Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) are highly promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but insufficient stability limits their application. To this end, we prepared cobalt-based nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube-supported binary sulfide heterojunction catalysts (CoS 2 /NiS@Co@NCNTs) via a two-step high-temperature pyrolysis-sulfurization method. The energy-band structure of CoS 2 matches that of NiS, a feature that enables the formation of a high-quality interface, this accelerates electron transfer and charge redistribution, and enhances reaction kinetics. In contrast, the cobalt-based NCNTs enhance electrical conductivity and improve the reaction stability of CoS 2 and NiS. As expected, the CoS 2 /NiS@Co@NCNTs had high OER catalytic activity with an overpotential of 256 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which was superior to that of commercial RuO 2 (η 10 = 293 mV). In addition, the prepared catalysts showed good stability and no significant degradation after 50 h of i-t test at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . This study provides a new strategy for achieving efficient OER in overall water splitting.

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted significant research interest due to its promising performance in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Synergistic effect between materials interface can improve the electrocatalytic properties . In this work, the WS 2 –CoS 2 heterostructure supported on carbon paper (CP) was elaborately fabricated by a three-step method. Owing to the synergistic effect, WS 2 –CoS 2 heterostructure exhibits an excellent electrocatalytic activity with a low overpotential of 245 mV at 100 mA/cm 2 and a small Tafel slope of 270 mV/dec toward HER. We demonstrate that the increased specific surface area and conductivity of the heterostructure play a key role in enhancing the overall catalytic efficiency. Moreover, the crystal lattice distortion in the heterostructure could induce charge redistribution and improve electron transfer efficiency, which may also benefit the whole HER activity.

Carbamazepine (CBZ), as a typical pharmaceutical and personal care product (PPCP), cannot be efficiently removed by the conventional drinking water and wastewater treatment process. In this work, the CoS2/Fe2+/PMS process was applied for efficient elimination of CBZ. The CBZ removal efficiency of CoS2/Fe2+/PMS was 2.5 times and 23 times higher than that of CoS2/PMS and Fe2+/PMS, respectively. The intensity of DMPO-HO• and DMPO-SO4•−followed the order of Fe2+/PMS < CoS2/PMS < CoS2/Fe2+/PMS, also suggesting the CoS2/Fe2+/PMS process has the highest oxidation activity. The effects of reaction conditions (e.g., CoS2dosage, Fe2+concentration, PMS concentration, initial CBZ concentration, pH, temperature) and water quality parameters (e.g.,SO42−,NO3−,H2PO4−,Cl−,NH4+, humic acid) on the degradation of CBZ were also studied. Response surface methodology analysis was carried out to obtain the best conditions for the removal of CBZ, which are: Fe2+= 70 µmol/L, PMS = 240 µmol/L, CoS2= 0.59 g/L. The sustainability test demonstrated that the repeated use of CoS2for 8 successive cycles resulted in little function decrease (<10%). These findings suggest that CoS2/Fe2+/PMS may be a promising method for advanced treatment of tailwater from sewage treatment plant. Keywords:cobalt disulfide;persulfate;carbamazepine;advanced oxidation process

Two-dimensional materials formed through self-assembly of transition metal sulfides (TMDs) have shown potential applications for microwave absorption. In this paper, a new and simple strategy was demonstrated to prepare CoS 2 -MoS 2 sulfides binary composites, with a heterogeneous nanoflower structure, by using a self-assembly hydrothermal reaction process. PVP is used as a surfactant to modulate the interface between CoS 2 and MoS 2 , thus enhancing interfacial polarization and creating a unique multilayer rose-like structure. Microwave absorption performance of the samples was calculated according the electromagnetic parameters measured by using the coaxial method. The samples treated under optimized conditions exhibited a reflection loss of −71.56 dB at a thickness of 3.62 mm with an effective absorption bandwidth of 2.56 GHz.

Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) are promising catalysts for water oxidation due to their unique electronic properties, but their application is limited by structural instability during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The specific mechanisms by which crystallinity variations in TMSs influence their structural evolution and catalytic performance remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate the structural evolution of CoS 2 catalysts with varying crystallinities and their effect on the OER. In-situ characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that lower crystallinity enables rapid equilibrium among surface sulfur-oxygen exchange, metal site activation, and oxygen intermediate evolution, enhancing the transformation of bulk phase into small amounts of sulfur-stabilized oxyhydroxide and improving OER performance. Conversely, moderate crystallinity leads to self-corrosion and progressive structure collapse from the exterior inward, resulting in deactivation. This work highlights the potential of crystallinity control in optimizing the electronic states and catalytic behavior of water oxidation catalysts.

Transition metal sulfides used as electrode materials are becoming increasingly attractive to researchers because of their excellent conductivity and capacitance in supercapacitors with alkaline electrolytes (KOH). However, the mechanism of self-discharge at an open circuit is still unclear. Herein, KOH electrolyte was replaced with redox electrolyte KOH + K 3 Fe(CN) 6 (PFC) to explore the self-discharge mechanism of nanosheet-like CoS 2 /CC. It was found that the CoS 2 /CC electrode in the redox electrolyte has high specific capacitance (2325.5 mF cm −2 ) at the current density of 1 mA cm −2 . Afterwards, the self-discharge mechanism and influential factors of redox electrolyte enhanced supercapacitors were investigated using open circuit potential tests and mathematical models. It is worth noting that the device voltage assembled with CoS 2 /CC electrode decreased from 1.6 V to 0.8 V after the 2680 s in the redox electrolyte, which was faster than the self-discharge time (6435 s) in the KOH electrolyte. The main reason for the rapid self-discharge phenomenon is the limited surface area of the CoS 2 /CC electrode which has a weak adsorption capacity for redox active groups, allowing charged redox active substances to be transported freely in the electrolyte. At the same time, it objectively shows that the energy stored in the device is constantly dissipating.

There are abundant water resources in nature, and hydrogen production from electrolyzed water can be one of the main ways to obtain green and sustainable energy. Traditional water electrolysis uses precious metals as catalysts, but it is difficult to apply in massive volumes due to low reserves and high prices. It is still a challenge to develop hydrogen electrocatalysts with excellent performance but low cost to further improve the efficiency of hydrogen production. This article reported a potential candidate, the Co-NiS2/CoS2(material is based on NiS2, and after Co doping, The NiS2/CoS2heterostructure is formed) heterostructures, prepared by hydrothermal method with carbon paper as the substrate. In a 0.5 M sulfuric acid solution, the hydrogen evolution reaction with Co-NiS2/CoS2as the electrode showed excellent catalytic performance. When the Co (Cobalt) doping concentration is increased to 27%, the overpotential is −133.3 mV, which is a drop of 81 mV compared with −214.3 mV when it is not doped. The heterostructure formed after doping also has good stability. After 800 CV cycles, the difference in overpotential is only 3 mV. The significant improvement of the catalytic performance can be attributed to the significant changes in the crystal structure and properties of the doped heterostructures, which provide an effective method for efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen production. Keywords:hydrogen evolution reaction;catalysts;heterostructures;transition metal dichalcogenides

Electrochemical water splitting to produce hydrogen and oxygen, as an important reaction for renewable energy storage, needs highly efficient and stable catalysts. Herein, FeS 2 /CoS 2 interface nanosheets (NSs) as efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting are reported. The thickness and interface disordered structure with rich defects of FeS 2 /CoS 2 NSs are confirmed by atomic force microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy clarifies that FeS 2 /CoS 2 NSs with sulfur vacancies, which can further increase electrocatalytic performance. Benefiting from the interface nanosheets' structure with abundant defects, the FeS 2 /CoS 2 NSs show remarkable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance with a low overpotential of 78.2 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a superior stability for 80 h in 1.0 m KOH, and an overpotential of 302 mV at 100 mA cm −2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). More importantly, the FeS 2 /CoS 2 NSs display excellent performance for overall water splitting with a voltage of 1.47 V to achieve current density of 10 mA cm −2 and maintain the activity for at least 21 h. The present work highlights the importance of engineering interface nanosheets with rich defects based on transition metal dichalcogenides for boosting the HER and OER performance.

The development of low-cost, highly active, and robust electrocatalysts for catalyzing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) holds a pivotal role in electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, a two-step method was presented to synthesize CoS 2 /CoP heterostructures grown on carbon cloth (CoS 2 /CoP/CC). The precursor Co(OH)F/CC synthesized through the hydrothermal process can be successfully converted into CoS 2 /CoP/CC catalyst via gas-phase phosphorization and sulfurization. The as-obtained CoS 2 /CoP/CC exhibited promising performances for HER and OER with low overpotentials of 90 and 334 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH, respectively. The improved electrocatalytic performance of the CoS 2 /CoP/CC can be attributed to the strong electron interactions and synergistic efforts between CoS 2 and CoP, abundant active sites of the heterostructures, and enhanced smaller charge-transfer resistance.

Flexible zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are promising power sources for wearable and portable electronics owing to their high energy density, intrinsic safety, and low cost. However, their practical application remains limited by the sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the air cathode. Here, we develop a plasma-driven one-step exsolution-sulfidation strategy to construct CoS 2 /perovskite heterostructures on Sr 1.8 Fe 0.5 Mo 0.5 CoO 6-δ (SFMC) nanofibers. During plasma treatment, Co species are exsolved from the SFMC lattice and simultaneously sulfurized, forming CoS 2 nanoparticles that are firmly anchored on the oxygen-deficient SFMC surface. Experimental results and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the SFMC/CoS 2 heterointerface induces interfacial charge redistribution, accelerates charge transfer, and lowers the free-energy barriers of OER and ORR. SFMC/CoS 2 exhibits markedly enhanced bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic activity and enables an all-solid-state flexible ZAB with a peak power density of 247.7 mW cm −2 and robust cycling stability. This work establishes plasma-driven exsolution-sulfidation as an effective strategy for constructing strongly coupled metal sulfide/perovskite heterostructures for high-performance flexible metal-air batteries. A plasma-driven one-step exsolution-sulfidation strategy constructs strongly coupled CoS 2 /perovskite heterostructures, synergistically boosting bifunctional ORR/OER kinetics for high-performance flexible zinc-air batteries. Conventional rechargeable zinc–air batteries (RZABs) are largely hindered by the sluggish reaction kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the air cathode. Therefore, the rational design of highly active bifunctional electrocatalysts is crucial for advancing performance of the energy storage system. In this study, we synthesized uniform porous LaS/CoS2 heterojunction nanorods, in which LaS was introduced into transition metal sulfide to construct abundant sulfur vacancies and well-defined heterointerfaces. This not only effectively regulated the electronic structure of the LaS/CoS2 heterojunctions but also significantly enhanced their bifunctional catalytic activity, which possessed an ORR/OER voltage gap of as low as 0.72 V. The RZAB assembled with LaS/CoS2 as an air cathode had a high peak power density of ca. 190 mW cm–2, stable open-circuit voltage of ca. 1.54 V, and remarkable specific capacity of ca. 801.7 mAh gZn–1. The RZAB device maintained stable charge–discharge cycling over 480 h with negligible performance degradation, surpassing the performance of conventional Pt/C and RuO2-based counterparts across multiple evaluation metrics. This work elucidated the synergistic effect between sulfur vacancies and heterojunction interfaces and mechanistic insight into their role in promoting electrocatalytic activity. These findings provide a promising strategy for the design of efficient and durable bifunctional catalysts for next-generation metal–air batteries.

Exploring high efficient transition-metal dichalcogenides catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is important for water-derived hydrogen fuel. Pyrite cobalt disulfide (CoS 2 ) is one of the potential HER catalysts due to its low price and inherent metallicity, but its catalytic activity is still unsatisfactory possibly attributed to the S sites with catalytic inert; hydrogen adsorption on S sites is weak extremely. Metal cation doping has been considered as one of the most available methods to modulate the electronic structure of electrocatalysts. Here, we report non-transition metal tin (Sn) doped CoS 2 nanowire arrays grown on carbon cloth (Sn-CoS 2 /CC) as available catalysts for HER. The Sn-CoS 2 /CC catalyst with optimal doping concentration not only has an enhanced over potential of 161 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , and the Tafel slope is 94 mV dec -1 , but also shows good long-term durability in 32 h of testing. Experimental results and further density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that Sn doping can improve the charge transfer ability, enhance electronic conductivity, and arouse the catalytic insert S sites with optimal hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔG H* ). This work investigates a new method to activate the inert sites in metal-compound catalysts for water splitting and beyond through non-transition metal doping.
