Facile Access to Guar Gum Based Supramolecular Hydrogels with Rapid Self-Healing Ability and Multistimuli Responsive Gel–Sol Transitions

Nan Li,Chuanjie Liu,Wei Chen

In this work, we prepare guar gum-based supramolecular hydrogel through the formation of borate/didiol bonds. This dynamic and reversible noncovalent borate/didiol interaction is critical for the multifunctional properties of supramolecular hydrogel. The FT-IR and XRD analysis verified the existence of boronate ester interactions between borax and guar gum. Moreover, the viscoelastic and mechanical behaviors of the hydrogels with different guar gum concentrations showed that the storage modulus and compressive stress were highest at guar gum concentration of 2 wt %. Besides, due to the dynamic and reservable properties of boronate ester, these guar gum-based hydrogels had excellent self-healing property, outstanding reformable and injectable capability. In addition, hydrogels also exhibited reversible gel–sol transformations by the application of physicochemical stimuli such as thermal and pH value. The coupling of these multifunctional properties made from low-cost, environment friendly, and readily available materials could have potential applications in many biomedical areas in the future. We expect that this simple strategy of fabricating the self-healing guar gum hydrogels with multistimuli responsive properties may enrich the avenue in the exploration of multifunctional guar gum based hydrogels to expand their potential applications in various fields.

Oral delivery of curcumin via multi-bioresponsive polyvinyl alcohol and guar gum based double-membrane microgels for ulcerative colitis therapy

Yan Hu,Shangwen Zhang,Zhijie Wen,Hudie Fu,Jie Hu,Xuexin Ye,Li Kang,Xiaojun Li,Xinzhou Yang

Anti-inflammatory drugs for ulcerative colitis (UC) treatment should specifically penetrate and accumulate in the colon tissue. Herein, a multi-bioresponsive anti-inflammatory drug (curcumin, CUR)-loaded heterogeneous double-membrane microgels ( [email protected] ) for oral administration was fabricated in this study, in which the inner core was derived from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and guar gum (GG) and the outer gel was decoration with alginate and chitosan by polyelectrolyte interactions. The structure and morphology of microgels were characterized. In vitro, the formulation exhibited good bio-responses at different pH conditions and sustained-release properties in simulated colon fluid with a drug-release rate of 84.6 % over 34 h. With the assistance of the outlayer gels, the microgels effectively delayed the premature drug release of CUR in the upper gastrointestinal tract. In vivo studies revealed that [email protected] specifically accumulated in the colon tissue for 24 h, which suggest that the interlayer gels were apt to reach colon lesion. As expected, the oral administration of microgels remarkably alleviated the symptoms of UC and protected the colon tissue in DSS-induced UC mice. The above results indicated that these facilely fabricated microgels which exhibited excellent biocompatibility and multi-bioresponsive drug release, had an apparent effect on the treatment of UC, which represents a promising drug delivery strategy for CUR in a clinical application.

Preparation of biobased guar gum polyelectrolyte complex coatings by sol-gel method for improving the flame retardancy of ramie fabrics

Wenjian Li,Fubin Luo,Yumei Dai,Denglong Chen,Hongzhou Li

In this study, to improve the flame-retardant properties of ramie fabrics (RFs), a polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) was prepared in a one-step process using biobased guar gum (GG), polyethyleneimine (PEI), and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and deposited on the surface of the RF to construct an intumescent flame-retardant coating. Fabrics treated with PEC coatings exhibited excellent flame-retardant properties. Specifically, the cone calorimeter test results revealed that an increase in sample weight of only 13.23 wt% resulted in significant reductions in the peak heat release rate (pHRR), total heat release (THR), and fire growth rate (FGR) of 91.37%, 65.12%, and 95.28%, respectively. Additionally, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) increased from 19.4% to 33.5%, and the fabrics self-extinguished immediately after the ignition source was removed during the UL-94 test. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the char residue revealed expansion bubbles on the surface, suggesting that the PEC coating provides flame retardancy through a synergistic effect involving both the gas phase and the condensed phase. This study provides a simple and convenient solution for realizing green and efficient flame-retardant coatings on RF.

Rapid synthesis of nano-sized Beta zeolite via guar gum assistance: Tailoring particle morphology for improved diffusion in lactide production

Ziyuan Qiao,Jianbin Huang,Xiaoyuan Qin,Jindong Qu,Jian Zhang

Beta zeolite serves as a crucial catalyst for the direct one-step synthesis of lactide from lactic acid, yet its application encounters persistent challenges including prolonged synthesis duration and excessive crystal ripening, which substantially compromise the efficient and high-quality production of zeolites at industrial scale. To address this, we developed a rapid hydrothermal synthesis route at 180 °C, employing an inexpensive bio-derived polysaccharide, guar gum, as a crystal growth modulator. By systematically optimizing key parameters (guar gum/SiO 2 ratio, aging temperature/duration, crystallization time), we successfully tailored the zeolite's texture. The introduction of guar gum effectively suppressed Ostwald ripening, yielding Beta zeolite with significantly reduced primary crystal size (<100 nm) and developed intercrystalline porosity within a remarkably short period of 8 hours. Compared to a rapidly synthesized counterpart without guar gum, the optimized catalyst exhibited a substantially higher specific surface area (586 vs. 384 m 2 g –1 ) and a mesopore population centered at 20–60 nm. In the conversion of lactic acid to lactide, this nano-structured catalyst delivered a markedly higher lactide yield of 79.2%, a 51% improvement over the control sample (52.5%). Gel permeation chromatography and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed that the tailored particle architecture shortened diffusion paths, effectively mitigating oligomer overpolymerization and coking. This work provides a facile and scalable strategy for controlling zeolite crystal growth at the nanoscale, demonstrating the significant impact of particle morphology engineering on catalytic process efficiency.

Influence of xanthan gum and guar gum on the gelation and structural properties of carboxylated cellulose nanofibers-based emulsion gels

Yanyan Cheng,Jieqiong Lin,Yi Luo,Jinzhou Xiao,Weiqi Fei,Jiajun Song,Huiliang Wen,Jianhua Xie

This study investigated the use of carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CCNF) as stabilizers, for fabricating emulsion gels and the effects of adding hydrophilic colloids (xanthan gum, XG and guar gum, GG) on the properties of the CCNF emulsion. XG and GG are anionic and neutral polysaccharides, respectively. As anionic cellulose derivatives, CCNF has a synergistic effect with XG through electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding, whereas interactions with GG are formed mainly through hydrogen bonding and physical entanglement. These two different molecular interaction mechanisms result in a composite emulsion gel system with a stable three-dimensional network structure. Results indicated that the addition of XG/GG significantly enhanced the storage modulus (G′) and loss modulus (G″), and improved the gel strength, hardness and fracture elongation. The emulsion gels exhibited markedly improved water-holding capacity (WHC) and freeze-thaw (F-T) stability, and the WHC after freezing and thawing increased to 78 %–97 % with the addition of XG and GG at various concentrations. These findings demonstrated the promising potential of CCNF-stabilized emulsion gels incorporating XG and GG and provide a basis for expanding the use of CCNF emulsion gels.

Solution Properties of a Composite System Containing Dynamic Borate Ester Bonds Formed by a Guar Gum and Polyboric Acid Compounds

Hongzhi Zhao,Bin Chen,Lin Zhang,Xiaoyue Zhang,Qingqing Tang,Ming Duan,Shenwen Fang

Polymer systems containing dynamic covalent bonds have great application potential in the field of enhanced oil recovery. In this paper a series of polyboric acid compounds were synthesized by using polyamine and formylbenzeneboronic acid as raw materials, and then a binary composite system containing dynamic borate ester bonds was formed by mixing guar gum with the polyboric acid compound. The effects of the polyboric acid compound structure, composite system concentration, temperature, inorganic salt concentration and pH on the apparent viscosity and rheological properties of the composite system solution were investigated. The results showed that the higher the content of boric acid groups in the polyboric acid compound, the greater the solution viscosity of the composite system. The apparent viscosity of the guar gum solution increased from 350 mPa.s to 1854 mPa.s at room temperature, the highest value obtained, when the guar gum was mixed with a polyboric acid compound formed by the reaction of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and 2-formylphenylboric acid (2-FPBA) at a molar ratio of 1:4.5. Temperature and pH had a great influence on the apparent viscosity of the composite system, whereas NaCl addition had little effect on the apparent viscosity of the composite system. In addition, the rheological test results showed that the composite system had good shear resistance and structural elasticity, which meets the basic requirements of a polymer flooding agent used for enhanced oil recovery.

Effect of dry-heat and guar gum on properties of egg white powder: Analysis of forming capacity and baking performance

Cuihua Chang,Yali Xu,Mingcheng Shi,Yujie Su,Xin Li,Junhua Li,Yanjun Yang

The effects of dry-heat treatment (75 °C, 0–20 d) and guar gum (GG) composition on foaming properties and baking performance of egg white powder (EWP) were investigated. Rheological measurement showed that both dry-heat treatment and GG addition can improve the viscosity of EWP dispersion. The particle diameter of EWP dispersion decreased after dry-heat treatment, while hydrophobicity increased, indicating that the increased viscosity was caused by the enhanced hydrophobic interaction rather than particle induced steric hindrance. The sample undergoing 10 days of dry heating with GG addition performed the best foaming properties (foaming capacity 9.37 ± 0.26 mL/g and foaming stability 96 ± 1.56%). However, without GG addition, 10 days of dry heating just induced the foaming capacity and stability increasing from 5.17 ± 0.65 mL/g and 42.85 ± 2.90% to 6.96 ± 0.09 mL/g and 64.95 ± 3.04%, respectively. The sample EWP 10 + GG also exhibited the largest cake specific volume and uniform distribution of foams in cross section, which was observed in all three baking systems (low, middle and high sugar). In low sugar system, GG addition induced an increase in cake specific volume from 3.72 ± 0.02 mL/g to 4.55 ± 0.16 mL/g. The results revealed that combining dry-heat and GG addition can more effectively enhance foaming capacity and baking performance of EWP powder, providing guidance for its efficient application in baking industry.

Borate crosslinking synthesis of structure tailored carbon-based bifunctional electrocatalysts directly from guar gum hydrogels for efficient overall water splitting

Yu Cheng,Kanglei Pang,Xiaohui Xu,Pengfei Yuan,Zhiguo Zhang,Xiao Wu,Lirong Zheng,Jianan Zhang,Rui Song

Given the efficiency, stability and sustainability, the carbon-based materials have become one of promising bifunctional electrocatalysts to the electrochemical water splitting, involving hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, there are still many challenges about the design and mechanism study of the carbon-based electrocatalysts. In this paper, we reported B, N co-doping carbon nanosheets which were synthesized via cationic intercalation stripping guar gum carbon aerogels pre-crosslinked by borate , B(OH) 4 - . This facile strategy not only realizes the structure tailoring, but also concurrently improves the doping efficiency and the stability of the hetero atoms. Specifically, the cost-efficient carbon-based bifunctional catalyst (B5/GCS) shows an outstanding HER and OER performance displaying a remarkable activity both in acidic and alkaline media , low onset potentials for both HER (39.12 mV) and OER (1.38 V) in the same electrolyte (0.5 M H 2 SO 4 ). Notably, when employed as the bifunctional electrocatalysts with a two-electrode electrolyzer for water splitting, the B5/GCS generated a cell voltage of 1.45 V to attain 10 mA cm −2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . Furthermore, a series of experiments combining density functional theory calculations revealed that the observed superb water splitting activity could be attributed to a synergistic effect of N, B co-doping and the formation of fragmented nanosheets with topological defects, which collaboratively promotes the proton adsorption and catalytic kinetics.

Lemon-derived carbon quantum dots incorporated guar gum/sodium alginate films with enhanced the preservability for blanched asparagus active packaging

Jianing Zhang,Junjun Zhang,Xiaowei Huang,Xiaodong Zhai,Zhihua Li,Jiyong Shi,Remah Sobhy,Ibrahim Khalifa,Xiaobo Zou

Minimally processed fruits and vegetables (MPFVs) experience significant quality degradation during storage due to oxygen exposure, mechanical damage, and microbial contamination, which significantly reduces shelf life and leads to substantial economic waste. This research developed a cost-effective and environmentally active packaging by incorporating carbon quantum dots (CQDs) derived from lemons into guar gum (GG) and sodium alginate (SA) films. The CQDs were integrated into the biopolymer matrix via simple film-casting techniques. The CQDs exhibited exceptional antioxidant and antibacterial properties due to the abundant functional groups and unique quantum effects. The integration of CQDs into GG/SA films enhanced UV-blocking capabilities, mechanical strength (38.80 MPa), and antioxidant activity (43.45%). The release kinetics of CQDs from the films followed the Fickian diffusion kinetics. The use of CQDs offers several advantages over conventional methods including their biocompatibility, sustainability, and multifunctionality. Additionally, the films effectively delayed the browning of blanched asparagus. The mechanism of browning inhibition was attributed to the prevention of chlorophyll degradation and enzymatic browning. This approach offers a sustainable and effective solution for extending the shelf life and safety of MPFVs.

Core–Shell Filament with Excellent Wound Healing Property Made of Cellulose Nanofibrils and Guar Gum via Interfacial Polyelectrolyte Complexation Spinning

Meiyan Wu,Yinuo Liu,Chao Liu,Qiu Cui,Xin Zheng,Pedram Fatehi,Bin Li

Natural polymer-based sutures have attractive cytocompatibility and degradability in surgical operations. Herein, anionic cellulose nanofibrils (ACNF) and cationic guar gum (CGG) are employed to produce nontoxic CGG/ACNF composite filament with a unique core–shell structure via interfacial polyelectrolyte complexation (IPC) spinning. The comprehensive characterization and application performance of the resultant CGG/ACNF filament as a surgical suture are thoroughly investigated in comparison with silk and PGLA (90% glycolide and 10% l -lactide) sutures in vitro and in vivo, respectively. Results show that the CGG/ACNF filament with the typical core–shell structure and nervation pattern surface exhibits a high orientation index (0.74) and good mechanical properties. The tensile strength and knotting strength of CGG/ACNF suture prepared by twisting CGG/ACNF filaments increase by 69.5%, and CGG/ACNF suture has a similar friction coefficient to silk and PGLA sutures. Moreover, CGG/ACNF suture with antibiosis and cytocompatibility exhibits better growth promotion of cells than silk suture, similar to PGLA suture in vitro. In addition, the stitching experiment of mice with the CGG/ACNF suture further confirms better healing properties and less inflammation in vivo than silk and PGLA sutures do. Hence, the CGG/ACNF suture with a simple preparation method and excellent application properties is promising in surgical operations.

Partially hydrolyzed guar gum attenuates broad-spectrum antibiotic-induced gut microbiota disruption associated with intestinal inflammation and barrier damage in mice

Tong Liu,Yingying Du,Danqi Jiang,Wei Jiang,Lijie Ma,Junjie Wang,Sheng Wang

As a prebiotic fiber produced through partial enzymatic hydrolysis of guar gum seeds, partially hydrolyzed guar gum (PHGG) alters gut microbiota and metabolites, offering health advantages to the individual. Studies on the modulatory effect of PHGG on antibiotic-induced intestinal flora disorders are scarce. We investigated the protective effects of PHGG against intestinal inflammation and intestinal barrier damage induced by broad-spectrum antibiotics, as well as its role in promoting the recovery of antibiotic-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis. C57BL/6J mice were administered PHGG for one or two weeks together with the oral administration of antibiotics to create a model of intestinal dysbiosis. After one week of PHGG treatment, improvement in inflammation and the intestinal barrier was not evident despite changes in the intestinal flora. However, after a fortnight of therapy, the diversity of the intestinal flora increased significantly and was closer to normal flora, the relative abundance of helpful bacteria surged, the production of excessive proinflammatory cytokines was inhibited, the generation of anti-inflammatory cytokines was promoted, the intestinal secretory barrier and epithelial cell barrier were significantly restored, and the antibiotic-induced symptoms, such as weight loss and diarrhea, were corrected. The findings showed that PHGG attenuates antibiotic-induced intestinal barrier damage and inflammation and induces potentially beneficial changes in the intestinal microbiota. The results help elucidate PHGG's beneficial effects on host-microbial interactions and offer the possibility of clinical application of PHGG as a nutrient to attenuate the adverse effects of antibiotics on the intestinal tract.

Teng Chen,Xin Li,Qiyuan Wang,Ye Li,Le Xu,Yihang Yang,Yunfan Qiao,Yuchen Dai,Jie Ke,Hongri Wan,Shuai Zhou,Zhaojian Gao

The frequently encountered wastewater contaminations, including soluble aromatic compound and dye pollutants, pathogenic bacteria, and insoluble oils, have resulted in significant environmental and human health issues. It poses a challenge to utilize identical materials for the treatment of complex wastewater. Herein, in this research, multifunctional Ag NPs/guar gum hybrid hydrogels were fabricated using a facile in situ reduction and self-crosslinking method for efficient remediation of complex wastewater. The Ag NPs/guar gum hybrid hydrogel showed remarkable remodeling, adhesive, and self-healing characteristics, which was favorable for its versatile applications. The combination of Ag NPs with the guar gum skeleton endowed the hybrid hydrogel with exceptional catalytic activity for reducing aromatic compounds and dye pollutants, as well as remarkable antibacterial efficacy against pathogenic bacteria. In addition, the Ag NPs/guar gum hybrid hydrogel could be employed to coat a variety of substrates, including cotton fabrics and stainless steel meshes. The hydrogel coated cotton fabrics and meshes presented superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity, excellent antifouling capacity, and outstanding recyclability, which could be successfully applied for efficient separation of oil-water mixtures. The findings of this work provide a feasible and cost-effective approach for the remediation of intricate wastewater.
