Mild thermal dissolution is an effective method for the clean, low-carbon conversion of lignite. However, the resulting products still contain numerous oxygen-bridged bonds and heavy molecular compounds, requiring further upgrading to serve as suitable feedstocks for fuels and chemicals. In this study, a supported Cu-Ni bimetallic catalyst was synthesized via a co-precipitation method and applied to the catalytic hydroconversion (CHC) of thermal dissolution portions from Zhaotong lignite (ZT) and lignite-related model compounds (LRMCs). Catalyst characterization revealed that metal particles were uniformly dispersed on the surface of the Cu-Ni/CoOx-CeO 2 catalyst, along with the formation of defect sites. The CoOx-CeO 2 support promoted surface oxygen vacancy formation. Furthermore, the incorporation of Ni altered the local coordination environment of Cu species through multicomponent interactions. The synergy between interfacial oxygen vacancies and Cu-Ni bimetallic sites significantly enhanced catalytic activity. Tests with LRMCs indicated that the Cu-Ni/CoOx-CeO 2 catalyst selectively cleaves C-O ether bonds under mild conditions, exhibiting both high selectivity and strong hydrogenation activity in the CHC of phenolic compounds. The catalyst also effectively promoted the CHC of macromolecular species in the soluble portion from ZT thermal dissolution, thereby converting phenolic compounds into cycloalkanol. These finding provides valuable insights for developing staged conversion routes and achieving value-added utilization of lignite.

Building core–shell structures is a valuable method of enhancing the oxidation-resistance performance of Cu nanoparticles for practical applications in the field of printed circuit boards. In this study, Cu@Ni core–shell nanoparticles are synthesized via an injection solution approach utilizing Cu seeds produced during the reactions to induce the epitaxial growth of Ni shells. The thickness of the Ni shell can be controlled by varying the Cu:Ni molar ratios in the injected precursor solution, whereas changing the injection rate of the Cu precursor solution affects the size of the Cu seeds and thus controls the eventual size of the core–shell nanoparticles. Thermogravimetric analysis reveals a superior thermal stability against oxidation for Cu@Ni core–shell nanoparticles, as compared with Cu nanoparticles. The oxidation resistance of Cu@Ni conductive films increases with an increase in the Ni:Cu ratio, while the conductivity increases with a decrease in the Ni:Cu ratio. A relatively low resistivity of 27.4 µΩ cm is achieved for Cu@Ni conductive films. The results demonstrate that coating Cu nanoparticles with Ni shells via epitaxial growth can form closed shells with smooth surfaces which are valuable for Cu nanoparticles in applications where oxidation resistance is a requirement .

A Cu/Ni–B 4 C superhydrophobic coating was fabricated on the surface of Q235 steel under different current density via electrodeposition . The distribution of electric field influenced by current density controls the growth of rough structure. Therefore, the effect of current density was measured by the morphology and wettability of coating and analyzed by Electric field distribution model. The coating surface demonstrates the most uniform and compact rough structure at a current density of 3 A/dm 2 (M C-3 ) obtaining contact angle 160 ± 2° after the surface energy reduced by stearic acid. The self-cleaning performance and mechanical stability of M C-3 coating were studied. The potentiodynamic polarization curve (PPC) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to measure the anti-corrosion and protection performance of the coatings with different morphology and contact angle. The protective performance of M C-3 coating soaked in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for different time was studied by EIS. The wetting stability of different coatings was studied by single frequency impedance spectroscopy. Then the double protective mechanism of superhydrophobic coating was described and the corresponding model was established.

A stable and highly efficient supported Cu-Ni catalysts for the conversion of ethyl levulinate (EL) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) was developed. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, TEM, TPD, TPR, and XPS. The support effect of metal oxides (Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , ZrO 2 , and TiO 2 ) revealed that Cu-Ni supported on Al 2 O 3 showed the highest activity for EL hydrogenation to ethyl 4-hydroxypentanoate (EHP) and the subsequent intramolecular esterification of EHP to GVL. EHP intramolecular esterification to GVL in the ethanol solution was a reversible reaction with an equilibrium constant of 24 at 453 K. A simplified reaction kinetic network was established. The solvent had a significant influence on the reaction equilibrium and the catalyst stability. Cu-Ni/Al 2 O 3 in n-hexane solvent gave a higher GVL yield than that in ethanol solvent, and showed better recyclability than that in toluene solvent. With optimizing the conditions, Cu-Ni/Al 2 O 3 gave 99.9% conversion and 98% selectivity to GVL with a space–time yield of 1.13 g GVL g cat -1 h −1 in n-hexane solvent with good recyclability.

In recent years, the excellent pore volume, huge specific surface area, and easy functionalizable zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), as new type of porous materials, attracted the attention of scientists. In this work, the new Co-based trimetallic Cu-Ni@ZIF-67 was synthesized using embedded the Cu-Ni precursor in ZIF-67. The structure, morphology and properties of Cu-Ni@ZIF-67 was characterized by the various analysis. The catalytic performance of Cu-Ni@ZIF-67 was investigated for tetracycline (TC) degradation and nitroarenes reduction at room temperature. The resultant catalyst was demonstrated excellent TC degradation efficiency by persulfate (PS) activation in the water during 30 min, and Cu-Ni@ZIF-67 was displayed superior catalytic activity for nitroarenes reduction in the presence of NaBH 4 . Comparing catalytic activity of Cu-Ni@ZIF-67 with Cu/ZIF-67, Ni/ZIF-67, Cu-Ni and ZIF-67 indicated higher activity of Cu-Ni@ZIF-67. Moreover, the recyclability and stability of this catalyst were surveyed.

In this study, Cu was loaded on the surface of Ni-MOF by impregnation, and significantly improved the catalytic activity on lignin and its derivatives. The characterization showed that the non-noble bimetallic catalyst owned good dispersion, rich acid sites and stable structure was successfully synthesized. The introduced Cu reduced the reduction temperature of Ni, increased the acidity of the catalyst, and thus improved the catalytic performance and product selectivity of the catalyst. Under the mild conditions (120 °C), the conversion percentage of BPE was as high as 89.6 % using isopropyl alcohol as the hydrogen source. When the reaction temperature was 260 °C, the depolymerization percentage of corn cob lignin was 81.12 %, and the yield of phenol monomer could reach 11.46 wt. %. This work may provide an effective strategy for the preparation of efficient bimetallic catalysts for lignin hydrogenolysis .

The direct synthesis of methyl acetate (MA) from methanol is an appealing and green approach, but an efficient catalyst is urgently needed. Herein, Cu-Ni bimetallic clusters, with a diameter of ∼1.2 nm, have been successfully encapsulated within BEA zeolite by an in-situ two-step encapsulation method (Cu-Ni@Beta), which significantly favors the dispersion of metals compared to the ion-exchanging (Cu/Ni@Beta) and wet impregnation approach (Cu-Ni/Beta). The as-synthesized Cu-Ni@Beta catalyst shows a MA formation rate of 1.46 mmol s −1 g (Cu+Ni) −1 , which is much higher than Cu/Ni@Beta of 0.02 mmol s −1 g (Cu+Ni) −1 and Cu-Ni/Beta of 0.12 mmol s −1 g (Cu+Ni) −1 . Characterization studies reveal that zeolite constraints could not only provide the spatial confinement for metal clusters but also induce an electronic interaction between confined Cu and Ni species in Cu-Ni@Beta. This interaction can increase and stabilize Cu + sites as well as Lewis acid sites, which are crucial for improving catalytic performance. In-situ FTIR experiments indicate that the formation of formaldehyde (CH 2 O*) is the critical step for methanol to MA, and the CH 2 O* further couples with methoxy (CH 3 O*) to form acetate species (CH 3 CHO*), which subsequently couples with CH 3 O* to produce MA.

Direct and efficient methane oxidation to methanol is an appealing route for upgrading abundant methane resources while acquiring building blocks of clean fuels and chemicals. However, owing to its highly symmetrical nature imparted chemical stability and steric hindrance, the design of multi-ångstrom (<3.0 Å) spaced active species capable of activating its first C−H bond remains a fundamental challenge. Herein, Cu−Ni dual-atom Pair is constructed using defect engineering and a stepwise deposition method over indium oxide to precisely modulate the C−H polarization with the Cu atom showing affinity to H end and Ni anchoring the C side. The optimal CuNi/InNT achieves an oxygenates (CH 3 OH and CH 3 OOH) productivity of 106 mmol g cat h −1 , surpassing reported systems. Theoretical calculations validate the dominating role of interatomic distance for methane activation. Specifically, the dual-atom orbital coupling effect in the minimally spaced Cu−Ni pair up-shifts the overall d-band center, significantly enhancing its hybridization with C/O 2p. Further modification through macroscopic reactor design boosts CH 3 OH yield to 36818.84 µmol g cat h −1 with 79.37% selectivity in a 1000 mL semi-industrial prototype. This work provides a comprehensive explanation of the Cu−Ni synergy, bridging atomic-scale catalysis with reactor design, and establishes a common design principle for binary catalysts at the electron and orbital level.

The intense exhaust plumes of the CMDB propellants can be suppressed by the containing potassium salts, but the potassium compounds increased remarkably the combustion pressure exponent of propellants, destroying the combustion plateau effects and resulting in the combustion instability of the rocket motors, so it is critical to reveal the reaction mechanisms of the potassium salts during the combustion process of propellants. In the work, the influence of three potassium hexanitro complexes, K 2 Pb[ M (NO 2 ) 6 ] ( M = Co, Cu, Ni), on the ignition and combustion properties, especially pressure exponent, of solid propellants has been investigated by using the laser ignition apparatus, burning rate instrument, combustion wave temperature, flame morphology, quenched surface, and emission spectrometer. When the hexanitro complexes replaced the β -Pb, the ignition delay time of the propellants was shorter at the low laser flux. The study on the combustion properties showed that the burning rate and pressure exponent of propellant containing K 2 Pb[Cu(NO 2 ) 6 ] was extremely close to the basic propellant ( β -Pb) due to similar temperature gradient until ~ 1942 °C. The flat combustion cross section on the flame morphology of the propellant containing K 2 Pb[Cu(NO 2 ) 6 ] was found to favor the low-pressure exponent. The carbon skeleton, metal agglomerations, and K release identified by using the quenched surface and emission spectra were closely related to the response characteristics of the combustion pressure exponent of the propellants due to the influence of different hexanitro complexes. The relationship between the burning rate of the propellants and the maximum self-heating rate of the mixtures containing the propellant energetic oxides and hexanitro complexes was also revealed, which can predict the relative burning rate for the same propellant system. More importantly, the reasons for the deterioration of the combustion pressure components due to flash suppressors were elucidated clearly from the experimental results and theoretical analysis, which involve three destroying mechanisms: (i) catalytic metals “poison,” (ii) carbon skeleton disappearance, and (iii) high thermal decomposition temperature of potassium compounds. The study also revealed the inhibition mechanism of potassium flash suppressors on the catalytic properties of catalysts during the combustion process of the CMDB propellants. Graphical abstract The influence of three potassium hexanitro complexes on the ignition and combustion properties of solid propellants have been investigated, and the reasons for the deterioration of the combustion pressure components due to flash suppressors were elucidated clearly.

Renewable-electricity-driven CO₂-to-CO electroreduction is a promising approach for sustainable carbon utilization, yet efficient CO production requires precise control of interfacial adsorption, proton-coupled electron transfer, and competing hydrogen evolution. Isolated metal centers are often constrained by linear scaling relationships, hindering the simultaneous optimization of CO₂ activation, *COOH formation, and suppression of the hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, we report an N-doped carbon catalyst derived from zeolitic imidazolate framework-8, containing neighboring Cu/Ni sites that cooperatively regulate the CO₂-to-CO pathway. Aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals atomically dispersed metal features and neighboring bright-spot configurations with a projected-separation distribution centered at approximately 2.35 Å, while localized electron energy-loss spectroscopy supports Cu/Ni coexistence within representative neighboring regions. The optimized catalyst achieves a CO Faradaic efficiency of approximately 99% at −0.70 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode, with a corresponding CO partial current density of 31.78 mA cm⁻², and maintains stable operation for 52.3 h. Post-reaction scanning transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy further indicate that the atomically dispersed metal features and metal–N coordination environments are largely preserved after long-term electrolysis. Density functional theory calculations based on a representative adjacent Cu/Ni–Nₓ model show that the free-energy change for the potential-determining *COOH formation at the Ni-centered site is 1.08 eV. Electronic-structure analyses further suggest that neighboring Cu modulates the local electronic environment of Ni, contributing to site-differentiated interfacial reactivity. This work establishes a link between neighboring Cu/Ni sites, interfacial electronic modulation, and CO₂-to-CO performance, providing an interface-engineering strategy for selective CO₂ electroreduction. The instability of rear electrodes undermines the long-term operational durability of efficient perovskite solar cells. Here, a composite electrode of copper–nickel (Cu–Ni) alloy stabilized by in situ grown bifacial graphene is designed. The alloying makes the work function of Cu suitable for regular perovskite solar cells. Cu–Ni is the ideal substrate for preparing high-quality graphene via chemical vapour deposition, which simultaneously protects the device from oxygen, water and reactions between internal components. To rivet the composite electrode with the semi-device, a thermoplastic copolymer is applied as an adhesive layer through hot pressing. The resulting devices achieve power conversion efficiencies of 24.34% and 20.76% (certified 20.86%) with aperture areas of 0.09 and 1.02 cm 2 , respectively. The devices show improved stability: 97% of their initial efficiency is retained after 1,440 hours of a damp-heat test at 85 °C with a relative humidity of 85%; 95% of their initial efficiency is retained after 5,000 hours at maximum power point tracking under continuous 1 sun illumination.

Phosphorus-containing organic–inorganic hybrid flame retardant with core–shell structure (Salen-PZN-Cu@Ni-Mof) was prepared. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that when the additive amount was only 3wt%, the introduction of Salen-PZN-Cu@Ni-Mof significantly improved the thermal stability of epoxy resin (EP) composites. The results of the cone calorimeter test showed that adding 3wt% Salen-PZN-Cu@Ni-Mof made the peak of heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR), smoke production rate (SPR) and total smoke production (TSP) of epoxy resin composites reduced by 30.4%, 10.8%, 29.5% and 6.8%, respectively. It was proved that Salen-PZN-Cu@Ni-Mof could significantly enhance the fire safety of epoxy resin composites, which was attributed to the synergetic combination of the flame retardant effect of the phosphazene structure itself, the catalyzed carbon formation of various metal ions and the porous mof materials with strong adsorption properties. Besides, it was found that the Ni-Mof could strengthen the compatibility between the flame retardant and the EP matrix effectively through the tensile test. The novel core–shell structure flame retardant Salen-PZN-Cu@Ni-Mof promised to be a functional filler that integrated features of flame retardancy and high ductility.
