct a CoNi@SiO₂@ZnO composite. This design integrates magnetic and dielectric components to optimize impedance matching and introduce multiple interfacial polarizations. The synthesis involved a multi-step process: first, flower-like CoNi cores were synthesized via a polyol-mediated solvothermal process, whose branched architecture provides a large surface area and multiple reflection sites for enhanced microwave dissipation; then, the cores were amino-functionalized with APTES to facilitate the uniform deposition of a SiO₂ layer via a TEOS-based sol-gel process; finally, a seed-mediated method was employed. The resulting CoNi@SiO₂ particles were used as seeds, which were redispersed in an ethanol solution containing zinc ions and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and subjected to a secondary solvothermal reaction. This successfully induced the epitaxial growth of a ZnO shell, ultimately yielding the final CoNi@SiO₂@ZnO composite material. The interlayer SiO₂ shell acts as a dielectric spacer, protects the magnetic core, and creates a distinct interface with the outer ZnO shell, collectively boosting interfacial polarization loss. The synergistic effect between the magnetic CoNi core and the dielectric double shells results in superior absorption performance. With a thickness of only 2.0 mm, the composite achieves a minimum reflection loss of −31.95 dB at 14.05 GHz and an effective absorption bandwidth (RL < −10 dB) of 6.59 GHz (11.41–18.00 GHz). This work demonstrates a rational route toward lightweight, high-efficiency, broadband absorbers under low-thickness conditions.

Efficiently reducing carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to high-value organic chemicals in microbial electrosynthesis (MES) systems hinges on the electrochemical performance of electrode materials. This study increased the efficiency of CO 2 reduction to acetic and formic acids by creating a carbon felt (CF) cathode co-modified with nickel‑cobalt bimetallic oxide (NiCo 2 O 4 ) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) coupled with an enriched mixed microbial community derived from anaerobic sludge. Compared to NiCo 2 O 4 /CF and CF cathodes, the CNT-NiCo 2 O 4 /CF cathode increased acetate yield by 1.3- and 2.3-fold, and formate yield by 1.1- and 2.4-fold, respectively. Within 8 days, the system achieved 742.98 mg/L acetate and 566.37 mg/L formate. Performance gains stem from: (1) the synergistic effect of CNT and NiCo 2 O 4 , which increased electrode surface area and electron transfer efficiency; (2) enhanced hydrophilicity, which improved microbe-electrode interactions; and (3) the presence of Co/Ni ions, which boosted CF conductivity and the selective enrichment of electroactive microbes (e.g., Sporomusa and Cupidesulfovibrio ). This study provides an innovative strategy for developing high-performance MES electrode materials. Through the synergistic design of bimetallic oxides and nanocarbon materials, the conversion of CO 2 to acetic acid and formic acid was achieved, offering a feasible technical pathway toward carbon neutrality.

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a critical electrochemical reaction in water splitting. However, existing noble metal catalysts tend to aggregate and dissolve under acidic conditions, resulting in low preparation efficiency, poor catalytic activity, and stability. To address this issue, this study employed an ultrafast Joule heating (UJH) technique to rapidly synthesize a cobalt-nickel nanoalloy heterostructure supported on carbon cloth (Co-Ni@CC) and tested its performance in electrocatalytic HER under acidic conditions. The study demonstrated that the metallic heterostructure of Co and Ni nanocrystals on a conductive carbon cloth substrate exhibited excellent dispersion, significantly increasing the contact area of active sites and delivering superior electrocatalytic performance ( η 10 = 231 mV, 111.7 mV dec −1 ). With its high catalytic activity, low cost, good electrical conductivity, and chemical stability, Co-Ni@ CC represents an ideal alternative to noble metal catalysts. Furthermore, this study demonstrates the potential of the UJH technique for rapidly constructing high-performance metal heterostructures, offering a new approach for developing electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

The rapid development of flexible electronic devices has placed higher demands on the development of high-performance flexible supercapacitors. In this work, a safe and simple method was developed to prepare cobalt–nickel layered double hydroxide (CoNi-LDH) flexible electrodes. Metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived CoNi-LDH was successfully grown on the surface of polypropylene nonwoven flexible carbon fiber membranes through plasma oxidation treatment, grafting of cobalt-based MOFs, and room-temperature etching in Ni 2+ solution. The prepared flexible modified carbon fiber membrane (CPO-CoNi-40-0.5) has good mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 159.26 ± 63.03 kPa. In addition, the CPO-CoNi-40-0.5 electrode has a high specific capacitance of 580 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 . The assembled supercapacitor maintains 99% of the initial specific capacity after 7000 cycles and 98% of the initial specific capacity when it is folded at 90°, showing excellent long cycle stability and bending resistance. This paper provides a new way to promote the development of high-performance and low-cost flexible electrodes.

The development of efficient and stable bifunctional non-noble metal catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is essential for electrochemical water splitting. In this study, CoNi@C core–shell structure catalysts derived from ZIF-67 were synthesized through high-temperature calcination. The hydrophilic carbon shell inhibits the oxidation of Co and Ni and enhances the activity and stability of the water splitting reaction. CoNi serves as the active site of the reaction, while the doped nitrogen further promotes the electrocatalytic reaction. The synthesized Ni1Co10/C catalyst exhibits high bifunctional performance, with low overpotentials at 100 mA cm−2 for the OER (380 mV) and HER (357 mV), and a high double-layer capacitance (54 mF cm−2). Moreover, the Ni1Co10/C catalyst serves as an effective cathode for water splitting in a two-electrode system, demonstrating a stable cell voltage of 2.05 V and maintaining a constant catalytic current of 100 mA cm−2 over 24 hours. DFT calculation showed that the active site of the OER and HER was Co.

Surface OVs act as robust atomic anchors to capture CoNi-ZIF on BiVO 4 . • Defect anchoring drives ∼4.0 e⁻ transfer for efficient charge separation. • Built-in electric field significantly lowers the OER activation energy barrier. • The engineered interface yields 4.16 mA cm⁻ 2 with an exceptional 97.6% stability. • This heterojunction achieves dual PEC water splitting and MB degradation. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) is extensively investigated for solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) applications. However, its performance is largely limited by severe bulk charge recombination and sluggish surface reaction kinetics. In this work, a strategy combining defect engineering with in-situ self-assembly was developed to construct a planar photoanode, which integrates an oxygen-vacancy-rich BiVO 4 (OV-BVO) skeleton with a strongly coupled bimetallic CoNi-zeolitic imidazolate framework (CoNi-ZIF) cocatalyst layer. Experimental characterizations combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the introduced oxygen vacancies (OVs) play dual critical roles. In the bulk, OVs induce V 4 ⁺ polaron states, significantly enhancing intrinsic conductivity and visible-light absorption. At the interface, OVs serve as atomic anchoring sites, inducing a substantial electron transfer of ∼4.0 e and generating a strong built-in electric field (maximum photovoltage of 418.1 mV). This efficiently drives photogenerated holes into the CoNi-ZIF layer, achieving a surface hole injection efficiency exceeding 80%. Consequently, the optimized OV-BVO/CoNi-ZIF photoanode delivers a photocurrent density of 4.16 mA cm⁻ 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE (2.6 times that of Pure BVO) and maintains stable continuous operation without structural degradation. This study elucidates the defect-mediated charge transfer mechanism at the atomic scale, providing specific design strategies for advanced photoanodes in solar energy conversion.
