Catalytic oxidation is commonly employed in industry to reduce the concentration of tritium-containing radioactive gases leaked into the atmosphere, thereby protecting human health and the environment. Currently, Pt-based catalysts are considered promising candidates for the oxidative removal of tritiated gases. However, previously reported catalysts exhibit high activation barriers (≈1.0 eV) for the rate-determining step, which limits their overall efficiency. In this study, synergistic catalytic sites composed of Pt nanoclusters and atomically dispersed CoO x species are strategically constructed within silicalite-1 zeolite, enabling efficient catalytic oxidation of hydrogen isotopes under low-temperature and high space velocity conditions. This improvement is primarily attributed to the dual functionality of the CoO x unit, which not only serves as an oxygen donor but also modulates the electronic structure of adjacent Pt atoms. These effects facilitate both reaction pathways, lowering the energy barriers of their respective rate-determining steps to 0.63 and 0.92 eV, both well below 1.0 eV. The synthesized CoO x /Pt@S-1 catalyst achieves >99% conversion of H 2 and D 2 at 40 °C under a GHSV of 48,000 mL g −1 h −1 . Moreover, it demonstrates excellent stability over a 37 d intermittent restart test.

Direct ammonia fuel cells (DAFCs) operating at low temperatures represent a promising clean energy technology, generating only nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O) as byproducts. However, their widespread implementation is hindered by the kinetically sluggish six‑electron ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) at the anode. Herein, we report a rational design of oxygen‑vacancy‑rich CoOx modified Pt nanoparticles via a combined crystal facet and defect engineering strategy. Electrochemical tests demonstrate that the optimized catalyst exhibits a mass activity of 165 A g-1 Pt, which is 47% higher than that of unmodified Pt cubic nanoparticles. Combined electrochemical and in-situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analyses reveal that the enhanced performance stems primarily from the abundant oxygen vacancies within the CoOx. These vacancies facilitate the formation of adsorbed OH species (OHad), and induce strong metal support interactions (SMSI), thereby optimizing the reaction pathway and kinetics. This study provides valuable insights into the design of high performance AOR electrocatalysts through defect engineering.

Nanoreactors have been enlightened by enzymes to benefit from particular confinement for purpose of the acceleration of catalytic reactions and rendering them specific. Herein, we have first designed and synthesized the high-efficiency carbon nanotube-stabilized cobalt oxides nanoparticles (CoO x /CNT), via immobilization of CoO x nanoparticles onto carbon nanotube (CNT), for 3-aminophenol (3-AP) degradation via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Among them, carbon nanotube is used as a nanoreactor for efficient degradation of 3-AP over CoO x /CNT nanocomposite . The detailed physical characterizations illustrate that CoO x /CNT presented a nanotube-shaped structure, and some CoO x nanoparticles were encapsulated into CNT, and the molar ration of Co and O in CoO x was calculated to be 1:1.006, where CoO 1.006 might be the mixture of CoO and Co 3 O 4 . The comparison with other carriers (including MoS 2 , CeO 2 , ZnO and ZrO 2 ), CoO x /CNT provides the highest 3-AP degradation efficiency, highlighting the key role of CNT, as a nanoreactor, in CoO x /CNT for activating PMS to degrade 3-AP. The super-high catalytic activity of CoO x /CNT nanocomposite in the 3-AP degradation is owing to the specific confinement (encapsulation of some CoO x by carbon nanotubes). It seems the electron transfer from CNT to Co atom surface, enriched its surface electron cloud density, which is favorable for PMS activation. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) result have verified that SO 4 • - and OH• are the primary reactive oxygen species in 3-AP degradation over CoO x /CNT/PMS system. This study provides a new research orientation for the synthesis of efficient and stable carbon nanotube-encapsulated Co-based nanocatalyst for wastewater treatment .

Cost-effective and environmentally friendly production of biomass-derived amines under mild conditions is highly desirable but challenging. Herein, bifunctional Co@CoO x catalysts comprised of Co and CoO x were prepared by controllable precipitation-reduction and adopted for furfural (FAL) reductive amination with N 2 H 4 . The structure of Co species can be regulated gradually via tuning reduction temperature, resulting in a significant influence on reductive amination. The optimal CoO x -250 can achieve 96.4 % furfurylamine (FFA) yield at 60 °C, and even 95.8 % at 30 °C. The control experiments and DFT calculations suggest that the metal Co is responsible for H 2 dissociation and C N reduction, while the oxygen-vacant CoO x favors the hydrogen spillover and the C N bond activation, thus resulting in a collaborative effort for FAL reductive amination. The catalyst is stable and versatile for various aldehydes/ketones with amine yields around 95–99 %, showing great potential for industrial application.

MOF-derived cobalt oxides (CoO x ) have attracted extensive attentions due to their excellent theoretical specific capacitances, permanent porosity and controllable structures. However, the inherent poor conductivity of single-component cobalt oxide, and the structural collapse, pore loss and agglomeration during pyrolysis process are still the main factors to limit the performance of CoO x . Structure design of 3D hierarchical porous heterostructure composites through 0D/1D/2D materials is an effective strategy for boosting the capacitive performance of CoO x . Herein, the rationally designed 3D hierarchically porous CoO x /MWCNTs/rGO ternary hybrid composite was constructed through high-temperature pyrolysis of a facile self-assembled 0D/1D/2D Co-MOF/MWCNTs/GO precursor. Indeed, The CoO x /MWCNTs/rGO electrode exhibited an excellent specific capacitance of 520 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , outstanding rate capability of 80.77 % capacitance retention even at 20 A g −1 , and ideal durability with about 8.4 % capacitance decay after 10000 cycles. Moreover, the CoO x /MWCNTs/rGO exhibited a maximum energy density of 14.6 Wh kg −1 with a power density of 41.2 W kg −1 .

Cobalt (Co)-based zeolite catalysts are promising alternatives to replace expensive Pt- and toxic Cr-based catalysts for direct propane dehydrogenation (PDH). However, identifying the interaction between Co species and surface Si-hydroxyls of siliceous zeolites has been an inevitable challenge to realize the controllable construction of the Co species as dehydrogenation sites. Herein, we have fabricated a series of Co/Si-Beta(m-n) catalysts by using the dealuminated Si-Beta zeolites with “on-purpose” quantifying different type of Si-hydroxyls, involving geminal silanols ( g -SiOH), vicinal silanols ( v -SiOH) and silanol nests ( n -SiOH). In comparison to ultra-small CoO x nanoparticles (< 1.0 nm) directly trapped by the n -SiOH structure, a moderate interaction was built between tetrahedrally-coordinated divalent CoO x nanoparticles (∼4.5 nm) and external n -SiOH structure, resulting from partial migration and aggregation of initial CoO x species preferentially captured with g -/ v -SiOH structures during H 2 reduction. Given this, a representative Co/Si-Beta(500–12) catalyst exhibited a high catalyst productivity of 29.22 mol/g-catalyst (the product of initial reaction rate and the inverse of deactivation coefficient) with about 96 % propylene selectivity. In-situ FTIR spectra further revealed that such superior PDH performance was attributable to the moderately interaction of defined Si-O-Co structure that could be conducive to form the 2-propyl intermediate product, supporting the production of propylene and H 2 . These findings provide a novel inspiration for the development and optimization of low-cost, ecofriendly and advanced PDH catalysts.

Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a pivotal strategy for upgrading lignin-derived oxygen-rich compounds into value-added chemicals. Developing high-performance non-precious metal inorganic catalysts with precisely controllable active sites remains a core challenge in this field. Herein, we reported a facile one-pot hydrothermal-calcination reduction method to construct carbon-confined Co-CoO x dual-site catalysts (Co x @Sa y -T) using salicylic acid as a bifunctional organic ligand and in-situ carbon source. The optimized Co 5 @Sa 5 –550 catalyst exhibited outstanding performance in the transfer HDO of guaiacol to cyclohexanol, achieving 99.3% guaiacol conversion and 93.5% cyclohexanol selectivity under mild conditions (180 °C, 2 MPa N 2 , 4 h) with isopropanol as the hydrogen donor, eliminating the need for external H2. Comprehensive structural characterizations demonstrated that the superior catalytic activity originates from the synergistic effect of uniformly dispersed Co-CoO x sites. Metallic Co centers catalyzed isopropanol dehydrogenation to generate active hydrogen species, while CoO x species acted as moderate Lewis acid sites to facilitate methoxy group adsorption and C O bond cleavage. This work provided a controllable and scalable strategy for designing efficient non-precious metal inorganic catalysts for biomass valorization.

CeO2 nanorods supported Co–CoOx catalysts showed high selectivity for higher alcohol synthesis (HAS) from syngas. The selectivity has found to increase with lowering the Co loadings, and the value over Co1/CeO2 (19.86%) is twice higher than that over Co5/CeO2 (8.67%). The active sites at the interfaces between Co0 and CoOx, or to say, Co–CoOx pairs, have evidenced to be responsible for HAS. The strong metal–support interactions between Co and CeO2 retard the reduction of CoOx and stabilize the intermediates such as CO–Coδ+. Likely, CO favors dissociating on the metallic Co surface to form CHx species, while CO is associatively activated on Coδ+ sites. Moreover, the structure evolution of the Co–CoOx interface was revealed during calcination, reduction, and reaction using in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), in situ Raman spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform spectroscopy (CO-DRIFTS). The structure–performance relationship of HAS over Co/CeO2 was proposed.

The electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) offers a promising approach for producing high-value chemicals and hydrogen. While cobalt-based oxides are promising catalysts for the HMF oxidation reaction (HMFOR), their performance is limited by inefficient oxidation of CoO x to the active CoO 2 phase. Here, we demonstrate that introducing oxygen vacancies into CoO x significantly enhances its oxidation kinetics. The oxygen vacancy-rich CoO x supported on copper foam (CoO x /CF) achieves an impressive 98% HMF conversion with a Faradaic efficiency of 98.6% at 1.5 V vs. RHE. Operando Raman spectroscopy reveals that oxygen vacancies facilitate the preferential formation of γ-CoOOH over β-CoOOH during electrocatalysis, thereby promoting the generation of the active CoO 2 phase. Combining in situ infrared spectroscopy with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we unambiguously establish the reaction pathway, which proceeds via the sequence of HMF→5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA)→2-formyl-5-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA)→2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), and reveal the pivotal role of the active CoO 2 species in accelerating hydroxyl radical oxidation. This work not only provides fundamental mechanistic insights into oxygen vacancy-mediated catalyst design but also offers a novel strategy for developing high-performance transition metal oxide electrocatalysts for biomass valorization.

Preparation of highly efficient and inexpensive electrodes for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of significant importance in the development of water splitting for hydrogen production . Ternary IrO 2 -Sb 2 O 5 -SnO 2 and cobalt-based oxides have been suggested to be high stability and low cost electrocatalysts for OER in acid and basic aqueous solution, respectively. Herein, we develop a serial of Ti/CoO x -IrO 2 -Sb 2 O 5 -SnO 2 anodes by a simple thermal treatment of mixed metal chlorides on Ti substrate. It is found that the partial-substitution iridium by cobalt in Ti/Ir 0.1 Sb 0.1 Sn 0.8 O x (Ti/C 0 ISS) anode shows an improved OER activity in acid and basic solution. For a Ti/Ir 0.05 Co 0.05 Sb 0.1 Sn 0.8 O x (Ti/C 5 ISS) anode, small overpotentials of 0.438 and 0.498 V are needed under the current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 in 0.5 M KOH, respectively. These values are remarkably lower than those of Ti/C 0 ISS electrode and comparable to other nanometer metal oxides catalysts. Additionally, it exhibits a low Tafel slope of 55 mV dec −1 and displays excellent electrocatalytic durability for OER in alkaline solution under a high current density . These advantages indicate Ti/C 5 ISS is a promising anode for water oxidation under high current densities.

Ce oxide-based catalysts with different molar ratio of Co/Ce (denoted as CoCe-x, x represents the Co to Ce ratio) were examined as the catalyst of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) oxidation to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). The Co to Ce ratio, catalyst amount and reaction temperature all have remarkable effects on yield and selectivity. Complete conversion of 5-HMF with 86.3 % selectivity of FDCA has been achieved over the CoCe-0.15 catalyst at 130 °C with 0.6 MPa O 2 pressure (gauge) for 4 h. The good performance is attributed to the high specific surface area and the high oxygen vacancy concentration to promote the mobility and adsorption of oxygen species. In addition, the CoCe-0.15 catalyst is reused for five times without significant activity loss. Finally, the reaction mechanism over the CoCe-0.15 catalyst under base-free condition is discussed. 5-HMF is oxidized by the lattice oxygen via Mars-van Krevelen mechanism with the redox of Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ and Co 3+ /Co 2+ , and the lattice oxygen is replenished by adsorbing and activating O 2 molecules.
