Although photodynamic therapy (PDT) has great advantages for the treatment of bacterial infections, photosensitizers (PSs) often have many disadvantages that limit their application. Improving the shortcomings of PSs and developing efficient PDT antimicrobial materials remain serious challenges. In this study, a nanocomposite drug (TiO 2 /curcumin/hydroxypropyl-cyclodextrin, TiO 2 /Cur/HPCD) was constructed and combined with konjac glucomannan to form composite films (TiO 2 /Cur/HPCD films, KTCHD films). The stabilities of TiO 2 and Cur were improved in the presence of HPCD. The particle size of TiO 2 /Cur/HPCD was approximately 33.9 nm, and the addition of TiO 2 /Cur/HPCD enhanced the mechanical properties of the films. Furthermore, TiO 2 /Cur/HPCD and KTCHD films exhibited good biocompatibility and PDT antibacterial effects. The antibacterial rate of TiO 2 /Cur/HPCD was 74.46 % against MRSA at 500 μg/mL and 99.998 % against E. coli at 400 μg/mL, while it was adsorbed on the surface of bacteria to improve the effectiveness of the treatment. In addition, studies in mice confirmed that TiO 2 /Cur/HPCD and KTCHD films can treat bacterial infections and promote wound healing, with a highest wound healing rate of 84.6 % in the KTCHD-10 films + Light group on day 12. Overall, TiO 2 /Cur/HPCD is a promising nano-antibacterial agent and KTCHD films have the potential to be employed as antibacterial and environment-friendly trauma dressings.

The severe environmental pollution and ecological risks caused by dyeing wastewater are currently issues that need to be urgently addressed. Herein, a novel environmental-friendly ternary hybrid aerogel (KGP), composed of konjac glucomannan (KGM), ghatti gum (GG), and polyethyleneimine (PEI), was designed and simply fabricated for the highly efficient and selective removal of methyl orange (MO) from water. The structure and composition of KGP-2 were characterized using SEM, FT-IR, XRD, and XPS. The effects of PEI content, pH, contact time, and temperature on MO sorption were systematically investigated. The experimental maximum adsorption capacity of KGP-2 was 135.39 mg/g, which was three times higher than that of KGM/GG aerogel (43.8 mg/g). With the integration of the adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic studies, along with the various spectroscopic characterizations before and after adsorption, the adsorption mechanisms of KGP-2 for MO were investigated in detail. Selective adsorption tests demonstrated the high selectivity of KGP-2 for MO, and after six cycles of adsorption-desorption, the MO removal rate remained above 80%, highlighting the stability and reusability of KGP-2. Consequently, this newly developed composite aerogel is expected to serve as a highly promising sorbent for the adsorptive removal of MO from practical water systems.

Expanding the application of carboxymethyl konjac glucomannan (CMK) beyond the fields of food and medicine is very important for enhancing the high-value utilization of konjac glucomannan (KGM) derivatives. Herein, we used CMK and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as the matrices and ionic liquids (ILs)/glycol (Eg)/water as the mixed solvents to construct a hydrogel with multi-dissipative structures. Eg acted as plasticizer, leading to the swelling of the CMK/PVA chain entanglements. This was able to compensate for the loss of PVA crystallinity caused by the CMK-PVA hydrogen bonding, and also favored enhancing electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding between ILs and CMK/PVA chains simultaneously. Owing to this synergism, the mechanical properties of hydrogel were remarkably improved. The strength and elongation of the hydrogel with optimized ILs/Eg ratio (1/4) are 1.3 MPa and 1266.9 %, respectively, much higher than those of the hydrogels only with ILs (PCB, 0.7 MPa and 738.1 %) and only with Eg (PCE, 0.7 MPa and 690.5 %). The anti-freezing ability, and the tolerance to dehydration and swelling, were also significantly improved. Thus, the flexible strain sensor prepared could be well applied in harsh environments. Furthermore, by controlling the heterogeneity of ILs, the actuating ability of hydrogel could be activated through a bilayer structuring strategy. This work opens up new application scenarios of CMK-based hydrogels in the fields other than the traditional hydrocolloid areas.

Konjac glucomannan (KGM) was modified with amino acids to synthesize polysaccharide esters (KGMA and KGMH) which were evaluated as corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 0.5 M HCl solution by weight loss tests, Tafel curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The synthetic polymers were found to have the lower water absorbency and the higher water solubility than KGM. Gravimetric measurements showed the maximum efficiencies of KGMA and KGMH for decreasing the corrosion rate of metal at 2000 ppm are up to 89.9% and 92.4%, respectively. Polarization curves indicated polysaccharide esters could retard both hydrogen evolution reaction and metal dissolution reaction and that the inhibitory effect was concentration dependent. Besides, EIS studies demonstrated the corrosion resistance of mild steel in hydrochloric acid was enhanced by polymer additives. The observations on mild steel surface by SEM suggested the metallic substrate obtained good protection against corrosion in inhibitor-containing HCl solution. The adsorptive behavior of polymer molecules including physisorption and chemisorption obeyed Langmuir isotherm and UV–vis spectra revealed the formation of inhibitor-ion complex. The better performance of KGMH on corrosion inhibition was attributed to the easier transfer of π-electron or n -electron, which was confirmed by quantum chemical calculations.

In this study, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were co -loaded onto polydopamine-modified montmorillonite (PDA Mt) and incorporated into a konjac glucomannan (KGM) matrix to fabricate biodegradable active food packaging films. The physicochemical properties of the KGM/ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt films were systematically characterized using XRD, FTIR, TG, XPS, FE-SEM, and EDS mapping. The results showed that the ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt nanofillers were successfully introduced and well-dispersed in the KGM matrix. XPS analysis further confirmed the presence and chemical states of C, O, Zn, Si, Al, and Ag in the composite film. The composite films exhibited improved mechanical properties, with the 4% KGM/ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt film showing the highest tensile strength of 18.9 MPa, which was 86.8% higher than that of pure KGM film. The films also displayed strong antibacterial activity, with bactericidal rates of ≥98.04% against S. aureus and ≥ 98.16% against E. coli . In addition, the migration amounts of Ag and Zn in different food simulants were below the corresponding specific migration limits or reference safety limits. In blueberry preservation tests, the 4% KGM/ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt film effectively delayed fruit deterioration by reducing the weight loss rate to 13% compared with 23% for the control, maintaining fruit firmness at 1.95 N, and preserving total soluble solids at 14°Bx after 10 days of storage. These results indicate that the developed KGM/ZnO/Ag/PDA-Mt composite film has promising potential as a biodegradable active packaging material for blueberry preservation.

This study investigated the effects of konjac glucomannan hydrolysates (KGMH) on the fermentation characteristics of Lacticaseibacillus casei in skim milk. First, enzymatic hydrolysis conditions for konjac glucomannan were optimized, and the properties of the resulting KGMHs were analyzed. Mannanase was used for konjac glucomannan KGM hydrolysis; optimal hydrolysis conditions were determined as an enzyme concentration of 50 U/g KGM, pH of 4.5, and temperature of 45 °C. KGM was then hydrolyzed for different periods to obtain KGMHs with different degrees of polymerization. Subsequent purification yielded freeze-dried KGMH powder. The effect of KGMHs on L. casei fermentation was evaluated by adding 1% (w/w) KGMHs to skim milk. KGMHs significantly influenced the acidification capacity, proliferation of viable L. casei cells, water-holding capacity, and textural characteristics of fermented skim milk. Specifically, deeply hydrolyzed KGMH groups (KGMHc and KGMHd) exhibited superior performance: after 24 h, they resulted in lower pH values and higher viable cell counts. Additionally, KGMHd improved the water holding capacity of the fermented products and adjusted their textural properties, contributing to better product quality. KGMHs effectively promote fermentation performance of L. casei in skim milk. In addition to the fermentation area, the study results provide valuable insights into the broader application of konjac resources in functional food development, dietary fiber fortification, and clean-label food thickening systems.

The KGM-based hydrogels exhibit great potential as a drug delivery material. However, they often fail to meet industrial requirements due to the weak property. In this paper, a simple method was proposed to prepare KGM composite hydrogel by cyclic freeze-thaw method using Fe 3+ ion as crosslinking agent and modified montmorillonite (CS@MMT) as nano-filler to improve the mechanical and slow release properties. The SEM images reveal that the incorporation of CS@MMT resulted in a compact network architecture within the hydrogel. The tensile strength of the KGM/PVA/Fe 3+ /CS@MMT hydrogel has been significantly enhanced by 250 %, attaining 0.30 MPa, in contrast to 0.12 MPa of the KGM/PVA hydrogel. Furthermore, the loading capacity has been significantly improved, with a loading rate of 52.56 ± 3.30 %, in contrast to 7.75 ± 1.39 % of the KGM/PVA hydrogel. In addition, multiple release kinetics models have proved that KGM/PVA/Fe 3+ /CS@MMT hydrogel has superior controlled slow-release property. In all, this study presents a direct way to enhance the mechanical property and slow-release capability of KGM/PVA hydrogels, which is anticipated to promote the practical applications of the KGM-based hydrogels, especially in the biomedical field, such as drug slow release and wound care.

developing green packaging materials that combine degradability and flame retardancy has become an urgent need for industry development. In this work, a novel asymmetric superhydrophobic/hydrophilic Janus flame retardant film (CA-KGM-HGM) was developed by introducing hollow glass microspheres (HGM) into a mixed system of chitosan (CA) and konjac glucomannan (KGM) through physical blending. The experimental results showed that HGM forms a dense physical barrier in the konjac glucomannan matrix to enhance the flame retardancy of the film. The peak heat release rates of CA-KGM film and CA-KGM-HGM film were 127.28 W/g and 60.24 W/g, respectively. In addition, the prepared flame retardant packaging film not only has excellent flexibility, no cracks after folding, and can restore its original state, but also exhibits special properties of hydrophobicity on the upper surface and hydrophilicity on the lower surface. Furthermore, the CA-KGM-HGM film exhibits excellent biodegradability and can be completely degraded in natural soil within 15 days. CA-KGM-HGM film solves the flammability and poor biodegradability problem of traditional packaging film materials and has potential applications in the fields of food and electronic packaging.

Assembly is a natural process where molecules spontaneously form ordered structures with specific functions. In supramolecular co-assembly, interactions between surface soft patches drive structural changes, though this key aspect is often overlooked. In this study, we propose a strategy for supramolecular co-assembly mediated by surface soft patches and apply this approach to optimize the broad-spectrum antibacterial activity of lysozyme (LYS)-konjac glucomannan (KGM) supramolecular co-assembly. Surface charge distribution revealed distinct soft patches on LYS and KGM, with hydrogen bond and hydrophobic interactions between them driving supramolecular co-assembly. Characterized by a densely packed β-sheet structure, the supramolecular co-assembly exhibited excellent rheological properties and significantly enhanced antibacterial activity across a broad spectrum. Specifically, the antibacterial efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus exceeded 99.94 %, and that against Escherichia coli reached over 99.95 % in the Ca 2+ -KGM-LYS coacervate. This research sheds new light on supramolecular co-assembly mechanisms and paves the way for designing broad-spectrum antibacterial materials.

The physical characteristics of chyme during gastrointestinal digestion are considered to significantly affect nutrient digestion and absorption (such as glucose diffusion), which has an impact on postprandial satiety. The present study aims to analyze the hydration rate (HR) and rheological properties of deacetylated konjac glucomannan (DKGM) at different degrees and then explore their effects on rice texture, digestive properties, and the subjects’ post-meal appetite. The present results show that, as the deacetylation degree (DD) of KGM increased, the intersection point of the viscoelastic modulus shifted to a high shear rate frequency, and as the swelling time of the DKGM was prolonged, its HR decreased significantly. The results of the in vitro gastrointestinal digestion tests show that the hardness and chewability of the rice in the fast-hydration group (MK1) were remarkably reduced. In contrast, the slow-hydration group (MK5) exhibited an outstanding ability to resist digestion. The kinetics of starch hydrolysis revealed that the HR of the rice in the fast-hydration group was 1.8 times faster than that of the slow-hydration group. Moreover, it was found that the subjects’ appetite after the meal was highly related to the HR of the MK. Their hunger (p< 0.001), desire to eat (p< 0.001), and prospective food consumption (p< 0.001) were significantly inhibited in the slow-hydration group (MK5) compared to the control. This study explored the nutritional effects of the hydration properties derived from the DKGM, which may contribute to modifying the high glycemic index food and provide ideas for the fabrication of food with enhanced satiating capacity.

In this study, nanofiber films were prepared by electrospinning technology with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and konjac glucomannan (KGM) as raw materials. Tea polyphenols (TPs) were incorporated in the above matrix, which increased physicochemical (thermal and mechanical characteristics) and antibacterial properties of the nanofiber films. The release behavior of phenolic compounds from PVA/KGM-TPs nanofiber films was determined in different food simulants; antioxidant and antibacterial activity of the films were also evaluated. The results showed that the addition of KGM increased the physical and chemical properties of the films. The tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EB) increased from 5.40 ± 0.33 to 10.62 ± 0.34 and from 7.24 ± 0.32 to 18.10 ± 0.91, respectively. PVA/KGM-TPs nanofiber films performed controlled release of TPs, with final release of 49.17% in 3% acetic acid, 43.6% in 10% ethanol, and 59.42% in 95% ethanol. The nanofiber films showed good antioxidation properties, with the free radical scavenging rate increasing from 1.33% to 25.61%, and good antibacterial properties with inhibition zones againstE. coliandS. aureusof 24.33 ± 0.47 mm and 34.33 ± 0.94 mm, respectively. In addition, the as-prepared films showed significant preservation performance for raw bananas at 25 °C.

Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is widely used to treat gastrointestinal mucosal and submucosal lesions. However, it may cause bleeding, perforation, and stricture. Although these complications can be avoided by introducing materials such as polyglycolic acid and carboxymethyl cellulose sheets, such approaches are expensive and time-consuming. Herein, we report a hydrogel prepared by combining a colloidal solution composed of konjac glucomannan (KGM) and sodium alginate (SA) and a fixative solution containing ε-poly- l -lysine (ε-PLL) and calcium chloride. The two solutions were mixed on the wound surface to form the KGM/SA/ε-PLL hydrogel through hydrogen bonds, coordination bonds, and electrostatic attraction. The effectiveness and convenience of applying the KGM/SA/ε-PLL hydrogel to promote wound healing in the esophagus and colon were assessed in vitro and in vivo . We found that the hydrogel stimulated epithelial proliferation, reduced inflammation, promoted recapillarization, and inhibited fibrosis in the esophagus and colon. Therefore, the KGM/SA/ε-PLL hydrogel is an effective and convenient agent that can promote post-ESD wound healing and is recommended for ulcer bed protection in daily clinical practice.
