Design and synthesis of Mo2C/MoO3 with enhanced visible-light photocatalytic performance for reduction of Cr (VI) and degradation of organic pollutants

Xinbo Jing,Xueying Peng,Xiyin Sun,Wu Zhou,Wei Wang,Shufen Wang

In this study, a facile impregnation-calcination strategy was applied in order to synthesize Mo2C modified MoO3 (Mo2C/MoO3), which was then employed as catalyst for the photoreduction of Cr (VI) and photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) upon irradiation by visible light (λ > 400 nm). The apparent rate constant (k) of Mo2C/MoO3 for the MO photocatalyzed degradation reaction under visible-light irradiation was found to be 0.0171 min-1, which was 4.59 and 67.38 times higher than that of Pt/MoO3 and pristine MoO3, respectively. Study of the photocatalytic mechanism revealed that the •O2- species played a major role in MO degradation. Moreover, the addition of Mo2C enhanced the light response region of MoO3, and also promoted the photocatalytic activity of MoO3. This was due to the enhanced separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and broader photoresponse region. This work suggests a new use for the easily accessible Mo2C/MoO3 heterostructure and could facilitate the application of photocatalysts for wastewater treatment.

Coupled Sn/Mo2C nanoparticles wrapped in carbon nanofibers by electrospinning as high-performance electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

Lun Zhang,Kuo Wei,Jinming Ma,Jing Wang,Zhiwei Liu,Ruirui Xing,Tifeng Jiao

Constructing bimetallic carbon-based electrocatalysts of rational geometric structures has been an efficient method to improve the kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The reasonably designed bimetallic carbon-based electrocatalysts have low-cost and high electrocatalytic efficiency, which are promising to replace the platinum catalysts. Herein, the Sn/Mo 2 C composite nanoparticles were encapsulated in carbon nanofibers of a 2D structure (Sn/Mo 2 C-CNFs) have been successfully fabricated by a simple electrospinning and carbonization process. As a result, after turned the ratio of Sn and Mo 2 C into 1:3, the Sn/Mo 2 C-CNFs showed a superior HER performance with an overpotential of 144 mV in the current density of 10 mA⋅cm −2 in alkaline medium, the Tafel slope of 49.8 mV⋅dec -1 , and operated stably for 60 h and 5000 circles. These excellent properties were mainly attributed to the special nanofiber structure and the synergism of Sn and Mo 2 C that enhanced the active sites and weakened the binding force of H proton and Mo 2 C. The present work provides an uncomplicated, efficient, and low-cost train of thought for resolving the problem of replacing the Pt-based catalysts with bimetallic materials.

Hierarchical Nitrogen-doped Mo2C Nanoparticle-in-microflower Electrocatalyst: in Situ Synthesis and Efficient Hydrogen-evolving Performance in Alkaline and Acidic Media

Yongli Sun,Feifei Peng,Luhong Zhang,Bin Jiang,Haozhen Dou,Na Zhang,Mi Xu,Na Yang

Graphical Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution : The morphology and diameter of porous Mo 2 C can be tuned in an easy and precise way. 0D/3D Mo 2 C P/Mo 2 C F exposes abundant active sites and possesses super water affinity to accelerate electrolyte and gas diffusion, and it works better than commercial Pt/C at high current densities in 1.0 M KOH. Herein, a novel 6∼9 nm nitrogen-doped Mo 2 C nanoparticles (Mo 2 C P) homogeneously decorated on 3D porous nitrogen-doped Mo 2 C microflowers (Mo 2 C F) were prepared in situ to form 0D/3D Mo 2 C P/Mo 2 C F. This special structure combines the advantages of Mo 2 C P and porous Mo 2 C F to provide a high density of reaction sites and facilitate the diffusion of electrolyte and hydrogen. Mo 2 C P/Mo 2 C F exhibits excellent HER performance in both alkaline and acidic solutions. It only requires an overpotential of 96 and 118 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 ( η 10 ) in 1.0 M KOH and 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , respectively. Moreover, it works better than commercial Pt/C at high current densities in 1.0 M KOH. The Tafel slopes are less than 50 mV/dec in both media, suggesting an obviously fast HER kinetics. Additionally, this study presents a universally applicable method to prepare M x C P/Mo 2 C F (M=Fe, Co, V) for different applications.

Ni Strongly Coupled with Mo2C Encapsulated in Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanofibers as Robust Bifunctional Catalyst for Overall Water Splitting

Meixuan Li,Yun Zhu,Huiyuan Wang,Ce Wang,Nicola Pinna,Xiaofeng Lu

It is urgently required to develop highly efficient and stable bifunctional non-noble metal electrocatalysts for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for water splitting. In this study, a facile electrospinning followed by a post-carbonization treatment to synthesize nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (NCNFs) integrated with Ni and Mo 2 C nanoparticles (Ni/Mo 2 C-NCNFs) as water splitting electrocatalysts is developed. Owing to the strong hydrogen binding energy on Mo 2 C and high electrical conductivity of Ni, synergetic effect between Ni and Mo 2 C nanoparticles significantly promote both HER and OER activities. The optimized hybrid (Ni/Mo 2 C(1:2)-NCNFs) delivers low overpotentials of 143 mV for HER and 288 mV for OER at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . An alkaline electrolyzer with Ni/Mo 2 C(1:2)-NCNFs as catalysts for both anode and cathode exhibits a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a voltage of 1.64 V, which is only 0.07 V larger than the benchmark of Pt/C-RuO 2 electrodes. In addition, an outstanding long-term durability during 100 h testing without obvious degradation is achieved, which is superior to most of the noble-metal-free electrocatalysts reported to date. This work provides a simple and effective approach for the preparation of low-cost and high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts for efficient overall water splitting.

3D Foam-Like Composites of Mo2C Nanorods Coated by N-Doped Carbon: A Novel Self-Standing and Binder-Free O2 Electrode for Li–O2 Batteries

Guiru Sun,Qin Zhao,Tong Wu,Wei Lu,Mei Bao,Liqun Sun,Haiming Xie,Jia Liu

The development of self-standing and binder-free O2 electrodes is significant for enhancing the total specific energy density and suppressing parasitic reactions for Li–O2 batteries, which is still a formidable challenge thus far. Here, a three-dimensional foam-like composite composed of Mo2C nanorods decorated by different amounts of N-doped carbon (Mo2C-NR@xNC (x = 5, 11, and 16 wt %)) was directly employed as the O2 electrode without applications of any binders and current collectors. Mo2C-NR@xNC presents a network microstructure with interconnected macropore and mesoporous channels, which is beneficial to achieving fast Li+ migration and O2 diffusion, facilitating the electrolyte impregnation, and providing enough space for Li2O2 storage. Additionally, the coated N-doped carbon layer can largely improve the electrochemical stability and conductivity of Mo2C. The cell with Mo2C-NR@11NC shows a considerable cyclability of 200 cycles with an overpotential of 0.28 V in the first cycle at a constant current density of 100 mA g–1, a superior reversibility associated with the formation and decomposition of Li2O2 as desired, and a high electrochemical stability. On the basis of the experimental results, the electrochemical mechanism for the cell using Mo2C-NR@11NC is proposed. These results represent a promising process in the development of a self-standing and binder-free foam-based electrode for Li–O2 batteries.

Metallic Ni Promoted Mo2C-MoN Particles Supported on N-Doped Graphitic Carbon as Bifunctional Catalyst for Oxygen and Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Media

Yunfeng Zhan,Fangyan Xie,Hao Zhang,Zhipeng Lin,Jilin Huang,Weihong Zhang,Xueliang Sun,Hui Meng,Yueli Zhang,Jian Chen

A highly active and stable bifunctional electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolutionreaction (HER) in alkaline media based on Ni-doped Mo2C-MoN particles supported on porous N-doped graphitic carbon is studied in this work. The optimized Mo2C-MoN/Ni@NC catalyst shows small over potential of 296 mV and 183 mV at 10 mA cm−2 on glassy carbon electrode for OER and HER, respectively. The best catalyst is the mixture of hexagonal Mo2C, MoN and metallic Ni. The high catalytic performance is explained by the synergistic effect between metallic Ni and Mo compounds. The promotion effect of Ni to Mo2C-MoN leads to high OER activity and Mo2C is crucial for HER. The good stability and easily scale-up make the Mo2C-MoN/Ni@NC a promising bifunctional catalyst for water splitting in alkaline media.

Expediting H2 Evolution over MAPbI3 with a Nonnoble Metal Cocatalyst Mo2C under Visible Light

Jinxing Yu,Xiaoxiang Xu

Halide perovskites have been emerging as promising photocatalytic materials for H 2 evolution from water due to their outstanding photoelectric properties. However, the lack of proper surface reactive sites greatly hinders the photocatalytic potential of these fascinating compounds. Here, Mo 2 C nanoparticles have been anchored onto methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) as a nonnoble metal cocatalyst to promote H 2 evolution reactions. The Mo 2 C nanoparticles have opposite zeta potential with MAPbI 3 thereby electrostatically assembled onto the MAPbI 3 surface, i.e., Mo 2 C@MAPbI 3 . Our results show that the anchored Mo 2 C nanoparticles have a strong interplay with MAPbI 3 substrate so that photogenerated electrons of MAPbI 3 can be rapidly separated and transferred into Mo 2 C for further H 2 evolution reactions. Under optimal conditions, Mo 2 C@MAPbI 3 delivers exceptionally high photocatalytic performance for visible light-driven H 2 evolution that clearly outperforms pristine MAPbI 3 and Pt-deposited MAPbI 3 . An apparent quantum efficiency as high as 12.65% at 600 ± 40   nm has been attained for H 2 evolution, surpassing most of the MAPbI 3 -based photocatalyst reported. These results signify the usefulness and applicability of Mo 2 C as a new nonnoble metal-based cocatalyst in solar water splitting.

Mo/Mo2C encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers as efficiently integrated heterojunction electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction in wide pH range

Meixuan Li,Huiyuan Wang,Yun Zhu,Di Tian,Ce Wang,Xiaofeng Lu

It is extremely necessary to develop high-performance noble-metal-free hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts applied over the whole pH values to replace expensive Pt-based catalysts. Herein, a typical metal-semiconductor heterostructure with metallic Mo and Mo 2 C nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (N-CNFs) is fabricated via the pyrolysis of electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/cellulose acetate (CA)/bis(acetylacetonato)dioxomolybdenum (MoO 2 (acac) 2 ) nanofibers . The unique porous and channel-rich structure of Mo/Mo 2 C/N-CNFs can be manipulated by varying the mass ratio of polyacrylonitrile and cellulose acetate , leading to the exposure of abundant active centers and the acceleration of rapid mass transport. In addition, the synergetic effect among metal and semiconductor as well as the excellent conductivity of the N-CNFs result in excellent HER activity and stability over a wide pH range. To achieve the current density of 10 mA cm − 2 , the optimized Mo/Mo 2 C/N-CNFs exhibit overpotentials of 175, 162 and 294 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , 1 M KOH and 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution (PBS), respectively. This work provides a feasible approach to synthesize high-performance and economical hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts at all pH values for renewable energy-related applications.

Wenhao Fan,Jianxun Zhao,Dayong Liu,Qingcheng Liang,Wanqiang Liu,Xin Guo,Qingshuang Wang,Heng Liu,Peng Chen,Shang Gao,Yong Cheng,Xinwei Wang

The current hydrogen storage alloys used for Ni-MH battery negative electrode are difficult to guarantee excellent performance in terms of discharge capacity and cycle stability. Co 0.9 Cu 0.1 Si alloy has been widely investigated as a negative electrode material for nickel hydrogen battery, but its capacity and cycle stability need to be improved for commercial applications. In this work, Co 0.9 Cu 0.1 Si alloy was prepared by mechanical alloying. Molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) was loaded on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by in-situ carburizing . In order to improve the electrochemical hydrogen storage performance of Co 0.9 Cu 0.1 Si alloy, 5 wt% MWCNTs, Mo 2 C and molybdenum carbide modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Mo 2 C@MWCNTs) were added to Co 0.9 Cu 0.1 Si alloy via mechanical alloying method. The structure and morphology of the composites were characterized by XRD and SEM. The discharge capacity, cyclic stability and high rate discharge performance of the composites were tested, the electrochemical performance of the composites was investigated by three-electrode battery system. The composite materials have better discharge capacity, cycle stability and electrochemical performance compared with the pristine alloy. The Co 0.9 Cu 0.1 Si alloy doped with 5 wt% Mo 2 C@MWCNTs-2 has the best electrochemical hydrogen storage performance among all the composite materials. Its optimal discharge capacity is 609.9 mAh/g and its maximum capacity retention rate is 64.7 %. The enhancement of the electrochemical hydrogen storage performances of the composites are due to the high conductivity and high specific surface area of MWCNTs and the high catalytic activity of Mo 2 C. The synergistic effect of MWCNTs and Mo 2 C can improve the electrochemical hydrogen storage performances of the composites.

Defect-Rich FeN0.023/Mo2C Heterostructure as a Highly Efficient Bifunctional Catalyst for Overall Water-Splitting

NanNan Han,ShiWen Luo,ChengWei Deng,Sheng Zhu,QunJie Xu,YuLin Min

The innovation in highly efficient, stable, and economical bifunctional overall water-splitting electrocatalysts is critical in developing sustainable energy, but it remains challenging. In this research, we have developed an unsophisticated method to synthesize hybrid nanoparticles (FeN0.023/Mo2C/C) uniformly dispersed in nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets. The two active components FeN0.023 and Mo2C are coupled to form an FeN0.023/Mo2C/C heterostructure being a highly efficient electrocatalyst, which gives low overpotentials of 227/76 mV for OER/HER at 10 mA cm–2 current density. The alkaline-electrolyzer with FeN0.023/Mo2C/C as the anode–cathode catalyst needs merely 1.55 V to reach 10 mA cm–2 and can maintain a stable state for a minimum of 10 h. This research gives a simple effective resolution in designing affordable and useful overall water-splitting electrocatalysts.

Effect of Mo2C-functionalized electrode interface on enhancing microbial cathode electrocatalysis: Beyond electrochemical hydrogen evolution

Qi Zhu,Jiaxin Peng,Yunhong Huang,Haiyan Ni,Zhong-er Long,Long Zou

Mo 2 C has recently been introduced into microbial cathode electrocatalysis due to its well-known catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but a low electrode potential (i.e., a high energy input) is required usually. However, in the range of potential where HER cannot occur, its effect on microorganism/cathode interfacial kinetics remains unknown. Herein, an active Mo 2 C interface is constructed on conventional carbon cloth electrode to investigate its impact on electric-driven fumarate reduction by a typical electroactive microorganism ( Shewanella oneidensis MR-1) at a potential of −0.36 V (vs . standard hydrogen electrode) that cannot meet the HER requirement. The Mo 2 C-functionalized electrode achieves a greatly increased current consumption density of ∼0.041 mA cm −2 , about three times that of the control, indicating a faster fumarate reduction rate. This substantially proves that the enhancement of microbial electrocatalytic kinetics at Mo 2 C-functionalized interface is not confined to the induced hydrogen evolution. By analyzing its interaction with extracellular electron transfer mediators (e.g., c -type cytochromes and riboflavin), a robust inward extracellular electron transfer process based on the rapid electrochemical reaction of riboflavin at the Mo 2 C-functionalized interface is elaborated. This work provides a new understanding of the mechanism by which the nanostructured Mo 2 C interface enhances microbial cathode electrocatalysis.

Controlled Fabrication of Mo2C/C Nanospheres via Electrospinning Technique as Electrocatalysts for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Wu Zexin,Zhang Haoyu,Zhao Junyu,Hao Hongshun,Yan Shuang

A strategy was proposed for the synthesis of Mo 2 C/C composite as an efficient electrocatalyst through electrospinning and calcination. PVP and PAN were utilized as electrospinning precursors for comparative analysis. Morphological characterization revealed that an electrospinning solution with the viscosity in the range of 2–5 mPa·S was conducive to the formation of spherical morphology. Under calcination at nitrogen atmosphere, as-electrospun Mo@PVP-1 and Mo@PAN-1 samples transformed into Mo 2 C/C with bead-like structure at 900 and 800 °C, respectively. Compared to PVP, PAN exhibited greater resistance to deformation at elevated temperature, resulting in better-dispersed spherical Mo 2 C/C composite. The synthesized Mo 2 C/C exhibited good electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction. The Tafel slopes of Mo 2 C/C prepared from Mo@PVP-1-900 and Mo@PAN-1-800 were 75.85 and 164.7 mV·dec −1 , respectively. This work contributes to the understanding of synthetic process of spherical Mo 2 C/C composites through electrospinning, providing an effective way to improve material performance. Graphical Mo 2 C/C composites were synthesized by calcination with different polymer solutions (PAN and PVP) by electrostatic spraying, and their performance as catalysts was tested.
