A continuous in-package DBD plasma system was integrated with NaClO washing as a potential hurdle strategy for fresh green peas. • Sequential treatment achieved 2.97–4.03 log CFU/g reductions of L. monocytogenes and E. coli on green peas. • The hurdle strategy caused severe bacterial membrane damage, with E. coli showing greater susceptibility. • POD and LOX activities were significantly suppressed, offering a nonthermal alternative to blanching. • The treatment inhibited native microflora throughout storage and enhanced oxidative stability by limiting peroxidation. Green peas are highly perishable and susceptible to microbial and quality deterioration, posing challenges to microbial safety and quality preservation. This study investigated the efficacy of sequential sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) washing and continuous in-package dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma treatment for inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157: H7 on fresh green peas. Treatments were applied individually and in combination at two motor speeds of 500 r/min (48 s, CP48) and 200 r/min (120 s, CP120), which corresponded to different treatment times. For L. monocytogenes , individual treatments of CP48, CP120, and NaClO achieved reductions of 1.81, 2.21, and 1.13 log CFU/g, respectively, while combined treatments (NaClO-CP48 and NaClO-CP120) significantly enhanced inactivation to 2.97 and 3.74 log CFU/g. Similarly, E. coli reductions were 2.03, 2.81 and 1.97 log CFU/g for CP48, CP120, and NaClO, respectively, which increased to 3.95 and 4.03 log CFU/g under NaClO-CP48 and NaClO-CP120 treatments. This enhanced efficacy of NaClO-CP combined treatment is attributed to severe disruption of cell membrane integrity, evidenced by a decreased proportion of membrane-intact cells (F G /F R ratio reduced from 0.80 to 0.92 to 0.25–0.44), with E. coli exhibiting greater susceptibility than L. monocytogenes . In addition, combined treatments effectively suppressed native aerobic bacteria (>2 log reduction) and molds and yeasts (>1.9 log reduction), maintaining microbial levels below 2.5 log CFU/g throughout 7-day refrigerated storage. Reductions in firmness and ascorbic acid were observed under combined treatments. Total color difference (ΔE) increased slightly but remained below visual perception thresholds (ΔE < 5). Combined treatments resulted in greater inhibition of peroxidase and lipoxygenase activities compared to individual treatments, with reductions of >50% relative to the control after 7 days of storage, contributing to improved oxidative stability. These findings demonstrate that the sequential NaClO and in-package DBD plasma hurdle strategy effectively enhances microbial safety and enzymatic stability of fresh green peas, with acceptable quality trade-offs. DBD plasma enables catechin grafting on CAX without disrupting its skeleton. • ECG shows the highest grafting yield among four catechin monomers. • ECG moieties mainly anchor to the inner xylan backbone of CAX. • Catechin grafting partly restores plasma-condensed CAX chain expansion. • Catechin grafting shifts CAX sheets into porous fibrous networks. A green, non-thermal dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma protocol was established to covalently graft four structurally distinct catechin monomers, epicatechin, epicatechin gallate (ECG), epigallocatechin, and epigallocatechin gallate, onto corn bran arabinoxylan (CAX). Among the synthesized conjugates, ECG-CAX showed the highest grafting yield (72.66 mg/g). Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy analyses verified phenolic incorporation while preserving the primary polysaccharide skeleton. Two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D-NMR), supported by gradient acid hydrolysis, indicated a free-radical-mediated, heterogeneous multi-site conjugation network, with the B- and D-rings of ECG predominantly anchored to the inner xylan backbone. Plasma treatment contracted native CAX from flexible random coils into compact coil conformations, whereas phenolic grafting partially reversed this transition by introducing steric hindrance and promoting chain re-expansion into semiflexible coils. This conformational evolution reduced apparent viscosity and shifted the micromorphology from lamellar sheets to interconnected porous fibrous networks, providing mechanistic insight into plasma-mediated polysaccharide–polyphenol conjugation. This study proposes a novel approach for synergistically degrading sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) combined with TiO₂/CeO₂ photocatalysis. By introducing UV-responsive TiO₂, the photocatalytic activity of the catalyst was significantly enhanced, thereby improving the overall degradation performance for SF 6 . Under the conditions of a Ti/Ce molar ratio of 0.05:0.95 and an input power of 60 W, a degradation efficiency (DRE) of 99.99% was achieved when degrading 2% SF₆. Compared with pure CeO 2 (with a DRE of 92.44%), the DRE has increased by 7.55%, and the selectivity of SO 2 in the product has also significantly improved, indicating that the doping of TiO 2 promotes the more complete degradation of SF 6 . Compared to using DBD alone, the DRE increased by 4.7 times, and the energy yield (EY) increased by 12.78 g/kWh. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the TiO₂/CeO₂ composite catalyst enhances the surface adsorption capacity for SF 6 molecules. Mechanistic analysis further revealed that the UV light generated by DBD excites TiO₂/CeO₂ to produce photogenerated electron-hole pairs, while the high-energy electrons in the plasma region effectively suppress carrier recombination. This study confirms the significant potential of the DBD-photocatalysis synergistic system for treating highly stable SF 6 .

DBD/Fe(II)/PAA couples radical oxidation with in situ Fe(III) coagulation. • Plasma-driven Fe cycling sustains PAA activation and reduces pH sensitivity. • Pretreatment increased normalized NF flux by 125% and lowered R ir by 76%. • Humic-like fluorescence fell by ~90%, with complete micropollutant removal. • NF reduced total DBPs by 92% and additive cytotoxicity by 90%. Nanofiltration (NF) can polish landfill leachate but is constrained by rapid fouling by humic macromolecules and colloids. Here, we developed a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)/Fe(II)/peracetic acid (PAA) pretreatment that couples radical oxidation with in situ coagulation to simultaneously transform macromolecular foulants and mitigate NF fouling. Mechanistic analyses revealed that DBD facilitates Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox transformation during PAA activation, while Fe(II) serves as the catalytic center for PAA activation and the precursor for in-situ Fe(III) flocs. This dynamic generates a suite of reactive species in which hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) dominate oxidation, supplemented by organic radicals (CH 3 C( O )O • , CH 3 C( O )OO • ) and high-valent Fe(IV) = O. Oxidation reduced humic-like fluorescence by approximately 90% and removed 90–95% of three model micropollutants. Concurrently, Fe(III) generated during PAA activation aggregated oxidized organics and colloids into larger, less negatively charged flocs. This coupled transformation increased normalized NF flux by 125% and decreased irreversible resistance by 76% relative to untreated leachate. The process remained effective at pH 11 because PAA decomposition and plasma chemistry acidified the reaction medium. Subsequent NF removed 92% of chlorinated disinfection byproducts and reduced additive cytotoxicity by 90%. Economic assessment indicates an operating cost of 5.76 USD ton −1 and a carbon footprint of 0.59 kg CO 2 -eq m −3 . Unlike conventional treatments, the DBD/Fe(II)/PAA process enables plasma-assisted Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox regeneration, coupling enhanced PAA activation with in situ iron coagulation to transform and remove refractory foulants for NF fouling mitigation. This work demonstrates a cost-effective and mechanistically robust pretreatment strategy for improving NF-based landfill leachate treatment. Palladium-loaded ZnO (Pd/ZnO) catalyst was synthesized by co-precipitation method and evaluated for plasma-catalytic reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction. A CO 2 conversion of 32.5 % was achieved on “Pd/ZnO + Plasma”, and was around two times higher than that of “ZnO + Plasma” (17.3 %). Catalyst characterization by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, temperature-programmed reduction and quasi in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed the possible formation of ZnO x @PdZn (ZnO x decorated PdZn alloy) at the interface of Pd active phase and ZnO support. The role of ZnO x @PdZn in plasma-catalytic CO 2 conversion was systematically investigated by plasma-excited CO 2 temperature-programmed desorption and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It was found that ZnO x @PdZn at Pd-ZnO interface improved significantly plasma-catalytic CO 2 conversion by promoting the production of bidentate carbonate and bidentate formate species. In situ Raman spectroscopy studies proved that the ZnO x @PdZn remained largely intact during the RWGS process. Our in situ spectroscopic findings thus unveil that the ZnO x @PdZn at Pd-ZnO interface favors the activation of CO 2 , and, consequently, leads to a higher plasma-catalytic performance for CO 2 conversion.

In this work, a novel coupled-oxidation tubular reactor (COTR)/non-thermal dielectric barrier discharge (NTP-DBD) catalytic plasma in a synergistic electro-catalysis system was investigated for odorous mercaptans decomposition. In order to enhance the degradation efficiency of electro-oxidation, a novel enhanced Ti/PbO 2 electro-catalytic tubular reactor prepared by using flow dynamic electrodeposition was designed and applied as pretreatment process for CH 3 SNa wastewater. The results indicated that the optimal condition was 7 mA cm −2 of current density, 10 g L −1 of initial concentration of CH 3 SNa, 9.0 of pH and 5.0 g L −1 of electrolyte concentration. Addition of Fe 2+ and H 2 O 2 and mechanism of COTR system were first put forward. The target species CH 3 SNa were removed over 90% by this process. In order to treat the CH 3 SH effusion which was co-produced with CH 3 SNa aqueous solution, the technology of NTP-DBD catalytic plasma reactor followed by a chemical absorption has been developed. MSH could be removed over 95% under the condition of 2 s of residence time, 15 kV of output voltage with oxygen concentration of 9%. Moreover, the synthetic Ni-doped AC catalyst had the best performance under 0.7 mmol g −1 of nickel loading. The conclusion was the energetic electrons generated in the DBD reactor played a key role on the removal of MSH, and the major decomposition products of MSH were detected as CH 3 SSCH 3 , SO 2 and NO 2 . Moreover, the gaseous products in the plasma exhaust could be absorbed and fixed by the subsequent aqueous NaOH solution.

High-voltage electrical equipment operating in humid environments is prone to accelerated aging of insulating barriers and an increased risk of flashover, which threatens operational reliability. This study proposes an in-situ plasma-based protection strategy to achieve uniform hydrophobic surface modification of large-area insulating barriers. A large-area dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) surface modification device incorporating water–tungsten wire mesh electrodes was developed to homogeneous plasma and enable visual observation and distributed diagnostics. By systematically optimizing the applied voltage and argon (Ar) gas flow rate, homogeneous plasma discharge was achieved under optimal conditions of 12 kV and 1 L/min Ar flow, as verified through grayscale image analysis and spatially resolved optical emission spectroscopy. Using a nanosecond pulsed power supply at atmospheric pressure with hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) as the precursor, a uniform hydrophobic coating was deposited on an epoxy resin (EP) laminate after 20 min of plasma treatment. The average water contact angle increased to 130.2 ± 3.9°, representing a 74.7% improvement compared with the original surface. Mechanistic analysis reveals that the observed enhancement in hydrophobicity results from the synergistic effects of increased surface roughness and the deposition of a dense silicon-containing coating. The combination of visual inspection and distributed diagnostic techniques has been demonstrated to be effective in ensuring uniform large-area treatment during the process.

In this study, a water falling film dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor was used to degrade trans-ferulic acid (FA) in water. The results show that 98.4% of FA was degraded by 10 min treatment with the discharge voltage of 19 kV. The reactor displayed an excellent energy efficiency, which could reach to 13.4 g/kWh for FA degradation. Degradation characteristics of the water falling film DBD for FA was studied by single factor experiments and response surface methodology. The optimal operating condition and a quadratic polynomial equation for predicting FA degradation efficiency were obtained by the response surface model. The reactive species analysis unveils that the peroxone reaction between H 2 O 2 and O 3 generated by DBD could promote the formation of OH, causing a synergistic effect for FA degradation. Hydrated electron (e aq − ) converted into H in FA solution. In the present reaction system, H preferred to react with FA rather than merge with OH, and H showed a well ability to degrade FA. FA solution toxicity was weakened after DBD treatment.

The main aim of the current investigation was to contemplate the impact of high-voltage electric field cold plasma (HVCP) on different quality characteristics (enzymes, microbial activities, coloring pigments, ascorbic acid, polyphenolic compounds, °Brix, acidity, and color index) of carrot juice in correlation with thermal processing. A carrot juice (250 mL) sample sealed in pre-sterilized food-grade bottles, which placed between two dielectric quartz plates for HVCP treatment. The gap between the plates was 30 mm, and a stable and uniform plasma dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) generated for 3 and 4 min at 60, 70, and 80 kV. Air was used as a working gas during the DBD-based plasma treatment. The observed rise in temperature was 2–5 °C during the HVCP treatment. A water bath was used to carry out thermal treatment (100 °C for 5 min). The maximum inactivation of enzymes and microorganisms was achieved with thermal treatment and then with HVCP treatment at 70 kV for 4 min. However, maximum retention of coloring compounds, ascorbic acid, total phenols, flavonoids, and tannins was found following HVCP (70 kV for 4 min) treatment compared to thermal treatment. The °Brix, pH, and acidity remained unchanged irrespective of treatments. These findings suggest that HVCP treatment at 70 kV for 4 min may be a good alternative to thermal treatment, and it may successfully be applied in carrot juice production, resulting in reduced enzymes, lower microbial activity, and improved bioactive compounds. The prospects of overcoming the existing conventional physical and chemical methods for sterilization make it a novel and more economical technique to maintain food’s natural nourishment, composition, appearance, structure, and freshness.

Atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) is a novel nonthermal technology with potential applications in maintaining and improving food quality. The effect of ACP on the activity and structure of mushroom ( Agaricus bisporus ) polyphenol oxidase (PPO) was evaluated. Results demonstrated that the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) based plasma technology could inactivate PPO (up to 69%) at 50 kV with the increased concentrations of H 2 O 2 and NO x . An obvious enhancement of surface hydrophobicity was observed, whereas a gradual reduction of total sulfhydryl content was recorded with the increasing exposure time. Data from circular dichroism, atomic force microscopy, particle size distribution and fluorescence spectra displayed the rearrangement of secondary structure and disruption of the tertiary structure. Red shifts of fluorescence spectra showed positive correlations with the inactivation rate of PPO. Therefore, ACP treatment could be served as an alternative approach to inactivate undesirable enzymes to minimize the loss of food nutrition and quality.

Plasma-catalytic CO2 hydrogenation is a complex chemical process combining plasma-assisted gas-phase and surface reactions. Herein, we investigated CO2 hydrogenation over Pd/ZnO and ZnO in a tubular dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor at ambient pressure. Compared to the CO2 hydrogenation using Plasma Only or Plasma + ZnO, placing Pd/ZnO in the DBD almost doubled the conversion of CO2 (36.7%) and CO yield (35.5%). The reaction pathways in the plasma-enhanced catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 were investigated by in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy using a novel integrated in situ DBD/FTIR gas cell reactor, combined with online mass spectrometry (MS) analysis, kinetic analysis, and emission spectroscopic measurements. In plasma CO2 hydrogenation over Pd/ZnO, the hydrogenation of adsorbed surface CO2 on Pd/ZnO is the dominant reaction route for the enhanced CO2 conversion, which can be ascribed to the generation of a ZnOx overlay as a result of the strong metal–support interactions (SMSI) at the Pd–ZnO interface and the presence of abundant H species at the surface of Pd/ZnO; however, this important surface reaction can be limited in the Plasma + ZnO system due to a lack of active H species present on the ZnO surface and the absence of the SMSI. Instead, CO2 splitting to CO, both in the plasma gas phase and on the surface of ZnO, is believed to make an important contribution to the conversion of CO2 in the Plasma + ZnO system.

Plasma catalytic CO 2 hydrogenation has emerged as a promising approach for converting CO 2 into valuable chemicals such as CO, offering a potential solution to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, we investigate the synergistic effect between plasma and a Cu/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene catalyst for CO 2 hydrogenation via the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. Our findings reveal a significant enhancement in CO 2 conversion (33.1%) and CO yield (31.9%) when using the Cu/Ti 3 C 2 T x catalyst compared to plasma alone or with a Ti 3 C 2 T x foam. Plasma treatment creates unsaturated Ti sites on the Ti 3 C 2 T x surface, dramatically improving CO 2 adsorption and activation, while Cu nanoparticles significantly enhances the activation and dissociation of H 2 molecules on the catalyst surface. These surface adsorbed hydrogen species readily hydrogenate adsorbed CO 2 molecules through the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. Furthermore, these surface hydrogen species can also participate in the conversion of gas-phase CO 2 molecules through the Eley-Rideal pathway. This work sheds light on the synergistic plasma catalytic mechanism and provide insights for optimizing CO 2 hydrogenation processes using MXene catalysts.
