AOA and comammox were more drought-tolerant than AOB in red soil. • Low N favored AOA and comammox recovery, whereas high N promoted AOB recovery. • High nitrogen input increased cumulative post-drought N 2 O emissions. • Nitrifier resilience governs post-drought N 2 O emissions. The resilience of ammonia-oxidizing guilds can regulate nitrification after drought, yet how nitrogen input modifies guild-specific recovery and post-drought nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions remains unclear. We conducted a 90-day cultivation experiment with subtropical acidic red soil, including 30 days of drought stress followed by 60 days of rewetting recovery. Treatments included a constant-moisture control (CK), post-drought recovery without nitrogen addition (N0), low nitrogen addition (NL, 20 mg N kg −1 ), and high nitrogen addition (NH, 100 mg N kg −1 ). This study aimed to determine how nitrogen input regulates guild-specific nitrifier resilience and post-drought N 2 O emissions by monitoring N 2 O fluxes, soil physicochemical properties, and the abundance and diversity of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), and complete ammonia oxidizers (comammox). Nitrogen input markedly increased post-drought N 2 O emissions, with 28-day cumulative emissions following the order NH (20.08 μg N 2 O-N g −1 ) > NL (14.71 μg N 2 O-N g −1 ) > N0 (10.72 μg N 2 O-N g −1 ) > CK (1.43 μg N 2 O-N g −1 ). AOA and comammox showed greater drought tolerance than AOB, whereas AOB recovered more strongly under high nitrogen input. Resilience indices further showed that low nitrogen addition favored the recovery of AOA and comammox, while high nitrogen addition promoted AOB recovery. Mantel analysis identified electrical conductivity (EC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) as important soil drivers of ammonia-oxidizer community shifts. Random forest analysis showed that comammox α-diversity resilience, AOB α-diversity resilience, and AOB abundance resilience were the strongest microbial predictors of post-drought N 2 O emissions. These findings demonstrate that nitrogen input regulates post-drought N 2 O emissions by reshaping soil recovery and guild-specific nitrifier resilience, rather than by increasing mineral nitrogen availability alone. This study highlights nitrifier resilience as a key microbial mechanism for predicting and managing N 2 O pulses under increasingly frequent drought-rewetting events. Recent advancements have positioned nonaqueous amine-based absorbents as promising candidates for energy-efficient CO2 capture. However, detailed physicochemical data are still essential to support accurate modeling for scaling up the process. Diffusivity (D) and physical solubility (H) of N2O and CO2 in organic solvents were determined by using a stirred cell. Gas solubility ratios (HCO2/HN2O) in these solvents exhibit an inverse correlation with the solvents’ Hoy solubility parameters. Changes in the DCO2/DN2O ratio and D^(1/2)/H in various solvents are governed by interactions between gas properties and solvent polarity. Specifically in the 2-hexyloxyethanol (2-HE)/2-(ethylamino)ethanol system, DN2O was found to be inversely proportional to solvent viscosity with a power of 0.6. The ratios of the derived combined parameter D^(1/2)/H for CO2 and N2O increase with solvent polarity. This correlation framework allows reliable prediction of transport properties in the 2-HE based nonaqueous system, supporting kinetic study and scalable carbon capture design.

Bio-denitrification (i.e., microbial reduction of nitrate to gaseous nitrogen) is usually reported to be affected by operating and environmental parameters, such as carbon source type, pH value, and temperature. In this paper, the enhancement of denitrification performance with the elimination of nitrite accumulation and nitrous oxide emission by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 were investigated and the mechanisms were explored. It was found that S. oneidensis MR-1 itself had marginal nitrate removal capacity, but its presence in the denitrification system of a well-studied denitrifier (Paracoccus denitrificans ) obviously enhanced nitrate removal efficiency (from 65.3% to 97.8%) and reduced nitrite accumulation (0.67 against none-detectable) and N 2 O generation (from 8.87 μm/mM-TN to none-detectable). The mechanism study showed that S. oneidensis MR-1 promoted electrons transfer activity via the formation of nanotube between cells, which resulted in the increase of denitrification enzymes activity , carbon source metabolism, ATP level and cell viability. As the generation, transfer and consumption of electrons were enhanced by S. oneidensis MR-1, the improvement of denitrification performance with reduction of nitrite accumulation and N 2 O emission was therefore achieved. Finally, the performance of denitrification enhanced by S. oneidensis MR-1 was testified by laboratory groundwater treatment experiment. This study suggested the potential role of S. oneidensis MR-1 in accelerating nitrate bio-transformation in nitrogen geochemical cycle and increasing bio-treatment of nitrate contamination with negligible harmful intermediates (nitrite and N 2 O) accumulation.

Salinity is considered a major factor influencing nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions from biochemical treatment of high-salinity wastewater, but its mechanism has not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we investigated the effects of salinity on N 2 O emissions under aerobic conditions. As salinity rose from 0.66 % to 3.66 %, N 2 O emission flux first increased and then decreased, while the emission factor (EF) consistently increased, likely due to significant inhibition of nitrification at 3.66 % salinity. Nitrogen‑oxygen dual isotope labeling experiments demonstrated that the dominant N 2 O production pathway shifted with salinity: from nitrifier nitrification (NN, 36.07 %–40.97 %) at low salinity (0.66 %, 1.66 %), to nitrification-coupled denitrification (NCD, 51.67 %) at 2.66 %, and to nitrifier denitrification (ND, up to 80.81 %) at the salinity of 3.66 %. From the changes in bacterial relative abundances and expressions of 4 key functional genes ( amoA , hao , nor , and nosZ ) revealed by metatranscriptomic sequencing, Nitrosomonas , unclassified Rhodospirillales , and Nitrospira were identified as key contributors to NN, NCD, and ND pathways, respectively, as salinity increased. We also found that the differential expressed genes and metabolites involved in energy metabolism, oxidative phosphorylation, and metabolism of amino acids, pyrimidines, and nucleotides may affect N-cycling bacteria, thereby influencing nitrogen conversion and salinity tolerance as well. This study sheds light on nitrification process in response to salinity stress and offers insights for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from high-salinity wastewater treatment.

Semiartificial photosynthesis shows great potential in solar energy conversion and environmental application. However, the rate-limiting step of photoelectron transfer at the biomaterial interface results in an unsatisfactory quantum yield (QY, typically lower than 3%). Here, an anthraquinone molecule, which has dual roles of microbial photosensitizer and capacitor, was demonstrated to negotiate the interface photoelectron transfer via decoupling the photochemical reaction with a microbial dark reaction. In a model system, anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS)-photosensitized Thiobacillus denitrificans, a maximum QY of solar-to-nitrous oxide (N2O) of 96.2% was achieved, which is the highest among the semiartificial photosynthesis systems. Moreover, the conversion of nitrate into N2O was almost 100%, indicating the excellent selectivity in nitrate reduction. The capacitive property of AQS resulted in 82–89% of photoelectrons released at dark and enhanced 5.6–9.4 times the conversion of solar-to-N2O. Kinetics investigation revealed a zero-order- and first-order- reaction kinetics of N2O production in the dark (reductive AQS-mediated electron transfer) and under light (direct photoelectron transfer), respectively. This work is the first study to demonstrate the role of AQS in photosensitizing a microorganism and provides a simple and highly selective approach to produce N2O from nitrate-polluted wastewater and a strategy for the efficient conversion of solar-to-chemical by a semiartificial photosynthesis system.

The physical solubility and mass transfer performance of CO 2 absorption into aqueous N,N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) solution were comprehensively studied in the present work. The physical solubility (Henry’s law constant ( He )) was measured using a stirred cell reactor for pure DMEA and aqueous DMEA at temperatures from 293.98 to 333.03 K. Then, the physical solubility of CO 2 was obtained based on the “N 2 O analogy” method. Furthermore, He was correlated successfully by using an empirical polynomial model with an average absolute relative deviation (AARD) of 4.23%. The mass transfer performance was studied in a laboratory scale structured packing absorption column at DMEA concentration of 1–4 kmol/m 3 , liquid feed temperature of 293.15–333.15 K, liquid flow rate of 3.90–11.7 m 3 /m 2 -hr, CO 2 partial pressure of 6–20 kPa, lean CO 2 loading of 0.050–0.300 mol/mol, over the inert gas flow rate range of 26.11–43.52 kmol/m 3 -hr. Based on the experimental values of He for CO 2 into aqueous DMEA solution, the effect of the gas concentration of A in gas-liquid equilibrium ( y A ∗ ) on gas phase volumetric overall mass transfer coefficient ( K G a v ) was considered in this study, but found to be an insignificant influence that can be ignored. Analogously, an attempt to correlate the mass transfer coefficient K G a v and outlet concentration of CO 2 ( y out ) using semiempirical models as function of the mentioned operational parameters was conducted. The predictive correlations for K G a v and y out of the DMEA-CO 2 -H 2 O system in structured packing column are K G a v = L 0.23 0.6144 a eq - a C / p C O 2 + 0.02327 and ln y out = l n y in - 0.77 PV G Ω L 0.23 0.6144 a eq - a C / p C O 2 + 0.02327 , with acceptable AARDs of 4.59% and 1.48%, respectively.

Mitigating industrial nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions is critical for climate action, yet developing efficient low-temperature N2O decomposition catalysts under O2-containing conditions remains challenging. The weak oxygen–support interaction leads to unsatisfactory N2O decomposition performance in the supported Co3O4/CeO2 catalyst. This study aims to enhance the electronic oxide–support interaction in the Co3O4/CeO2 catalyst through Zn doping, thereby improving its catalytic performance for N2O decomposition under O2-rich conditions. The results demonstrate that, in the presence of 5% O2, the activation energy of the catalyst sharply decreases from 117.5 to 60.4 kJ·mol–1 after Zn doping (Co2.4Zn0.6O4/CeO2). Additionally, the doped catalyst exhibits strong durability to the O2 + H2O + NOx impurity gas components. Advanced spectral characterization and density functional theory calculations reveal that Zn doping modulates the geometry and electronic structure of active cobalt sites, optimizing the adsorption and activation capabilities of N2O molecules. This study elucidates the mechanism of N2O decomposition over the catalysts and establishes a clear structure–activity relationship between the atomic-scale configuration of active sites and their performance. These findings provide critical insights for designing efficient supported oxide catalysts through targeted doping strategies and offer new perspectives for developing highly efficient and low-energy N2O decomposition catalysts.

Metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely used in industrial and agricultural production and introduced into soils. The impact of these nanoparticles on soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emission is unclear. We conducted a microcosm experiment to investigate the effects of titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs), copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs), and aluminum oxide nanoparticles (Al2O3NPs) on soil N2O emissions and the abundance of functional genes related to N2O production/reduction. Compared to the soil without NPs addition, TiO2NPs applied to the soil produced no significant effect on N2O emissions. The denitrification process in the soil exposed to CuO NPs was inhibited by reducing the functional genes related to nitrite reductase (nirK) and increasing N2O reductase (nosZ), while CuO NPs added to the soil stimulated the cumulative N2O emissions by 92.7%. After the application of Al2O3NPs to the soil, the nitrification process was inhibited by inhibiting the functional genes of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOBamoA), and soil N2O emission was reduced by 48.6%. Large-scale application of CuO NPs in agricultural soils may stimulate the N2O emissions resulting in potential environmental risks.Keywords:nanoparticles;N2O;nitrification;denitrification

The pursuit of high energy density materials (HEDMs) with intrinsic safety has long been hindered by the energy-safety trade-off. This study proposed a hierarchical structure strategy integrating lattice stabilization and surface energy dissipation to address this challenge in HNIW. Embedding N 2 O molecules within the explosive lattice by hydrogen bonding effectively improved the oxygen balance of HNIW, resulting in the construction of HNIW/N 2 O host-guest explosives. Concurrently, polyethyleneimine (PEI) and polypyrrole (PPy) were employed for surface coating to further enhance the safety performance of explosives. The lattice-surface modifications synergistically achieved prominent mechanical stimulus buffering (IS>20 J, FS > 140 N) and enhanced phase stability (203 °C). Benefiting from the hierarchical structure, the HNIW/N 2 O@PEI and HNIW/N 2 O@PPy composites exhibited superior comprehensive characteristics including remarkable energy performance, improved safety and combustion properties. The lattice-surface optimization surpassed traditional single-scale modifications in balancing explosive energy and safety, yielding unprecedented performance integration. The work can present a scalable approach for developing next-generation energetic materials, providing valuable design insights for multifunctional material engineering.

Phase change solvents are attractive energy-efficient absorbents for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) capture due to CO 2 -rich phase formation. Potassium prolinate + water + ethanol (ProK/W/Eth) solution has shown good capture characteristics as a promising one in our previous work. In this work, absorption rate of CO 2 , solubility of N 2 O, and heat of absorption for ProK/W/Eth solution were investigated using a stirred cell reactor and a CPA201 reaction calorimeter and these results were also compared with the aqueous ProK and 30 mass% MEA solutions. Using ethanol as a solvent can substantially increase the CO 2 physical solubility and the absorption rate of CO 2 in ProK/W/Eth solutions is far higher than that in aqueous 30 mass% MEA solutions especially at a low CO 2 loading range. Solid precipitation, obtained from the liquid-to-solid phase change absorption, was analyzed by 13 C NMR and DSC-TGA. The enthalpy change for ProK/W/Eth solutions at various CO 2 loading was also discussed.
