Two-dimensional titanium carbide decorated nanoscale iron sulfide: Synthesis, characterization, and behavior for uranium (VI) removal

Yinzhi Lv,Lin Chen,Anning Zhang,Guodong Sheng,Qing Liao

In this study, a novel nanocomposite of iron sulfide supported on two-dimensional titanium carbide (FeS@Ti 3 C 2 T x ) was constructed and applied in U(VI) removal from wastewater under anoxic conditions. The results demonstrated that FeS@Ti 3 C 2 T x had excellent removal ability, and the highest scavenging capacity reached 1098.2 mg/g at T = 303 K, which was better than that on Ti 3 C 2 T x or FeS material under the same experimental conditions. Various factors, such as contact time, initial pH, adsorbent dose and initial U(VI) concentration, were comprehensively investigated by batch experiments. U(VI) removal on FeS@Ti 3 C 2 T x was strongly dependent on the initial pH, and its optimum value was at pH = 5.0. The reaction process of U(VI) removal on FeS@Ti 3 C 2 T x reached equilibrium within 3 h. The kinetics and isotherm analyses under different conditions demonstrated that U(VI) removal on FeS@Ti 3 C 2 T x was in accordance with pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models. These results suggested that the FeS@Ti 3 C 2 T x nanocomposites could be an efficient scavenger for environmental remediation.

Enhanced performance for total Cr removal using a novel h-BN supported nanoscale iron sulfide composite: stabilization effects and removal mechanism

Li Li,Junjie Chen,Guodong Sheng,Yixin Pan,Xiaojie Guo

In this study, a novel nanocomposite (FeS@h-BN) that FeS nanoparticles anchored onto h-BN nanosheets was synthesized for chromium (Cr(VI)) removal in aqueous solutions and characterized by SEM, TEM , XRD , FTIR, Zeta, and XPS . The effect of removal parameters including initial pH, temperature, FeS@h-BN dosage, the initial concentration of Cr(VI) and contact time were investigated. Experiment results revealed that h-BN as a stabilizer for FeS had good stability and effectively reduced FeS agglomeration. The remarkable performance of removing total Cr in aqueous solution was obtained by effectively converting Cr(VI) to Cr(III) on FeS and simultaneously adsorbing Cr(III) on h-BN. The adsorption capacity of FeS@h-BN for Cr(VI) was extremely sensitive to the pH and the optimum adsorption was 399.72 mg/g at pH of 1.0. In addition, the efficiency of removing Cr(VI) by FeS@h-BN increased with the increase of adsorbent dosage and Cr(VI) concentration, and the efficiency reached 100% at an adsorbent dosage of 0.30 g/L. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model can fully explain the experimental rate data. The mechanism of FeS@h-BN to remove Cr(VI) was adsorption and chemical reduction, of which chemical adsorption was the main one. These results revealed that h-BN as a stabilizer can improve the FeS stability and reactivity for the rapid removal of Cr(VI) contamination in water solution.

Micro-nano FeS-flower-decorated rGO nanosheets for enhanced catechol biosensing

Yifan Sun,Xuantong Gan,Bingrui Tong,Xiaoyue Yao,Hui Liu

Phenolic compounds, including catechol, pose significant environmental threats due to their high toxicity and low biodegradability. However, owing to the complex procedures, high cost, and low specificity of the present detection techniques, the on-site and real-time monitoring of catechol in real water remain challenging for practical use. In this work, we developed a FeS-rGO micro-nanocomposite-based biosensor for trace catechol detection in water. The material was engineered through a hydrothermal and oriented self-assembly approach that enabled in-situ growth of flower-like FeS on rGO, effectively preventing FeS agglomeration and enhancing interfacial integration. This designed structure synergistically combines the high surface area of FeS with the conductivity of rGO, promoting efficient electron transfer and catalytic activity. After laccase immobilization, the biosensor exhibits high selectivity for catechol against interfering phenols, with a sensitivity of 253 μA·mM −1 ·cm −2 and a broad linear range from 10 nM to 8.12 mM, which demonstrates potential application in the early-warning and treatment of environmental pollutant leakage.

Emergent Magnetic Order in Superconducting FeS Induced by Trace Cr Doping

Yangzhou Wang,Qianshuo Wang,Yanhao Dong,Jin Wang,Shu Chen,Zihan Wang,Fei Chen,Guixin Cao,Wei Ren,Jie Li,Wen Wan

Multiband and nodal-like superconductivity (SC) with s- + d-wave pairing symmetry have implied that tetragonal iron sulphide (FeS) is a distinctive testbed for exploring unexpected electronic correlations. In particular, the low-moment disordered static magnetism originating from the Fe moment leads to the possibility of the coexistence of magnetic orders (MOs) in the superconducting ground state via the tuning of electronic configurations. Here, guided by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we found that slightly substitutionally doped chromium (Cr) atoms in tetragonal FeS single crystals can induce both considerable d-orbital reconstruction around the Fermi surface and a local magnetic moment of 2.4µBat each doping site, which could highly modulate the SC ground states of the host. On this basis, a clear magnetic transition and reduced anisotropy of SC were experimentally observed. In particular, SC can survive with a doping content below 0.05. This coexistence of SC and MOs suggests strong spin correlations between Cr dopants and the host through exchange coupling. Further, an electronic temperature-related phase diagram of FeS with Cr doping contents from 0 to 0.07 is also provided. These results demonstrate that the continuous injection of local moments can be a controllable method to use to tune collective orders in unconventional iron-based superconductors.

Phosphate-Induced Acidic Microenvironment for Improved Contaminant Removal during FeS Oxygenation

Rongrong Ding,Junsheng Song,Guangyu Bi,Guannan Zhou,Xiaocheng Liu,Dahong Huang,Yang Mu

The coexistence of mackinawite (FeS) and phosphate is widely observed in natural systems. However, the underlying mechanism regarding how phosphate influences the environmental behavior of FeS, especially during the FeS oxygenation in aquatic systems, remains in its fancy. This study for the first time reported that the presence of phosphate, even at a low concentration of 0.3 mM, significantly promoted the FeS-mediated O2 activation and thus the pollutant degradation. The enhancement was attributed to a substantial increase in the generation of •OH, as evidenced by the electron paramagnetic resonance tests and the identification of the probing products. A combination of experiments and theoretical calculations revealed that phosphate adsorbed onto the FeS surface via a monodentate mononuclear configuration, establishing an acidic microenvironment on the FeS surface. Such acidic microenvironment not only increased the utilization efficiency of Fe(II) toward H2O2 generation (i.e., O2+2H++2Fe(II)→H2O2+2Fe(III)O2+2H++2Fe(II)→H2O2+2Fe(III)), but also prevented the subsequent side reaction of H2O2 self-decomposition (i.e., H2O2+OH−→HO−2+H2OH2O2+OH−→HO2−+H2O). The results highlight the beneficial role of commonly encountered phosphate in FeS-based systems, which has profound implications for the degradation of waterborne contaminants.

FeS embedded bioreactor collaborate with artesunate for cascade-catalytic tumor ferroptosis

Xiaoyu Wang,Chunzhe Xu,Hantao Tian,Yu Pang,Jie Lv,Meng Li

Ferroptosis, a non-apoptotic programmed cell death modality, has been recognized as an emerging therapeutic target for cancer treatment, particularly with the rapid advancements in bionanotechnology. However, the insufficient intracellular Fe 2+ ions and low reactive oxygen species (ROS) production severely restrict the efficacy of ferroptosis at tumor sites. Herein, a pH-responsive multifunctional nanoplatform (p-COF@GOx-FeS@HA/ART) was constructed to achieve efficient tumor ferroptosis through self-supplied Fe 2+ ions and amplified ROS. In this system, the large specific surface area and mesoporous structure enabled the porphyrin-based covalent organic frameworks (p-COFs) to act as scaffolds and drug carriers for enhancing the catalytic activity of glucose oxidase-stabilized ferrous sulfide nanodots (GOx@FeS) and encapsulation of artesunate (ART). By oxidizing glucose (Glu) in tumor cells, GOx not only consumed Glu for starvation therapy but also promoted intracellular acidity and supplied hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) in the tumor microenvironment (TME), which facilitated the FeS-mediated chemodynamic therapy (CDT) as well as the release of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) for accelerating the ROS generation. Moreover, the lowered acidic TME could simultaneously trigger the release of ART and Fe 2+ ions, thus exacerbating ART-mediated ferroptosis. Due to its photothermal and photodynamic behavior, the nanoplatform under laser irradiation could generate ROS storms in tumor cells for high-performance ferroptosis therapy, which was demonstrated both in cancer cells and tumor-bearing mice. This work provides a promising strategy for the simple construction of a multifunctional nanoplatform with TME-responsive and self-triggered ferroptosis, showing great potential in cascade amplification of ferroptosis therapy.

Performance evaluation of zero-valent iron nanoparticles (NZVI) for high-concentration H2S removal from biogas at different temperatures

Lianghu Su,Chenwei Liu,Kangkang Liang,Yudong Chen,Longjiang Zhang,Xiaolin Li,Zhihua Han,Guangyin Zhen,Xiaoli Chai,Xu Sun

The removal performance of high-concentration H2S (ca. 10 000 ppm) from simulated biogas by zero-valent iron nanoparticles (NZVI), with the majority of the particles in the size range of 60–150 nm, at different reaction temperatures (room temperature, 100 °C, 200 °C and 250 °C) were evaluated using a custom-designed quartz fixed-bed reactor. The results showed that the H2S removal capacities of NZVI were quite limited at room temperature and 100 °C, being 12.56 and 14.77 mg H2S gNZVI−1, respectively. However, these values increased significantly to 391.02 (200 °C) and 488.95 (250 °C) mg H2S gNZVI−1. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that the products of the NZVI–H2S reaction aggregated to form irregular polygonal-shaped structures. The main X-ray diffraction pattern peaks of the product matched well with troilite, and no pyrite was observed. The deconvolution of the X-ray photoelectron spectrometry peaks showed the presence of monosulphide (S2−) and disulphide (S22−) in the product, in which 36% of the sulphur existed as monosulphide and 64% as disulphide. It is proposed that the effective removal of hydrogen sulphide by NZVI at elevated temperatures can be attributed to the combination of nano-constituents, oxide shell and underlying Fe core to produce FeS similar to troilite and amorphous FeS2.

Biochar-Supported FeS/Fe3O4 Composite for Catalyzed Fenton-Type Degradation of Ciprofloxacin

Yue Wang,Xiaoxiao Zhu,Dongqing Feng,Anthony K. Hodge,Liujiang Hu,Jinhong Lü,Jianfa Li

The Fenton-type oxidation catalyzed by iron minerals is a cost-efficient and environment-friendly technology for the degradation of organic pollutants in water, but their catalytic activity needs to be enhanced. In this work, a novel biochar-supported composite containing both iron sulfide and iron oxide was prepared, and used for catalytic degradation of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin through Fenton-type reactions. Dispersion of FeS/Fe3O4nanoparticles was observed with scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Formation of ferrous sulfide (FeS) and magnetite (Fe3O4) in the composite was validated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Ciprofloxacin (initial concentration = 20 mg/L) was completely degraded within 45 min in the system catalyzed by this biochar-supported magnetic composite at a dosage of 1.0 g/L. Hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were proved to be the major reactive species contributing to the degradation reaction. The biochar increased the production of ·OH, but decreased the consumption of H2O2, and helped transform Fe3+into Fe2+, according to the comparison studies using the unsupported FeS/Fe3O4as the catalyst. All the three biochars prepared by pyrolysis at different temperatures (400, 500 and 600 °C) were capable for enhancing the reactivity of the iron compound catalyst. Keywords:biochar;iron mineral;heterogeneous catalysts;antibiotic;advanced oxidation processes;water treatment;organic pollutants;Fenton reactions

Immobilization of mercury (II) from aqueous solution using Al2O3-supported nanoscale FeS

Yue Sun,Zimo Lou,Jianbing Yu,Xiaoxin Zhou,Dan Lv,Jiasheng Zhou,Shams Ali Baig,Xinhua Xu

Iron sulfide (FeS) nanoparticles were known for their excellent ability to scavenge aqueous Hg(II). However, the aggregation and oxidizability of FeS nanoparticles greatly restricted their practical application. This study developed an Al 2 O 3 -supported nanoscale FeS (FeS/Al 2 O 3 ) which effectively optimized the material performance. Characteristic data suggested that FeS/Al 2 O 3 (mass ratio of FeS to FeS/Al 2 O 3 is 30%) with a large specific surface area (142.7   m 2   g −1 ) could evenly distribute FeS, suppressing the aggregation of FeS successfully. The maximum enrichment capacity of Hg(II) on FeS/Al 2 O 3 achieved ∼313   mg/g at pH 6 and 30   °C. The pH studies indicated that alkaline environment strongly inhibited mercury uptake, while removal rate of 1   mg/L Hg(II) maintained a high level (>97.5%) over the pH range of 3–9. However, FeS/Al 2 O 3 loss was observed at low pH due to the acid corrosion. Additionally, the rates of Hg(II) reduction were almost unaffected over the range of 0.1–100   mM NaCl, but greatly inhibited by the presence of humid acid (HA). The synthetic FeS/Al 2 O 3 remained high mercury removal efficiency (over 95% in 1   mg/L Hg(II)) and low iron dissolution rate when preserved for 30   days, showing good long-term stability and remarkable application potential.

Degradation of PCB77 in spiked soils by ferrous sulfide-activated persulfate combined with potassium permanganate

Yue Bu,Nannan Wu,Yumeng Qi,Junyan Wei,Xiaosheng Tang,Ahmed A Allam,Ping Sun,Zunyao Wang,Ruijuan Qu

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in soil are difficult to remove by biodegradation, photodegradation and other conventional oxidation methods. This work tried to use FeS-activated persulfate (PS) combined with permanganate (KMnO 4 ) to treat PCBs contaminated soil using 3,3′,4,4′-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB77) as a model pollutant. Compared with Fe 0 /PS and KMnO 4 /PS systems, the FeS/PS system showed a stronger degradation effect on PCB77. After reacting for 4 h in FeS/PS system, the addition of KMnO 4 could increase the degradation efficiency of PCB77 from 50.27% to 79.20% in a total reaction time of 8 h. In FeS/PS/KMnO 4 system, the degradation efficiency of PCB77 was directly proportional to the concentration of FeS, and greater amount of PCB77 was removed when more spiked soils were treated. Based on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and radical quenching experiments, •OH, SO 4 • - , 1 O 2 and O 2 • - were determined to play an important role in the oxidation of PCB77. Combined with identified intermediates and theoretical calculations, six main possible reaction pathways were proposed, including dechlorination , hydroxyl substitution, hydroxyl addition, sulfate substitution, sulfate addition, and C-C bridge bond cleavage. Acute toxicity and bioconcentration factors of intermediate products were predicted by T.E.S.T software, and the results showed that the ecotoxicity of PCB77 in soil was effectively reduced during the FeS/PS/KMnO 4 treatment process. This work demonstrated that FeS/PS/KMnO 4 system is applicable to treat PCB77 contaminated soil and has a great potential for soil remediation .

Degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in water by persulfate activated with FeS (mackinawite)

Hai Chen,Zhonglei Zhang,Mingbao Feng,Wei Liu,Wenjing Wang,Qi Yang,Yuanan Hu

In this study, mackinawite (FeS) was prepared and used as the heterogeneous catalyst to activate persulfate (PS) for 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) degradation, and impact factors including initial pH, PS concentration, FeS dosage, reaction temperature and inorganic anions (Cl − , NO 3 − , and HCO 3 − ), were investigated. The results showed that 2,4-D could be efficiently degraded and mineralized by FeS/PS system. Acidic pH would accelerate 2,4-D degradation, whereas neutral and alkaline conditions showed negative effects. The degradation efficiency of 2,4-D was improved with increasing FeS dosage, PS concentration and reaction temperature. Furthermore, inorganic anions exerted different effects on 2,4-D degradation. The quenching experiments indicated that though both sulfate radicals (SO 4 − ) and hydroxyl radicals (HO ) were responsible for 2,4-D degradation, HO played a more important role. Based on the quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, the possible mechanism of 2,4-D oxidation in FeS/PS system was proposed. Additionally, the reusability tests revealed that, although FeS had a short time of deactivation after first use, it still maintained satisfactory catalytic activity in five consecutive 2,4-D degradation experiments. The transformation intermediates were identified by a gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and the possible reaction pathways were proposed based on the measured results. The method of activating PS with FeS may offer great benefits for the application of iron-containing mineral in remediation of herbicide-contaminated water.

Rational Surface Oxidation Promoted Long-Term Cd(II) Removal Performance of Mackinawite (FeS)

Shiyu Cao,Lin Zhang,Cancan Ling,Furong Guo,Meiqi Li,Chuan Liang,Jundi Cheng,Yanbiao Shi,Hongwei Sun,Lizhi Zhang

Mackinawite (FeS) is an excellent Cd(II) removal material but suffers from rapid reactivity loss. Herein, we demonstrate that rational surface preoxidation could enhance the single maximum adsorption capacity of mackinawite from 625.0 to 666.7 mg g–1 and also promote its air stability and reusability for long-term application. The Cd(II) removal processes were carefully characterized with a multifunctional in situ electrochemical device, theoretical calculation, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Characterization results revealed that surface preoxidation treatment changed the Cd(II) removal mechanism from ion exchange to ion-exchange coupled surface adsorption because surface preoxidized FeS possessed abundant surface −OH sites. This extra surface adsorption process offered surface preoxidized FeS a superior long-term Cd(II) removal performance of 1290.5 mg g–1 in 5 successive cycles, much higher than that of pristine FeS (842.4 mg g–1). This study highlights the importance of surface oxidation on the Cd(II) removal performance of mackinawite and also opens a new strategy to design and produce high-performance mackinawite nanocrystals for pollutant control and environmental remediation.
