Owing to the high theoretical energy density, lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) have been regarded as a highly competitive technology for next-generation energy storage systems. However, the commercial deployment of LSBs is affected by the diffusional loss of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and the inherently slow electrochemical conversion rates. Dual atom catalysts (DACs) have emerged as one of the most promising catalytic materials for LSB by expediting the kinetic conversion of LiPSs and facilitate the formation/decomposition of Li 2 S during the battery cycling process, thereby reducing the migration of LiPSs. In this study, we developed Fe-Ni DACs supported on nitrogen-doped few-layer graphene (FeNi-N-G) as a host for sulfur cathode. Both theoretical calculations and experimental results demonstrate that this few-layer graphene structure provides high conductivity and a porous framework, which significantly improves electron and lithium-ion transport. The dual-functional Fe-Ni–N site serve as strong anchoring centers for polysulfides while simultaneously providing active sites to improve the Li–S redox kinetics. Consequently, the cathode achieves a high initial capacity of 1164.6 mAh g −1 and maintains a capacity retention of 83.1% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C. Such performance underscores its exceptional cycling durability, particularly under high sulfur loading conditions.

The electrocatalytic co-reduction of nitrate (NO 3 − ) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into urea represents a potential avenue for achieving efficient urea production. However, this process involves intricate C–N coupling reactions and faces a severe kinetic mismatch between the reduction pathways. This disparity typically leads to a disproportionate coverage of key C- and N-containing intermediates on the catalyst surface, resulting in dominant competitive side reactions. Herein, we report the design of a heterogeneous FeNi@AC catalyst that integrates isolated Fe single atoms and Fe–Ni dual-atom sites at the atomic scale, enabling the efficient conversion of NO 3 − and CO 2 into urea. Combined experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the isolated Fe single-atom sites retain high nitrate reduction capability. Crucially, the introduction of Ni induces an electronic reconfiguration of the Fe center, which significantly lowers the energy barrier for CO 2 activation (from 0.7 eV to 0.1 eV). This activation effectively bridges the kinetic gap between C- and N-species. Consequently, the FeNi@AC catalyst achieves a urea yield rate of 13.6 mmol g –1 h –1 and a Faradaic efficiency of 51.7% at –0.8 V (vs RHE). This work not only presents an active catalyst for urea synthesis but also provides a site-specific regulation strategy for designing multifunctional atomic-site catalysts tailored for complex tandem reactions.

Designing cost-effective bifunctional catalysts with high-performance and durability is of great significance for renewable energy systems. Herein, typical Fe, Ni-codoped W18O49/NF was prepared via a simple solvothermal method. The incorporation of Fe ions enhanced the electronic interaction and enlarged the electrochemically active surface area. The increased W4+ leads to a high proportion of unsaturated WO bonds, thus enhancing the adsorption capacity of water. The valence configuration of nickel (Ni) sites in such dual-cation doping is well adjusted, realizing a high proportion of trivalent Ni ions (Ni3+). Due to the orbital interactions, the Fe3+/Ni3+ ions and OER reaction intermediates exhibit strong orbital overlap. The positions of the valence band and conduction band are well modulated. As a result, the Fe, Ni-codoped W18O49/NF shows improved electrocatalytic activity, and achieves a low decomposition voltage of 1.58 V at 10 mA cm−2 and retains long-time stability.

Nickel sulfide is regarded as one of the most promising substitutes for the best-performing disposable molybdenum catalyst in the hydrogenolysis of lignite and heavy residue, but its practical application is hindered severely by insufficient catalytic activity and a prohibitively large dosage. Herein, we report that the issues of activity and cost of nickel sulfide can be addressed simultaneously by employing a combination of iron incorporation and a dispersing strategy via oil-soluble ligands. Motivated by first-principles calculations where iron incorporation in nickel sulfide would lead to a better activity towards the rate-limiting step of hydrogenolysis compared with nickel sulfide alone, we successfully prepared a well-dispersed Fe-Ni-S catalyst by coordinating active metal salts with carboxylate ligands and a subsequent essential sulfurization. The synthesized Fe-Ni-S catalyst outperformed not only the monometallic nickel catalyst but also the commercial molybdenum catalyst in the hydrogenolysis of lignite and heavy residue, and exhibited a high conversion efficiency, hydrogen consumption, hydrogen/carbon product atomic ratio, and dispersibility of solid residues, with an economic nickel dosage of as low as ~250 μg·g −1 . Structural changes of raw coal and solid residues further confirmed the role of the Fe-Ni-S catalyst in facilitating the hydrogenolysis of lignite and heavy residue.

Hydrogen is one of the most desirable sources with large energy density . Electrocatalysis of hydrogen evolution reaction is a promising way to produce hydrogen since it can be powered by renewable energy such as solar and wind energy . However, the mainstream electrocatalyst is noble metal (Pt/Ru/Ir), which is expensive and rare. It is necessary to develop non-noble metal catalysts toward HER from the perspective of sustainable development and long-term environmental conservation. Therefore, this paper provides a cheap and feasible way to synthesize the Fe–Ni bimetallic N-doped carbon framework (Fe–Ni@NCF). The prepared Fe–Ni@NCF exhibits the desired overpotential of 219 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline and 259 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in acidic solution, respectively. Besides, it exhibits similar current density loss as commercial Pt/C after 10,000 segments of CVs, which suggests satisfactory durability.

The development of high-performance anode materials remains a critical challenge in advancing microbial fuel cells (MFCs). In this work, we present a novel strategy employing ternary transition metal Co-Fe-Ni sulfides to overcome the inherent trade-off between catalytic activity and structural stability commonly observed in conventional polymetallic sulfides. Through a facile one-pot solvothermal approach, we synthesized low-crystallinity CoFeNiS x (Co-Fe-Ni) ternary sulfides with precisely tunable Co/Fe/Ni molar ratios. When integrated as an MFC anode, the optimized Co-Fe-Ni sulfide delivered a maximum power density of 3915 mW m −2 using Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) as the biocatalyst, representing an 8.4% enhancement over its binary CoFeS x (Co-Fe) analogue. This performance exceeds that of most previously reported carbon-based anodes. The synthesized transition metal sulfides combine ease of fabrication with outstanding electrocatalytic efficiency. Our findings highlight the underexplored potential of ternary transition metal sulfides in engineering next-generation bioelectrochemical interfaces. Doping Ni into Co-Fe anode forms novel intermetallic linkages, accelerating electrochemical kinetics and reducing charge transfer resistance for maximum MFCs power output.

In this work, oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts Fe/Ni bimetal and nitrogen co-doped porous carbon fibers (Fe x /Ni y -NPCF), derived from electrospun nanofiber , have been prepared. In order to optimize the ORR performance of one dimension (1D) catalysts, SiO 2 were used as template to create the hierarchical porous structure. The morphology of Fe x /Ni y -NPCF was investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). By adjusting the ratio of iron and nickel, the influence of the trace of secondary-metal doping in electrocatalyst on catalytic activity was deeply studied. The electrochemical measurements suggested that the trace of secondary-metal doping was good for increasing the half-wave potential of electrocatalyst. The optimized Fe 28 /Ni 2 -NPCF exhibited an excellent catalytic activity with an onset potential of 0.96 V and a half-wave potential of 0.88 V, which are comparable to that of the benchmark 20 wt% Pt/C. This excellent catalytic performance was derived from secondary-metal doping and abundant pore structure .

The sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) hampers the H2 production by H2O electrolysis, and it is very important for the development of highly efficient and low-priced OER catalysts. Herein, a representative metalloporphyrinic MOF, PCN-600-Ni, integrated with graphene oxide (GO), serves as an ideal precursor and template to afford bimetallic iron–nickel phosphide/reduced graphene oxide composite (denoted as Fe–Ni–P/rGO-T; T represents pyrolysis temperature) via pyrolysis and subsequent phosphidation process. Thanks to the highly porous structure, the synergetic effect of Fe and Ni elements in bimetallic phosphide, and the good conductivity endowed by rGO, the optimized Fe–Ni–P/rGO-400 exhibits remarkable OER activity in 1 M KOH solution, affording an extremely low overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA/cm2, which is far superior to the commercial IrO2 and among the best in all non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts.

The integration of metal–organic frameworks with other functional materials has recently emerged as a promising approach for creating innovative materials for environmental remediation. Here, a nano-sized iron/nickel (Fe/Ni) functionalized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8-Fe/Ni) was fabricated for oxytetracycline (OTC) removal from wastewater. Cyclic voltammetry and amperometric I-t measurements indicated that OTC was degraded by ZIF-8-Fe/Ni. X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), transmission electron microscopy mapping (TEM-mapping) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that Fe/Ni was evenly dispersed throughout ZIF-8 and partially oxidized after reaction with OTC. OTC adsorption isotherms and kinetics best fitted the Langmuir isotherm ( R 2 > 0.982) and pseudo-second-order model ( R 2 > 0.997), respectively. Reduction kinetics data followed the pseudo-first-order model ( R 2 > 0.905), where the apparent activation energy ( E a) was 22.9 kJ mol −1 , demonstrating that OTC degradation was mainly via a chemical process. The practical removal efficiency of OTC from real wastewater by ZIF-8-Fe/Ni was 92.6%, where even after application of ZIF-8-Fe/Ni for 5 consecutive removal cycles, a high OTC removal of 74.9% was maintained. Thus ZIF-8-Fe/Ni exhibited both high removal efficiency and good recyclability .

The storage of carbon in Earth’s mantle is an important consideration within the framework of the deep carbon cycle . In the deep (>250 km depth) reduced mantle, carbon storage mechanisms differ greatly from those in the oxidized shallow mantle. To investigate the stability of carbon-bearing phases in Earth’s deep mantle, we experimentally constrained compositional effects on phase stability in the Fe-Ni-S-C system at conditions relevant to the deep upper mantle and mantle transition zone. Our experiments suggest that carbide is absent at 10 GPa and 1450 °C in the Ni-poor (molar Ni/(Ni + Fe) = 0.2) portion of the metal-sulfide-carbon ternary, with carbon occurring as diamond or dissolved in the Fe-Ni-S-C melt. At 19 GPa and 1450 and 1600 °C, (Fe,Ni) 7 C 3 saturates in the melt with C-rich (4.78–9.47 wt%), S-poor (2.29–6.98 wt%) bulk compositions. In comparison, Fe-Ni alloy only saturates with the C- and S-poor bulk composition of 77.88 wt% Fe, 19.47 wt% Ni, 1.93 wt% S, and 0.72 wt% C. Based on these results, we trained machine learning models to predict carbon solubility in Fe-Ni-S-C melts. Compared to classical regression models, machine learning models significantly improve the accuracy of carbon solubility predictions. Combined, our experimental and machine learning results suggest that diamond and Fe-Ni-S-C melt are the primary hosts of carbon in the convecting deep upper mantle and throughout most of the mantle transition zone. In the deepest parts of the transition zone, however, carbide is likely to precipitate at adiabatic temperatures in C-rich mantle sources .

en Transition metal-based amorphous/crystalline (a/c) heterostructured catalysts have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional activity, stability, and cost-effectiveness. However, the precise synergistic regulation of interfacial composition and phase states remains challenging. Herein, we propose an innovative strategy for the controllable synthesis of a/c heterostructures using MIL-100(Mn) template. By leveraging the intrinsic coordination disparity between Ni 2+ and Fe 3+ to drive phase separation, combined with F − mediated ion exchange-phosphidation synergy, we successfully constructed an amorphous FeP x /crystalline Ni 2 P heterostructure (a-(F, Fe)P x /Ni 2 P) with precise compositional control. Systematic investigations reveal that F − not only enhances metal ion exchange through complex stabilization but also induces amorphous/crystalline phase separation via electronic modulation. Meanwhile, a deep reconstruction process occurs under high voltage, transforming the catalyst into active F-Fe/NiOOH species, which further enhances the catalytic activity and durability. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of heterointerface electronic coupling and deep reconstruction, the as-prepared a-(F, Fe)P x /Ni 2 P catalyst exhibits exceptional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in 1 M KOH, delivering an ultralow overpotential of 278 mV at 30 mA cm −2 and maintaining excellent stability over 100 h with negligible degradation. This work establishes a novel “coordination difference-driven, fluorine-mediated” interface engineering strategy, offering valuable insights for the rational design of high-performance heterostructured electrocatalysts.

For the first time, the dechlorination of 2,6-dichlorophenol (2,6-DCP) by carbon nanotubes supported Fe/Ni nanoparticles (CNTs-Fe/Ni) was studied to explore the practicability of environmental remediation. Removal capacity of CNTs-Fe/Ni for 2,6-DCP was enhanced obviously compared to Fe/Ni due to reduced aggregation of Fe/Ni nanoparticles .The removal efficiency increased as the increase of CNTs-Fe/Ni dosage and Ni loading, whereas it decreased as the increase of 2,6-DCP concentration. Weak acidic condition was considered to be advantageous to 2,6-DCP dechlorination. The dechlorination kinetics results suggested that the 2,6-DCP removal by CNTs-Fe/Ni accorded with pseudo-first-order equation. Moreover, carbon nanotubes as support accelerated the mass transfer of 2,6-DCP from solution to catalyst surface and promoted the formation of atomic hydrogen, which also led to an enhancement of reactivity of CNTs-Fe/Ni on removing 2,6-DCP.
