The recycling of diamond wire cutting silicon waste (DWCSW) and the removal of heavy metal ions are very important for human life. Therefore, it is a promising method to improve the selective removal of heavy metal ions by etching and modifying organic functional groups for DWCSW. In this study, a new adsorbent PA-TEPA-GTS-NPSi was synthesized by Cu-assisted chemical etching and modified with 3-glycine dioxy-propyl trimethoxy-silane (3-GTS), tetraethylpentenediamine (TEPA) and hypophosphorous acid (H 3 PO 2 ) for selective adsorption Hg(Ⅱ). PA-TEPA-GTS-NPSi showed excellent adsorption performance on Hg(Ⅱ), with adsorption capacity of 112.8 mg/g (pH=2.0, adsorption time=120 min). The pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model can better describe the adsorption process , which proving that the adsorption process is chemisorption . The adsorption mechanism of Hg(Ⅱ) was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT). It was proved that the adsorption process was mainly caused by the strong adsorption between P and Hg(Ⅱ) in the phosphorus groups on the surface of PA-TEPA-GTS-NPSi adsorbent. Compared with other hypophosphorous acid functionalized adsorbents, the adsorption performance of the adsorbent is at a medium level, but it can effectively recycle DWCSW while removing heavy metal ions.

A sensitive and specific competitive electrochemical immunosensor for the detection of Hg (II) using a modified electrode based on molybdenum disulfide/reduced graphene oxide/gold (MoS2/rGO/Au) nanocomposites was developed in this study. The nanocomposites were characterized and assembled with an antibody against Hg (II) for the immunosensor, demonstrating good electrical activity, high affinity and high specificity. Free Hg (II) in a solution can be measured by the competitive reaction of the Hg element in the sample and the antigen with the antibody fixed on the electrode. A differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) method was used, and the competitive current changed in accordance with the concentration of Hg (II). Under optimal conditions, the sensor showed a linear relationship from 0.1 to 600 ng/mL, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 63 pg/mL. The proposed immunosensor showed an acceptable recovery from 98.4% to 100.3% in spiked samples. Satisfactory stability and reproducibility were obtained. Competitive species, including Zn (II), Mg (II), Al (III), Cu (II), Pb (II), Ba (II), Cd (II), Ag (I), MNA, CH3Hg (I) and CH3Hg-MNA, were selected and applied according to the procedure of the assay, and their significantly different response compared to Hg (II) indicated that the assay displayed not only high sensitivity but also high selectivity. This immunosensor offers a useful model for the detection of Hg (II).

The key to removing and detecting trace Hg (II) in water is to achieve rapid adsorption and high adsorption capacity of the adsorbent while maintaining the simplicity and safety of the adsorbent preparation process. Herein, we report a post-modification of covalent organic frameworks by medical antidote dimercaprol (DMC-COF) for efficacious removing and detection on trace Hg (II) in water. The as-prepared DMC-COF showed excellent selectivity to trace Hg (II) and fast adsorption dynamics, which was attributed to the abundance of sulfhydryl and hydroxyl sorption sites in the COF mesopores and on the COF surface. The effluent concentration of Hg(II) coexisting with Ca(II) reduced from 30 μg·L −1 to the permissible limit (1 μg·L −1 ) of potable water standard within 30 s. The sorption equilibrium was achieved during 3 min and the adsorption rate reached over 98 %. The material also showed a wide applicable pH range (3.5–9.5), excellent regeneration feasibility and selectivity of Hg(II) coexisting with a wide range of heavy metals in tap water, and the effluent concentration of Hg(II) coexisting with trace of As(V), Cr(VI), Cd(II) and Pb(II) could reduce from 30 to 0.19 μg·L −1 during 10 min. Moreover, Hg(II) of 3, 6, 10 and 30 μg·L −1 in tap water could be achieved to meet the WHO standard within 1 min. Meanwhile, its conjugated framework could be used as a signal sensor for rapid testing for low concentration Hg(II) in water, with a fluorescence detection limit of 1.06 mg·L −1 . DFT calculations yielded the optimized structure of DMC grafted onto COF-V, revealing that Hg²⁺ and Hg(OH)₂ primarily adsorbed at the -S and -SH sites, predominantly through van der Waals interaction, whereas Hg(OH)⁺ mainly adsorbed at all the -S, -SH and -OH sites, governed by notable attraction.

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic metal of great concern, and its reduction from Hg(II) to Hg(0) is crucial to prevent its mobilization and transformation to even more hazardous methylmercury. Fe° could reduce Hg(II), but the role of active hydrogen species (*H) remains unexplored. Herein, we prepared the phosphate-modified zero-valent iron by ball milling (P-ZVI bm ) and investigated its Hg(II) reduction and immobilization capacity compared with the ZVI bm counterpart. P-ZVI bm rapidly adsorbed and reduced Hg(II) from water at a rate 22 times faster than ZVI bm , with *H accounting for 36% of Hg(II) reduction. A greatly higher proportion of negative surface electrostatic potential on P-ZVI bm (50.38%) than ZVI bm (37.61%) facilitated the adsorption of Hg(II) cation. H 2 O adsorption on P-ZVI bm was more favorable, as demonstrated by the in situ ATR-FTIR spectra, H 2 O TPD-mass spectra, and the substantially lower adsorption energy (-0.78 eV) than ZVI bm (-0.17 eV). The energy span of H 2 O dissociation to *H also decreased from 2.80 eV on ZVI bm to 1.99 eV on P-ZVI bm . Moreover, *H adsorption energy on P-ZVI bm (1.70 eV) was lower than on ZVI bm (-1.20 eV), thereby inhibiting consumption of *H by H 2 evolution. P-ZVI bm demonstrated remarkable efficacy in removing Hg(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) from electroplating and mining wastewater. These results highlight P-ZVI bm as a promising material for Hg(II) and other heavy metal remediation and underscore the essential role of *H in the enhanced Hg(II) reduction.

Developing efficient adsorbents for removal of organic pollutants and heavy metals is essential for environmental protection. In this study, a series of GO/UiO-66-(OH)2 composites were synthesized and characterized using XRD, FT-IR, and SEM, confirming enhanced thermal stability, reduced aggregation, and maintained crystallinity of UiO-66-(OH)2 due to GO incorporation. Batch adsorption experiments showed that GO increased the adsorption capacity, with GO-8/UiO-66-(OH)2 achieving 324.2 mg/g for diclofenac sodium (DCF) and 429.3 mg/g for Hg2+. DCF adsorption was primarily governed by physisorption, while Hg adsorption was chemisorptive, involving strong coordination with oxygen functional groups. Kinetic and isotherm studies revealed the suitability of the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models, with thermodynamic analysis showing exothermic DCF adsorption and endothermic Hg2+ adsorption. The composites also exhibited high selectivity and stable regeneration, making them promising candidates for practical environmental remediation.

A series of novel adsorption resins were synthesized via the chloromethylation of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) resin and subsequent functional group conversion reaction. Their chemical structure, thermal stability, and morphology were systematically characterized by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersive spectrometer, respectively. The experimental results showed that the thioureido, mercapto, aminopyridine, and quaternary ammonium groups had been respectively introduced into PPS matrix, the functional group content of PPS-based mercapto resin (HS-PPS), aminopyridine resin (AP-PPS), and quaternary ammonium resin (QA-PPS) were about 2.20, 1.71, and 2.61 mmol g −1 , respectively. The adsorptive performance for Hg (II) and As (V) were studied by batch adsorptive method; the adsorption capacities of the HS-PPS and AP-PPS resin for Hg (II) were 210.65 and 169.06 mg g −1 . The adsorption capacity of the QA-PPS resin was 88 mg g −1 for As (V). Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Efficient decontamination of toxic mercury from water remains a critical challenge. MoS 2 nanoadsorbents exhibit significant advantages for mercury capture due to the strong soft-soft interactions between Hg(II) and sulfur. However, conventional MoS 2 nanosheets or MoS 2 -based nanocomposites are often hindered by practical limitations, including difficulty in separation and recovery, pore blockage, nanoparticle leaching, and high pressure drop in flow-through systems. Herein, we report a millimeter-sized nanocomposite (MoS 2 @PDA@CER) fabricated by coating MoS 2 nanosheets onto a cation exchange resin via a polydopamine (PDA) adhesive layer. The millimeter-scale architecture enables easy separation and superior hydraulics for flow-through operation. MoS 2 @PDA@CER exhibits broad pH applicability (1–8), ultra-high adsorption capacity (1168.18 mg/g at pH 5), rapid adsorption kinetics (equilibrium within 1 h), and exceptional selectivity toward Hg(II). These outstanding properties are attributed to the synergy between the unique millimeter-sized structure of the resin support and the strong affinity of MoS 2 for Hg(II). Furthermore, the nanocomposite demonstrates deep purification capability, effectively treating various trace mercury-contaminated waters to meet drinking water standards. It also shows excellent reusability, with no significant loss in adsorption capacity after 10 cycles. In fixed-bed column tests, MoS 2 @PDA@CER successfully treated ∼3000 BV of Hg(II)-spiked wastewater, with effluent complying with the Chinese integrated wastewater discharge standard (50 μg/L); notably, the first 900 BV even met the drinking water standard (1 μg/L). All the results indicate that MoS 2 @PDA@CER is a scalable and efficient adsorbent for the remediation of mercury-contaminated wastewater.

Development of robust methods for rapid detection of heavy metal ions and associated chemical species in water is challenging. Different mercury species are ubiquitous in the environment; they bio-amplify and undergo methylation into organo-Hg species. We developed a new electrochemical method for rapid screening of free Hg 2+ in water by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) on a metal-organic framework (MOF) platform using ZIF-67 as starting substrate. Bimetallic MOF structures were fabricated by doping iron, manganese or nickel ions into ZIF-67 using a facile NaOH treatment. The GCE was modified with Ni, Mn, or Fe doped ZIF-67 nanocomposites to enhance performance for Hg 2+ detection. When compared to pure ZIF-67/GCE, the Hg 2+ detection sensitivity by the metal ions-doped ZIF-67/GCE was increased by 260%. The detection limit was improved by 60%. The Fe doping on ZIF-67 (Fe x Co y ) significantly improves electroanalytical performance due to the formation of iron oxide on ZIF-67. The GCE modified with Fe 1 Co 1 nanocomposite showed the best performance for electrochemical detection of Hg 2+ . Besides, the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS) data also confirmed that Fe doping of the ZIF-67 enhanced the electron transfer rate at the solid-liquid interface. Hg 2+ detection and quantification at this new chemically modified sensing electrode were not interfered by Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ , and Cu 2+ . The Fe 1 Co 1 modified GCE is stable when used repeatedly for ten cycles. The spike recovery of 0.3 to 1.00 µM Hg 2+ with Fe 1 Co 1 modified GCE was always above 99.0%. The chemically modified sensor with Fe 1 Co 1 holds a promise in monitoring Hg 2+ at trace concentrations.

Mercury (Hg) ions can lead to a serious impact on the environment; therefore, it was necessary to find an effective method for absorbing these toxic Hg ions. Here, the adsorbent (Zn-AHMT) was synthesized from zinc nitrate and 4-amino-3-hydrazine-5-mercapto-1,2, 4-triazole (AHMT) by one-step method and, characterized the microstructure and absorption performance by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Thermal Gravimetric Analyzer (TGA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Through a plethora of measurements, we found that the maximum adsorption capacity was 802.8 mg/g when the optimal pH of Zn-AHMT was 3.0. The isothermal and kinetic experiments confirm that the reaction process of Zn-AHMT was chemisorption, while the adsorption process conforms to the Hill model and pseudo second order kinetic model. Thermodynamic experiments showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic. Selective experiments were performed in the simulated wastewater containing Mn, Mg, Cr, Al, Co, Ni, Hg ions. Our results showed that the Zn-AHMT has a stronger affinity for Hg ions. The removal rate of Zn-AHMT remained above 98%, indicating that the Zn-AHMT had a good stability validated by three adsorption-desorption repeatable tests. According to the XPS results, the adsorption reaction of Zn-AHMT was mainly attributed to the chelation and ion exchange. This was further explained by both density functional theory (DFT) calculation and frontier molecular orbital theory. We therefore propose the adsorption mechanism of Zn-AHMT. The adsorption reaction facilitates via the synergistic action of S and N atoms. Moreover, the bonding between the adsorbent and the N atom has been proved to be more stable. Our study demonstrated that Zn-AHMT had a promising application prospect in mercury removal.

In this paper, a functional nanoprobe based on graphene oxide (GO) composites was successfully prepared for detection of mercury ion (Hg(II)) with high sensitivity. GO as a substrate was modified and used for the growth of polymer chains to synthesize polyacrylonitrile-grafted GO (PAN- g -GO) by activator generated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (AGET ATRP). Under the condition of visible light shines, the PAN- g -GO was further modified to prepare [poly(acrylonitrile- co -vinyl(diphenyl pyridine))]-grafted GO (P(AN- co -PHPY)- g -GO) nanomaterial by one-step synthesis. Finally, P(AN- co -PHPY)- g -GO as a nanoprobe was dropped to the surface of the glassy carbon electrode and assembled to the electrochemical sensor . Moreover, it can effectively improve the enrichment capacity of mercury ions and increase the electron transfer rate on the electrode surface. Differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) was used to evaluate the electrochemical performance. Under optimum conditions, the response of Hg(II) at this resulting sensor was linear in the range of 2.0 μM~0.1 nM with a detection limit of 0.06 nM. Additionally, this sensor showed excellent reproducibility, selectivity and stability.

Particle-bound mercury (HgP), ubiquitously present in aquatic environments, can be methylated into highly toxic methylmercury, but it remains challenging to assess its bioavailability. In this study, we developed anEscherichia coli-based whole-cell biosensor to probe the microbial uptake of inorganic Hg(II) and assess the bioavailability of HgP sorbed on natural and model particles. This biosensor can quantitatively distinguish the contribution of dissolved Hg(II) and HgP to intracellular Hg. Results showed that the microbial uptake of HgP was ubiquitous in the environment, as evidenced by the bioavailability of sorbed-Hg(II) onto particulate matter and model particles (Fe2O3, Fe3O4, Al2O3, and SiO2). In both oxic and anoxic environments, HgP was an important Hg(II) source for microbial uptake, with enhanced bioavailability under anoxic conditions. The composition of particles significantly affected the microbial uptake of HgP, with higher bioavailability being observed for Fe2O3 and lower for Al2O3 particles. The bioavailability of HgP varied also with the size of particles. In addition, coating with humic substances and model organic compound (cysteine) on Fe2O3 particles decreased the bioavailability of HgP. Overall, our findings highlight the role of HgP in Hg biogeochemical cycling and shed light on the enhanced Hg-methylation in settling particles and sediments in aquatic environments.

An ultrasensitive and rapid electrochemical detection of trace Hg(II) sensor was developed. The significantly amplified electrochemical signals was caused by the high specific surface area of the electrochemical sensor. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the gold nanospikes were 200 ∼ 300 nm in length and 50 nm in diameter. The electrochemical properties of sensor were characterized by square wave voltammetry. Experimental parameters were optimized using square wave stripping voltammetry. The linear range of sensor for Hg(II) is 3 × 10−10 mol l−1 ∼ 7 × 10−7 mol l−1 and the limit of detection is 1 × 10−10 mol l−1. Hg(II) was successfully quantified in river water and cosmetics. The original Hg(II) in loose powder, Sunblock and whitening lotion using the high ratio surface area electrochemical sensor determination were found to be 2.234, 2.056 and 2.347 mg kg−1 respectively. The results are within the range of standard values, the RSD are 1.7%, 1.5% and 2.1%, respectively. HRSA Au electrode sensor displays high sensitive, excellent stability, reproducibility, especially more convenient than ICP-MS and AFS verification methods. We look forward to the possibility that the HRSA Au electrode sensor can be used for real-time monitoring of Mercury ions in water and cosmetics in the future.
