Electrokinetic transport followed by electrical resistance heating activation of peroxydisulfate is a novel in situ soil remediation method. However, the strategy of electrokinetic transport coupled with electrical resistance heating and the comprehensive evaluation of restored soil need to be further explored. In this study, a lab-scale simulation device for in situ electrokinetic transport coupled with electrical resistance heating activation of peroxydisulfate was constructed to monitor the transport and transfer of peroxydisulfate, target pollutants, and process parameters, and the physicochemical properties and bacterial community of treated soil were evaluated. The results showed that adding 10 wt% peroxydisulfate to both the anode and cathode resulted in the optimized transfer rate and cumulative concentration of peroxydisulfate under electrokinetics. After 8 h, the cumulative concentration of peroxydisulfate reached 66.15– 166.29 mmol L −1 , which was attributed to the migration of a large amount of S 2 O 8 2− from the cathode to the soil under electromigration . Additionally, the anodic interfacial electric potential was improved, which was more conducive to electroosmotic transport of peroxydisulfate from the anode chamber. By alternating electrokinetic transport and electrical resistance heating activation of peroxydisulfate for two cycles, the phenanthrene degradation efficiency in four evenly distributed wells between electrodes reached 75.4 %, 87.6 %, 92.3 %, and 94.4 %. With slight variations in soil morphology and structure, the electrokinetic transport coupled with electrical resistance heating activation of peroxydisulfate elevated the soil fertility index. The abundance and diversity of bacterial communities in treated soil recovered to above the original soil level after 15 days. Our findings may support the application of electrokinetic transport coupled with electrical resistance heating activation of peroxydisulfate as a promising green ecological technology for the in situ remediation of organic-contaminated soil.

CO is an invisible killer that severely threatens the safety of trapped personnel in fire disasters. The existing CO removal approaches are passive and ineffective, which could not satisfy the emergency rescue needs. An active and synchronous CO removal approach (ASCR) based on catalytic oxidation is proposed. By spraying dry powder extinguishant and catalyst powder, the isolation layer and oxidation layer are formed on the fuel surface. CO removal is achieved by both combustion suppression and CO oxidation methods. The synthesized Co-La 0.1 catalyst exhibited superior catalytic activity, thermal stability , and selectivity, which met the application requirements of the ASCR approach. The results of lab-scall tests demonstrated that the CO concentration in the smoke flow decreased from 135 ppm to 0 ppm immediately once employing the ASCR approach. Full-scale tests in the confined tunnel further verified the practical application performance. With spraying 2 kg extinguishant and 0.9 kg catalyst powder, CO concentration increased merely by ∼ 20 ppm within 50 min, which was far lower than that without taking any disposal measures (∼800 ppm). This approach can effectively control the CO concentration below the safety threshold in fire disasters and is significant for emergency rescue.

This work developed calcium alginate (CA) embedded zero-valent iron (ZVI@CA) and CA embedded biochar (BC) immobilized microorganism (BC&Cell@CA) gel beads as alternative to conventional Fe 0 permeable reactive barriers for treating groundwater contaminated with 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP). Lab-scale and field-scale biochar-microorganism augmented PRBs (Bio-PRBs) were constructed and tested. The underlying mechanisms were revealed by a multi-source data calibrated multi-process reaction model, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and high-throughput sequencing. Moreover, calibrated advection-dispersion ( a ) coupled with the two-site sorption ( K d ) and chemical-biological multi-process reaction ( λ ) model were used for revealing 2,4,6-TCP transport behavior and optimizing Bio-PRBs. Compared to that in the ZVI@CA (0.004 h –1 ) system, the reaction rate (0.011 h –1 ) of 2,4,6-TCP increased by 175% in the combined chemical-biological batch system. Moreover, chemical-biological augmentation significantly improved the retardation effect of Bio-PRBs for 2,4,6-TCP. It came from that chemical-biological augmentation significantly decreased the dispersivity a (0.53 to 0.20 cm), and increased the distribution coefficient K d (2.20 to 19.00 cm 3 mg –1 ), the reaction rate λ (2.40 to 3.60 day –1 ), and the fraction (30% to 80%) of first-order kinetic sorption of 2,4,6-TCP in the lab-scale one-dimensional Bio-PRBs. Moreover, versatile functional bacteria Desulfitobacterium was crucial in the transformation of Fe (III) iron oxides. The diversity and richness of archaea in the reaction solution were improved by ZVI@CA gel beads addition. Furthermore, the field-scale reaction system was designed to remediate the chlorinated organic compounds and Benzene Toluene Ethylbenzene & Xylene contaminated groundwater in a pesticide factory site. The field test results demonstrated it is a promising technology to construct vertical reaction columns or horizontal Bio-PRBs for the efficient remediation of actually contaminated groundwater.

The last few decades, Pharmaceutical Active Compounds (PhACs) have been considered as emerging contaminants due to their continuous release and persistence to aquatic environment even at low concentrations. A growing number of research articles have shown the occurrence of numerous PhACs in various wastewater treatment plant influents, hospital effluents, and surface waters all over the world. The rising concern regarding PhACs, which present high recalcitrance towards conventional treatment methods, has provoked extensive research in the field of their effective remediation. This review provides a comprehensive assessment of homogeneous and heterogeneous photocatalytic applications for the removal of PhACs, from real or artificial hospital wastewater effluents. These two representative advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are assessed in terms of their efficiency to remove PhACs, reduce the COD and toxicity as well as increase the biodegradability of the effluent. Simultaneously with their efficiency the operational costs of the processes are considered. Their potential combination with other processes is critically discussed, as this option seems to enhance the treatment efficiency and simultaneously overcome the limitations of each individual process. Moreover, the type of reactors as well as the main parameters that should be considered for the design and the development of photoreactors for wastewater treatment are reviewed. Finally, based on the literature survey, indications for future work are provided.
