Introducing MXenes into the Heterogeneous Catalyst: Synthesizing Mo2CTx@Fe3O4 with Excellent Recoverability to Degrade Methylisothiazolinone in the Electro-Fenton System

Liping Wei,Kexin Zhou,Qian Rao,Hui-qiang Li,Ping Yang

Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) is a commonly used bactericide in wastewater treatment. Residual MIT in wastewater can lead to high environmental risks and toxicity. In this work, an emerging material MXenes has been introduced into the heterogeneous electro-Fenton catalysts to degrade MIT. Ti3C2Tx@Fe3O4, V2CTx@Fe3O4, and Mo2CTx@Fe3O4 were assessed as catalysts for MIT removal. The reasons for the differences among the three catalyst effects were analyzed according to different characterization results. Mo2CTx@Fe3O4 exhibited the best catalytic activity for MIT degradation. At pH = 3, the removal rate of MIT and corresponding chemical oxygen demand of catalyst Mo2CTx@Fe3O4 were 93.41% and 62.46% after 120 min.Among the three catalysts, Mo2CTx@Fe3O4 had larger surface area and porosity. Mo2CTx@Fe3O4 had the highest surface iron content, which meant that Fe3O4 was more easily loaded on the surface of Mo2CTX. What is more, Mo2CTX had the strongest ability to accelerate the regeneration of Fe2+. The durability of Mo2CTx@Fe3O4 was also evaluated. After four cycles, the removal efficiency of MIT only decreased from 92.51% to 89%. This work supports the development of heterogeneous electro-Fenton catalysts and the degradation of MIT.

MXenes-integrated microneedle combined with asiaticoside to penetrate the cuticle for treatment of diabetic foot ulcer

Wang Pei,Wang Yun,Yi Yang,Gong Yan,Ji Haoran,Gan Yuci,Xie Fei,Fan Jinchen,Wang Xiansong

Patients with diabetic foot ulcers usually suffer from inefficient epithelisation and angiogenesis accompanied by chronic wound healing. Diabetic foot ulcers remain a major challenge in clinical medicine; however, traditional treatments are incapable of transdermal drug delivery, resulting in a low drug delivery rate. We report the development of Ti 2 C 3 MXenes-integrated poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) hydrogel microneedles to release asiaticoside (MN-MXenes-AS). Asiaticoside was loaded into PGA-MXenes hydrogel to facilitate cell proliferation while regulating angiogenesis. The characterisation and mechanical strength of the microneedles were investigated in vitro, and the wound-healing efficacy of the microneedles was confirmed in diabetic mice. MXenes significantly improved the mechanical strength of microneedles, while γ-PGA hydrogels provided a moist microenvironment for wound healing. Mice treated with MN-MXenes-AS demonstrated obvious improvements in wound healing process. We successfully fabricated an MXenes-integrated microneedle that possesses sufficient rigidity to penetrate the cuticle for subcutaneous drug delivery, thereby accelerating diabetic wound healing. We demonstrated that MN-MXenes-AS is effective in promoting growth both in vivo and in vitro. Collectively, our data show that MN-MXenes-AS accelerated the healing of diabetic foot ulcers, supporting the use of these microneedles in the treatment of chronic wounds. Graphical Abstract

Fabrication of β-CD/SiO2@rGO/MXenes composite materials with three-dimensional structures for sensitive detection of baicalin in Chinese medicine

YuXuan Xiong,Dandan Luo,Guowen He,Saiwen Liu,Jin Zhang,Chao Chen

Baicalin is a principal component of traditional Chinese medicine and plays a crucial role in treating conditions such as arthritis, respiratory tract infections, chronic and acute hepatitis, and tumors. Graphene oxide is bonded to silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) through covalent bonds or hydrogen bonds and then reduced to SiO 2 @rGO through hydrazine hydrate to solve the problem of easy accumulation of SiO 2 and improve the conductivity of the material. Next, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) self-assembles on SiO 2 @rGO to form a stable inclusion complex. The hydrophobic inner cavity of β-CD can effectively accommodate various guest molecules to form inclusion complexes, enhancing molecular recognition and detection capabilities. Finally, β-CD/SiO 2 @rGO is bridged and surface-loaded between clay-like Ti 3 C 2 T x (MXenes) nanosheets through electrostatic interactions to form a stable three-dimensional composite material. It is precisely because of MXenes, due to their unique layered microstructure, excellent conductivity, and extensive hydrophilic surface area, that they are conducive to self-assembly or embedding nanoparticles in aqueous solution. The composite was characterized via X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Under optimized conditions, the electrochemical sensor constructed from this composite exhibited a broad detection range (0.008–10 μM) and a low detection limit (0.191 nM) for baicalin. In comparison to existing methods for detecting baicalin, this approach demonstrates strong anti-interference capabilities and stability. It can efficiently, sensitively, and accurately quantify baicalin in Chinese patent medicine samples, including Scutellaria baicalensis root, Shuanghuanglian oral liquid, and Bear Bile Scutellaria baicalensis eye drops, achieving a satisfactory recovery rate. This study introduces a novel approach for the electrochemical detection of baicalin.

A novel one-step strategy for preparation of Fe3O4-loaded Ti3C2 MXenes with high efficiency for removal organic dyes

Yi Cui,Meiying Liu,Hongye Huang,Dongao Zhang,Junyu Chen,Liucheng Mao,Naigen Zhou,Fengjie Deng,Xiaoyong Zhang,Yen Wei

Transition-metal carbides, nitrides or carbonitrides (named as MXenes) are a novel type of two-dimensional (2D) materials with the features of traditional 2D materials but more variable chemical compositions. MXenes and related materials have raised more and more research attention and been extensively explored for different applications. In this work, we developed a novel method to synthesize magnetic MXene composites (Ti 3 C 2 -MNPs) for the first time through a one-pot route, which relied on the incorporation of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles into Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets via thermal treatment. The potential utilization of these Ti 3 C 2 -MNPs for catalytic degradation of organic dyes through advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) were also evaluated in details. We demonstrated that Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles with size about 5 nm could be anchored onto Ti 3 C 2 with well dispersed state. The catalytic degradation results demonstrated that Ti 3 C 2 -MNPs possess extremely high degradation efficiency towards different organic dyes under optimal conditions. The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra identified that both hydroperoxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide radicals (•O 2 - ) radicals were involved in the degradation process. This work reported a novel one-step method for fabrication MXenes based multifunctional composites, which show extremely high efficiency for AOPs. This method could also be extended for fabrication of many other multifunctional composites for various applications.

A novel multimodal nano-sensor detection system based on artificial intelligence and two-dimensional Mxenes for Ochratoxin A in food

Qi Liu,Sutong Li,Zongyi Li,Caifeng Zou,Shi Feng,Juncheng Song,Jie Zhang,Xiangyang Li

Ochratoxin A (OTA), which is prone to contaminating food products, poses a significant threat to human health. To accurately detect and provide timely early warnings for OTA contamination (COTA) in food, a novel four-modal nano-biosensor detection system based on MXenes was developed in this work. MXenes is a new family of two-dimensional materials including vanadium carbide (V 2 C) MXenes, which has great potential in the field of biosensing and detection due to its large specific surface area, rich surface functional groups, and good chemical stability. By in-situ chemical etching, metal ion intercalation, and synergistic physical exfoliation techniques, V 2 C nano-materials (V 2 C-NMS) with excellent fluorescence quenching characteristics were synthesized, and V 2 C-NMS@ssDNA with excellent peroxidase like activity was constructed by functionalizing V 2 C-NMS with adapter. Based on this, a fluorescence/colorimetric biosensor for OTA was constructed, and the fluorescence/colorimetric signal output by the sensor had good linear relationship with COTA, with the detection limit (LOD) as low as 6.77 pg mL −1 . Furthermore, a fully connected artificial neural network (FCANN) was developed based on a series of RGB values obtained from the fluorescence/colorimetric mode of the biosensor, and the fluorescence/colorimetry channel of the FCANN could accurately predict the COTA of the sample on-site or remotely in just a few seconds, with the LOD as low as 7.10 pg mL −1 . Importantly, the four-mode method performed well in real sample detection, with recovery rates ranging from 95.33% to 105.79%, and the detection results of the four modalities could be mutually verified.

Stabilizing Ti3C2Tx-MXenes with TiOF2 nanospheres intercalation to improve hydrogen evolution reaction and humidity-sensing performance

Zhenguo Wang,Ke Yu,Yu Feng,Ruijuan Qi,Jie Ren,Ziqiang Zhu

MXenes, a new class of two-dimensional materials, possessing high electrical conductivity and unique surface properties, have exhibited great potential as non-noble metal catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, due to poor oxidation resistance , they are easily oxidized in aqueous solution and high humidity environment, resulting in a great loss of electronic properties and surface reactivity. Herein, we report a simple and effective composite synthesis strategy with TiOF 2 intercalation to improve the stability of MXenes materials. TiOF 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x prepared by this strategy shows ultra-long catalytic activity life of 1000 cycles in acid electrolyte. Besides, the catalyst also shows high HER activity with a low onset potential of 103 mV and a Tafel slope as low as 56.2 mV dec − 1 . Benefiting from the stabilization of TiOF 2 and the physicochemical properties of Ti 3 C 2 T x , TiOF 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x also exhibits excellent humidity sensitivity and stability.

Unlocking Exceptional EMI Shielding in Ti₃C₂Tₓ MXenes through Controlled Microstructure and Surface Chemistry

Shahzad Hussain,Resham Siddique,Muhammad Nadeem,Eman Zafar,Sadia Manzoor,Jawwad A Darr

The rapid advancement of highly integrated electronics demands next generation electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials that combine lightweight, ultrathin, flexible, and mechanically robust properties with exceptional shielding effectiveness (SE) to mitigate signal crosstalk and ensure device reliability. In this work, we demonstrate the fabrication of high-performance EMI shields using highly conductive, additive-free aqueous Ti3C2Tx (T = O, OH, Cl, F) MXene dispersions synthesized under both harsh and mild etching conditions. These dispersions were engineered into freestanding thin films and functionalized cotton fabrics via vacuum-assisted filtration, enabling tunable EMI shielding properties through precise control of etchant chemistry, flake size, microstructure, thickness, and MXene loading. The EMI shielding improved with film thickness and the 13 μm thick film demonstrated exceptional EMI shielding of 60 dB. The freestanding heat treated Ti3C2Tx film with minimal thickness of 5 µm achieved a remarkable shielding effectiveness of 71 dB (which is 37% higher than the untreated film) corresponding to 99.99999% EMI attenuation. This film also exhibited an ultrahigh absolute shielding effectiveness (SSET) of 72,300 dB cm2 g−1, surpassing all previously reported MXene-based shields of comparable thickness. The improved stability was attributed to thermal conversion of surface OH groups to O-terminations, reducing interflake spacing and enhancing conductivity. The coated cotton fabric achieved an unprecedented SE of 82 dB due to the excellent wave attenuation associated with its porous structure. Notably, the fabric retained its shielding performance even after six months of ambient exposure, highlighting exceptional environmental stability. This study establishes critical structure-property relationships, revealing that induced porosity, meta-structure effects, large flake size, and optimized surface terminations synergistically enhance EMI shielding. By elucidating the interplay between material parameters and shielding performance, this work provides a foundational framework for designing advanced EMI mitigation technologies, paving the way for scalable, high-performance shielding solutions in next-generation flexible and wearable electronics.

Lewis acid molten salts prepared Ti3C2Cl2 MXenes assembling with g-C3N4 nanosheets for enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution

Hongmiao Zhou,Jiayi Tian,Ruoyu Wang,Difu Zhan,Peng Liu,Ruolin Chen,Yizhong Huang,Zhifeng Liu,Changcun Han

Photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) evolution is expected to be a promising approach to generating a clean energy source (H 2 ) with low carbon emissions, which is vital to solving environmental degradation and energy shortages. The critical challenge to designing highly efficient photocatalysts is the fast recombination of photo-generated carriers; thus, we select Ti 3 C 2 Cl 2 MXene with excellent metal characteristics to serve as a co-catalyst and combine with g-C 3 N 4 . The Ti 3 C 2 Cl 2 /g-C 3 N 4 composites exhibit an enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity (maximum 155.9 μmol h −1 ) while they hardly perform photocatalytic activities. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra shows that Ti 3 C 2 Cl 2 MXenes help boost the separation of photo-generated carriers of g-C 3 N 4 and finally strengthen the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. The ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectra illustrate that composites perform a strengthened light absorption, which fits well with the results in the hydrogen evolution experiment. Thus, we fabricated a highly efficient photocatalyst through a safer molten salt approach without hydrofluoric acid (HF). We believe this work will offer a safer approach to manufacturing catalysts decorated with MXenes for highly efficient photocatalytic H 2 evolution.

Achieving high electrical conductivity, energy storage capacity and cycling stability in ammoniated Mo2TiC2Tx MXenes as an anode for lithium-ion batteries

Jingya Liu,Xin Xu,Hongkang Wang,Peng-Fei Wang,Kai Wu,Yonghong Cheng,Bing Xiao

The ammonization treatment is applied to a prototype ordered double-transition metal MXene known as Mo2TiC2Tx at different annealing temperatures (400, 500 and 600 °C) and durations (1 h and 2 h). The lattice structures, micro-morphologies, and chemical compositions of the resulting ammoniated MXenes are characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS and EPMA. All ammoniated MXenes preserve the layered microstructure of the parent carbide 2D material, and N atoms are successfully doped into the lattice sites to form carbonitride MXenes, denoted as Mo2Ti(C1−δNδ)2Tx. The Hall measurements are carried out to evaluate the electrical conductivity of ammoniated MXenes and raw Mo2TiC2Tx, and the results indicate that the carbonitride forms exhibit higher electrical conductivities and electron concentrations than the raw 2D material. The electrochemical properties of ammoniated MXenes are investigated by means of charge–discharge cycling CV tests, the GITT and EIS measurements at various scan rates. The ammoniated MXene sample (N400-1h) could deliver a storage capacity of 750 mA h g−1 (200 mA h g−1) at a current density of 0.03 A g−1 (2 A g−1). It is found that the capacitive charge storage mechanism through the intercalation reaction process dominates the total capacity for the ammoniated MXenes. The diffusion dynamics of Li+ in all investigated MXene electrodes show a two-stage lithiation mechanism in which the apparent diffusion coefficient is regulated by the different numbers of vacancies in the absorbate layers at various lithiation stages in the GITT curves. Overall, ammoniated MXenes also show superior performances in Li+ diffusion dynamics and charge transfer kinetics at the electrode–electrolyte interface to those of raw Mo2TiC2Tx, elucidating a new avenue for the use of ammoniated double-transition metal o-MXenes as high-performance electrode materials for LIBs and supercapacitors in the future.

Entropy-Mediated High-Entropy MXenes Nanotherapeutics: NIR-II-Enhanced Intrinsic Oxidase Mimic Activity to Combat Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Infection

Xiaojun He,Yuna Qian,Chenglin Wu,Jiayao Feng,Xiaoshuai Sun,Qinxiang Zheng,Xiaokun Li,Jianliang Shen

Bacterial infections, such as bacterial keratitis (BK) and subcutaneous abscess, pose significant challenges to global healthcare. Innovative and new antibacterial agents and antibacterial strategies are in demand to control infections in this era of high drug resistance. Nanotechnology is gradually emerging as an economically feasible and effective anti-infection treatment. High-entropy MXenes (HE MXenes) are used to confer desirable properties with exposed active sites to high-entropy atomic layers, whose potential application in the field of biomedicine remains to be explored. Herein, monolayer HE MXenes are fabricated by implementing transition metals with high entropy and low Gibbs free energy to fill the gap in the biocatalytic performance of non-high-entropy MXenes. HE MXenes are endowed with extremely strong oxidase mimic activity ( K m = 0.227 m m ) and photothermal conversion efficiency (65.8%) in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) biowindow as entropy increases. Subsequently, HE MXenes realize NIR-II-enhanced intrinsic oxidase mimic activity for killing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and rapidly removing the biofilm. Furthermore, HE MXenes can effectively treat BK and subcutaneous abscess infection induced by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus as nanotherapeutic agents with minuscule side effects. Overall, monolayer HE MXenes demonstrate promising clinical application potential in the treatment of drug-resistant bacterial infections and promote the healing of infected tissues.

Ag-Ti3C2Tx MXenes nanoribbons coupled with carbon nanotubes: Preparation, characterization and application for highly sensitive ratiometric voltammetric sensing of paracetamol

Yong Zhao,Yixuan Xia,Juerui Zhang,Hongde Liu,Yinhui Yi,Gangbing Zhu

In this work, based on the unique self-adsorption and reduction capacities of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes toward silver ion, silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) as reference probe are synthesized and immobilized on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x nanoribbons (Ti 3 C 2 T x R) to form Ag-Ti 3 C 2 T x R nanohybrid with a simple stirring-method, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are introduced to conjugate Ag-Ti 3 C 2 T x R for inhibiting their aggregation and improving further the sensing performance. Via selecting paracetamol (PA) as a model analyte, a ratiometric voltammetric sensing strategy is proposed by using Ag-Ti 3 C 2 T x R/CNTs as electrode materials on the basic of the collaborative advantages of Ag NPs, Ti 3 C 2 T x R and CNTs: in the absence of PA, Ag-Ti 3 C 2 T x R/CNTs modified electrode displays only an electrochemical signal from the oxidation of Ag 0 ; while in the presence of PA, a varied signal of PA along with its concentration can be observed coupled with a quite stable oxidation signal of Ag 0 . Based on this principle, a highly sensitive and reliable ratiometric sensing platform is designed for PA detection by recording the ratio of signals between PA and Ag 0 . It’s expected that this work exploits a new research field in electrochemical sensors by combining the synthetic advantages of MXenes and metal elements.
