Earth-Abundant Na-Mg-Fe-Mn-O Cathode with Reversible Hybrid Anionic and Cationic Redox

Yaoshen Niu,Zilin Hu,Bo Zhang,Dongdong Xiao,Huican Mao,Lin Zhou,Feixiang Ding,Yuan Liu,Yang Yang,Juping Xu,Wen Yin,Nian Zhang,Zhiwei Li,Xiqian Yu,Hao Hu,Yaxiang Lu,Xiaohui Rong,Ju Li,Yong-Sheng Hu

Na-ion batteries (NIBs) are promising for grid-scale energy storage applications. However, the lack of Co, Ni-free cathode materials has made them less cost-effective. In this work, Mg 2+ is successfully utilized to activate the oxygen redox reaction in earth-abundant Fe/Mn-based layered cathodes to achieve reversible hybrid anionic and cationic redox capacities. A high first charge capacity of ≈210 mAh g −1 with balanced charge–discharge efficiency is achieved without O-loss, showing a promising energy cost of $2.02 kWh −1 . Full cell against hard carbon anode without pre-sodiation shows energy density exceeding ≈280 Wh kg −1 with a decent capacity retention of 85.6% after 100 cycles. A comprehensive analysis of the charge compensation mechanisms and structural evolution is conducted. Voltage and capacity loss resulting from partially reversible Fe 3+ migration to the Na layer is confirmed, shedding light on further improvements for low-cost NIB cathodes in application scenarios.

Efficient green separation of Fe-Mn magnetics in manganese sulfate residue via Mn morphology control

Wentao Li,Qian Zhang,Zuohua Liu,Changyuan Tao,Guocan Zheng,Nanxiong Chen,Dong Wang,Hufei Chen

The long-term accumulation of manganese sulfate residues can lead to the release of soluble manganese ions, thereby contaminating the surrounding environment. Although numerous methods exist to address the issue of soluble manganese ions, current harmless treatment approaches fail to consider the subsequent utilization of manganese slag. This study aims to control the magnetic properties of processed residues by adjusting the addition of barium hydroxide and the reaction duration. Our results reveal that the harmless treatment of manganese sulfate slag is achievable with various amounts of barium hydroxide, and the magnetic properties of the reconstructed slag increase with the increased barium hydroxide dosage. Magnetic separation is employed to separate the magnetic components from the reconstructed slag, and the distribution state of these magnetic substance is modulated by altering the particle size and reagent addition. Under optimal conditions, this study finds that the grade of iron was 24.17 %, the grade of manganese was 8.08 %, and the recovery could reach 79 % for iron and 70 % for manganese. Finally, the fining slag obtained by magnetic separation was utilized as an additive in the preparation of ferrites, reducing the minimum reflection loss of the ferrites to −16.18 dB, signifying up to 90 % electromagnetic wave attenuation. These findings indicate that the fining slags holds great potential as a dopant for ferrites, offering a viable pathway for the resourceful and environmentally friendly treatment of manganese sulfate residues.

Electrospinning Chitosan/Fe-Mn Nanofibrous Composite for Efficient and Rapid Removal of Arsenite from Water

Lingli Min,Yahui Ma,Bi Zhang,Dulan He,Jinhua Chen,Xuerong Li,Shuhua Wang,Yulang Chi

Efficient removal of extremely mobile and toxic As(III) from water is a challenging but critical task. Herein, we developed a functionalized sorbent of chitosan nanofiber with iron–manganese (Fe-Mn@CS NF) using a one-step hybrid electrospinning approach to remove trace As(III) from water. Batch adsorption studies were performed to determine the adsorption efficiency under a variety of conditions, including contact time, starting concentration of As(III), ionic strength, and the presence of competing anions. The experimental results demonstrated that the concentration of As(III) dropped from 550 to less than 1.2 µg/L when using 0.5 g/L Fe-Mn@CS NF. This demonstrates the exceptional adsorption efficiency (99.8%) of Fe-Mn@CS NF for removing As(III) at pH 6.5. The kinetic tests revealed that the adsorption equilibrium was reached in 2.6 h, indicating a quick uptake of As(III). The ionic strength effect analysis showed that the adsorbed As(III) formed inner-sphere surface complexes with Fe-Mn@CS NF. The presence of SO42−or F−had a negligible impact on As(III) uptake, while the presence of PO43−impeded As(III) absorption by competing for adsorption sites. The exhausted sorbent could be effectively regenerated with a dilute NaOH solution. Even after 10 cycles of regenerating Fe-Mn@CS NF, the adsorption efficiency of As(III) in natural groundwater was maintained over 65%. XPS and FTIR analyses show that the presence of M–OH and C–O groups on the sorbent surface is essential for removing As(III) from water. Overall, our study highlights the significant potential of Fe-Mn@CS NF for the efficient and quick elimination of As(III) from water.

Al/Ti Co-doped Fe/Mn-based layered oxide for high-performance sodium-ion storage

Wenshuo Zhao,Yanzhe Zhang,Yong-Li Wang,Tong Wu,Yingying Zhang,Jingjing Sun,Xiangrong Liu,YONGJIE ZHAO

Fe-Mn based layered transition metal oxides are compelling candidates for sodium-ion cathodes owing to their high specific capacity and cost-effectiveness. However, their practical application is hampered by inherent challenges including the Jahn-Teller effect, lattice oxygen loss, transition metal dissolution. In this study, Al/Ti co-doped Na0.67Fe0.4Mn0.4Al0.1Ti0.1O2 (FM-AT) cathode is proposed and prepared. The introduction of Al/Ti, creating strong Al-O and Ti-O bonds, effectively stabilizes the lattice oxygen and elevates the reversibility of anionic redox reactions. Furthermore, the stability of the transition metal layer is effectively enhanced, suppressing transition metal dissolution and the P2-OP4 phase transition associated with TMO2 layer slippage at deep charge states. The FM-AT demonstrates excellent cycling stability, with a capacity of 137.1 mAh g-1 under 20 mA g-1 and a capacity retention of 85.5% after 50 cycles (55.7% for the pristine FM cathode). Even after 200 cycles under 200 mA g-1, a capacity retention of 72.1% is achieved (versus 20.9% for the FM). This work offers a novel method for enhancing the structural stability of iron-manganese based electrode and designing cost-effective, high-performance sodium ion cathodes.

Enhanced Toluene Degradation Using Fe–Mn Bimetallic Catalyst in a Gaseous H2O2 Fenton-Like System

Wang Shu,Tian Lijiang,Zhai Zhenyu,Zhang Jie,Pan Fan,Wang Minqi,Zong Mengchen

Fe-based Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs) show promise as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts; however, in the removal of hydrophobic VOCs, traditional wet Fenton systems suffer from slow Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycling and high gas–liquid mass transfer resistance, severely limiting their industrial application. To address these challenges, this study proposes a dual optimization strategy. Specifically, a gas-phase H 2 O 2 Fenton-like system was constructed to overcome mass transfer limits, and multivalent Mn was introduced into the MIL-100(Fe) to accelerate the Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycle. Among the synthesized catalysts, MIL-100(Fe 4 Mn 1 ) (4FM) exhibited superior catalytic performance, achieving 85% toluene degradation efficiency and a capacity of 87.17 μg C 7 H 8 /(g·min)) under optimized conditions, significantly outperforming its monometallic counterparts. Characterization results reveal that 4FM retains an ordered crystalline structure with highly dispersed active sites and an optimized pore architecture. Mechanistic studies indicate that Fe–Mn synergy induces an “electron pump” effect, utilizing the thermodynamic potential differences to accelerate the reduction of Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ . Concurrently, the system establishes dual reaction centers (Fe and Mn), where efficient Mn 2+ /Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ and Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ redox cycles facilitate sustained gaseous H 2 O 2 activation into hydroxyl radicals (·OH), promoting efficient toluene degradation. This study provides a promising strategy utilizing gas-phase Fenton-like catalytic technology to overcome kinetic and mass transfer bottlenecks in degrading of hydrophobic VOCs. Graphical

Enhanced removal of Sb(III) from aqueous solutions using Fe-Mn binary oxide-modified attapulgite

Weixiao Gong,Zhendong Liu,Zheng Wang,Yannan Jia,Guanghui Lu,Lu Li,Xiaoqin Li,Junchi Zhang,Haichen Cui,Yuanxiang Shan,Wanting Feng,Hongqin Xue

FeMn-HATP was synthesized as an efficient Sb(III) adsorbent. • Synergistic oxidative adsorption by FeMn-HATP enhances Sb(III) removal efficiency. • Kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic studies investigated FeMn-HATP adsorption. • An Sb(III) degradation mechanistic pathway is proposed. • FeMn-HATP demonstrated excellent regeneration performance in fixed-bed column tests. An affordable, environmentally friendly, simple adsorbent for Sb(III) removal from aqueous solutions was prepared using attapulgite (ATP) as the matrix, and FeSO 4 and KMnO 4 as metal precursors, through an in situ precipitation approach. The morphology, pore structure, and surface chemical properties of the material were analyzed using various characterization techniques. The results indicate that the iron-manganese bimetallic-modified acid-activated ATP (FeMn-HATP) surface is loaded with relatively uniformly distributed iron and manganese components, and its specific surface area and pore structure differ significantly from the original ATP. These changes promote pollutant molecule diffusion and contact. In batch adsorption experiments, FeMn-HATP achieved good Sb(III) removal performance and remained relatively stable within a pH range of 4 −10. The material maintained a relatively stable adsorption capacity even in the presence of high concentrations of other anions. Adsorption of Sb(III) by the modified ATP better conforms to both Elovich kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, with a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 102.79 mg/g at 318.15 K. Fixed-bed cycling experiments demonstrated that FeMn-HATP retained significant adsorption capacity after five NaOH regenerations, with a dynamic adsorption capacity of 14.68 mg/g and a regeneration efficiency of 68.16%. Overall, FeMn-HATP exhibits good potential for Sb(III) removal with a degree of reusability, indicating promise for the treatment of antimony-containing wastewater. Degradation and phosphorus immobilization treatment of organophosphate esters hazardous waste by Fe-Mn bimetallic oxide

Wenhua Tong,Xinhang Du,Jiepeng Wang,Hao Yan,Tonghui Xie,Yabo Wang,Yongkui Zhang

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) waste is difficult to dispose effectively because of its stability and the potential risk of P element. In this study, taking one typical organic extractant of tributyl phosphate (TBP) as an example, we proposed a strategy to treat OPEs inspired by chemical looping combustion (CLC) technology—oxygen carrier immobilization process (OCIP), aiming at efficient TBP degradation and simultaneous P immobilization. Adopting Fe-Mn bimetallic oxide (FMBO) as oxygen carrier, an almost 100% P immobilization efficiency was achieved under recommended conditions which were obtained by response surface methodology . Meanwhile, gaseous products released from TBP degradation, e.g., non-methane hydrocarbon, was lower than the maximum allowable emission concentration limit. Further characterizations implied that P-species released from reaction process were mainly immobilized as stable inorganic forms of metaphosphate, phosphate and pyrophosphate. On the basis of identifying degradation intermediates, we proposed a possible degradation pathways. FMBO as an oxygen carrier provided sufficient oxygen molecules for flameless combustion of OCIP process. Electron paramagnetic resonance measurement confirmed the existence of oxygen vacancies on FMBO surface, which contributed to the formation of •O 2 − . Oxidation by oxygen molecules and •O 2 − attack resulted in the degradation and mineralization of TBP, with simultaneously achieving P stabilization.

Raman study of the spin–lattice excitations of the layered antiferromagnets MPSe3 (M = Fe, Mn)

Jin Qiu,Wen-Juan Huang,Young Jin Lee,Seung Kim,Xiang-Bai Chen,In-Sang Yang

Magnetism in van der Waals (vdW) materials has recently garnered significant attention due to their potential for advanced applications. In this study, we investigate the magnetic transition in layered MPSe 3 (M = Fe, Mn) bulk flakes utilizing temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy. Our findings reveal unique features in the Raman spectrum that are strongly correlated with the antiferromagnetic ordering in MPSe 3 . We analyze the spin-dependent Raman scattering modes in MPSe 3 by applying the Suzuki–Kamimura formalism. Consequently, our comparative analyses of the spin correlation function and the reduced magnetization provide compelling evidence of the 2D Ising characteristic especially in FePSe 3 . Our results clearly show the potential of MPSe 3 as a prominent platform for exploring fundamental aspects of low-dimensional magnetism.

A study on separation of Mn and Fe from high-alumina ferruginous manganese ores by the carbothermal roasting reduction process

Lihua Gao,Zhenggen Liu,Yuzhu Pan,Cong Feng,Yang Ge,Mansheng Chu

Carbothermal reduction followed by magnetic separation has been recognized as an effective recovery strategy to achieve separation of Mn and Fe from ferruginous manganese ores (Fe-Mn ores). However, it is difficult to improve the recovery of manganese more than 85% by changing carbothermic roasting reduction and magnetic separation. This work clarified the underlying reason for the poor separation with the magnetic separation process and proposed a promising process for the recovery of Fe and Mn from Fe-Mn ore. The effect of operating variables on recovery and separation of Mn and Fe from Fe-Mn ore is initially investigated during the carbothermic reduction roasting process followed by magnetic separation to reveal the underlying reason for the poor separation from Fe-Mn ores. Then, the stepwise reduction behaviors of the MnO-Fe 2 O 3 and MnO-Fe 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 systems were investigated to clarify that the formation of composite oxide Mn 1−x Fe x O (0 < x < 0.497) and hercynite (FeO·Al 2 O 3 ) directly caused the poor separation of Fe and Mn from high-alumina Fe-Mn ores. Then, the stepwise reduction roasting behaviors of Mn 1−x Fe x O and FeO·Al 2 O 3 were investigated by XRD, SEM-EDS and XPS analysis. After adjusting the experimental parameters, iron-rich products with a Fe recovery of 94.31% and a grade of 85.21% and manganese-rich product with a Mn recovery of 90.05% and a grade of 54.35% are obtained. The mass ratio of Mn/Fe increased to 8.5 in the manganese-rich product.

Synergistic adsorption of norfloxacin by magnetic Fe-Mn modified biochar: mechanisms and role of surface functionalities

Jingbo Wang,Yingzhe Bao,Xiulan Ma,Shan Jiang,Ziyue Zhou,Bo Wang

Norfloxacin (NOR) is widely used in aquaculture; however, its overuse has been shown to cause water pollution. In this research, NOR was chosen as the target pollutant, and agricultural waste, specifically corn cobs, was used to prepare ferromagnetic iron-manganese composite modified biochar (FMBC) for adsorbing NOR from aquaculture wastewater. The adsorption mechanism was explored using various characterization techniques and evaluating the adsorption performance. The results indicate that the optimal modification conditions for FMBC include an iron source concentration of 0.3 M, the iron-manganese ratio is 3:1, with a calcination temperature of 350°C. At pH 6, FMBC achieved an adsorption capacity of 31.17 mg/g for NOR, which is approximately 85.5% and 49.14% higher than that of pristine biochar (BC) and iron-modified biochar (FBC), respectively. The adsorption process obeyed pseudo-second order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model. As the temperature increased, the adsorption capacity of FMBC for NOR decreased. The adsorption capacity of FMBC for NOR increased at low concentrations of Cu 2+ (maximum 25 mg/L), but at higher concentrations, it was inhibited. FMBC demonstrated the capacity to maintain NOR removal performance at a rate of greater than 50% following five cycles. The adsorption processes of FMBC for NOR are driven by several factors: pore filling, electrostatic adsorption, hydrogen bonding, surface complexation, π-π interactions, and hydrophobic bonding. In summary, this novel composite material offers promising prospects for mitigating water pollution in aquaculture, making it a cost-effective and sustainable alternative.

Manipulating microenvironment of Fe/Mn dual-atomic sites by defect-driven strategy for enhanced oxygen electrocatalysis

Jiabei Yu,Depeng Zhang,Xinyu Lu,Siqi Wang,Liying Wang,Yuqing Zhang,Sen Zhang,Chao Deng

Dual single-atom catalysts (DACs) provide an efficient clue to conquer the sluggish kinetics of oxygen reactions in Zn-air batteries (ZABs). However, the precise modulation on local microenvironment of DACs sites are still challenging. Herein, we report a defect-driven strategy to manipulate the microenvironment of Fe/Mn dual atomic sites that anchor on a carbon nanofiber (def-FeMn/CNF). Theoretical calculation results reveal that the defects modulate the local microenvironment of dual atom sites, which decreases the energy barrier and enhances the catalytic behaviors. Finite element analysis (FEA) modeling results demonstrate the porous carbon nanofiber is beneficial to mass transports and ensures fast kinetics. Benefitting from both aspects of advantages, the def-FeMn/CNF catalyst displays the superior pH-universal electrocatalytic properties, fast kinetics, and high stability. It exhibits the half-wave potentials of 0.92 V and 0.87 V in alkaline and acidic conditions, which outperform the FeMn-DAC/CNF, N–FeMn/CNF, Fe-SAC/CNF, and Mn-SAC/CNF reference samples. Moreover, the full Zn-air battery (ZABs) with def-FeMn/CNF cathode shows the high power densities of 295 W kg −1 and high stability over long-term (1000 h) cycling. Furthermore, the quasi-solid-state Zn-air batteries achieve a smooth operation over a wide-temperature range and a long-term (800 h) operational stability at curved state. Therefore, the defect-driven approach provides an efficient strategy to manipulate the local microenvironment of DACs for boosted catalytic properties. Moreover, it also gives a new clue to design and fabrication of pH-universal electrocatalysts towards diverse working conditions. A highly-stable layered Fe/Mn-based cathode with ultralow strain for advanced sodium-ion batteries

Rui Qi,Mihai Chu,Wenguang Zhao,Ziwei Chen,Lei Liao,Shisheng Zheng,Xiping Chen,Lei Xie,Tongchao Liu,Yang Ren,Lei Jin,Khalil Amine,Feng Pan,Yinguo Xiao

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with iron- and manganese-based cathode electrodes have exhibited great promise in the grid-scale energy storage systems , on the basis of the satisfactory theoretical capacity, as well as huge abundance, low price and non-toxicity of raw materials. However, the inferior cycle life of cathode materials originating from their poor structural stability remains a formidable challenge towards practical applications. Here, an efficient strategy of improving the structure durability is demonstrated in iron- and manganese-based cathodes by dual heteroatom doping. The as-obtained P2-type Na 0.65 Li 0.08 Cu 0.08 Fe 0.24 Mn 0.6 O 2 cathode delivers superior cyclability (88.2% capacity retention for 500 cycles at 2C), fabulous rate capability (76% capacity retention at 5C compared to 0.1C), and a useable reversible capacity of around 85 mAh g −1 at 0.1C. Through in-depth characterizations, the underlying structure-property relationship is established, revealing that the complete solid-solution reaction during cycling ensures the ultralow volume variation (as small as 0.7%) and excellent electrochemical performance. These results highlight the significance of fabricating a stable host for the design and development of advanced SIBs with long life.
