Inadequate sensitivity and side-effect are the main challenges to develop cytosensors combining with therapeutic potential simultaneously for cancer diagnosis and treatment. Herein, localized surface plasma resonance (LSPR) based on hybridized nanolayer modified Ω-shaped fiber-optic (HN/Ω-FO) was developed to integrate cytosensor and plasmonic photothermal treatment (PPT). On one hand, hybridized nanolayers improve the coverage of nanoparticles and refractive index sensitivity (RIS). Moreover, the hybridized nanoploymers of gold nanorods/gold nanoparticles (AuNRs/AuNPs) also result in intense enhancement in electronic field intensity ( I ). On the other hand, Ω-shaped fiber-optic (Ω-FO) led to strong bending loss in its bending part. To be specific, a majority of light escaped from fiber will interact with HN. Thus, HN/Ω-FO synergistically enhances the plasmonic, which achieved the goal of ultrasensitive cytosensor and highly-efficient plasmonic photothermal treatment (PPT). The proposed cytosensor exhibits ultrasensitivity for detection of cancer cells with a low limit of detection down to 2.6 cells/mL was realized just in 30 min. HN/Ω–FO–based LSPR exhibits unique characteristics of highly efficient, localized, and geometry-dependent heat distribution, which makes it suitable for PPT to only kill the cancer cells specifically on the surface or surrounding fiber-optic (FO) surface. Thus, HN/Ω-FO provides a new approach to couple cytosensor with PPT, indicating its great potential in clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Herein, an Ag/Ni(dmgH) 2 photocatalyst was constructed through a controllable silver modification strategy. The combination of the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Ag nanoparticles and the synergistic catalytic effect of Schottky junctions significantly enhanced photogenerated carrier separation. Under optimized conditions, the Ag/Ni(dmgH) 2 system achieved a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate of 922.2 μmol/g/h under visible light, approximately 16.7 times higher than the unmodified system. Furthermore, the Ag/Ni(dmgH) 2 film fabricated via screen-printing technology effectively utilized enhanced light absorption from LSPR and efficient interfacial electron transport from Schottky junctions, achieving degradation rates of 98.9 % for Rhodamine B and 86.9 % for Quinoline Blue. The film retained 86.9 % of its activity after four cycles, demonstrating excellent recyclability. This work highlights the dual application potential of Ni(dmgH) 2 materials for photocatalytic energy conversion and environmental remediation.

This paper reports a seed-mediated growth of Pd@Cu core–shell nanocubes with controllable edge lengths from 49 to 103 nm in an aqueous system using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) capped Pd nanocubes with sizes of 21 nm as seeds. During the growth, ascorbic acid (AA) was served as the reductant and hexadecylamine (HDA) as the capping agent and ligand to form a coordination complex with Cu2+. The edge lengths of Pd@Cu nanocubes could be finely tuned by changing the volume of Pd seeds while maintaining the amount of CuCl2 precursor. Cu atoms initially nucleated on one or two faces of a Pd seed via localized epitaxial growth. Due to the lattice mismatch between Pd and Cu (7.1%), Pd cores were not located in the center of Cu shells during the initial deposition of Cu. Interestingly, most of Pd cores could transfer to the center of Cu nanocubes by dissolving and regrowing of the boundary to decrease the interfacial strain when a sufficient amount of CuCl2 precursor and reaction time were provided. The Pd@Cu nanocubes exhibited strong LSPR signals and long-term stability which could be a low-cost potential substitute for Au and Ag for applications in sensing, surface-enhanced spectroscopy, optoelectronics, and photocatalysis. By comparison of the rate constant of p-nitrophenol reduction reaction over Pd@Cu nanocubes with different sizes as catalyst, 83 nm Pd@Cu nanocubes showed the highest catalytic activity.

We report a new strategy to prepare gold nanoflowers (AuNFs) using a two-step seed-mediated method. The as-prepared AuNFs were employed as surface-enhance Raman scattering (SERS) substrates, showing strong signal enhancement. We further found that iodide ions (I – ) could selectively induce the morphological transformation of AuNFs to spheres, resulting in a blue-shift of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) bands, a color change of the AuNFs solution from blue to red, and decreased SERS activity. This behavior allows the AuNFs to be used in the determination of I – .

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are widely used in fiber-optic (FO) local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) biosensors due to their ease of modification, high dielectric constant, and biocompatibility. However, salt ions and cross-linking agents often cause AuNPs aggregation during modification, which significantly degrades the sensing sensitivity of FO-based LSPR. Herein, tetrahedron DNA-encapsulated AuNPs (TDN-AuNPs) were served as a new nanolayer on FO surface for a sensitive biosensor. TDN improved the salt-resistance and cross-linking agent-resistance, also served as a gap to hinder the nanolayer close to each other, which could avoid the AuNPs aggregation on the FO surface. Further, a significant merit of molar ratio-dependent refractive index sensitivity was found in the FO-based LSPR through the three kinds of modification methods, namely self-assembled monolayer (SAM)-based, ployA-based, and complementary strand (CS)-based methods. Further, CS-based method maintained strong chemical stability under weak acid or neutral environment and exhibited stronger binding stability and long-term stability compared to the other two methods. Finally, the CS-based method also showed a new merit of molar ratio-dependent sensing sensitivity. The mole ratio of TDN: AuNPs played a vital role in sensing sensitivity. Under the optimal conditions, the lowest limit of detection of 12 cells/mL was obtained within 50 min. Since high stability, sensitivity, and selectivity for cancer cell sensing, FO-based LSPR biosensor via CS-based method had great potential for cancer diagnosis in the early stage.

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) has been widely used in medical detection because of its time effectiveness, non-invasiveness, high sensitivity, and relatively simple fabrication process. Porous anodic alumina (PAA) can be regarded as a plasma substrate for label-free detection due to its unique two-dimensional structure. In this work, a vivid Au-PAA composite film with the inverted taper structure was developed by multi-step anodic oxidation and pore-widening processes followed by magnetron sputtering with Au nanoparticles (AuNPs). The highly saturated and bright structural color was generated by the synergistic effect of photonic and plasmonic modes. Interestingly, various Au-PAA composite films with structural colors altering from purple to red were obtained via adjusting the height/diameter ratio of PAA. Benefiting from the inverted taper structure, light trap characteristics were effectively enhanced by increasing the incident light and reducing the diffuse light. In addition, a finite difference time domain (FDTD) model was proposed to predict the relationship between the reflectance peak and the height of the composite film, and the simulated data were in good agreement with the experimental results. As a proof of concept, label-free detections of various reagents (water, ethanol, glycol, glycerol, and glucose), the concentration of glucose (refractive index sensitivity of 376 nm/RIU, RIU: refractive index unit), and thrombin (detection limit of 0.1 × 10 −7 mol/L) were realized by the Au-PAA composite film. This vivid Au-PAA composite film provides a very powerful tool for in-situ label-free bio-detection.

2D MXene is highly preferred for photothermal energy conversion and microwave absorption. However, the aggregation issue, insufficient dielectric loss capacity, and lack of magnetic loss capacity for MXene severely hinder its practical applications. Herein, the authors propose multi-dimensional nanostructure engineering to electrostatically assemble 2D MXene and layered double hydroxides (LDH) derived from ZIF-67 polyhedron into a 3D hollow framework (LDH@MXene), and subsequently calcined to construct a Co nanoparticle-modified 3D hollow C-LDH@MXene framework to encapsulate a paraffin wax (PW) phase change material (PCM). The 3D hollow C-LDH@MXene framework not only prevents 2D MXene from aggregation but also contributes a high thermal energy storage density (131.04 J g −1 ). Benefiting from a 3D conductive network facilitating the rapid transport of photons and phonons from the interface to the interior and the synergistic localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of MXene and Co magnetic nanoparticles, the C-LDH@MXene-PW composite PCM yielded a high photothermal storage efficiency of 96.52%. Besides, C-LDH@MXene-PW composite PCMs also exhibited efficient microwave absorption with a minimum reflection loss of −20.87 dB at 13.30 GHz with a matching thickness of only 2 mm. This distinctive design provides constructive references for the development of integrated composite materials for energy storage and microwave absorption.

A WO3−x/TiO2−x nanotube array (NTA) heterojunction photoanode was strategically designed to improve photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) performance by establishing a synergistic vacancy-induced self-doping effect and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of metalloid non-stoichiometric tungsten suboxide. The WO3−x/TiO2−x NTA heterojunction photoanode was synthesized through a successive process of anodic oxidation to form TiO2 nanotube arrays, magnetron sputtering to deposit metalloid WO3−x, and post-hydrogen reduction to engender oxygen vacancy in TiO2−x as well as crystallization. On the merits of such a synergistic effect, WO3−x/TiO2−x shows higher light-harvesting ability, stronger photocurrent response, and resultant improved photoelectrocatalytic performance than the contrast of WO3−x/TiO2, WO3/TiO2 and TiO2, confirming the importance of oxygen vacancies in improving PEC performance. Theoretical calculation based on density functional theory was applied to investigate the electronic structural features of samples and reveal how the oxygen vacancy determines the optical property. The carrier density tuning mechanism and charge transfer model were considered to be associated with the synergistic effect of self-doping and metalloid LSPR effect in the WO3−x/TiO2−x NTA.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is potentially toxic and exceptionally stable attributed to its robust C F bond, which is hard to be removed by UV/TiO 2 systems. In this research, bismuth nanoparticle (Bi NP) modified titanium oxides (Bi/TiO 2 ) were synthesized by a simple photochemical deposition-calcination method and were applied as photocatalysts for the first time to degrade PFOA. The removal rate of 50 mg/L PFOA reached 99.3 % with 58.6 % defluorination rate after 30 min of irradiation via a mercury lamp. Bi/TiO 2 exhibited superior performance in PFOA degradation compared to commercial photocatalysts (TiO 2 , Ga 2 O 3 , Bi 2 O 3 and In 2 O 3 ). In addition, Bi/TiO 2 showed high degradation activity under actual sunlight, achieved 100 % removal rate and 59.3 % defluorination rate within 2 h. Bi NPs increase the light trapping ability of Bi/TiO 2 and promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs via local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, which results in more photogenerated holes (h + ) and hydroxyl radicals ( OH). Combined with DFT calculations and intermediate detections, the degradation reaction is initiated from the oxidation of the PFOA carboxyl group via h + , followed by the loss of the CF 2 unit step by step with the participation of OH. This work presents a novel approach for the practical implementation of TiO 2 -based photocatalysts to achieve highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs).

MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a class of small, endogenous, noncoding RNA molecules, can serve as biomarkers for potential applications in cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and prediction due to its abnormal expression. As a result, a novel label-free biosensor with nanometer scale was prepared and employed in the detection of trace oligonucleotides based on the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The dielectric constant on the surface of DNA modified gold nanoparticle would change when probe single-strand DNA hybridized with target oligonucleotides, which resulted in the notable red shift of scattering peak position. The biosensor with excellent selectivity can be used in a real-time monitoring hybridization process. Notably, this method provided label-free detection of DNA and miRNA at single nanoparticle level with limit of detection up to 3 nM. Due to the advantages of LSPR scattering spectra, single nanoparticle biosensor can be designed for trace cancer-relevant miRNAs detection in the future.

MicroRNAs are important tumor biomarkers. How to effectively detect them by sensors is a challenge because of their extremely low concentrations. We proposed a dual signal enhancement strategy to develop the fiber optic (FO) localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensor for the highly sensitive detection of miR-103. It included two stages, one was to obtain the hot-spot by constructing the multimer structure, AuNP-spacer- AuNPs , and another was the combination of capturing miR-103 by the probe and catalytic amplification by Hexagonal star G-quadruplex catalyzing 4-chloro-1-naphthol to generate benzo-4-chlorohexadienone, which deposited on the AuNPs, resulting in the generation of LSPR peak redshift. The parameters of the preparation and detection application were systematically optimized. The redshift values had a good linear relationship with the logarithms of miR-103 concentrations, with high R 2 0.9973, wide detection range 10 2 - 10 7 fM, and low LOD 6.4 fM. The method had high specificity, repeatability, and reproducibility, and was also successfully validated with real samples. Therefore, the dual signal strategy for constructing FO LSPR sensors can achieve the high sensitivity detection of extremely low concentration of MicroRNAs, which will have great application prospects in medicine and life science.

Universal sensitivity and high operating temperature have always been the serious problems faced by semiconductor based gas sensors in practical applications. The use of photoelectric and Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) effects can replace heating to provide energy to electrons. However, the differences between electrons generated by photoelectirc effect and LSPR effect, as well as the impact of these differences on gas sensing performance are still unclear. In this work, gold and silver modified In 2 O 3 nanocubes are designed and employed as a gas sensor to study the above issues. The gas sensing characteristics under different wavelengths of light are researched. A room temperature natural light assisted gas sensor with high sensitivity and selectivity has been obtained. The key factors affecting selectivity are discussed in details and it is innovatively discovered that selectivity is closely related to the conduction band edge energy levels of sensitive materials. In addition, it is revealed that the reason why the LSPR effect improves gas sensing performance is that the increased electrons in the conduction band come from metal particles, thereby reducing the electron hole recombination rate. Density functional theory (DFT) is employed to provide theoretical support for the proposal. This work opened up a new strategy for the development of room temperature high performance gas sensors.
