Gallic acid (GA) is an allelochemical that has been utilized in high concentrations for the management of harmful algal blooms (HABs). However, there is limited knowledge regarding its impact on the growth of M. aeruginosa as the GA concentration transitions from high to low during the HABs control process. This study has revealed that as the GA concentration decreases (from 10 mg/L to 0.001 μg/L), a dose-response relationship becomes apparent in the growth of M. aeruginosa and microcystin production, characterized by high-dose inhibition and low-dose stimulation. Notably, at the concentration of 0.1 μg/L GA, the most significant growth-promoting effect on both growth and MCs synthesis was observed. The growth rate and maximum cell density were increased by 1.09 and 1.16 times, respectively, compared to those of the control group. Additionally, the contents of MCs synthesis saw a remarkable increase, up by 1.85 times. Furthermore, lower GA concentrations stimulated the viability of cyanobacterial cells, resulting in substantially higher levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and chlorophyll-a (Chl a ) compared to other concentrations. Most importantly, the expression of genes governing MCs synthesis was significantly upregulated, which appears to be the primary driver behind the significantly higher MCs levels compared to other conditions. The ecological risk quotient (RQ) value of 0.1 μg/L GA was the highest of all experimental groups, which was approximately 30 times higher than that of the control, indicating moderate risk. Therefore, it is essential to pay attention to the effect of M. aeruginosa growth, metabolism and water ecological risk under the process of reducing GA concentration after dosing during the HABs control process.

Targeting and selectivity are essential for assessing the effectiveness of ecofriendly algaecides in controlling toxic cyanobacterial blooms. The dose- and time-dependent effects of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), pyrogallol and their sustained-release microspheres (HRM, PRM) on proportion of MC-producing cell numbers and genotypes of the co-existing MC- and non-MC-producing Microcystis , as well as microcystins (MCs) concentrations were investigated in the present study. Two MC-producing and two non-MC-producing Microcystis strains were used in mono- and co-culture test systems. The findings revealed that the MC-producing Microcystis strains were more sensitive to both forms of H 2 O 2 and pyrogallol in comparison with the non-MC-producing strains. Inhibition of all Microcystis strains by H 2 O 2 and pyrogallol was found to be dose- and time-dependent, with H 2 O 2 exhibiting stronger effects. Additionally, both pure and granular forms of H 2 O 2 and pyrogallol reduced the relative abundance of MC-producing genotypes in co-culture conditions, along with total MC concentrations. The HRM and PRM demonstrated more potent and prolonged effects than their pure forms, indicating they are optimal for targeted reduction of Microcystis bloom toxicity. The release rate of MCs into the extracellular environment of Microcystis may exceed their degradation rate during H 2 O 2 and pyrogallol treatments. It resulted in elevated extracellular MC levels after treatment. Therefore, ongoing monitoring of environmental MCs is necessary following the inhibition of Microcystis population growth by algaecides.

Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ , two ubiquitous metals in water environments, can widely trigger algae blooms at favourable environmental conditions. This paper elucidates the roles of Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ in the proliferation of Microcystis aeruginosa ( M. aeruginosa ) and synthesis of Microcystins (MCs). Findings indicate significant influences of increasing Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ concentrations on cell proliferation at limited available phosphorus concentrations of less than 0.1 mg/L. By contrast, Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ notably affected MCs production at all the inoculated phosphorus concentrations. The critical concentrations of 1 μg/L and 5 μg/L for Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ , respectively, are determined to trigger rapid cell proliferation and MCs production. Furthermore, the impacts of Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ on nitrogen absorption and, subsequently, on amino acids (AAs) formation in cells, is likely key in MCs synthesis. The two AAs Alanine (Ala) and glutamic acid (Glu) demonstrate the most notable variations with the concentrations of Cu 2+ & Zn 2+ .

Efficient treatment of cyanobacterial blooms in eutrophication waters by safe and reliable nanomaterials is a big challenge for reducing environmental health risks. Herein, a novel strategy combining palladium clusters (Pd n ) with g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposite was presented to achieve high-efficient removal of Microcystis aeruginosa cells through coagulation and breakage. Interestingly, 95.17% of algal cells (initial concentration of 5.6 × 10 6 cells mL −1 ) were promptly removed in the Pd/g-C 3 N 4 (5%) system within only 10 min and without visible light irradiation and persulfate activation. Both the release of potassium ion and microcystin during the removal process and the transmission electron microscope observations of Microcystis aeruginosa cells proved that the integrity of the algal cell membrane was destroyed. The removal of Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) were further confirmed in the next process. Pd metal interaction and breakage against algal cells may cause disruption of algal cells. This study describes a novel technology for the superfast removal of harmful algae and may provide a new insight into the control of cyanobacterial blooms in practical applications.

In this study, the feasibility of removing Microcystis aeruginosa by heterogeneous persulfate activation using ubiquitous natural pyrite was investigated. The results indicated the significant degradation efficiency of chlorophyll-a (over 90%) was obtained in pyrite/persulfate (PS) system, which was influenced by various experimental parameters, including pyrite loading, PS dosage, the initial pH and coexisting common anions. The EPR, SEM, TEM, XPS and zeta potential analysis indicated that the reactive oxygen species ( ∙ S O 4 - , ·OH, · O 2 - and 1 O 2 ) generated during PS activation using pyrite played an essential role in facilitate the destabilization of algae cells to further destroyed them, while the continuous formation of oxidation layer consisting of FeOOH and Fe 2 O 3 on pyrite surface and dissolved Fe(III) could favor coagulation of algae. Furthermore, pyrite/PS system was not only effective in destructing the cellular morphology and reducing the viability of algae, but also able to control algal organic matter, which could avoid yielding serious secondary pollution. This study highlighted the dual role of iron species as both catalyst and coagulant for M. aeruginosa removal and demonstrated that it is highly advantageous to employ pyrite/persulfate system with high-efficiency and cost-effectiveness to eliminate algae.

In this study, the sodium perborate (SP)-activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process was used to enhance the coagulation efficiency of cyanobacteria with polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC), aiming to efficiently mitigate the impact of algal blooms on the safety of drinking water production. The optimal concentrations of SP, PMS, and PAC were determined by evaluating the removal rate of OD680and zeta potential of the algae. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed ternary PMS/SP/PAC process achieved a remarkable OD680removal efficiency of 95.2%, significantly surpassing those obtained from individual treatments with PMS (19.5%), SP (5.2%), and PAC (42.1%), as well as combined treatments with PMS/PAC (55.7%) and PMS/SP (28%). The synergistic effect of PMS/SP/PAC led to the enhanced aggregation of cyanobacteria cells due to a substantial reduction in their zeta potential. Flow cytometry was performed to investigate cell integrity before and after treatment with PMS/SP/PAC. Disinfection by-products (DBPs) (sodium hypochlorite disinfection) of the algae-laden water subsequent to PMS/SP/PAC treatment declined by 57.1%. Moreover, microcystin-LR was completely degraded by PMS/SP/PAC. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis evidenced the continuous production ofSO4•−, •OH,1O2, andO2•−, contributing to both cell destruction and organic matter degradation. This study highlighted the significant potential offered by the PMS/SP/PAC process for treating algae-laden water.

To mitigate the profound impact of Microcystis aeruginosa algal bloom outbreaks on aquatic ecosystems and human health, a piezoelectric T-BaTiO 3 /Ag 3 PO 4 -PVDF composite photocatalyst (T-BTO/AP-PVDF) was successfully synthesized in this study. The catalyst inactivated 97.12% of Microcystis aeruginosa within 4 h by the combined effect of ultrasound and sunlight, and the inactivation rate remained above 88% after five cycles of reuse, which exhibits excellent inactivation effectiveness and stability. Under the conditions of piezo-photocatalytic, the analysis of the physiological properties of algal cells showed that T-BTO/AP-PVDF produced a large amount of •OH, which were active species that could effectively inactivate the algal cells and promote the degradation of organic matter, thus preventing the occurrence of secondary pollution. The composite photocatalysts were characterized using XRD, SEM, XPS, FTIR, PFM, and WCA. Combined with the results of quenching experiments, possible mechanisms for the inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa by T-BTO/AP-PVDF were proposed. The application results in actual water bodies further proved that T-BTO/AP-PVDF is a new method for effectively inhibiting cyanobacterial bloom outbreaks and shows promising potential for application.

Breaking the vicious cycle of “phosphorus (P) enrichment– Microcystis blooms–endogenous P release” at the source is a pivotal strategy for addressing cyanobacterial bloom contamination. Herein, lanthanum (La) engineered metal-azolate framework (LaMs) were developed, structurally characterized, and applied for the simultaneous removal of Microcystis aeruginosa ( M. aeruginosa ) and P. The inhibition rate of M. aeruginosa treated with only 10 mg L −1 LaMs quickly reached 77% after 72 h, while the P removal rate attained 89%. Meanwhile, LaMs exhibited strong pH adaptability and anti-ion interference ability. The mechanism of dual functionality was attributed to their capacity to expeditiously destroy the photosystem of M. aeruginosa , thereby inducing excessive oxidative stress response. Furthermore, the positive charges on its surface and La 3+ achieved multi-layer chemical adsorption of P. Impressively, the LaMs treatment of simulated P-rich Microcystis blooms was highly effective. After 120 h of treatment, M. aeruginosa turned yellow and died, and the P content decreased from 1 mg L −1 to approximately 0.1 mg L −1 . This study provided a eutrophication-control agent, laying the foundation for the comprehensive management of eutrophication and cyanobacterial blooms.

Biologically controllingMicrocystis aeruginosablooms in saline–alkaline environments remains a major challenge in aquatic ecosystem management. Here, the algicidal performance of an indigenous algicidal bacterium,Bacillus cereusstrain PT1 isolated from a sulfate-type saline–alkaline pond, againstM. aeruginosawas evaluated, and the underlying metabolic mechanisms were elucidated using non-targeted metabolomics. PT1 exhibited pronounced, stable algicidal activity under saline–alkaline conditions, decreasing the algal cell density from 2 × 106to 1.25 ± 0.5 × 105cells mL−1within 4 days at a rate of 93.75 ± 2.5% (p< 0.05). The above results demonstrate that strain PT1 has a significant lytic effect onM. aeruginosa. Non-targeted liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis identified 298 PT1-induced accumulated metabolic features, and the top 30 candidates comprised organic acids and aromatic compounds, including benzoic acid, coumarin, malonic acid, and signaling-related molecules, including indoleacetaldehyde and nitroprusside. These differential metabolites were associated with algicidal-related pathways, including quorum sensing, two-component systems, ABC transporters, and tryptophan metabolism, outlining a coordinated “regulation–transport–metabolic remodeling” framework. Our findings demonstrate the potential of the indigenous algicidal strain PT1 from saline–alkali ponds to controlM. aeruginosablooms. They also provide an important theoretical basis and data foundation for further elucidating the molecular characteristics of algae solubilizing activity under saline–alkali conditions and developing microbial agents for preventing and controllingMicrocystisblooms in saline–alkali ponds.

Artemisinin , a novel plant allelochemical , has attracted attention for its potential selective inhibitory effects on algae, yet to be fully explored. This study compares the sensitivity and action targets of Microcystis aeruginosa ( M. aeruginosa ) and Chlorella pyrenoidosa ( C. pyrenoidosa ) to artemisinin algaecide (AMA), highlighting their differences. Results indicate that at high concentrations, AMA displaces the natural PQ at the Q B binding site within M. aeruginosa photosynthetic system , impairing the D1 protein repair function. Furthermore, AMA disrupts electron transfer from reduced ferredoxin (Fd) to NADP + by interfering with the iron-sulfur clusters in the ferredoxin-NADP + reductases (FNR) domain of Fd. Moreover, significant reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation triggers oxidative stress and interrupts the tricarboxylic acid cycle , hindering energy acquisition. Notably, AMA suppresses arginine synthesis in M. aeruginosa , leading to reduced microcystins (MCs) release. Conversely, C. pyrenoidosa counters ROS accumulation via photosynthesis protection, antioxidant defenses, and by regulating intracellular osmotic pressure , accelerating damaged protein degradation , and effectively repairing DNA for cellular detoxification . Additionally, AMA stimulates the expression of DNA replication-related genes, facilitating cell proliferation . Our finding offer a unique approach for selectively eradicating cyanobacteria while preserving beneficial algae, and shed new light on employing eco-friendly algicides with high specificity.

Harmful Microcystis blooms (HMBs) and their hepatotoxic metabolites microcystins (MCs) pose escalating threats to aquatic biodiversity and public health due to their recalcitrance to conventional remediation approaches. To address this dual challenge, mesoporous silica (MSN) and hollow mesoporous organosilica (HMON) nanostructures were engineered via structure-guided design principles, enabling the development of the crude extract microcystinase A (CMlrA)-tailored immobilized platform (CMlrA@MSN and CMlrA@HMON) for synchronized HMBs suppression and MCs detoxification. Systematic optimization of carrier physicochemical properties (including specific surface area, hydrophilicity, and pore size) significantly enhanced the immobilization efficiency and catalytic durability of CMlrA. Kinetic modeling revealed 201.3% and 44.1% K cat / K m enhancements in MC-LR degradation for CMlrA@MSN and CMlrA@HMON relative to free CMlrA. Immobilized enzyme systems achieved 77.06% and 83.03% growth inhibition rates in Microcystis aeruginosa FACHB-905 after six-day treatment. This biocatalytic immobilization strategy establishes an eco-efficient framework for synergistic HMB suppression and MC degradation, providing the technical groundwork for practical water remediation systems.

In recent years, the frequent occurrence of algal blooms has posed continuous threats to aquatic ecosystems and social safety. Environmentally friendly algae-inhibiting methods utilizing allelopathic substances offer advantages such as convenient application and low costs, presenting a bright application prospect in the fields of water and ecological restoration. This study aimed to investigate the procedure for extracting total flavonoids from Zanthoxylum bungeanum leaves and assess allelopathic mechanism of Z. bungeanum leaf extracts on Microcystis aeruginosa . The optimal extraction conditions were determined as follows: solvent-to-material ratio = 10 mL/g; extraction time = 55 min; ethanol volume fraction = 80%; and ultrasonic temperature = 80 °C. Antioxidant activity tests revealed that Z. bungeanum leaf extracts exhibit superior capacity compared to Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) but inferior to Vitamin C (VC). Moreover, high-concentration Z. bungeanum leaf extracts can disrupt the structures of oxygen-evolving complexes at the donor sides of photosystem II (PSII) reaction center and influence energy distribution at PSII reaction centers, thereby inhibiting electron transmission activities at both donor and receptor sides of the PSII reaction center. The elucidated allelopathic mechanism of Z. bungeanum leaf extracts provides theoretical evidence for the algal-bloom control and the development of allelopathic algae-inhibiting agents, offering a reference for the further comprehensive development and utilization of Z. bungeanum . Graphical High-concentration Z. bungeanum leaf extracts can disrupt the structures of oxygen-evolving complexes at the donor sides of photosystem II (PSII) reaction center and influence energy distribution at PSII reaction centers, thereby inhibiting electron transmission activities at both donor and receptor sides of the PSII reaction center.
