Al 2 O 3 : Er 3+ /Yb 3+ transparent ceramics codoped with Zn 2+ ions with intense upconversion and near infrared emission were prepared by conventional solid-state reaction and vacuum and hot isostatic pressing sintering. The effects of Zn 2+ incorporation to the structure, transparent, upconversion and NIR luminescence were discussed in detail. The as prepared Al 2 O 3 ceramics exhibited a total transmittance of ~ 75% in infrared regions (800–3300 nm) and ~ 50% in visible regions (500–800 nm). Under the excitation of a 980 nm laser diode , the as prepared Al 2 O 3 ceramics displayed two tense upconversion emission peaks of a green one centered at 550 nm and a red one centered at 660 nm and a tense near infrared emission peak centered at 1.532 µm, characteristic of Er 3+ emission. Compared with Er 3+ /Yb 3+ doped only, Zn 2+ codoped Al 2 O 3 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ transparent ceramics showed higher upconversion and near infrared emission of ~ 11 times and ~ 4 times, respectively. The enhancement mechanism due to incorporation of Zn 2+ ions was also discussed in detail.

Trivalent Er 3+ -doped La 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 upconversion phosphors with intense green emmision were synthesized at 800 °C by the solid-state reaction route, promoting the development of novel optical thermometry. The color emitted from the samples was minorly affected by the excitation power and doping concentration. Yb 3+ is a better sensitizer for the La 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 : Er 3+ phosphor and it can enhance the emission intensity when a certain amount is co-doping in the system. The up-conversion luminescent mechanism was investigated using the pump power-dependent UC emission spectra. Alkali metal doping increased the up-conversion emission intensities drastically, and Li + ions can enhance the luminous intensity by more than 20 times. The fluorescence intensity ratio of the transition emission 2 H 11/2 - 4 I 15/2 and 4 S 3/2 - 4 I 15/2 was used to study upconversion optical temperature sensing. The sensitivity changes from doping with diverse alkali metal ions and their effects on the optimal temperature range are discussed in detail. Alkali metal ions doping extended the temperature range, indicating that this phosphor is a potential candidate for temperature-sensing probes.

The various applications of luminescence materials were generally based on the effective modulation of luminescence spectra. However, the research on reversible spectral regulation of up-conversion (UC) luminescence materials was still in its infancy stage. In this work, a class of smart phosphor, Er 3+ and Yb 3+ -codoped SrBi 8 Ti 7 O 27 (SBYT: xEr 3+ ) intergrowth bismuth layer-structured ferroelectric , possessing fast sensitivity to visible light irradiation, was reported based on visible light driven photochromic effect. Through the alternate stimuli of light irradiation and heating treatment, the reversible regulation of UC luminescence was achieved accompanying with the switching of coloration and decoloration processes. The luminescence modulation degree tightly relied on the irradiation time and thermal treatment modes. The reversibility and stability properties were also revealed. Moreover, it is found that polarization treatment was an effective approach which can be adopted to improve the UC luminescence contrast. The maximum luminescence modulation ability of SBYT: xEr 3+ reached up to 81.3% which was 131% of that un-polarized sample. It is believed that SBYT: xEr 3+ ceramics can act as a promising candidate for optical data storage and anti-counterfeiting applications.

By using the molten salt synthesis with B 2 O 3 flux and adjusting the doping concentration of Y 3+ , the intergrowth of the YTa 7 O 19 phase in L-Ta 2 O 5 is achieved. This structure enhances the pure green upconversion luminescence (UCL) intensity, which is because the YTa 7 O 19 phase isolates the distribution of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ in the 2D layer, localizing the energy transfer from Yb 3+ to Er 3+ and reducing the loss during the energy transfer process. By adjusting the concentration of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ and the holding temperature, the green UCL integral intensity of the optimal sample is 1.09 times that of β-NaYF 4 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ . The intergrowth of the YTa 7 O 19 phase in L-Ta 2 O 5 is demonstrated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and comparing bandgap values, and the structure and properties cannot be obtained by solid phase sintering. Using the luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) technology, the absolute temperature sensitivity (S A ) and relative temperature sensitivity (S R ) were 0.01359 K −1 and 0.01001 K −1 , respectively. The phosphor-converted 980 nm LEDs based on samples are fabricated, the CIE color coordinate can reach (0.20, 0.76), which exceeds NTSC standard. This indicates that this material can be used for temperature sensing and luminescence display applications.

Upconversion luminescence (UCL) of chiral inorganic nanostructured composite material and their applications have been challenging. This paper reports a successful preparation of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped chiral inorganic nanostructured BiOCl/Zn composite material (D-BYE-Zn) using a hydrothermal method and subsequent air annealing. The D-BYE-Zn phosphor significantly increased the intensity of UCL compared with the Er 3+ , Yb 3+ co-doped achiral bismuth oxychloride phosphor (A-BYE) and chiral bismuth oxychloride phosphor (D-BYE). Our study suggests that free electron leaps from the Zn fraction onto BiOCl may be responsible for the enhanced UCL. In addition, the temperature sensitive behavior of the D-BYE-Zn phosphor has been evaluated using the thermally coupled levels (TCLs) and non-thermally coupled levels (NTCLs) of Er 3+ and the maximum relative sensitivities (S R ) obtained are 0.95 % K −1 and 1.65 %K −1 (323 K). Our work provides a new strategy for constructing rare-earth doped chiral inorganic nanostructured composite materials to realize UCL enhancement while promising a wide range of applications in light source temperature measurement.

Cryolite-type materials have advantages of low phonon energy, easy rare-earth ion doping, and stable physicochemical properties , and they are considered ideal matrices for up-converting luminescent materials . In this paper, a series of K 3 LuF 6 :Er 3+ ,Yb 3+ up-converting materials with cryolite structure were prepared for the first time by high-temperature solid-phase method. The compositions , structures and luminescent properties were systematically characterized by X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fluorescence spectroscopy (PL). Under 980 nm excitation, the sample emission spectra mainly consisted of green and red emission bands with peaks at 525, 546 and 662 nm, corresponding to the 2 H 11/2 - 4 I 15/2 , 4 S 3/2 - 4 I 15/2 and 4 F 9/2 - 4 I 15/2 electron transitions of Er 3+ , respectively. In addition, the temperature sensing characteristics of two thermally coupled energy levels ( 2 H 2/11 and 4 S 3/2 ) were studied based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique in the range of 79–579 K. All the results show that K 3 LuF 6 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ up-converting luminescent materials have excellent temperature sensing performance in the ultra-wide temperature range and have broad application prospects in the field of temperature sensing.

A succession of erbium single-doped and erbium/ytterbium co-doped SrF2 nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated via a hydrothermal synthesis technique followed by high-temperature calcination. Structural, morphology, and element information of SrF2 NPs were explored using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) instruments. Under near-infrared (NIR) excitation, the SrF2:Er3+ NPs exhibit a prominent red emission peak (at 670 nm) as well as two oppositely faint green emission peaks (at 525 nm and 548 nm). The probable mechanism of the dominant red up-conversion luminescence (UCL) emission was systematically studied by UC emission spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and diffuse reflectance spectrum analyses. We used the energy gap law to estimate the probability of electronic transition, which determines the UCL emission route. The behavior of the R/G value (emission intensity of red to green ratio) and the slope n (the number of photons absorbed during the excitation process) reflected the existence of a highly efficient cross-relaxation (CR) effect during the UC process in the SrF2 system, so we can infer that the prominent red UCL emission is due to the CR effect among adjacent erbium atoms. After co-doping with ytterbium ions, the red UCL emission intensity is further enhanced. By comparing 2 mol% Er3+,5 mol% Yb3+ co-doped SrF2 samples with a similar composition without ytterbium doping, a red UCL emission intensity enhancement of about 200 times was observed. This increase is ascribed to the existence of effective energy transfer up-conversion (ETUC) from ytterbium to erbium, and the presence of a large absorption peak of ytterbium in the range of 830–1060 nm was observed in the diffuse reflectance spectrum, indicating that ytterbium's ability to absorb 980 nm photon energy is significantly stronger than erbium's. The strong red radiation obtained for erbium/ytterbium co-doped SrF2 NPs is expected to have potential application prospects in in vivo bio-imaging and photodynamic therapy.

Accurate and remote temperature measurements in harsh environments are of great importance. The FIR technique is self-referenced and regarded as a promising method to improve the temperature accuracy and simplify the experimental devices. Herein, a point all-fiber temperature sensor based on the FIR technique has been developed. Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped NaYF4 phosphors (NPs) were used to fabricate a temperature sensing probe combined with silica fiber. Highly crystalline and pure hexagonal NPs were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Intense green up-conversion luminescence was observed in the prototype sensor at an excitation power of 1 mW. The relationship between FIR value and temperature was investigated at the temperature range of 258–423 K. The maximum relative temperature sensitivity is 1.68% K−1 at 258 K. Preliminary experimental results indicate that the absolute error is ±1 K with a temperature uncertainty σ of 0.187 K and relative standard deviation of 0.133%, suggesting the high accuracy and reliability of the proposed all-fiber temperature sensor.

To realize photothermal therapy (PTT) of cancer/tumor both the photothermal conversion and temperature detection are required. Usually, the temperature detection in PTT needs complicated instruments, and the therapy process is out of temperature control in the present investigations. In this work, we attempt to develop a novel material for achieving both the photothermal conversion and temperature sensing and control at the same time. To this end, a core-shell structure with NaYF 4 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ core for temperature detection and NaYF 4 :Tm 3+ /Yb 3+ shell for photothermal conversion was designed and prepared. The crystal structure and morphology of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, the temperature sensing properties for the NaYF 4 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ and core-shell NaYF 4 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ @NaYF 4 :Tm 3+ /Yb 3+ nanoparticles were studied. It was found that the temperature sensing performance of the core-shell nanoparticles did not become worse due to coating of NaYF 4 :Tm 3+ /Yb 3+ shell. The photothermal conversion behaviors were examined in cyclohexane solution based on the temperature response, the NaYF 4 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ @NaYF 4 :Tm 3+ /Yb 3+ core-shell nanoparticles exhibited more effective photothermal conversion than that of NaYF 4 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ nanoparticles, and a net temperature increment of about 7 °C was achieved by using the core-shell nanoparticles.

Er3+/Yb3+/Sr2+-doped L-Ta2O5 upconversion phosphors were synthesized using the molten salt method with B2O3 as the solvent. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) results showed that Er3+/Yb3+/Sr2+ underwent intercalated intergrowth in L-Ta2O5. This structure facilitates energy transfer from Yb3+ to Er3+, resulting in outstanding pure green upconversion luminescence (UCL) intensity. The green UCL integrated intensity of L-Ta2O5:Er3+/Yb3+/Sr2+ was 1.53 and 3.14 times greater than that of β-NaYF4:Er3+/Yb3+ and the optimal NaY(WO4)2:Er3+/Yb3+ samples, respectively. The absolute and relative temperature sensitivity reached 1.383% and 0.992% K−1, respectively. The shift rate of the peak centroids reached 0.273 nm GPa−1 under high pressure. With its excellent performance, L-Ta2O5:Er3+/Yb3+/Sr2+ can be used in the fields of UCL display, temperature and pressure sensing.

Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped upconversion (UC) emission phosphors play crucial roles for advancing implantable temperature sensing technologies. However, the fabrication of high-performance optical fiber temperature sensor (OFTS) via these sensing materials remains a major challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a superior double-cladding OFTS by utilizing a bright and stable near-pure green UC phosphor NaLu(WO 4 ) 2 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ as sensing material. Comprehensive investigations show that the near pure-green UC emission mechanism is mainly attributed to the isolated distributed characteristics of Er 3+ (Yb 3+ ) ions and the relatively long distance between them in this system. The OFTS exhibits a high temperature measurement accuracy of 0.155°C at 303 K, excellent measuring repeatability and chemical stability, along with strong resistance to various physical interferences (excitation power fluctuation, mechanical vibration, etc.). Through non-destructive implantation of the OFTS into a sodium-ion pouch-type battery, the battery's internal thermal states (temperature variation) during constant current (CC)/constant voltage charging discharging processes at different C-rates are captured in real time. Moreover, we also get the temperature variation and distribution in vertical direction in an oil-water system via mobile measurement of the OFTS. This study not only provides a high performance implantable OFTS but also shows new insights into the design of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ based sensing materials.

Novel nanoplatform with excellent photothermal conversion and temperature feedback are preferable in clinical photothermal therapy (PTT). In this work, a hybrid of NaYF 4 :Er 3+ ,Yb 3+ @NaYF 4 upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) conjugated with gold nanorods (GNRs) was fabricated in order to achieve effective photothermal conversion and excellent temperature detection. In this nanoplatform, the GNRs as photo-activated nano-heaters could effectively convert the 808 nm photoenergy into heat, meanwhile UCNPs as 980 nm triggered temperature probe could read the temperature in an exact microdomain where the nanocomposite was located at. The effects of excitation source, GNRs concentration and power density on photothermal conversion were investigated. In addition, the difference between eigen temperature of nanoparticles and solution temperature, and the potential for temperature feedback were analyzed under double lasers excitation. Moreover, the photothermal conversion efficiency was experimentally confirmed from thermodynamic analysis. It was found that the nanocomposite can be an excellent nanoplatform for potential application in advanced PTT.
