This study extracted and purified a polysaccharide from Rehmanniae radix praeparata (RGP) with an average molecular weight. The structural characteristics of RGP and its iron (III) complex, RGP−Fe(III), were examined for their antioxidant properties and potential in treating iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Analysis revealed that RGP comprised Man, Rha, Gal, and Xyl, with a sugar residue skeleton featuring 1→3; 1→2, 3; and 1→2, 3, 4 linkages, among others. RGP−Fe(III) had a molecular weight of 4.39×10 4 Da. Notably, RGP−Fe(III) exhibited superior antioxidant activity compared to RGP alone. In IDA rat models, treatment with RGP−Fe(III) led to increased weight gain, restoration of key blood parameters including hemoglobin, red blood cells, and mean hemoglobin content, elevated serum iron levels, and decreased total iron-binding capacity. Histological examination revealed no observable toxic effects of RGP−Fe(III) on the liver and spleen. These findings suggest the potential of RGP−Fe(III) as a therapeutic agent for managing IDA and highlight its promising antioxidant properties. Graphical

The Search for natural blue colorants to broaden the palette in the food industry remains an ongoing challenge. We hypothesized that anthocyanin-metal complex could be a promising option for blue food coloring. This study investigated the stability and color property of various anthocyanins to form complexes with metal ions, revealing that the stability of complexes is influenced by hydrophilicity, binding affinity, and steric hindrance effects. On this basis, a complex consisting of petunidin-3- O -(trans- p -coumaroyl) rutinoside-5- O glucoside (Pet3(cou)R5G) and Fe(III) with good stability and coloration properties was discovered. Structural characterization by Job's plot (3,1 stoichiometry), mass spectrometry ([M] 2− at m/z 1424.4604), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (Fe O bond at 548 cm −1 ) and circular dichroism spectroscopy confirmed octahedral coordination. Notably, this complex exhibited a blue hue distinct from brilliant blue FCF, and demonstrated superior stability in candy. Overall, our research advances anthocyanin-based blue colorant development by elucidating structure-stability relationships and practical applications.

Understanding Fe incorporation in layered double hydroxide (LDH) phases is important for revealing the steel/cement interface interaction in low carbon cement. In this study, synchrotron-based characterization is combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to unravel the atomistic mechanisms controlling Fe(III) incorporation in Mg Al LDHs as a function of composition and local structure. XAS measurements reveal that Fe incorporation is strongly suppressed under trivalent-cation-rich compositions, leading to a preferential association of Fe with edge or defect-related environments. The spectra indicate that Fe(III) is incorporated into the LDH lattice in a well-defined octahedral environment under Mg-rich compositions. DFT calculations of substitution energies support these findings by showing that Fe(III) substitution for Al(III) in the main layers is strongly composition-dependent: Fe(III) incorporation is most unfavorable at Al-rich compositions but becomes progressively more favorable in Mg-rich environments. In Al-rich LDHs, Fe shortens neighboring Al O bonds, introducing local strain and lowering mechanical stability, while in Mg-rich LDHs the more flexible Mg O framework accommodates Fe(III) more effectively. Overall, this study defines molecular-level constraints governing Fe(III) incorporation into LDH phases in low-carbon cements. The results offer transferable insights concerning the influence of LDH composition on the interfacial phase assemblages relevant to steel corrosion protection.

The use of antibiotics has become an indispensable part of the production and life of human society. Among them, sulfonamide antibiotics widely used in humans and animals are considered to be one of the most crucial antibiotics. However, antibiotics are difficult to degrade naturally, leading to an accumulation in the environment and a potential hazard to human health. In this paper, WS 2 as a co-catalyst could reduce trace Fe(III) to Fe(II) which exhibited a great activating ability to PS through the exposed W(IV) active sites, and formed the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle to degrade sulfachloropyridazine (SCP) continuously. This paper systematically discussed the degradation of SCP under different conditions in the PS/WS 2 /Fe(III) system, including the amount of WS 2 , Fe(III) concentration, PS concentration, initial pH, natural organic matter (NOM) and common anions ( NO 3 − , Cl − , HCO 3 − , HPO 4 2− and H 2 PO 4 − ). The experimental results showed that PS/WS 2 /Fe(III) system possessed a strong degradation ability for SCP in a wide pH range. NO 3 − and Cl − could promote the degradation of SCP a little. HCO 3 − , HPO 4 2− and H 2 PO 4 − could significantly inhibit the degradation of SCP. The main types of free radicals that degraded SCP were explored. In addition, the stability and reusability of WS 2 were examined, and two possible degradation pathways of SCP were proposed.

Polyurethane (PU) is widely used in biomedical applications owing to its excellent physical and chemical properties. As an isocyanate-free PU material, fluorescent poly(hydroxyurethane) (FPHU) is synthesized from the addition of the cyclic carbonates with amines rather than the toxic isocyanate with diols, which reduces the possible injury to the human due to trace amounts of the isocyanate residues. Herein, we report the biocompatibility of a FPHU that can be synthesized from carbon dioxide, bisepoxides, and diamine in tandem. Of unique, FPHU exhibits a strong blue fluorescence and is selectively sensitive to Fe 3+ with a detection limit of 4.56 μ M . The overall results of the methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium, cytokine release, and hemolysis assays for FPHU indicates that FPHU has much lower cytotoxicity and immunotoxicity compared with the traditional isocyanate PU, as well as a good blood compatibility with less than 5% hemolysis rate. Therefore, FPHU presents as a kind of safer PU and can be prospectively applied in medical materials.

A novel PNIPAAm-CD hydrogel with good adsorption property and stable fluorescence detection for Fe 3+ was prepared by copolymerizing PCDs with NIPAAm monomers. As a fluorescence probe, carbon quantum dots (CDs) were modified by glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) to obtain PCDs, which had double bond and could react with N-isopropyl acrylamide to form hydrogel. The functionalization of the amine groups on the surface of the PCDs enables PNIPAAm-CD hydrogel also exhibits photoluminescence behavior. In addition, the PNIPAAm-CD hydrogels stably shows higher adsorption performance for Fe 3+ than the pure PNIPAAm hydrogel. The honeycomb PNIPAAm-CD hydrogel had a good quenching response to metallic iron ions, and the detection limit was as low as 0.27 μM in the range of 1μM~1mM. The results of adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics showed that the adsorption procedure of metal ions conforms to the pseudo-second-order model and langmuir model, respectively. The effective detection and the high adsorption of PNIPAAm-CD hydrogel for Fe 3+ make it an effective portable platform potential, which has the dual functions of visual detection and adsorption of Fe 3+ .

Reduced graphene oxide supported with ferric ion (Fe(III)-rGO) was successfully prepared, and performed as an excellent catalyst to activate hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for isoprothiolane (IPT) degradation. IPT removal efficiency was proven to be better in the Fe(III)-rGO/H 2 O 2 /PMS system (96.2%) than in the Fenton-like reaction (72.6%) and PMS-AOP (80.0%) individually. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that Fe(III) was reduced in Fenton-like reaction, and the reduced Fe(II) played a crucial role in the subsequent PMS-AOP. The combination of the Fenton-like reaction and PMS-AOP involved the valence state conversion of Fe, which consequently improved Fe(III)-rGO utilization rate and IPT removal efficiency. Fe(III)-rGO remarkably boosted the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and generated superoxide radical (O 2 − •) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) in the Fe(III)-rGO/H 2 O 2 /PMS system. Fe(III)-rGO acts as the electron transfer mediator; thus, promoting electron transfer from IPT to H 2 O 2 and PMS and accelerating the generation of active species. Fe(IV) with high oxidation performance was formed in PMS-AOP and efficiently removed some of the IPT. IPT removal efficiency was more than 90% at a pH range of 3–11; this efficiency could be maintained above 50% even after five consecutive degradation experiments, exhibiting excellent stability and reusability of Fe(III)-rGO. Additionally, iron sludge formation was greatly reduced because of the stable chemical bonding of iron ions to the rGO surface. Therefore, this study provides a new multisystem and synergistic approach for the efficient removal of organic micro-pollutants from water.

In pH 2.6 HCl solution, dopamine (DA) could reduce Fe(III) to Fe(II), which further reacted with [Fe(CN) 6 ] 3− to form a Fe 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] 2 complex. By virtue of hydrophobic force and Van der Waals force, the complex aggregated to form Fe 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] 2 nanoparticles with the average diameter of about 20 nm. This resulted in a significant enhancement of resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS). The maximum wavelength of the ion-association complex was located at about 350 nm. The increment of scattering intensity (Δ I RRS ) was directly proportional to the concentration of DA in the range of 0.06–1.0 μg/mL. This method has high sensitivity and the detection limit (3 σ ) for DA was 3.43 ng/mL. In this work, the characteristics of absorption and RRS spectra of this reaction have been studied. The optimum reaction condition and influencing factors have been investigated. The method was applied to the determination of DA in pharmaceutical samples with satisfactory results. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism and the reasons of RRS enhancement have been explored.

To tackle the issues of low adsorption capacity, poor regeneration efficiency, and limited recoverability in wastewater treatment adsorbents, we innovatively developed a low−cost Fe(III)−SA gel ball aerogel (FA) through a simple chemical crosslinking method. FA aerogel exhibits exceptional adsorption performance for a wide range of antibiotics, including norfloxacin (NOR), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), showcasing its broad applicability. Remarkably, FA achieved a maximum NOR adsorption capacity of 338.4 mg/g (Langmuir isotherm model, pH 7.0, 298 K, m/V=0.1 g/L). Furthermore, under the synergistic effect of photocatalysis, FA demonstrated a breakthrough by removing 97 % of NOR (30 mg/L, 50 mL) within just 150 min. Notably, FA displayed innovative regeneration capabilities, successfully completing 10 continuous and stable NOR removal cycles without loss of performance. The DFT calculations alongside experimental evidence were employed to elucidate the NOR degradation pathway, while electron density distribution and Fukui function analysis confirming the proposed degradation pathways through HPLC−MS results. Moreover, plant stress and zone of inhibition tests verified that the degradation intermediates were significantly less toxic, ensuring the safety of the regeneration process. This research introduces an innovative approach for designing superior adsorbents and provides critical insights into efficient and sustainable adsorbent regeneration.

A novel fluorescent chemosensor bearing a rhodamine and a dansyl moiety was developed for highly selective detection of Fe 3+ based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism. Binding of Fe 3+ to the chemosensor induced spirolactam ring opening in the rhodamine moiety and subsequent off–on FRET from the dansyl energy donor to the rhodamine energy acceptor due to the spectral overlap between the emission of the dansyl moiety and the absorption of the ring opened rhodamine moiety. Job’s plot analysis indicated a 1:1 binding stoichiometry between the chemosensor and Fe 3+ . The association constant was estimated to be 2.72 × 10 3 M −1 according to the Benesi–Hildebrand method. With the feature of easy synthesis, simple structural skeleton and excellent sensing ability, the newly synthesized chemosensor provided the potential for applying as a highly selective fluorescent probe in complex samples containing various competitive metal ions and developing other metal ion chemosensors to fulfill various needs of biological and environmental field.

Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death driven by excessive lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. Herein, we report a novel metal-coordinated nanoparticle system (OFe-NPs) fabricated via a one-pot self-assembly between orlistat and FeCl 3 ·6 H₂O for ferroptosis-based tumor therapy. The optimized OFe-NPs exhibited uniform nanoscale size and good colloidal stability under physiological conditions. In MCF-7 breast cancer cells, OFe-NPs showed significantly enhanced cytotoxicity compared with free orlistat, which was attributed to glutathione (GSH)-responsive disassembly and intracellular release of Fe ions and orlistat. Mechanistic investigations revealed that OFe-NPs effectively induced ferroptosis, as evidenced by increased lipid peroxidation, intracellular Fe 2+ accumulation, glutathione depletion, malondialdehyde elevation, and marked downregulation of GPX4. In an MCF-7 xenograft mouse model, OFe-NPs treatment significantly suppressed tumor growth, achieving a tumor inhibition rate of 76.76% with no evident systemic toxicity. These findings demonstrate that metal-coordinated orlistat–Fe(III) nanoparticles synergistically amplify ferroptosis via simultaneous iron-mediated oxidative stress and GPX4 suppression, offering a promising strategy for cancer therapy.

The Fenton-like application potential of MoS2 has recently attracted widespread interest in advanced oxidation processes. This study utilized natural molybdenite ore as the source of MoS2, and the Fenton-like reactivity of molybdenite was further enhanced by dropping Fe(III) ions on the basal planes of MoS2. EDS elemental analysis and XPS results suggest that Fe species were successfully anchored on the molybdenite surface, which exhibited exceptional efficiency in peracetic acid (PAA) activation. The Fe-molybdenite/PAA system achieved 83.2% degradation of sulfamethazine (SMT) within 30 min, and the reaction efficiency by Fe-molybdenite was 3.3 times higher than that of the unmodified molybdenite. HO• and Fe(V) were identified as the reactive species (RSs) during PAA activation, and SMT was degraded by these RSs. Increasing Fe-molybdenite and PAA dosages enhanced SMT degradation, with optimal performance observed at pH 4. Hydroxylation, nitrification, Smiles rearrangement and radical recombination reactions were involved during SMT degradation. Tetracyclines, dyes and other sulphonamide antibiotics could also be well degraded by Fe-molybdenite/PAA. This study elucidates fundamental design principles for engineering Fenton-like catalysts from natural mineral precursors.
