Iodine pollution, especially from radioactive isotopes, poses serious risks to environmental safety and public health. Porous activated carbon adsorption offers an efficient and economical approach for capturing gaseous iodine pollutants. This study develops a novel synthesis strategy combining PTFE-mediated silica etching and controlled KOH activation to produce activated carbons with simultaneously high surface area and optimized oxygen functional groups for superior iodine capture. By precisely modulating textural properties, the specific surface area of activated carbon is between 225 and 1185 m 2 /g, the pore volume modulated from 0.8 cm 3 /g to 2.2 cm 3 /g, and the content of the C O group increased from 12.1% to 19.3% after KOH activation. In addition, the obtained materials (CA20PCK) feature homogeneous solid spherical morphology, and the surface elements are mainly composed of carbon (94.4At.%) and oxygen (5.5 At.%). The better fit to the pseudo-first-order model (R 2 > 0.99) indicates that the addition of oxygen-containing groups (O-C=O et al.) improved both adsorption affinity and kinetics. It achieves an exceptional iodine capacity of 4253 mg/g – 1.8 times higher than conventionally activated counterparts – while maintaining 3741 mg/g under dynamic conditions. Mechanism analysis reveals that the enhanced performance originates from strengthened dispersion–repulsion interactions in confined micropores, as quantified by Steele 10–4-3 potential calculations, coupled with accelerated adsorption kinetics facilitated by oxygen functional groups. Grey relational analysis further identifies BET surface area, micropore volume and oxygen content as governing parameters. This work provides not only a high-performance adsorbent with immediate application potential, but also a generalizable synthesis paradigm advancing the rational design of functional porous materials for environmental remediation.

In this work, a novel redox additive of calcon carboxylic acid sodium salt (abbr. CS) has been implemented for the first time in KOH electrolyte for largely improving the electrochemical performance of a supercapacitor . By directly carbonizing potassium citrate monohydrate at 800 °C, giving rise to the Carbon-800 sample, and the resulting specific capacitance can reach up to 128.4 F g − 1 at 3 A g − 1 when measured in a three-electrode system with the conventional 6 mol L − 1 KOH electrolyte. To further elevate these capacitances, certain amount of CS as a redox additive is introduced into KOH electrolyte. Remarkably, the Carbon-800-15 sample by adding CS 15 mmol L − 1 into 6 mol L − 1 KOH electrolyte displays a highly improved specific capacitance of 237.0 F g − 1 at 3 A g − 1 in a three-electrode system, which is almost the 2.1 times than that of the pristine one. In addition, the Carbon-800-15 sample also possesses an elevated energy density of 11.4 Wh kg − 1 at the power density of 1.5 kW kg − 1 when measured in a two-electrode system, much larger than the 7.3 Wh kg − 1 of the Carbon-800 sample. The improved performance incurred by CS additive is attributed to the fast redox reactions at the electrolyte/electrode interface. Apparently, the present efficient and low-cost redox additive of CS is expected to be implemented for largely improving the performances of a supercapacitor.

Although Aramid nanofibers (ANFs) exhibit exceptional mechanical strength, thermal stability, and chemical resistance, their extensive utilization is hindered by protracted preparation processes and inefficient production methods. In this study, we present an efficient mechanochemical approach to rapidly produce ANFs and KOH/DMSO superbase, yielding ANFs at concentrations of 0.2 %, 1.0 %, and 2.0 % within 25, 35, and 50 min, respectively. Furthermore, the analysis of UV–Vis, FTIR, and Raman spectra demonstrated the possible hydrogen-bonding transition mechanisms during the formation of ANFs. Ultimately, the obtained ANFs film (0.2 wt%) and aerogel (1.0 wt%) also demonstrated impressive mechanical properties (tensile strength of 236 MPa, elongation at break of 21 %, and toughness 33.13 MJ/m³) and large specific surface area (204 m²/g), respectively. This study offers an efficient and expeditious method for Kevlar fibers dissociation and introduces a novel approach to preparing highly active KOH/DMSO superbase.

Porous biochar for anode material of lithium ion battery (LIBs) was prepared from wheat straw, one of the most common biomass of agricultural waste in China, with KOH using as activator. Microstructure of the porous biochar was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as well as Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET). The porous biochar prepared contains parallel microporous channels derived from wheat straw. These microchannel structures offer the advantage of facilitating the transport of electrolyte ions and providing more active sites. Meanwhile, the electrochemical properties were investigated by galvanostatic charge–discharge (GCD) curves, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The specific capacitance of biomass carbon activated by KOH reaches 271.7 F g −1 at scanning rate of 1 mv s −1 . After 100 cycles at 0.1 °C rate, the discharge capacity of lithium-ion battery prepared is 310 mA h g −1 , which shows that the material has good rate performance and cycle stability. The samples prepared by this method have a rich pore structure, can improve the permeability of electrolyte, increase the reactive sites, and increase the free movement space of lithium ions and charges, which is conducive to the improvement of electrochemical properties.

Optimization of pore parameters for specific applications is crucial for utilization of hierarchical porous carbon (HPC). In this work, we report a facile method to obtain HPCs for targeting applications in a controlled manner by a one-step site-specific activation method with trace amounts of KOH. For CO 2 adsorption applications, the material is optimized to have a pore size consistent with the kinetic diameter of CO 2 , which facilitates the diffusion of CO 2 in the material. The optimized material shows exceptional CO 2 adsorption capacity (5.21 mmol g −1 at 0 °C and 3.54 mmol g −1 at 25 °C), and excellent adsorption reversibility (97.6% at 0 °C and 98.9% at 25 °C). For supercapacitor applications, the pore size of the optimized HPC is multiple of the size of hydrated potassium ions, which enhances the transport of electrolyte ions. The optimized material provides a high specific capacitance of 369 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , and the assembled symmetric supercapacitor exhibits an extraordinary energy density of 30.51 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 92.23 W kg −1 . This work provides new insight into tuning of the pore parameters for specific applications of HPCs, and a facile strategy for value-added utilization of biomass materials.

We report a facile synthesis of wavy carbon nanowires (WCNWs) derived from polyurethane via KOH activation. The success of this synthesis relies on a carefully designed activation procedure, which involved one pre-activation stage to form suitable precursor and one high-temperature activation stage to allow directional carbon reconstruction. In particular, PU was initially mixed with KOH and thermally treated sequentially at 400 °C and 800 °C for 1 hour, respectively. The resultant products exhibit high purity in the shape of wavy wire, together with a uniform diameter of 51 ± 5.2 nm and the length in the range of 2–8 μm. Systematic studies have been conducted to investigate the effect of reaction parameters in two activation stages on the morphology and structure of final products. It is worth noting that the as-prepared WCNWs could find promising use in the field of both nanoparticle separation and catalysis. For example, they exhibit outstanding separation abilities towards Au nanospheres with different sizes and enhanced catalytic performance when serving as the catalyst support for Pd towards ethanol oxidation reaction. Particularly, the peak current density of Pd/WCNWs catalysts can reach 2126 mA mgPd−1 and the value of its electrochemical active surface area is 60.5 m2 gPd−1.

As promising adsorbents in carbon capture and storage, hyper-cross-linked polymers (HCPs) require high CO2 uptake and selectivity over N2 and CH4. Herein, we reported a series of novel carbonyl-incorporated HCPs using oxalyl chloride as a cross-linker. To enhance the CO2 adsorption capacity and gas selectivity, the fabricated HCPs were further modified by methods of amine functionalization (HCPs-N) and KOH activated carbonization (HCPs-C). Accordingly, the maximum CO2 adsorption capacity of HCPs (HCP3) reaches 198 mg/g owing to abundant carbonyl groups and dominant microporous structures (SBET1047 m2/g, Smicro628 m2/g). Meanwhile, under the effect of amine functionalization, the selectivity of the obtained HCPs-N (HCP3-N) is greatly improved, reaching a maximum of 85.71 (SCO2/N2) and 8.12 (SCO2/CH4). Furthermore, after KOH activated carbonization, the amount of CO2 adsorption of HCPs-C (HCP3-C) significantly increases to 270 mg/g due to the higher specific surface area (SBET1421 m2/g) and arising ultramicroporous structures (Vultra0.26 cm3/g). Aromatic polymers with microporous structures and carbonyl group can be prepared and functionalized to improve the CO2 adsorption and gas selectivity by simple and mild reactions. Our study provides new options for CO2 capture of HCPs and provides a new idea for the synthesis of new HCPs.

Biochar is widely employed as an electrode of supercapacitor. In this work, one-step pyrolysis and chemical activation method were introduced to prepare porous biochars from tea saponin (TS). The performance differences of biochars prepared by two methods were studied. On this basis, further researches were carried out to explore the influence of the mass ratio of KOH/pre-carbonized precursor on the structure and electrochemical performance of the biochars. All samples were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results revealed that KOH could effectively increase the specific surface area of biochar. The specific area of AC TS -1.0 prepared with a KOH/pre-carbonized precursor mass ratio of 1:1, is up to 1550.03 cm 2 /g with a pore volume of 0.9076 cm 3 /g, and the structure was highly amorphous and disordered. The FT-IR and XPS results showed that there are various functional groups on the AC TS -1.0 biochar surface. These structural and compositional advantages lead to a higher specific capacitance (278 F/g) of AC TS -1.0 in an aqueous electrolyte and a high energy density of 27.01 Wh/kg at an organic electrolyte. Meanwhile, the as-prepared AC TS -1.0 has excellent cycling stability over 10,000 cycles in various electrolytes.

In order to achieve high energy-conversion efficiency during CO 2 electro-conversion, OH − oxidation was employed as a counter reaction vs . CO 2 electroreduction for formate production on a Tin cathode. The formate faradic efficiency (FE) and production rate were 80.54% and 0.1549 mmol h −1 cm −2 using KOH anolyte at −1.80 V vs . SCE in 8 h operation, which were about 13.71% and 53.03% higher than that for KHSO 4 anolyte, respectively. This is mainly due to alkaline anolyte is beneficial to stabilize the catholyte pH, thus avoiding the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction, while maintaining fast electron transfer rate for the formation of CO 2* − . Moreover, KOH anolyte achieved the lowest power consumption (4.81 kWh kg −1 formate) compared with KHCO 3 and KHSO 4 . Polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements indicated that such energy-saving performance enhancement originated from low equilibrium potential and fast oxidation kinetics associated with the conversion of OH − to H 2 O, which reduced the anode potential and cell voltage. This study puts forward another insight for cost-effective CO 2 reduction, which is of great value to improve the balance of energy input and output during CO 2 conversion, thus having implication in enriching strategy in the field of electroreduction.

Environmentally friendly magnetic coal-based activated carbon (MCAC) with high adsorption performance has been synthesized by using a facile one-step method. The samples were prepared with ratios of ferrocene to Ningxia coking coal to be 0:1, 1:2, 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 (denoted as CAC, MCAC-1:2, MCAC-1:1, MCAC-2:1 and MCAC-3:1, respectively). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation indicated that there were a large number of pores with diameters below 500 nm on surface of the MCAC. Magnetic properties of the samples were characterized by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), with saturation magnetizations of 9.55–22.48 emu/g. Due to the activation of KOH and the introduction of magnetic particles, the MCAC had a maximum specific surface area of 1188.00 m 2 /g and a maximum total porosity of 0.50 cm 3 /g. As a result, the MCAC exhibited excellent adsorption properties to remove methylene blue (MB), with an adsorption capacity of 238.56 mg/g, while the adsorption rate was still 88% after 5 cycles. Therefore, this strategy can be used as a reference for the clean and efficient use of coal.

Graphical Better dual-ion battery : Activated expanded graphite via a simple KOH treatment as positive electrode, matching with activated carbon negative electrode, enables optimum energy density and power density for a carbon-based dual-ion battery. Such excellence is merited by the loose structure and large specific surface area of activated expanded graphite. A high cycling stability of dual-ion batteries is greatly challenging, as the size required for inserting anions matches only insufficiently with the interlayer spacing of graphite which is often used as positive electrode. Herein, an activated expanded graphite (AEG) electrode is successfully prepared via KOH treatment. The loose structure of AEG accommodates the volume expansion caused by anion intercalation, and the large specific surface area facilitates the immersion of electrolyte ions to afford more energy density. Thus, the cycling stability is largely enhanced without losing capacity. Matching with activated carbon as negative electrode and an ionic liquid electrolyte, the assembled dual-ion battery achieves an energy density of 43 Wh kg −1 at the power density of 756 W kg −1 within a working window of 0–3.6 V. Specifically, the energy density retains 83 % after 50 cycles. Such effective and low-cost electrode optimization opens up a new route toward full enhancement on the cycling performance of positive electrodes for dual-ion batteries.

Hollow mesoporous carbon submicrospheres (HMCNs) have been successfully synthesized via a facile silica-assisted sol–gel strategy, which were further treated with KOH or/and HNO3 to obtain four adsorbents with different structures and surface properties for the removal of dibenzothiophene (DBT). KOH activation can effectively adjust the micro/mesoporous structure by increasing the number of micropores, and HNO3 oxidation can modify the surface properties by introducing oxygen-containing functional groups. HMCNs treated with KOH first and then HNO3 are the best for DBT removal with the adsorption capacity of 33.20 mg S·g–1, which is nearly 45% higher than that of activated carbon with the same treatment. Notably, the adsorption equilibrium can be achieved within only 5 min, much faster than active carbon owing to the existence of abundant mesopores favorable to the diffusion of DBT. The negative ΔG° from thermodynamics result suggests it is a favorable and spontaneous adsorption process.
