Self-driven degradation and protection against chemical warfare agent simulants via MOF-808 derived bipolar membrane interfaces

Na Gao,Xiao-Peng Li,Xinbo Wang,Li Li,Heguo Li,Fen Luo,Yue Zhao,Huan Xu,Liang Wu

The efficient and benign detoxification of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) is of critical importance for public security. Conventional decontamination methods often suffer from drawbacks such as high alkali consumption, strong corrosiveness, and secondary pollution. Bipolar membranes (BPMs), which facilitate in-situ alkali generation under an electric field, offer a promising alternative for degrading CWA simulants. However, their practical application is limited by insufficient water dissociation efficiency and poor operational stability. To address these challenges, we developed a novel bipolar membrane (BPM3–6) by integrating a functionalized polymer matrix with a catalytic interlayer composed of metal–organic framework (MOF-808). The resulting membrane achieved highly efficient water dissociation (93.3% within 1 h) and rapid degradation of CWA simulants without external alkali addition. Operating at a low transmembrane voltage of 1.23 V, BPM3–6 demonstrated a short degradation half-life of 27.7 min for the simulant dimethyl 4-nitrophenylphosphate (DMNP)—significantly faster than its natural hydrolysis rate in aqueous solution. Moreover, the membrane retained outstanding performance over 20 consecutive cycles, with only a 6.5% decrease in degradation efficiency, highlighting its exceptional catalytic and structural durability. With its high efficiency, environmental compatibility, and self-driven alkali production capability, this MOF-enhanced BPM electrochemical technology represents a robust and sustainable strategy for CWA decontamination, offering a reliable safeguard for public security.

Synthesis of ZrP–C using MOF-808 as a template and investigation of its fluoride ion adsorption

Zuliang Wang,Aotian Gu,Chunhui Gong,Xiqing Xu,Peng Wang,Yi Yang

This work describes the synthesis of a ZrP–C composite adsorbent using MOF-808 as a template via one-step, high-temperature carbonization. The adsorption performance of ZrP–C material toward fluoride ions was investigated as a function of time, solution concentration, temperature, pH, and coexisting anions. After 3 h, the ZrP–C-3 adsorbent achieved saturation in fluoride uptake, demonstrating a final uptake of 37 mg/g at equilibrium. Fit the adsorption process using kinetic and isothermal adsorption models. The study revealed that adsorption was dominated by monolayer chemical adsorption. Adsorption was found to be endothermic, according to thermodynamic studies, with higher temperatures favoring increased uptake. Combined XPS, XRD, and FT-IR studies revealed that ion exchange, surface complexation, and electrostatic interactions jointly governed fluoride removal. For low-concentration fluoride-containing water bodies, typically those with concentrations below 20 mg/L, adding an appropriate amount of adsorbent could effectively reduce the wastewater concentration to meet national standards. These results highlight the strong potential of ZrP–C-3 for practical applications in fluoride removal from wastewater.

Confined Growth of MOF-808 in Hollow Mesoporous Silica Spheres Enables Efficient Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of Furfural

Ma Xiao,Wang Guangxing,Xu Ting,Feng Lu,Zhou Rundong,Li Cuiqin,Li Feng

Catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of furfural to furfuryl alcohol is a pivotal strategy for valorizing biomass-derived platform molecules. Herein, we report the design of a yolk-shell MOF-808@hollow mesoporous silica spheres (MOF-808@HMSS) catalyst, where MOF-808 nanocrystals are uniformly confined within the internal cavities of HMSS. Compared to pure MOF-808, the spatial confinement effect imposed by HMSS induces the formation of smaller MOF-808 nanocrystals, increasing the density of accessible active sites. The mechanically robust HMSS shell significantly enhances the structural integrity of the catalyst by mitigating mechanical attrition and suppressing leaching of active components during reaction. Notably, the unique yolk-shell architecture creates a confined nanoscale microenvironment that promotes efficient adsorption and activation of reactants at catalytic centers. Consequently, MOF-808@HMSS exhibits markedly superior performance in CTH of furfural as well as higher reusability and cycling stability compared to pure MOF-808. Detailed characterization reveals abundant Lewis acid sites with a minor proportion of basic sites in MOF-808@HMSS. Selective poisoning experiments confirm that Lewis acid sites play a predominant role in the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reaction, while synergistic interplay between acidic and basic sites enhances reactant adsorption and facilitates i -propanol deprotonation, collectively accelerating the overall CTH process. Atomically dispersed noble metal-free Cu(I) sites in Ce-MOF-808 with enhanced catalytic hydrogenation performance

Juan Chen,Linmeng Wang,Hongyi Gao,Rushuo Li,Zhiyuan Liu,Tao Ban,Shunzheng Zhao,Jichao Yang,Ge Wang

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) catalysts have unique electronic properties and geometric structures, offering maximum atom-utilization efficiency. Noble metal-free SACs anchored within metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) enable precise tuning of electronic structures and significantly enhance catalytic activity beyond conventional porous materials. Herein, we synthesized the synthesis of Cu(I)/Ce-MOF-808-EA by anchoring atomically dispersed Cu(II) species onto the open Ce 6 nodes of the Ce-MOF-808 framework, followed by in situ reduction to Cu(I) via ethanol treatment and thermal activation processes. The atomic dispersion and valence transformation of Cu sites on Ce-MOF-808 were confirmed by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The resulting Cu(I)/Ce-MOF-808-EA exhibited outstanding catalytic performance for the hydrogenation of Dicyclopentadiene (DCPD), achieving 100 % conversion, 91.54 % selectivity toward Dihydrodicyclopentadiene (DHDCPD), and 8.45 % selectivity toward Tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (THDCPD) at 100 °C, 2 MPa. Notably, Cu(I)/Ce-MOF-808-EA outperformed other transition metal catalysts (Co/Ce-MOF-808-EA, Ni/Ce-MOF-808-EA and Zn/Ce-MOF-808-EA). For the first time, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, combined with experimental investigations, revealed a low-energy reaction pathway for DCPD hydrogenation, wherein Cu(I) sites, in cooperation with adjacent oxygen atoms, act as bi-active centers to heterolytically cleave H 2 into proton and hydride species (*H δ+ -H δ- ) for subsequent hydrogenation. This study underscores the potential of MOFs as versatile platforms for engineering single-atom catalysts with enhanced catalytic properties.

Facile synthesis of defective Cu/MOF-808 with high Cu utilization for efficient iodide adsorption and mechanistic insights

Minjie Chen,Junjie Tan,Lei Liao,Hao Zou,Ning Pan,Hao Lei,Xiaoqin Nie

The rapid expansion of nuclear medicine has led to the accumulation of large volumes of iodine-containing radioactive wastewater, posing significant threats to both aquatic ecosystems and human health. To address this issue, an environmentally benign and structurally robust adsorbent, Cu-loaded MOF-808, was synthesized via a simple one-pot method. In static batch adsorption experiments, 0.2Cu/MOF-808(1.0) exhibited a maximum iodide adsorption capacity of 188.7 mg g −1 , with an improved Cu utilization efficiency of 51.5 %. Notably, the material maintained a considerable adsorption capacity of 38.3 mg g −1 even under strongly alkaline conditions (pH = 11.0). Moreover, it displayed excellent selectivity toward iodide in the presence of competing anions such as NO 3 − and SO 4 2− . Comprehensive spectroscopic characterization, including extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis, revealed a redox-mediated adsorption mechanism. Specifically, Cu 0 is oxidized to Cu + through interactions with carboxyl groups, followed by electrostatic attraction between Cu + and I − to form CuI, while additional bonding occurs between I − and Zr-O-Zr units to generate Zr-O-I linkages. Overall, this study demonstrates the successful preparation of 0.2Cu/MOF-808(1.0) and underscores its strong potential for efficient iodide removal from radioactive wastewater in nuclear medicine applications.

Synergistic Effects of Poly(ionic liquids)@MOF-808 Nanocomposites for Direct Conversion of Carbon Dioxide into Dimethyl Carbonate

Yunhui Xia,Chengmei Huang,Jingsheng Wang,Guohui Cai,Mengjia Zhang,Jianghui Lin,Ling Li

The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from carbon dioxide (CO2) and methanol (CH3OH) represents one of the most attractive strategies in green chemistry, offering 100% atom economy for CO2 utilization. However, this reaction faces significant thermodynamic and kinetic challenges, limiting its practical application. To overcome these barriers, the development of highly efficient catalysts capable of effectively activating the CO2 is essential to achieve industrially viable DMC yields. Herein, a series of poly(ionic liquids) (PILs)@MOF-808 nanocomposites (including poly[AlDBU]Br@MOF-808, poly[AlDBN]Br@MOF-808, and poly[AlTMG]Br@MOF-808) were successfully synthesized via in situ polymerization. These composites integrate Lewis basic N sites, Lewis acidic Zr centers, and nucleophilic Br– within a MOF-808 framework. The nanocomposites were evaluated in a batch autoclave for the direct synthesis of DMC from CO2 and CH3OH. Among them, poly[AlDBU]Br@MOF-808 showed the highest DMC yield. Through systematic optimization of the poly[AlDBU]Br loading and reaction parameters (including temperature, CO2 pressure, and time), a maximum DMC yield of 2.52 mmol·g–1cat was achieved with poly[AlDBU]Br@MOF-808-0.4 at 120 °C under 3 MPa of CO2 for 5 h. Experimental studies and in situ DRIFTS confirmed the synergistic catalytic effect between MOF-808 and the PILs, highlighting their cooperative role in enhancing CO2 activation and DMC formation. The catalytic performance of poly[AlDBU]Br@MOF-808-0.4 is competitive compared to previously reported catalysts. The fundamental understanding of the synergistic effects between MOF-808 and PILs offers groundbreaking insights for CO2 capture and utilization strategies in direct DMC synthesis.

Fiber optic SPR sensor based on MOF-808 sensitization for interaction detection of Coptisine and DNA G-quadruplex

Yuye Xuan,Yong Wei,Songquan Li,Chunlan Liu,Qian Yang,Zhihai Liu

To detect the degree of interaction between coptisine and different DNA G-quadruplexes (G4s) and screen its anti-cancer targets, this paper developed a highly sensitive fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor using zirconium-based metal organic framework (MOF-808) nanomaterials and plastic coated multimode optical fiber, which solves the problems of background interference and low sensitivity in traditional fluorescence detection method. MOF-808 has the characteristic of high electron mobility, which increases the sensitivity of the sensor to 4869.03   nm/RIU and improves the performance by 107%. Meanwhile, thanks to the ultra-high specific surface area of MOF-808, coptisine is enriched on the sensor surface, providing more G4s binding sites, the detection limit for c-MYC Pu22 G4 is 11.15   nM. Three types of G4s were detected using the sensor, and the sensor showed a significant response to c-MYC Pu22 G4, indicating that coptisine has a strong targeting effect on Pu22 G4, which is consistent with the results of molecular docking simulation, confirming the effectiveness of the sensor as a drug target screening validation tool. This sensor exhibits good specificity, with no significant response to other substances such as double stranded DNA except for the substance being tested, and maintains excellent stability after long-term storage. This work provides a concept validation optical sensing platform for drug target screening.

Heterometallic node engineering of MOF-808 enables diverse frustrated Lewis pairs for efficient transfer hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds

Jianhua Wang,Yi Hu,Xin Xia,Zisheng Xiao,Qiong Xu,Xianxiang Liu,Wenzhou Zhong,Dulin Yin,Hao Yan

Trace Sn incorporation enriches the solid FLP catalytic centers in MOF-808. • 5Sn-MOF-808 shows enhanced pore structure and abundant Lewis acid–base sites. • Zr/Sn-CUS and Zr/Sn-OH pairs cooperatively activate isopropanol and carbonyl substrates. • Sn doping lowers water-desorption and hydrogen-transfer energy barriers. • Heterometallic node engineering enables efficient CTH of carbonyl compounds. The construction of solid frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) catalysts and their application in catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) have attracted considerable attention. A series of M-MOF-808 catalysts was constructed by introducing small amounts of tetravalent heterometal ions into the metal cluster nodes of MOF-808. Among them, 5Sn-MOF-808 exhibited a more developed pore structure, a higher density of Lewis acid sites, and enhanced Lewis basicity, leading to excellent performance in the CTH of a range of carbonyl compounds. Systematic in-situ characterizations, poisoning experiments, and DFT calculations collectively reveal that Sn incorporation induces the formation of high-density and structurally diverse frustrated Lewis pair sites. These sites consist of Zr/Sn coordinatively unsaturated sites (CUS) and adjacent Zr/Sn–OH groups. Such FLP sites cooperatively promote isopropanol activation, carbonyl polarization, and reactive hydrogen transfer. In addition, Sn incorporation lowers the energetic cost for coordinated water desorption and active-site generation. This work establishes a structural correlation between heterometallic node modulation and solid FLP construction in MOFs, providing a rational strategy for designing efficient transfer hydrogenation catalysts. Enhanced Performance of Sulfonated Poly(ether ether Ketone) Hybrid Membranes by Introducing Sulfated MOF-808/Graphene Oxide Composites

Yuan Yuan Cai,Jia Jun Wang,Zhi Hong Cai,Qiu Gen Zhang,Ai Mei Zhu,Qing Lin Liu

High-performance composite proton exchange membranes (PEMs) [SP/SO4-metal-organic framework (MOF)-808@GO] consisting of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) and superacid SO4-MOF-808@GO are fabricated in this work. The composite PEMs obtain higher proton conductivity and fuel cell performance than pure SP. SO4-MOF-808 grains are uniformly deposited on the GO surface, which prevents the agglomeration of the MOF grains and thus ensures a good dispersity of MOFs in the membranes. The superacid sites in SO4-MOF-808@GO bind abundant water, which enhances proton transfer at a low humidity. The water retention ability of the SP/SO4-MOF-808@GO composite membrane outperforms that of pure SP. Benefiting from the optimized SO4-MOF-808@GO structure, the proton conductivity of SP/SO4-MOF-808@GO is up to 0.196 S cm–1 under 70 °C–90% RH and 0.0434 S cm–1 under 90 °C–40% RH, 2.63- and 7.44-fold that of pure SP, respectively. Moreover, the single cell assembled with SP/SO4-MOF-808@GO attains a 70.28% increase over pure SP in power density. Collectively, the results suggest that the SP/SO4-MOF-808@GO membrane has potential application in PEMs.

Performance of defective Zr-MOFs for the adsorption of anionic dyes

Liu Boyu,Liu Moxi,Xie Zhiyuan,Li Yiru,Zhang Aibo

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), a new type of porous functional material, have attracted widespread attention in the field of adsorption separation, medicine, and catalysis, etc., due to their unique adjustable pore structure and large specific surface. The defective zirconium-based MOF is rich in terminal Zr–OH induced by the lack of linkers and the μ3-OH originating from the Zr cluster, exhibiting high affinity for the carboxyl and sulfonic acid groups in the dyes. We report the performance of two defective zirconium-based MOFs (MOF-808 and MIL-140C) to remove Eosin y (EY), Methyl orange (MO), and Orange g from the water. Owing to the strong affinity, larger specific surface area, and better-matched pore structure, MOF-808 exhibits higher adsorption capacity for EY and MO, with maximum adsorption capacities of 661.7 mg g −1 and 532.4 mg g −1 , respectively. The adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, adsorption cycle performance, and adsorption mechanism of two MOFs for three dyes were investigated. Adsorption thermodynamics and XPS analysis certified that both chemical adsorption and physical adsorption occur during the adsorption process, especially chemical adsorption. Desorption and regeneration tests demonstrate that both MOF-808 and MIL-140C maintained their high adsorption capacity after four cycles, indicating two MOFs are favorable candidates for removing pollutants. Graphical abstract In this article, the adsorption performance of MOF-808 and MIL-140C on three different sizes and structures of anionic dyes is mainly studied. The results show that MOF-808 has better adsorption performance for EY and MO. At the same time, the adsorption results show that the chemical adsorption between the adsorbate and the MOFs material plays a leading role in the adsorption, resulting in a high adsorption capacity for EY, although the EY molecule has a larger molecular size.

In situ construction of MOF-808@β-cyclodextrin composite nanofibers for simultaneous 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid removal and antibacterial applications

Shushu Jia,Tianyi Yang,Ping Lin,Yue Li,Han Zhang,Lijuan Li,Ce Wang,Xiang Li

The widespread use of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) as an herbicide has led to its persistent accumulation in water bodies, posing significant environmental challenges. Conventional adsorbents often suffer from reduced efficiency due to bacterial fouling. Therefore, designing multifunctional adsorbents that combine high herbicide adsorption capacity with robust antimicrobial properties is crucial. Herein, a novel, efficient and antibacterial MOF-808@β-cyclodextrin composite nanofiber membrane (MOF-808@CP) is synthesized for 2,4-D removal. The integration of MOF-808 and β-cyclodextrin based nanofibers increases the adsorption sites, synergistically enhancing the adsorption ability. MOF-808@CP demonstrates a high adsorption capacity for 2,4-D, reaching 169.82 mg/g, along with strong antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (98.42 %) and Staphylococcus aureus (96.73 %). The membrane also exhibits excellent regeneration capability and strong resistance to interference from co-existing substances. Furthermore, the membrane demonstrates excellent recyclability and effectively treats real 2,4-D contaminated water, reducing the chemical oxygen demand concentration of 2,4-D significantly to satisfy the pesticide sewage discharge standard. This study provides a viable strategy for developing multifunctional adsorption membranes for practical pesticide wastewater treatment.

Fabrication and TA@MOF-808 modification of new thin-film composite membranes for effective retrieval of ionic rare earths

Zhaohuang Zhong,Xindong Li,Lijinhong Huang,Siwei Yu,Jianghui Jia,Jiaju Huang,Meng Cai,Qinyan Zhu,Luo Bao,Wanfu Huang

Retrieval of rare earth ions from dilute wastewater produced from in-situ leach mining is a crucial approach to effectively mitigate the shortage of rare earth resources, and the employment of the membrane technology for recuperation of ionic rare earths is an energy-efficient and eco-friendly solution. In this study to optimize the use of the membrane technology for ionic rare earths recovery, TA@MOF-808 was fabricated by combining tannic acid (TA) with MOF-808 and then incorporated as nanoparticles into a polyetherimide (PEI) base membrane. On this basis, PA/PEI-TA@MOF-808 thin-film composite membranes were prepared via interfacial polymerization. TA@MOF-808 with its hydroxyl and carboxyl functional groups generated hydrogen and covalent bonds with the secondary amine groups of piperazine (PIP), which stored PIP and regulated its diffusion rate into the organic phase. Thereby, the membrane surface charge was modulated under acidic conditions, and a separation layer was reconstituted, improving the structural and operational stability of the membranes. The PA/PEI-TA@MOF-808 membrane exhibited a water flux of 42.1 L·m −2 ·h −1 , and La 3+ , Y 3+ , and Gd 3+ retention rates of 97.7 %, 96.7 % and 97.4 %, respectively. Separation tests, acid resistance tests, long-term operational stability tests and actual rare earth wastewater treatment tests revealed the PA/PEI-TA@MOF-808 membrane possessed outstanding ionic rare earth separation capability, consistent membrane flux, notable acid resistance, and operational stability, suggesting a bright future in the application for ionic rare earth recovery.
