Due to their special structure and many excellent properties, porous Si 3 N 4 ceramics have a wide range of potential applications as a new structural and functional integrated material. In the present study, porous Si 3 N 4 ceramics with excellent bending properties and satisfactory porosity were prepared by the gel-casting method. The variations in porosity, bending strength, fracture morphology and phase composition of the porous Si 3 N 4 ceramics with different weight fractions of La 2 O 3 –MgO sintering additive were investigated. The results showed that the density of porous Si 3 N 4 ceramics increased linearly with the increase of sintering additive content. When the content of sintering additive increased from 2.5 wt.% to 10 wt.%, the porosity of porous ceramics decreased from 30 % to 10 %. With the increase of sintering additive content, the bending strength of the samples first increased and then decreased. When the sintering additive content was 5.0 wt.%, the average bending strength of the samples reached a maximum of 240.88 MPa, and scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry results showed that β-Si 3 N 4 particles with well-developed pores and a maximum aspect ratio of 5.8 were formed in the porous silicon nitride ceramics. This study provides a reference for the preparation of porous Si 3 N 4 ceramics with good bending properties and porosity.

In this work, Rh–Co/La2O3–SiO2 showed excellent selectivity to ethanol for direct ethanol synthesis from syngas. The best catalyst exhibited 42.8% selectivity to ethanol with CO conversion of 12.3% and in 145 h’ running maintained stable at 553 K, 3 MPa and GHSV of 3900 mL (gcat h)−1. The investigate results indicated that the interaction of cobalt denoting electron to rhodium adjusted the amounts of carbon monoxide adsorbed associatively and dissociatively, and maybe created a new active site pair of Rh0/Coδ+ for generating ethanol. Moreover, the mutually doping effect could dilute Co and Rh atoms in Rh–Co nanoparticles (NPs), which effectively suppressed the formation of C2+H and C3+OH, and thus led to the high ethanol selectivity and good anticoking property assisting with the carbon eliminating effect of La2O3. Owing to the high dispersion of Rh–Co NPs, the catalyst showed good activity and high resistance to sintering.

Developing high-efficiency non-precious metal-based catalysts toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a major task for Zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Cobalt-based catalysts have been regarded as promising catalysts owing to the multivalence characteristic of the Co element, however, there remains the agglomeration of Co particles during the high-temperature calcination process and the strong adsorption of oxygen intermediates. Herein, the synthesis of Y 2 O 3 -La 2 O 3 co-modified Co nanoparticles embedded within the porous N-doped carbon substrate derived from a metal-organic framework precursor is reported ((Y 1 La 1 )O/Co-NC). Notably, this strategy allows Y 2 O 3 -La 2 O 3 to uniformly distribute around Co nanoparticles and to form intimate Y 2 O 3 -La 2 O 3 /Co interface sites. Benefiting from Y 2 O 3 -La 2 O 3 co-modification, the synergistic effect of the heterostructures, and abundant active sites, the optimized (Y 1 La 1 )O/Co-NC catalysts exhibit a higher half-wave potential (E 1/2 = 0.845 V) than commercial Pt/C (E 1/2 = 0.828 V). In addition, the potential gap between OER and ORR potentials is 0.78 V. As a cathode catalyst for ZABs, (Y 1 La 1 )O/Co-NC achieved a specific capacity of 955.73 mAh g −1 . Theoretical calculations have also revealed that the introduction of Y₂O₃ and La 2 O 3 promotes electron transfer and increases the electron density at Co sites. The interface effect of Y 2 O 3 -La 2 O 3 /Co optimizes the adsorption strength of oxygen intermediates, significantly reduces the reaction energy barrier, and enhances oxygen electrocatalysis. This study offers significant insights into the strategy of employing rare earth metals to boost the performance of cobalt-based catalysts in ZABs.

Herein, uniform triple-shelled La 2 O 3 hollow spheres were synthesized for the first time by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method capable of controlling the number of internal thin-shells, which can be achieved by controlling the calcination temperature. Used as anodes for Li-ion batteries, the triple-shelled La 2 O 3 hollow spheres show excellent cycling performance, good rate capacity, and high specific capacity. A superior capacity, up to 108 mAh g −1 with minimal irreversible capacity after 100 cycles is achieved at a current rate of 100 mA g −1 . After the high-rate charge–discharge cycling, a specific discharge capacity as high as 190.1 mAh g −1 can be restored when the current density is reduced to 50 mA g −1 (theoretical specific capacity = 246.8 mAh g −1 ).

HighlightsFabricate Ni-B/La2O3composite coatings by co-depositing nano-La2O3particles into an electroless Ni-B alloy matrix. The optimal concentration was determined to be 8 g·L−1, evidenced by the best anti-corrosion property. The results conclusively show that nano-La2O3reinforcement effectively enhances the corrosion resistance of electroless Ni-B alloy coatings. This study was conducted to explore how varying the concentration of nano-La2O3particles in the plating bath influences the morphology, constitution, and corrosion resistance of Ni-B composite coatings deposited on N80 carbon steel via electroless plating. The novelty of this work lies in the systematic investigation on the co-deposition behavior and grain refinement mechanism of nano-La2O3in electroless Ni-B system, which has been rarely reported in previous studies. The microstructure and chemical composition of the coatings were characterized through a combination of SEM, EDS, XPS and XRD analyses. SEM confirmed that a dense Ni-B/La2O3composite coating was formed, with a uniform thickness of approximately 10 μm, and the nano-La2O3particles were evenly distributed. XPS analysis verified the presence of B, C, O, Ni and La, while XRD analysis revealed a refinement in crystalline size due to the addition of the nanoparticles. The corrosion resistance enhancement mechanism is attributed to the triple synergistic effect: nano-La2O3pins grain boundaries and refines Ni-B grains to the minimum average size of 12.943 nm at the optimal concentration of 8 g·L−1; the refined grain structure promotes the formation of a continuous and dense Ni(OH)2passive film; the uniformly dispersed nanoparticles act as physical barriers to block the penetration of corrosive media. Electrochemical measurements demonstrated that this coating exhibited outstanding anti-corrosion performance, as confirmed by a remarkably positive corrosion potential (Ecorr= −0.37189 V) and a minimal corrosion current density (Icorr= 3.7524 μA/cm2). The results conclusively show that nano-La2O3reinforcement effectively enhances the corrosion protection performance of electroless Ni-B alloy coatings.

To tackle the challenge of non-destructively analyzing complex oxide layers formed by atmospheric corrosion on active metals, we investigate the potential of inverse spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (inverse-SORS) to detect corrosion products and elucidate how the spectroscopic features of SORS vary. This study explores the utilization of inverse-SORS technology for longitudinal structural analysis of opaque CeO 2 /La 2 O 3 laminates, which serve as a proxy for corrosion products. Through a combination of experimental measurements and Monte Carlo simulation, it demonstrates the feasibility of inverse-SORS in non-destructively elucidating the layered structure of these laminates. With increasing the spatial offset of this technology, the Raman intensity ratio of La 2 O 3 -to-CeO 2 increases from 0.23 to 3.2 and then decreases to 0.27 for the CeO 2 /La 2 O 3 sample with a 34-μm-thick CeO 2 layer under 532-nm excitation, whereas the bottom La 2 O 3 layer is hardly detected when the thickness of the upper La 2 O 3 layer increases to 225 μm. The results reveal that a thinner CeO 2 layer facilitates the escape and detection of Raman signals originating from the bottom La 2 O 3 layer, leading to an enhanced La 2 O 3 -to-CeO 2 signal ratio and a reduced offset at the characteristic peak. The research also sheds light on the intricate interplay among multiple variables, such as spatial offset, laser wavelength, the corresponding absorption factor, the thickness of the oxide layer, and the compactness. These insights suggest that SORS is a valuable and non-destructive approach for dissecting the structures of highly turbid composites of metallic compounds and semi-quantitatively deducing their thickness.

Refractory molybdenum (Mo) alloys exhibit great potential for service in extreme environments. However, their poor room-temperature plasticity and strong tendency toward brittle fracture severely limit further engineering applications. As a representative engineering Mo alloy, the toughness of TZM still requires substantial improvement. In this study, spark plasma sintering (1900 °C) was employed to systematically investigate the effects of La 2 O 3 additions (0, 0.5, and 1.0 wt%) on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of TZM alloy, with an emphasis on elucidating the underlying strengthening-toughening mechanisms. The results reveal that an appropriate La 2 O 3 addition (0.5 wt%) markedly refines grains through the Zener pinning effect and promotes sintering densification, while simultaneously inducing the formation of second-phase particles composed of La 2 O 3 cores surrounded by La-Ti-O composite structures. The TZM-0.5 wt% La 2 O 3 alloy exhibits the most desirable strength-ductility synergy, characterized by an ultimate tensile strength of 642.5 MPa, an elongation of 28.9%, and a strength-ductility product of 18.6 GPa·%. Fractographic analysis shows a typical ductile fracture mode dominated by microvoid coalescence. In contrast, excessive La 2 O 3 addition leads to particle coarsening and significantly deteriorated plasticity. Quantitative analysis indicates that grain refinement provides a strength increment of approximately 6.4 MPa estimated using the Hall Petch relationship, whereas Orowan strengthening contributes a strength increment of approximately 19 MPa. Together, these effects establish a coupled strengthening-toughening pathway based on grain refinement and intragranular dispersion strengthening. Within the investigated range, this work identifies 0.5 wt% La 2 O 3 as the optimal doping level for TZM alloys and theoretical basis for achieving a synergistic enhancement of strength and ductility in Mo alloys.

Water-purifying materials are of vital importance for providing sanitary water, especially in epidemic and disaster areas and for wilderness survival. Here, we report a novel inorganic composite with a fast, reusable, and pleiotropic water purification ability. The composite of heterogeneous Ni–La2O3 nanofibers was developed using an easy, low-cost, and large-scale production process, i.e., an electrospinning technique. Because of the unique heterostructure formed by introducing nickel nanoparticles into the La2O3 host, the nanocomposite fibers can rapidly remove various detrimental micropollutants with absorption rate constants hundreds of times greater than those of inorganic materials and activated carbons. In addition, the nanocomposite can be recycled by a soft washing procedure at ambient temperature and demonstrates a much more stable performance than the state-of-the-art activated carbon materials. Furthermore, the nanofibers have an excellent germicidal effect against the high-risk human pathogen Escherichia coli. Our work introduces a promising inorganic absorbent suitable for purifying life-sustaining water supplies in emergency situations and alleviating worldwide water shortages.

A series of colorless and transparent (28- x )La 2 O 3 -72Al 2 O 3 : x Tm 3+ ( x = 0, 1, 1.5, 2, 3) luminescent glasses were successfully prepared by the containerless method. The effects of Tm 3+ substitution on the physical, thermal, optical and photoluminescence properties of La 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 glasses were investigated. X-ray diffraction confirmed the amorphous natures of the as-prepared glasses. Excitated at 354 nm, La 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 :Tm 3+ glasses emitted blue luminescence at 457 nm, corresponding to the 1 D 2 → 3 F 4 transition of Tm 3+ . These glasses showed high Vicker's hardnesses (7.2–8.8 GPa), and excellent thermal stabilities ( T g : 840–851 °C), which were both augmented with increasing content of Tm 3+ . They also exhibited high transmittances in a wide window ranging from 220 nm to 8.9 μm. In conclusion, the substitution of Tm 2 O 3 for La 2 O 3 increased the Vicker's hardness, thermal stability and transmittance window of La 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 glasses, allowing potential applications to optical devices in the visible to infrared region.

Natural molybdenite (MoS 2 ) displays large interlayer distance and rich electrochemical activities, but suffers from the complex preparation process with serious pollution. MoS 2 , as the low-cost resources, have captured numerous attentions as first-hand energy-storage materials. However, they are still limited by the shuttling of polysulfide and side reactions. Through the in situ solution deposition and thermochemical methods, molybdenite@La 2 O 3 is successfully prepared with the formation of Mo S La bonds in the interfaces. La 2 O 3 , as the important catalyst, is uniformly distributed on the surface of molybdenite, which serves vital roles in the redox reversibility. Owing to the fascinating architecture, the as-obtained samples deliver a considerable capacity of 803.1 mA h g −1 , with high coulombic efficiency of 86.32%. After 500 cycles, the capacity increases up to ≈ 1200 mA h g −1 . Even at 5.0 A g −1 , its capacity can be remained ≈ 550 mA h g −1 after 100 cycles. Assisted by the detailed kinetic behaviors, the improved energy-storage capability mainly comes from the enhancements of pseudocapacitive behaviors. Moreover, benefiting from the detailed resistance analysis, the existing of La 2 O 3 can induce the evolution of redox reactions stability. Thus, the work is expected to provide effective modified strategy for natural molybdenite in energy-storage systems.

Ni 3 S 2 -La 2 O 3 heterojunction on sulfur-doped carbon is fabricated. • It achieves 99.05% HMF conversion and 96.62% FDCA selectivity. • Heterojunction boosts charge transfer and lowers reaction energy barrier. • The catalyst reconstructs into Ni(OH) 2 /La 2 O 3 as the true active phase. Herein, we report a ball milling pyrolysis route to prepare highly dispersed Ni 3 S 2 /La 2 O 3 heterostructure nanoparticles immobilized on sulfur-doped carbon (Ni 3 S 2 /La 2 O 3 @SC) for the electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Structural characterizations combined with theoretical calculations confirm that the formation of the La 2 O 3 /Ni 3 S 2 heterojunction interface modulates the electronic structure of Ni active sites, thereby enhancing HMFOR performance. Electrochemical performance evaluation shows that Ni 3 S 2 /La 2 O 3 @SC achieves a current density of 100 mA·cm -2 at a potential of 1.697 V vs. RHE, while exhibiting enhanced kinetics for HMF oxidation. I n- situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) further reveals that interfacial charge transfer effectively suppresses the competing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and promotes HMF oxidation. Through reaction monitoring by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), it is demonstrated that HMF is predominantly converted to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) via the HMFCA pathway. Under a constant current density of 100 mA·cm -2 , Ni 3 S 2 /La 2 O 3 @SC achieves a HMF conversion of 99.05%, an FDCA selectivity of 96.62%, and a Faradaic efficiency of 82.60%. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further reveal that the formation of the La 2 O 3 /Ni(OH) 2 heterojunction interface not only suppresses the over-adsorption of HMF on Ni–OH sites and lowers the reaction energy barrier for the critical FDCA desorption step in HMFOR, but also enhances charge transfer between reactants and active sites, thereby facilitating the cleavage of key α-C–H and –O–H bonds during HMFOR. The above studies demonstrate the critical role of interfacial charge transfer in modulating the oxidative activity of Ni–OH active sites and enabling efficient HMFOR. Controllable construction of hollow tubular structures and the mechanism of photo-thermal synergistic catalysis. • The incorporation of Zn facilitates the directional transfer of photoexcited electrons to Pd, tailoring its electronic structure. • Exceptional catalytic performance (TOF = 4234h −1 ) and atomic utilization efficiency achieved under ultralow palladium loading. Photothermal synergy offers a promising pathway to overcome the limitations of high energy demands and stringent reaction conditions associated with conventional Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction. Herein, a hollow tubular palladium oxide-zinc oxide/lanthanum oxide nano photothermal catalyst (PdO-ZnO/La 2 O 3 ) was successfully synthesized via electrospinning combined with high-temperature pyrolysis. The as-prepared material exhibited outstanding photothermal catalytic activity in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction, achieving a 98% yield of biphenyl within 30 min under mild conditions and delivering a turnover frequency (TOF) as high as 4234.1 h -1 . The superior catalytic activity is attributed to the transfer of photogenerated electrons from Zinc species to palladium species under visible light irradiation, facilitating the formation of electron-rich palladium active sites. This synergistic effect significantly enhances the reaction rate of the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling. This catalyst achieves high catalytic activity with only 0.5 wt% Pd loading, outperforming prior reported systems by maintaining excellent performance while drastically lowering Pd consumption and enhancing precious metal utilization efficiency. Furthermore, the catalyst retained over 92% of its performance after five reaction cycles, demonstrating robust recyclability and sustained catalytic performance. This study provides new insights for the development of high-performance and low-energy photothermal catalysts and facilitates the practical application of Suzuki-Miyaura reactions in green synthesis.
