A LiFePO4/C composite was directly synthesized via a simple solvothermal method. Ferric nitrate nonahydrate, Fe(NO3)3·9H2O, was selected as a low cost iron source in the ethanol process and glucose as the carbon source. Through SEM images, it was found that the concentration of the glucose solution has an important influence on the morphology of particles. The samples were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and TEM measurements, showing the formation of graphitic carbon, which is desirable for its contribution to the electronic conductivity. XPS analysis verified that Fe3+ was almost completely reduced to Fe2+. CV (cyclic voltammetry), EIS (electrochemical impendence spectroscopy), and galvanostatic charge/discharge tests were conducted to further study the electrochemical properties of the LiFePO4/C composite. The results reveal that the LiFePO4/C composite with a rodlike shape has the highest specific capacity of 147 mA h g−1 at 0.1C, and the capacity retention remains 100% after 50 cycles.

LiFePO4 is an effective battery material which has gained global focus. In this study, we prepared a novel Cu+-doped Li[Fe0.9Cu0.1Li0.1]PO4/C cathode material via a carbothermal reduction method using glucose as carbon source. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and Rietveld refinement on the samples are consistent with the orthorhombic phase and showed that the substituting Cu+ ions and excess Li+ ions occupy the Fe sites. The micro-morphology of the samples indicates that Cu+ doping can decrease the particle size and maintain the crystal structure of LiFePO4/C. XP spectra confirmed that the surface oxidation states of Fe and Cu are +2 and +1, respectively. The as-prepared Li[Fe0.9Cu0.1Li0.1]PO4/C composite exhibits enhanced initial discharge capacity (148.8 mA h g−1) compared to the un-doped LiFePO4/C. The discharge capacity remains at 149.8 mA h g−1 after 50 cycles at a rate of 0.2C, which displayed an excellent cycling stability. Furthermore, the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) results showed that the Cu+-doped LiFePO4/C composite exhibits a higher lithium-ion diffusion coefficient and lower charge transfer resistance than the undoped counterparts. This study presents a novel Cu+-doped LiFePO4/C cathode material with enhanced electrochemical properties, which could be potentially applied as a battery material.

To address the demand for high-rate and long-cycle-life cathode materials in the electric vehicle field, this research focuses on overcoming the intrinsic kinetic limitations of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4, LFP). By employing the rare-earth element gadolinium (Gd) as a multifunctional modifier, an innovative one-step modification strategy was developed. This approach achieves homogeneous bulk doping of LFP while simultaneously forming a thin protective surface coating in situ. The optimal LFP-1% Gd composite exhibits a high reversible capacity of 157.9 mAh g–1 at 0.1 C, accompanied by significantly reduced electrochemical polarization. Comprehensive characterization confirms that Gd3+ doping effectively expands the crystal lattice, thereby broadening Li+ diffusion pathways. In addition, the concomitant nanoscale surface coating stabilizes the electrode–electrolyte interphase and facilitates charge transfer. This synergistic dual-modification effect results in exceptional long-term cycle performance and superior rate performance. Specifically, it achieves 97.2% capacity retention after 900 cycles at 1 C and delivers 99.2 mAh g–1 at an ultrahigh rate of 20 C. This work elucidates a clear structure-performance relationship and provides a viable material design strategy for developing next-generation lithium-ion battery cathodes with high-rate and high-power.

Electrolyte conductivity and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film are two key factors that affect the low temperature performance of LiFePO 4 battery. In this work, the enhancement of conductivity is realized through optimizing the proportion of solvents by mass triangle model. SEI modification is achieved by adding film-forming agent of Li2CO3 in the high conductivity electrolyte of LiPF 6 -EC/PC/EMC (0.14/0.18/0.68). For LiFePO4 electrode, 51.5% of its room temperature capacity is delivered at -30 ○ C with the addition of 4% Li 2 CO 3 in the electrolyte. As XPS measurement verified, the Li 2 CO 3 precipitates on the electrode surface hinder electron transfer more efficiently and suppress electrolyte reaction further. Moreover, lithium ion migration within this phase is speeded up with the help of Li vacancies in Li 2 CO 3 .

Polyaniline (PANI) was synthesized by adsorption double oxidizer method, and then reduced with N 2 H 4 ·H 2 O (r-PANI), doped with HClO 4 (d-PANI). PANI with different states was combined with lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) in water-based slurry to form PANI/LFP composites. Some physical characterization methods (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis, scanning electron microscope) were used to analyze the morphology and structure of the composites. The electrochemical properties were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy, galvanostatic charge/discharge, and rate capability. The specific capacity of the r-PANI/LFP composite reached 154 mAh/g, which was 4.1% higher than that of pure LFP, and the coulombic efficiency of the battery was close to 100%. Under the higher discharge rate conditions, the r-PANI/LFP composite still released a good reversible capacity. Moreover, the cyclability and rate capability of the r-PANI/LFP composites are better than that of pure LFP.

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) batteries have been considered to be an excellent choice for electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage facilities owing to their superiorities of high specific energy, low cost, excellent thermal safety, and long lifespan, leading to numerous scrap batteries. The lithium recovery from spent LiFePO 4 batteries could be an alternative to relieve the shortage of resources and prevent the environmental pollution. However, traditional lithium recycling methods are limited in the practical application owing to the enormous consumption of chemical reagents and inevitable secondary pollution. Here we demonstrate a unique solar-assisted flow-through electrolysis method based on a TiO 2 photoelectrode with efficient redox shuttles for lithium metal recovery from spent LiFePO 4 batteries. The photovoltage generated on the TiO 2 photoelectrode compensated the electrolysis potential, resulting in electric energy saving of 20.37% for lithium metal recovery. During the solar-assisted electrolysis process, metallic lithium could be instantaneously deposited on the copper foil avoiding secondary pollution. Moreover, the consumption of the I – solution was minimal via a close-loop flow-through regeneration reaction. 38.37 μg lithium metal was deposited with the energy consumption as low as 12.90 Wh g –1 . It is worth noting that the lithium recovery from industrial spent LiFePO 4 powders achieved a high recycling efficiency of 97.64%. This work provides a new simple but efficient way to recover lithium metal from spent LiFePO 4 batteries.

Compared with traditional centimeter-level electrodes, microelectrodes exhibit a small reaction area, high sensitivity, fast mass transfer rate, and low polarization current. However, current microelectrode preparation processes are very complicated and costly. Herein, we proposed a facile and universal method for fabricating single-particle microelectrodes. In the precursor solution, polyvinyl alcohol and ammonia were introduced as the polymeric binder and pore-forming agent, respectively. Through spaying-drying-sintering processes, the single-particle microelectrodes were successfully prepared for Li4Ti5O12 (LTO), LiCrTiO4 (LCTO), and LiFePO4/C (LFP/C), which showed excellent electrochemical properties. Furthermore, the single-particle microelectrode can be adopted to study the electrochemical oscillations of Li-ion batteries and assemble a full-cell microbattery as a potential next-generation microscale power source.

The exponential growth of electric vehicles (EVs) will lead to the large-scale retirement of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in the future. This work proposes an environmentally friendly solid-phase strategy for regenerating waste LFP cathode materials. The regeneration mechanism is also investigated through characterizations. The method involves lithium supplementation, crystal structure repair and Cu doping. Glucose is used as a reducing agent to reduce a large amount of Fe 3+ in waste LFP to Fe 2+ , while the addition of Li + is used to fill the lithium vacancy in waste LFP. Notably, Cu doping increases the vibrational density and conductivity of the regenerated material and expands the ion diffusion channel, which significantly enhances the electrochemical performance of the regenerated LFP cathode. Moreover, the specific capacity of regenerated LFP (Cu@R-LFP) at 0.05C is 160.15 mAh/g, about 97.65 % of that of new LFP (N-LFP). The capacity retention rate of Cu@R-LFP can be as high as 81.19 % even after 1,000 cycles at 1C rate. The method proposed in this study provides a simple and scalable strategy for recycling waste LFP cathode materials.

Zinc-ion batteries, known for safety and efficiency, are a hotspot in electrochemical energy storage field. Nonetheless, the emergence of dendrites on zinc anodes during electrochemical cycles can lead to capacity attenuation and even failure, particularly under low temperatures. In this study, we develop a novel dendrite-free and low-temperature resistant Zn(ClO 4 ) 2 /Li 2 SO 4 /Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) hybrid electrolyte by using DMSO as a hydrogen bond acceptor and solvation regulator. Our research demonstrates that, by reducing the desolvation energy barrier of the Zn 2+ solvation sheath and the nucleation overpotential of Zn deposition, DMSO effectively inhibits zinc dendrites and side reactions. Furthermore, DMSO disrupts hydrogen bonding between water molecules, preventing electrolyte freezing at low temperatures. As a result, at 0.5 mA cm −2 , the Zn||Zn symmetric device using this hybrid electrolyte exhibits consistent operation for over 4000 h even at -25 °C, featuring a minimal deposition/dissolution overpotential of approximately 0.045 mV. Additionally, at -20 °C, the Zn||Zn(ClO 4 ) 2 -Li 2 SO 4 -DMSO||LiFePO 4 battery demonstrates stable cycling for over 600 cycles at 0.6 C (1 C = 170 mA g − 1 ), delivering a capacity of 103 mA h g −1 .

Carbon-coated lithium iron phosphate cathode material (LiFePO 4 /C) was synthesized through an ultrasonic-assisted process, utilizing carbon aerogel as the carbon source and employing the hydrothermal method. The optimal synthesis process for LiFePO 4 /C was determined by adjusting parameters such as ultrasonic time, ultrasonic power, hydrothermal conditions, and calcination conditions. Material Studio simulation, X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and laser particle size analysis were employed to characterize the crystal structure, morphology, and particle size of the material. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of preparing a carbon-coated lithium iron phosphate cathode material with superior morphology and uniform coating using ultrasonic assistance.

Spindle-like carbon coated LiFePO 4 (LiFePO 4 /C) composites have been successfully synthesized via a novel one-pot supercritical methanol method. The products were characterized by X-ray power diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The particle size, morphology and electrochemical reactivity changed with the concentration of lithium and carbon source. A possible morphology evolution process was also proposed. The glucose not only facilitates the formation of single crystalline LiFePO 4 , but also gives an amorphous carbon layer on the surface LiFePO 4 spindles.

In recent years, a large number of spent lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4, abbreviated as LFP) batteries have been retired. Selective leaching is the most suitable recycling option for spent LFP (S-LFP). However, the current mainstream oxidants and acids are not economical, safe, and green. Herein, we constructed a HNO3-O2 system to achieve efficient leaching of Li from S-LFP. HNO3 can be recovered by high temperatures after use to achieve the recycling of acid, and O2 is more economical and safer than mainstream oxidants. In the comfortable oxidizing environment provided by HNO3, O2 is used to oxidize Fe2+ in S-LFP into Fe3+, and Li+ is extracted from S-LFP into the solution with a leaching rate of almost 100%. The lithium-rich solution is further used to leach the Li from the spent graphite anode, and then the Li in the solution is captured using CO2 to obtain Li2CO3. The iron phosphate (FePO4) slag from Li extraction is regenerated into LFP based on the above obtained Li2CO3 through carbon thermal reduction. The regenerated LFP displays a high discharge capacity of 163.85 mAh g–1 and a stable cycling performance, which are comparable to those of commercial LFP.
