Developing a catalyst with excellent electrical conductivity and catalytic performance for on-site testing of residual imidacloprid is significant and challenging. In situ growth of Mo2C nanodots on Co-induced N-doped carbon nanotubes (Co/Mo2C/N-CNT) was synthesized to construct a molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor for the detection of imidacloprid. The results proved that the catalytic performance of Co/Mo2C/N-CNT for imidacloprid was over two times higher than those of Co/N-CNT and commercial CNT. This improvement was attributed to the formation of a heterostructure between Co species, Mo2C, and N-CNT, which facilitated highly exposed catalytic active sites. Additionally, the abundant Mo2C nano-dots promoted interfacial charge transfer to achieve optimal dynamics. The optimum preparation parameters of the catalysts were obtained by response surface methodology. By analyzing the relationship between different pH values and peak potential, as well as the influence of different scanning rates on peak potential, it was deduced that the possible electrocatalytic mechanism of imidacloprid involved the reduction of the nitro group to a hydroxylamine group and H2O. Under optimal conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.033 × 10−6mol·L−1(R2= 0.99698), and the linear range was 0.1 × 10−6~100 × 10−6mol·L−1. The application effect of the prepared sensor was evaluated by measuring the imidacloprid in two kinds of tea, indicating that the sensor possessed good sensitivity and selectivity, and was capable of meeting the requirements of on-site detection.

In this study, degradation of the neonicotinoid insecticide imidacloprid (IMI) by ozonation and the E-peroxone process was investigated. Results show that IMI is an O 3 -refractory compound with second-order rate constants for the reaction with O 3 and • OH ( k O3,IMI and k •OH,IMI ) being 3.9 and 3.95 × 10 9 M −1 s −1 at pH 7, respectively. Due to its low O 3 reactivity, IMI was only abated by < 20 % in a selected groundwater during ozonation with typical ozone doses applied in water treatment (1–5 mg/L). In comparison, the E-peroxone process considerably enhanced IMI removal efficiency to > 80 % under similar reaction conditions. During both ozonation and the E-peroxone process, IMI was mainly abated by • OH oxidation. The reaction mechanism of IMI with • OH was investigated with quantum computations, which show that H-abstraction at H23 site was the most favorable pathway. Sixteen transformation products (TPs) generated from IMI degradation were identified using various chromatographic and mass-spectrometric techniques. The acute and chronic toxicities of IMI and its TPs to different aquatic organisms were evaluated with Microtox bioassay and the ECOSAR program, which indicate that some TPs (e.g., TP 2 –TP 5 and TP 7 –TP 9 ) are even more toxic than IMI to aquatic organisms (e.g., daphnia). The results of this study suggest that IMI along with its TPs should be sufficiently abated during water treatment, and the E-peroxone process provides an efficient option to upgrade conventional ozonation for enhanced IMI abatement.

Imidacloprid is the most widely used neonicotinoid insecticide and has been reported to pose a threat to ecological security and human health. Therefore, simple-to-operate and highly sensitive methods for the detection of trace levels of imidacloprid are necessary. Here, we isolated two phage-borne peptides that compete with imidacloprid to bind the monoclonal antibody (mAb) 3D11 from phage display peptide libraries. A phage-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (P-ELISA) and two phage time-resolved fluoroimmunoassays (P-TRFIAs) for the detection of imidacloprid were developed using the phage-borne peptides as substitutes for chemically synthesized antigens. After systematic optimization, the half-maximum inhibition concentrations (IC 50 ) of the P-ELISA, P-TRFIA-1, and P-TRFIA-2 were 0.067 ng mL −1 , 0.085 ng mL −1 , and 0.056 ng mL −1 , respectively. Based on their IC 50 values, the sensitivities of the P-ELISA and P-TRFIAs were more than four times greater than those of previous immunoassays. Additionally, the immunoassays showed satisfactory recovery in the detection of spiked samples and good correlation with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the detection of samples containing incurred residues.

Imidacloprid (IMI) which has been widely detected in the natural water environment is potentially genotoxic to humans and should be effectively eliminated. Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes are considered to be reliable means aiming at organic pollutants degradation, while an efficient catalyst is urgently needed for the activation of the reaction. As a two-dimensional material, 1T-MoS 2 is expected to be applied for the activation of persulfates due to its abundant active sites and good electrical conductivity. Therefore, in this study, 1T-MoS 2 was synthesized by a simple and safe two-step solvothermal reaction and proposed as an emerging activator of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of IMI. It was found that 1T-MoS 2 has significantly better catalytic performance on PMS than 2H-MoS 2 and Bulk-MoS 2 , reaching. 76.4 % at pH = 3. The degradation rate of IMI reduced under alkaline conditions due to the inhibition of catalytic processes. Among the different coexisting anions, H C O 3 - had the greatest degree of interference and inhibition to the degradation process, resulting in the lowest IMI degradation rate for only 42.45 %. Quenching experiments and EPR analysis showed that S O 4 - ∙ and OH were the main reactive oxygen species in the 1T-MoS 2 /PMS process. In addition, the IMI degradation pathways analyzed by UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS included dehydrogenation, electrophilic addition, heterocyclic ring breakage and intramolecular rearrangement. This study promotes the application of 1T-MoS 2 and is expected to provide a novel persulfate-based advanced oxidation process catalyzed by 1T-MoS 2 for IMI elimination in the aqueous environment.

Imidacloprid (IDP) residue in modern agricultural production seriously endangers human health and environmental safety. The establishment of a rapid and efficient method for the detection of IDP residue can effectively prevent its harm to human health. Herein, we demonstrate the carbon cloth (CC) prepared by a high-temperature annealing strategy possesses enhanced electrochemical performance, which could be directly used in electrochemical IDP sensing. Annealed carbon cloth (ACC) is endowed with higher defects, rougher surfaces, more functional groups, more hydrophilic surface , and increased ion-accessible surface area. Furthermore, the ACC electrode shows superior electrocatalytic reduction activity towards IDP, possessing a wide linear range of 5–100 μM, a low detection limit of 0.04 μM, and high sensitivity of 35.58 μA mM −1 cm −2 . Meanwhile, this sensor can be applied for sensing IDP in grapes and apples with a good recovery of 96.8–104.1%. Compared with other modified electrodes , the ACC electrode has the advantages of no binder, no complicated modification, excellent detection effect, low cost, and easy large-scale production. Consequently, this work designs a self-supporting metal-free electrode with high electrochemical performance, providing a new idea for the development of environmentally friendly IDP sensors.

The development of sensitive, facile, cost-effective and eco-friendly sensors is essential for monitoring imidacloprid (IDP) residue on a large scale. Compared with popular modification of electrodes with advanced materials, electrochemical activation is promising at this point. In this paper, we found that strongly basic electrolytes (e.g. KOH and K3PO4) and applying cyclic potential during the activating process are beneficial to greatly amplify the electro-reduction response of IDP by nearly 16 times. Combining the characterization of activated electrodes with electrochemical behavior analysis of IDP, it is speculated that specific oxygen-contained functional groups were formed to bond with IDP molecules, leading to fast electron transfer kinetics. Then a sensitive IDP sensor has been developed with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.03 μM in the range of 0.1–100 μM. The methodological evaluation including reproducibility, stability and recovery has been also carefully studied, verifying the potential of proposed activated electrodes for application in rice samples.

High sensitivity and ultra-trace detection of imidacloprid are important and challenging in the field of food. In this study, we prepared a Fe-rich FeCoNi-MOF in-situ modified nickel foam working electrode by one-step hydrothermal method, and achieved a highly sensitive detection of the imidacloprid. The characterization techniques confirmed that Fe-rich FeCoNi-MOF had excellent crystallinity, tighter structure, and exposed rich active sites. The detection results showed that Fe-rich FeCoNi-MOF electrochemical sensor had a minimum detection limit of 0.04 pmol/L (100 times lower than that of the bioelectrochemical sensors), a wide response range (1 pmol/L–120 μmol/L), and high sensitivity (124 μA pmol/L -1 cm −2 ). These advantages of the electrochemical sensor were revealed theoretically by the valence change of active metal and the first principle calculation. Lastly, the Fe-rich FeCoNi-MOF electrochemical sensor was applied to detect imidacloprid in apple, fresh tea leaves, tomato, cucumber, and had an excellent recovery of 98–102.8 %.

BACKGROUND Over-reliance on and excessive use of pesticides for pest management have led to various side effects, including the rapid development of pesticide resistance. The abundant reactive species present in plasma-activated water (PAW) make it a potential alternative to pesticides for controlling crop pests. Whether PAW can truly replace pesticides or significantly reduce their usage depends on its efficacy when applied in the same manner as pesticides. RESULTS A foliar spray bioassay that simulates the field application of pesticides was established to estimate the direct toxicity of PAW to two insecticide-susceptible and two resistant strains of cotton aphids in the presence and absence of imidacloprid or flonicamid. Spraying PAW alone only caused mortality of about 20–30% against the four cotton aphid strains, significantly lower than the effects of imidacloprid LC 25 dose and flonicamid LC 25 dose to the four strains. Spraying a mixture of PAW and imidacloprid at LC 25 dose or flonicamid at LC 25 dose resulted in significantly higher mortality rates against the four strains compared to the two insecticides diluted with pure water. Relative to pure water control, PAW and its mixtures with imidacloprid LC 25 dose or flonicamid LC 25 dose displayed no adverse effects on chlorophyll content and the photosynthetic parameters of cotton seedlings. CONCLUSION The data obtained indicate that PAW has the potential to serve as a plant-safe synergist for enhancing the insecticidal efficacy of imidacloprid and flonicamid against both insecticide-susceptible and -resistant cotton aphids. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

Imidacloprid (IMI) is a highly toxic organic pollutant. Therefore, effective IMI treatment methods must be developed. This study synthesized iron-modified rape straw biochar (Fe-RSB) to activate peracetic acid (PAA) for IMI removal from water. At the optimal concentrations of 0.55 g∙L − 1 for Fe-RSB and 0.25 mM for PAA, the removal of IMI reached 81.6% after 60 min. Additionally, the IMI removal was minimally affected over a broad pH range (3–11). CH 3 C(O)O· and CH 3 C(O)OO· played crucial roles in the IMI degradation. The degradation pathway of IMI consisted of three pathways, and the ecological hazards of most intermediates were lower than those of IMI. The effect of Cl⁻ on IMI removal was concentration dependent, 2 mM Cl⁻ showed slight inhibition, while 10 mM Cl⁻ promoted the degradation. In contrast, both HA and HCO 3 ⁻ exhibited inhibitory effects across the tested concentration ranges. After five cycles, the removal of IMI reached 61.9%, indicating the stability of Fe-RSB. Overall, a new Fe-RSB/PAA process is proposed for the degradation of IMI.

Neonicotinoid insecticides, such as imidacloprid, pose significant risks to aquatic ecosystems due to their widespread use and potential for accumulation. In this study, a sensitive and robust analytical strategy based on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS 3 ) was developed and validated for the determination of imidacloprid in multiple complex zebrafish biological matrices, including the muscle, liver, intestine, heart, brain, and gills. By harnessing the unique selectivity of the MS 3 acquisition mode, the method effectively eliminated endogenous matrix interferences and achieved a 243-fold enhancement in signal intensity compared to the conventional multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. The sample pretreatment utilized a streamlined protein precipitation approach with methanol, ensuring high extraction efficiency and reproducibility across all tissues. The method was fully validated according to FDA guidelines, demonstrating excellent linearity, accuracy, and precision. Furthermore, the practical application of this assay in a tissue distribution study revealed a non-uniform accumulation pattern of imidacloprid, with the highest concentrations observed in the muscle and intestine, and the lowest in the heart. These findings provide a powerful tool and essential empirical data for further biodistribution investigations and environmental risk assessments of trace-level contaminants in micro-gram level biological samples.

Pesticide residues in foods can disturb the intestinal barrier and microbiota, even at a very low dose; however, studies on direct consequences on intestinal health are still lacking. Here, we evaluated the damage of imidacloprid (IMI) to the intestine and the resulting defense against enterotoxigenicEscherichia coli(ETEC) in C57BL/6J mice. After 8-week exposure to 0.06 mg /kg bodyweight/day, IMI significantly damaged intestinal structure and intestinal integrity, characterized by an increased permeability to FITC-dextran and decreased mRNA expression of tight junction proteins, as well as more broken villi and lower proportions of goblet cells and paneth cells. These were related to the suppression of the self-renewal of intestinal stem cells (ISCs), as evidenced by significantly decreased Sox9+ ISCs and increased apoptosis. Furthermore, the impaired intestinal integrity in mice exposed to low doses of IMI directly increased the susceptibility to ETEC infection and even caused death. On the other hand, exposure to 0.6 mg IMI/kg bodyweight/day lead to significantly increased contents of IL-1β and TNFα both in the intestine and serum, and significantly decreased Th1 cell and IFN-γ contents in the lamina propria during the ETEC infection. Our study suggested that the intestinal damage induced by pesticide residues would significantly decrease the defense ability of the intestine, which suggests a novel perspective when evaluating the long-term effects of food contaminates on intestinal health at low doses without significant toxicological injuries.

Imidacloprid is a pesticide commonly used in agriculture production. Portable and accurate detection of imidacloprid residues is of great significance to food safety and human health. Herein, a red-emitting rare earth complex (Eu-IMDC) probe is prepared, which features low detection limit (75 nM), high selectivity and fast response speed (30 s) for imidacloprid detection. The detection mechanism is investigated through experiments and theoretical calculations. In addition, an intelligent detection platform integrating the fluorescence probe, smartphone and a feedforward neural network (FNN) model is constructed and applied to imidacloprid detection in real rice, millet, and ginger samples, achieving recovery rates range from 96.78 % to 104.77 % and relative standard deviation (RSD) values below than 3.83 %. Meanwhile, relevant parameters, such as the coefficient of determination (R 2 ), root mean square error (RMSE) and residual prediction deviation (RPD) values, indicating excellent fitting and predictive performance of the FNN model. This work offers a rapid, portable, and intelligent sensing platform for pesticide residues in agricultural products.
