Solvent-induced fabrication of Cu/MnOx nanosheets with abundant oxygen vacancies for efficient and long-lasting photothermal catalytic degradation of humid toluene vapor

Shanliang Jiang,Changhao Li,Yaseen Muhammad,Ying Tang,Ruimeng Wang,Junjie Li,Jing Li,Zhongxing Zhao,Zhenxia Zhao

Construction of highly-active photothermal catalysts featuring merits of high quantum efficiency and superior heat resistance is a great challenge during volatile organic compounds (VOCs) degradation under high humidity. Herein, a facile solvent-induced dimensionality reduction strategy was proposed to engineer a nanosheeted and polycrystalline Cu/Mn-based catalyst (M-Cu/MnO x ) having interfacial oxygen vacancies for enhanced photo-thermal catalytic degradation of toluene under highly humid conditions. Unique Cu-mediated δ-MnO 2 /Mn 3 O 4 nanosheets with high surface area exhibited excellent light absorptivity and photogenerated carrier separation efficiency, as well as superior light-driven thermogenesis. It realized ultra-high (92.8%) toluene conversion and deep mineralization (84.4%) under RH = 80% and continuous catalytic reaction (200 h). Its toluene degradation rate exhibited 3.5–71.9 times higher than reported state-of-the-art photothermal catalysts. The newly designed M-Cu/MnO x catalyst provides a promising, low-cost and alternative for the efficient degradation of toluene and other similar VOCs under humid conditions on large-scale operations.

Atomically dispersed Mn sites on TiO2(B) microspheres enables efficient photocatalytic abatement of NOx

He Ma,Dashuai Li,Yingying Li,Yuanyuan Li,Changhua Wang,Xintong Zhang

While photocatalytic technology has been recognized as an effective means for removing low-concentration NOx in ambient atmosphere, it still faces the challenge of the deep oxidation in high efficiency. In many cases, the release of more toxic NO 2 byproduct appeared to be inevitable during the photocatalytic oxidation of NO. Herein we report that the atomically dispersed MnO x cocatalyst on TiO 2 (B) microspheres could significantly enhance the deep oxidation of NOx under mild photocatalytic conditions (1 mW/cm 2 UV-A light, 1 L/min flow rate). At an initial NO concentration of 0.35 ppm, ca. 67.15% of NO is oxidized on the MT-0.5 sample, which is 2.76 times higher than the pristine TiO 2 (B) sample. More importantly, the release of NO 2 is suppressed by 2.11 times. Comprehensive spectral analyses suggest that atomically dispersed MnO x effectively promotes the charge separation of photogenerated carriers in TiO 2 (B), even better than MnO x nanoparticles-loaded TiO 2 (B). EPR and in-situ FTIR analyses illustrate that atomically dispersed MnO x -loaded TiO 2 (B) sample exhibits excellent low concentration NOx abatement performance, thus providing a rational mechanism for the NO deep oxidation pathway. This study not only provides a unique approach for preparing non-noble metal atomically dispersed co-catalysts, but also affords an effective means for efficient photocatalytic NO degradation.

Fluidization PAC- MnOx combined ceramic membrane reactor for manganese removal: In-situ growth pathway of MnOx and supersession of water flux

Mengyao Xiao,Dachao Lin,Yang Zou,Jiaqi Chen,Zhihong Wang,Jinxu Nie,Yunlong Luo,Xinglin Lu,Xing Du

Groundwater containing dissolved manganese (II) poses a significant challenge to the drinking water treatment process. Ceramic membrane technology enhances manganese removal, but its low permeate flux constrains its practical implementation. To improve efficiency, an integral aeration-MnOx fluidized bed system coupled with ceramic membrane filtration (A-MFB-CF) was developed and operated continuously for 176 days. It demonstrated efficient manganese removal, reducing Mn 2+ concentrations from 0.5–1.5 mg/L to <0.02 mg/L while maintaining a high water flux (60–120 LMH). Mn-oxidizing bacteria (MnOBs), including Ralstonia, Hyphomicrobium, and Pseudomonas , in PAC-MnOx particles, were identified using microbial community analysis. An increased abundance of MnOBs led to stronger resistance to Mn(II) shock loading. Continuous operation of A-MFB-CF filtration accelerated the conversion of MnOx, as evidenced by surface morphology evolution showing dynamic restructuring and bio-chemical synergy. The MnOx transformation pathway transitioned from dissolved Mn(II) species, to small 3D particles [Mn(III)/Mn(IV)] and large-sized 3D aggregates, eventually evolving into 2D layered sheets. The presence of birnessite with low crystallinity was confirmed using Raman and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and this structure contributes to its superb catalytic oxidation efficiency and high Mn(II) adsorption capacity. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis further demonstrated the formation of catalytically active birnessite, characterized by mixed valence states of Mn (III) and Mn (IV). Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) indicated that MnOx formation was initially dominated by biologically mediated conversion, followed by a shift to physicochemical processes during prolonged operation. Additionally, PAC-MnOx fluidization in ceramic membrane tank effectively mitigated cake layer deposition and thus reduce membrane fouling. Our findings demonstrate an effective and space-efficient water treatment strategy, particularly suitable for decentralized water supply scenarios with stringent footprint constraints.

MnOx valence cycle-mediated non-radical electron transfer: Dual regulatory role of MnOx in the chlorination degradation of NOR in drinking water distribution systems

Zeting Chen,Chenlei Xie,Guilin He,Yonglei Wang,Haoran Ji,Tuqiao Zhang,Baozhen Liu,Zhenqi Du,Feilong Dong

Drinking water distribution systems(DWDS) are the ultimate line of defense for ensuring water quality safety. However, particulate matter in DWDS has received limited research attention, and the mechanism by which manganese oxides (MnOx) affect the chlorination degradation of emerging contaminants remains poorly understood. This study uncovers that MnOx mediates non-radical electron transfer through its valence cycle, thereby realizing its dual regulatory role in the chlorination of norfloxacin (NOR). The MnOx-mediated chlorination of NOR follows the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model: MnOx adsorbs NOR via surface Lewis acid sites and binds to sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) through oxygen vacancies, where the Mn(II)/Mn(III)/Mn(IV) valence cycle accelerates electron transfer between NOR and NaClO. Notably, the effect of MnOx varies with free chlorine levels. At sufficient free chlorine concentrations (≥0.1 mg/L), it promotes NOR degradation and induces quinolone ring-opening reactions that are exclusively detected in the MnOx/NaClO system, enhancing the thoroughness of NOR degradation, reducing the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs), and mitigating water toxicity. At insufficient concentrations (<0.1 mg/L), the presence of MnOx inhibits NOR degradation and increases water toxicity. This study clarifies the dual active regulatory role of MnOx in the chlorination degradation of NOR, and this dual regulatory role is primarily dependent on free chlorine concentration (≥0.1 mg/L vs. <0.1 mg/L), which correlates with the distance from water treatment plants. From water chemistry perspective, this work provides novel insights into the transport and transformation of micropollutants in DWDS and offers a valuable theoretical basis for the targeted control of emerging contaminants in DWDS.

MnOx Embedded in Silicon Nanowire Arrays for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Liu Pengwei,Wei Manlin,Shen Xiaojuan

Due to the good integration with the current silicon-based electronic devices, silicon-based supercapacitor have been considered as one of the promising energy storage devices. However, their practical application is largely hindered by complex and costly manufacturing processes. In this study, a novel NiSi@MnO x electrode was fabricated with a simple and cost-effective method, where Ni nanoparticles and MnO x nanoparticles were sequentially electrodeposited on the silicon nanowire arrays (SiNWs). Ni particles served as the protective layer on the silicon surface as well as the current collector of the composite, and MnO x functioned as the electrochemical material of the electrode. As the deposition time of MnO x increased, the structure of NiSi@MnO x changed from core–shell to embedded. The electrochemical results demonstrated that when MnO x was embedded in Silicon nanowires, the NiSi@MnO x electrode achieved an excellent area capacitance of 328.6 mF/cm 2 at 1 mA/cm 2 , which also displayed an impressive capacitance retention of 79.05% after 7000 cycles. Additionally, an all-solid-state asymmetric SC (ASC) of NiSi@MnO x //Fe 2 O 3 /N-rGO was fabricated by using NiSi@MnO x as positive electrode, Fe 2 O 3 /N-rGO loaded on NF as negative electrode. The ASC exhibited a remarkable energy density of 0.021 mWh/cm 2 at the power density of 0.7998 mW/cm 2 , surpassing the majority of reported values for silicon-based/MnO x -based supercapacitors. This study provides a simple, time-effective, and low-cost method to prepare high-performance 3D silicon-based electrodes. Graphical Abstract

Influence of MnOx deposition on TiO2 nanotube arrays for electrooxidation

Kaihang Zhang,Yuanzheng Zhang,Su Liu,Xin Tong,Junfeng Niu,Dong Wang,Junchen Yan,Zhaoyang Xiong,John Crittenden

TiO 2 has demonstrated outstanding performance in electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) due to its structural stability and high oxygen overpotential. However, there is still much room for improving its electrochemical activity. Herein, narrow bandgap manganese oxide (MnO x ) was composited with TiO 2 nanotube arrays (TiO 2 NTAs) that in-situ oxidized on porous Ti sponge, forming the MnO x -TiO 2 NTAs anode. XANES and XPS analysis further proved that the composition of MnO x is Mn 2 O 3 . Electrochemical characterizations revealed that increasing the composited concentration of MnO x can improve the conductivity and reduce oxygen evolution potential so as to improve the electrochemical activity of the composited MnO x -TiO 2 NTAs anode. Meanwhile, the optimal degradation rate of benzoic acid (BA) was achieved using MnO x -TiO 2 NTAs with a MnO x concentration of 0.1 mmol L −1 , and the role of MnO x was proposed based on DFT calculation. Additionally, the required electrical energy (EE/O) to destroy BA was optimized by varying the composited concentration of MnO x and the degradation voltage. These quantitative results are of great significance for the design and application of high-performance materials for EAOPs.

NOx Reconstruction Triggered by Zeolite Reverses Alkali Metal Poisoning in NO Selective Catalytic Reduction

Zhiqiang Zhang,Baiyun Zhu,Lu Xu,Yan Wang,Jiawei Ji,Wang Song,Meilin Tao,Changjin Tang,Lin Dong

Alkali metal poisoning represents a formidable challenge for the effective utilization of ammonia selective catalytic reduction (NH3–SCR) technology. Herein, we propose a versatile strategy to radically circumvent the deactivation effect from alkali metals via regulated activation of surface NOx species. Activity test showed that after physical mixing with a series of zeolites (ZSM-5, MOR, and SAPO-34), the activity of the K-poisoned CeO2–MnOx catalyst achieved complete recovery, and the observed NO conversion was found to be even superior to that of the fresh catalyst. Mechanism analysis from in situ DRIFTS and TPSR revealed that K deposition shut off the transformation of surface NOx from chelating bidentate nitrites to bidentate nitrates (both bridging and chelating bidentate nitrates), leading to catalyst deactivation. Zeolite coupling introduced labile NO+ species, which interacted facilely with the chelating bidentate nitrites to generate chemically reactive bidentate nitrates, enabling a thorough regeneration of NH3–SCR performance. In addition to CeO2–MnOx, this strategy was also found to be valid for a variety of NH3–SCR catalysts, demonstrating great potential in reversing alkali metal poisoning.

Oxygen vacancies modulation in graphene/MnOx composite for high performance supercapacitors

Jiasheng Yue,Gang Lu,Pian Zhang,Yunhao Wu,Zhiming Cheng,Xiaohong Kang

An efficient and scalable method to improve the capacitive properties of MnO 2 is reported by inducing graphene (rGO) and oxygen vacancies via a thermal treatment in air, in which graphene oxide (GO) is in situ reduced and graphene/MnO x (rGO/MnO x ) composite without oxygen vacancies-induced phase transformation is formed. RGO/MnO x composite exhibits a large specific capacitance (274 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 ), excellent cycling stability (98.8% after 5000 cycles at 1 A g −1 ) and rate performance (171 F g −1 at 10 A g −1 ). The performance improvement of rGO/MnO x sample is mainly attributed to the moderate concentration of oxygen vacancies, rGO and special 3D porous architecture, which facilitate the rapid ionic and electronic transport and promote a facile redox reaction and surface double-layer capacitance. The asymmetric supercapacitor composed of rGO/MnO x //Kochen Black (KB) also shows an outstanding cyclic stability (89% after 5000 cycles) in all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor. The design and synthesis method of rGO/MnO x sample offers a promising approach to broaden MnO 2 -based electrode materials for a new-generation energy storage device.

CeO2–MnOx/ZSM-5 sorbents for H2S removal at high temperature

Dongjing Liu,Weiguo Zhou,Jiang Wu

x Ce y Mn/ZSM-5 sorbents were prepared using sol–gel method and employed for H 2 S removal in the temperature range of 600–800   °C. The sorbents exhibited high performance in sulfur removal due to the cooperative effect of CeO 2 and MnO x . The presence of H 2 was unfavorable for sulfidation and obviously shortened the breakthrough time and reduced the sulfur capacity. However, the existence of CO had little impact on the sulfur-removal performance. The characterization results revealed that the ZSM-5 structure remained intact during preparation and sulfidation process. And active species, such as CeO 2 and Mn 2 O 3 , were well dispersed on ZSM-5, which would suppress the mechanical disintegration and improve the thermal stability of x Ce y Mn/ZSM-5.

NH3 inhibits mercury oxidation over low-temperature MnOx/TiO2 SCR catalyst

Hailong Li,Jiexia Zhao,Weilin Zhang,Jianping Yang,Jun Wang,Mingguang Zhang,Zequn Yang,Liqing Li,Kaimin Shih

Manganese oxide/titanium dioxide (MnO x /TiO 2 , or MnTi) catalyst prepared by an ultrasound-assisted impregnation method was employed for simultaneous nitrogen oxide (NO) reduction and elemental mercury (Hg 0 ) oxidation under a simulated selective catalytic reduction (SCR) atmosphere. An NO reduction rate of 83% and Hg 0 oxidation rate of 96% were simultaneously achieved at a relatively low temperature of 200 °C. Ammonia (NH 3 ) as a reducing agent in the NO-SCR process was systematically investigated for its effect on Hg 0 oxidation. The results showed that NH 3 inhibited Hg 0 oxidation over the low-temperature MnTi catalysis process. In the presence of NH 3 , competitive adsorption between NH 3 and Hg 0 on the MnTi catalyst was partly responsible for the weakening Hg 0 oxidation. NH 3 consumed surface oxygen (O 2 ) on the MnTi catalyst, which also resulted in lower Hg 0 oxidation rate, especially in the absence of gas phase O 2 in the flue gas . More importantly, oxidized mercury was reduced by NH 3 to form Hg 0 with the aid of NO, i.e., the combined presence of NO and NH 3 induced the reduction of oxidized mercury, and hence partially offset Hg 0 oxidation. The effects of individual SCR gases, such as O 2 , NO, and the combinations, on Hg 0 oxidation were also elaborated.

Solution-processable hierarchical SiNW/PEDOT/MnOx electrodes for high-performance supercapacitors

Xiaojuan Shen,Xinyue Wei,Tongfei Wang,Sumin Li,Haitao Li

Si-Based supercapacitors (SCs) have drawn considerable attention due to their inherent integration with the current Si-based microelectronics. However, the complicated and expensive manufacturing processes severely limit their practical applications. Composites of metal oxides and conductive polymers are regarded as promising active materials in SCs due to their high specific capacitance, good conductivity, and easy fabrication. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, there are very few reports on their applications in Si-based SCs. Herein, a composite of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and manganese oxide (MnOx) modified silicon nanowire arrays (SiNWs) was elaborately designed and well prepared using a facile, simple, and low-cost method, where PEDOT was electropolymerized on SiNWs followed by dipping in KMnO4 solution. Platinum (Pt) particles were introduced between PEDOT and MnOx, which not only enhanced the mass-loading of MnOx but also improved the conductivity of the composite. After spin-coating poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) layer doped with silver nanowires (PsAg) on the composite, a hierarchical core–shell electrode comprising active materials and current collector was formed. Benefiting from the large surface area of porous SiNWs/PEDOT, high mass-loading of MnOx, and shorter electron/ion transfer paths, an excellent areal capacitance of 352.08 mF cm−2 at 2 mA cm−2 was achieved by the synthesized SiNW/PEDOT@Pt/MnOx electrode, which is superior to almost all the previously reported areal capacitance values of Si-based electrodes. Additionally, a symmetric device was prepared to investigate its practical applicability, which displayed a maximum energy density of 0.049 mW h cm−2 and considerable retention of 85.25% over 2000 cycles. These preliminary results demonstrate that the hierarchical composites of metal oxides and conductive polymers decorated three-dimensional (3D) silicon are promising electrode materials for future low-cost and high-performance SCs.

Photothermocatalytic System Designed by Facet-heterojunction to Enhance the Synergistic Effect of Toluene Oxidation

Yusheng Luo,Zhili Chi,Jinlong Zhang,Baozhu Tian

Graphical Facets : We first exploited a facet-heterojunction-based photothermocatalytic material CdS−Au-{001}BiOCl{110}-MnO x by respectively depositing CdS−Au on the {001} facets and MnO x on {110} facets of BiOCl nanosheets. This material exhibited excellent activity for toluene oxidation and ∼100 % selectivity from toluene to CO 2 under full-spectrum sunlight irradiation. There is a synergistic effect between photocatalysis and thermocatalysis. It is very essential to improve the activity and selectivity of photothermocatalysis (PTC) by tailoring the microstructures of photothermocatalytic materials. Herein, we exploit a facet-heterojunction strategy to fabricate photothermocatalysts, by which CdS−Au-{001}BiOCl{110}-MnO x is constructed by respectively depositing CdS−Au on the {001} facets and MnO x on {110} facets of BiOCl nanosheets. This material exhibits excellent activity for toluene oxidation and near 100 % selectivity from toluene to carbon dioxide under full-spectrum sunlight irradiation. The conversion rate of toluene under PTC condition is significantly enhanced by 47.5, 1.8 and 1.7 times compared with that of sole PC, TC and the sum of TC and PC. There is a synergistic effect between photocatalysis and thermocatalysis, in which the S-scheme photocatalyst CdS−Au-{001}BiOCl produces high-energy active species to activate toluene and accelerate the cycle conversion of lattice oxygen and oxygen vacancy in MnO x .
