Membrane fouling, wetting and scaling are three prominent challenges that severely hinder the practical applications of membrane distillation (MD). Herein, polyamide/polyvinylidene fluoride (PA/PVDF) Janus membrane comprising a hydrophobic PVDF substrate and a patterned dense PA layer by reverse interfacial polymerization (R-IP) was developed. Direct contact MD experiments demonstrated that PA/PVDF Janus membrane could exhibit simultaneously superior resistance towards surfactant-induced wetting, oil-induced fouling and gypsum-induced scaling without compromising flux. Importantly, the size-sieving effect, rather than the breakthrough pressure of the membrane, was revealed as the critical factor that probably endowed its resistance to wetting. Furthermore, a unique possible anti-scaling mechanism was unveiled. The superhydrophilic patterned dense PA layer with strong salt rejection capability not only prevented scale-precursor ions from intruding the substrate but also resulted in the high surface interfacial energy that inhibited the adhesion and growth of gypsum on the membrane surface, while its relatively low surface -COOH density benefited from R-IP process further ensured the membrane with a low scaling propensity. This study shall provide new insights and novel strategies in designing high-performance MD membranes and enable robust applications of MD facing the challenges of membrane fouling, wetting and scaling.

As more eco-friendly and economical choice for wet facial masks, dry facial masks have always had the problem of cumbersome application process and poor water retention property. In this study, based on the mechanism of directional water transport of Janus membrane and plant transpiration , the hydrophobic polylactic acid (PLA) nanofiber layer and the superhydrophilic guar gum (GG) nanofiber layer were prepared on both sides of the silk facial mask (SM) by electrospinning to obtain the guar gum-based bionic Janus directional water transport facial mask (G-DFM). The results showed that the directional water transport function improved the facial mask's water retention by 37 %, and the nicotinamide (NAM) encapsulated in the GG layer gave the facial mask excellent whitening and antibacterial properties . The GG layer could be directed to swell after absorbing water to form the “gel-like”, which ensured that the G-DFM could continue to release NAM during its work and would enhance the attachment between the G-DFM and the skin. G-DFM not only retained the advantages of SM but also expanded the functions that SM did not have, providing an idea for designing more practical and ideal facial masks in the future.

Current scientific advances in wastewater treatment have slowed the pressure on water access. Membrane distillation (MD) was a promising technology for wastewater treatment. However, for the treatment of the spraying wastewater containing high boiling point organic solutions, high energy dependence and membrane wetting by the water-soluble organics with high concentrations were the limitations of the MD process. Herein, Janus photothermal membranes (JPTM) were prepared by chemical plating and then surface oxidation under alkaline conditions. The flower-like CuO hydrophilic photothermal layer which acted as the light trap and anti-wetting armor was constructed on the PVDF hydrophobic membrane surface. In the process of photothermal membrane distillation, when the CuO hydrophilic photothermal layer contacted with feed solution, due to the arrangement of the hydrophilic hydroxyl heads of the organics on the hydrophilic photothermal layer, and the hydrophobic alkyl tails faced the water molecules and repelled them. The light was trapped in the hydrophilic photothermal layer and repeatedly refracted by the flower-like CuO. The flower-like CuO was further optimized by controlling alkali concentration. When the alkali concentration was 2.5 M, the photothermal conversion of JPTM with the moonflower-like CuO hydrophilic photothermal layer was up to 92.86%. When single component high boiling point organic solutions (BCS or DB) were treated by MD, under 1 sun irradiation (1 kW m −2 ), the permeate fluxes achieved 2.68 and 2.91 kg m −2 h −1 with over 98% removal of organics; Further, for the treating of spraying wastewater, it had a high permeate flux of 5.13 kg m −2 h −1 , a photothermal efficiency of 90.79%, and a removal rate of 62%. The JPTM was a low-carbon technology to improve heat and mass transfer for wastewater treatment by photothermal membrane distillation.

Distillation membranes with hydrophobic surfaces and defined pores are considered a promising solution for seawater desalination. Most existing distillation membranes exhibit three-dimensional (3D) stacking bulk structures, where the zigzag water-repellent channels often lead to limited permeability and high energy costs. Here, we created two-dimensional nanowebs directly from the polymer/sol solution to construct dual-asymmetric Janus membranes. By tailoring the phase separation rate, the polymer phase evolved into continuous hydrophilic webs in situ weld on the microporous hydrophobic layer. The webs possess true-nanoscale architectures (internal fiber diameter of ∼20 nm, pore size of ∼140 nm) with enhanced roughness, serving as a superspreading surface to reach a water contact angle of 0° in 1.7 s. Benefiting from the architecture and wettability dual asymmetries, the obtained Janus membrane shows high-efficiency desalination performance (salt rejection >99%, flux of 11 kg m–2 h–1, and energy efficiency of 79%) with a thickness of 6.7 μm. Such a fascinating nanofibrous web-based Janus membrane may inspire the design of advanced liquid separation materials.

The complex microenvironment of diabetic wounds often hinders the healing process, ultimately leading to the formation of diabetic foot ulcers and even death. Dual monitoring and treatment of wounds can significantly reduce the incidence of such cases. Herein, a multifunctional Janus membrane (3D chitosan sponge-ZE/polycaprolactone nanofibers-ZP) was developed by incorporating the zinc metal–organic framework, europium metal–organic framework, and phenol red into nanofibers for diabetic wound monitoring and treatment. The directional water transport capacity of the resulting Janus membrane allows for unidirectional and irreversible drainage of wound exudate, and the multifunctional Janus membrane creates up to a 99% antibacterial environment, both of which can treat wounds. Moreover, the pH (5–8) and H2O2 (0.00–0.80 μM) levels of the wound can be monitored using the color-changing property of phenol red and the fluorescence characteristic of Eu-MOF on the obtained membrane, respectively. The healing stages of the wound can also be monitored by analyzing the RGB values of the targeted membrane images. This design can more accurately reflect the wound state and treat the wound to reduce bacterial infection and accelerate wound healing, which has been demonstrated in in vivo experiments. The results provide an important basis for early intervention in diabetic patients.

Controlling the bubbles' behavior on a solid surface is significant for exploring more related applications and thus recently has attracted increased investigations. Based on this, a Janus poly ( l -lactic acid) (PLLA) membrane with definitely opposite water wettability in air and opposite bubble wettability underwater was successfully fabricated in this work. The obtained Janus membrane exhibited unidirectional transport for air bubble underwater from the superaerophilic side to superaerophobic side, meanwhile prevented the permeation of water medium from both sides under low pressure. This special membrane was designed to couple two chemical reactions. During the designed chemical reaction process, the feature of bubble unidirectional transport allowed the carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) produced in one reaction system to transport through the resultant membrane into another reaction system, wherein it could be consumed. Meanwhile, the anti-water-permeation function of the membrane guaranteed that the two chemical reactions could be performed independently. We believe that the present research could broaden the potential applications of membranes with super-wetting character for gas bubbles.

Mussel-inspired surface modification has attracted great attention in recent years. Porous membranes with opposite surface properties play an important role in various fields such as ion rectification, unidirectional oil/water separation, and nanofiltration. In this paper, we report a spray coating method to prepare a series of single-side modified membranes. Two solutions containing dopamine and NaIO4/NaOH are alternately sprayed onto membrane surfaces. Each spray process can be finished in tens of seconds. Results indicate that this method is suitable for various substrates varying from hydrophilic to hydrophobic surfaces. By introducing charged polymers such as poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) into the spray solution for co-deposition, Janus membranes with differently charged surfaces have been fabricated. Such Janus membranes can remove both positively and negatively-charged dyes, while the traditionally bulk modified membranes adsorb only one kind of the dyes. We further demonstrated that the Janus membrane with asymmetric wettability has potential in promoting bubbling efficiency while reducing the energy consumption. The proposed spray coating method is fast and effective and can be applied to different membrane materials for various applications.

Scaling phenomena are the principal obstacle to the factual application of membrane distillation (MD). In this study, we fabricated a Janus membrane composed of a commercial polytetrafluoroethylene substrate, a superhydrophobic surface layer, and a hydrophilic reverse side coated by MXene nanosheets via a simple spraying method. The virgin and modified membranes were carried out and compared in zero liquid discharge (ZLD) MD experiments. MD flux analysis showed that all the membranes experienced severe flux decline during the ZLD process. Saturation index, Gibbs free energy and nucleation energy barrier were calculated to explain the observed difference in scaling behavior. Screenage assessment of the homogeneous nucleation and heterogeneous nucleation showed that the severe scaling developed from some small clusters of the new phase, wherein the thermodynamic energy barrier played a critical role in determining the anti-scaling behavior for these unsmooth surfaces. Model analysis and data fitting were used to conclude the kinetic behavior of the virgin and modified membranes in the ZLD engineering. Finally, we evaluated the reversible and irreversible scaling after twice washing. Therefore, this study may provide instructive insights to design novel anti-fouling membranes and promote practical applications such as industrial brine treatment and ZLD engineering.

The separation of oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions with high efficiency and environmental friendly remains a challenge in the past decade. This work describes a new method to improve the trade-off of the poly(acrylonitrile- co -methyl acrylate) (P(AN-MA))-based membrane for water/oil separation. P(AN-MA) microfiltration (MF) membrane was fabricated via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method in this study. Then, some of the –CN groups and –COOCH 3 groups were converted to –COOH groups via hydrolyzing. Finally, the selected wettability was attained by grafting PEI on one side while ZIF-8 was anchored to the other side via self-assembly and in-situ interfacial reaction methods. The ZIF-8/P(AN-MA) hybrid MF membranes are superoleophobic underwater on the PEI side while super-hydrophobic under oil on the ZIF-8 side, which can efficiently and accurately separate oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions at a low pressure (0.01 MPa). The separation fluxes of the PEI side were as high as 3053 L/m 2 h and 1035 L/m 2 h respectively, for the surfactant-free mixtures and surfactant-stabilized emulsions. For water-in-oil emulsions, the fluxes were up to 2316 L/m 2 and 878 L/m 2 h on the ZIF-8 side, respectively. The separation efficiency of all the mixtures and emulsions was higher than 97.5 %. Moreover, the Janus membranes showed excellent anti-oil-fouling and anti-water-fouling properties on the two sides of the membranes, as well as remarkable durability during the 10 cycles in oil/water separation. Hence, Janus ZIF-8/P(AN-MA) hybrid MF membranes show potential application prospects in oil/water separation.

Inspired by nature, Janus membranes with unidirectional liquid transport (ULT) were developed to be used in the fields of fog collection, moisture-wicking fabrics, demulsification, etc. However, the obtained Janus membranes are often unifunctional, and it is still a great challenge to adjust the ULT of Janus membranes for multifunctional applications. Herein, a scalable, low-cost, and machine-washable Janus membrane was developed by combining the cyclic self-assembly of phytic acid and FeIII and a one-side spraying coating of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), featuring adjustable ULT upon challenge for multifunctional applications. By controlling the amount of PDMS, the Janus membranes exhibit two different performances, ULT and switchable permeation. The prepared Janus membranes achieved an excellent moisture-wicking fabric (1.6× the water evaporation rate of cotton), fast water collection under oil, rapid demulsification, and the efficient separation of an oil/water mixture. The separation efficiency of a light or heavy oil from water was higher than 99.9% even after 10 separation cycles, and the flux of the separation was up to 2.55 × 104 or 2.38 × 104 L m–2 h–1, respectively. This study could provide an idea for the development of more Janus membranes with adjustable performances to realize multifunctional applications.

The development of high-performance oil-water separation membranes necessitates addressing the inherent challenges of high energy consumption while ensuring both high flux and durability. In this study, we propose an electrospun Janus membrane with an asymmetric structure, consisting of a hydrophilic layer made from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyethylene glycol (PEG), and a hydrophobic layer composed of polycaprolactone (PCL), referred to as the PPCL membrane. By constructing a gradient pore structure within the bilayer membrane, we enhance capillary forces to achieve superior unidirectional water transport. This design allows water droplets to permeate the Janus membrane in just 0.05 s, with a diffusion rate of 217.6 mm 2 /s and a diffusion area of 1084.9 mm 2 . The separation efficiency is found to positively correlate with both the diffusion area and rate, while negatively correlating with time, thereby confirming the beneficial effect of unidirectional water transport on oil-water separation. Even after 9 oil-water separation cycles, the PPCL-16 % membrane maintains stable separation efficiencies of 92.5 ± 1.8 % for white mineral oil-water mixtures and 91.3 ± 1.2 % for dichloromethane emulsions, while consistently achieving an oil-in-water emulsion flux exceeding 205 L·m −2 ·h −1 . In summary, this study offers theoretical support for the design and optimization of unidirectional water transport membranes in oil-water separation applications, ensuring low energy consumption while emphasizing high separation flux and efficiency.

Diabetic wounds are difficult to heal, and the key to wound healing is exudate management and effective disinfection. Inspired by the asymmetric wettability of Janus-structured lotus leaves, herein the study has presented the design of a biomimetic asymmetric Janus membrane that integrates unidirectional biofluid drainage and photothermal-enhanced evaporation/sterilization capabilities for accelerating diabetic wound healing. This Janus membrane is prepared by electrospinning polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber membrane containing polydopamine (PDA) on the surface of polypropylene (PP) nonwoven membrane. Such PP/PAN x%PDA Janus membrane enables antigravity “pumping” of the water from the hydrophobic PP layer to the hydrophilic PAN x%PDA layer within 22 s through contact points on the Janus interface. The incorporation of 30 wt% PDA in PAN imparts high photoabsorption and photothermal responsiveness, facilitating continuous volatilization of the exudate, achieving twice the displacement of water, and causing irreversible damage to bacteria. As a result, it effectively alleviates inflammation and cellular fibrosis while promoting collagen deposition due to its structure and antibacterial properties. Impressively, such photothermal-enhanced Janus membrane achieves an impressive closure rate of 96.7% for diabetic wounds, better than that of (59.8%) for conventional bandages. Therefore, this asymmetric Janus membrane offers a promising alternative for the healing of chronic diabetic wounds.
