Efficient oily wastewater treatment by a novel electroflotation-membrane separation system consisting a Ni-Cu-P membrane prepared by electroless nickel plating

Jing Wang,Binghong Chen,Hongjun Lin,Renjie Li

Electroflotation-membrane separation system with a conductive membrane has recently emerged as a promising technology for oily wastewater treatment . However, the conductive membrane prepared by electroless plating often suffers the problems of low stability and high activation cost. To solve these problems, this work proposed a new strategy regarding surface metallization of polymeric membrane by surface nickel-catalyzed electroless nickel plating of nickel‑copper‑phosphorus alloys for the first time. It was found that, addition of copper source remarkably enhanced the membranes' hydrophilicity, corrosion resistance and fouling resistance. The Ni-Cu-P membrane had an underwater oil contact angle of up to 140°, and simultaneously possessed rejection rate > 98 % with rather high flux of 65,663.0 L·m −2 ·h −1 and excellent cycling stability when separating n-hexane/water mixtures under gravity drive. The permeability is higher than the state-of-the-art membranes for oil/water separation. The Ni-Cu-P membrane as the cathode can be assembled into an electroflotation-membrane separation system, allowing to separate oil-in-water emulsion with 99 % rejection. Meanwhile, the applied electric field significantly improved membrane flux and fouling resistance (flux recovery up to 91 %) when separate kaolin suspensions. Polarization curve and Nyquist curve analysis further confirmed that addition of Cu element obviously enhanced corrosion resistance of the Ni modified membrane. This work provided a novel strategy to make up high-efficiency membranes for oily wastewater treatment.

Huasheng Jiang,Zining Wang,Palanisamy Kannan,Hui Wang,Rongfang Wang,Palaniappan Subramanian,Shan Ji

Metal/metal hydroxide hybrid heterostructures exhibits superior performances in diverse research fields, especially in catalysis due to the presence of ample grain boundary interfaces and the strong metal/metal hydroxide synergistic actions. Herein, Co(OH) 2 -Ni hybrid heterostructures with a crystalline Ni and Co(OH) 2 is prepared on the cotton fabric substrate by a simple electrochemical process . The Co(OH) 2 -Ni hybrid heterostructures are explored as a highly active catalyst for the electro-oxidation of hydrazine in an alkaline medium . The existence of ample grain boundary interfaces and promotional synergistic effect between the nanocrystalline metallic Ni and Co hybrid heterostructures lead to a very low-onset hydrazine oxidation potential of −0.06 V vs RHE. Moreover, the Co(OH) 2 -Ni hybrid heterostructured electrode exhibits excellent long-term catalytic stability.

In situ self-assembled Fe–Co–Ni–Cu multi-metal nanoparticles modified high catalytic activity electrodes for symmetric solid oxide fuel cells

Xinyue Zhang,Yichu Ma,Hengqiang Yang,Chenglong Shi,Qingjun Zhou

The development of electrode materials with high catalytic activity at intermediate temperature (600–800 °C) is essential for improving the output performance of solid oxide fuel cells. Here, we report low cobalt-based Sr 2 Fe 1.5-3x Ni x Cu x Co x Mo 0.5 O 6 (x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, SF x NCCM) as symmetrical electrode materials. With effective control of the anode side, Fe–Co–Ni–Cu nanoparticles precipitate from and are uniformly distributed across the parent surface, enhancing the electrode material's electrochemical performance. The output performance of single cell is better than that of Sr 2 Fe 1.5 Mo 0.5 O 6-δ symmetric cell without nanoparticle modification. In addition, the maximum power densities of the single cell with ∼300 μm thick Ce 0.9 Gd 0.1 O 1.95 as electrolyte and SF x NCCM as symmetrical electrode material reached 750, 620 and 621 mW cm −2 at 800 °C, respectively. The reversibility of nanoparticles exsolution and phase structure transformation are confirmed. The in-situ self-assembled electrode materials reported in this study provide a foundation for future research on fuel cell electrodes.

Magnetic-responsive Pickering emulsions based on MFe2O4 (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) for green and efficient oxidation of benzyl alcohol

Yan Wang,Xuan Wang,Yonghao Dong,Mingli Peng,Lina Guo,Mengyao Cui,Yuan He,Jiabao Yi,Huijun Ma,Huan Zhang,Haiming Fan

The selective oxidation of alcohols has drawn significant attention in heterogeneous catalysis with the increasing use of Pickering interfacial catalysis (PIC) for green transformations of alcohols. However, it is still highly desirable to design and develop a solid catalyst with easy separation and recycling, made from abundant resources through a simple synthesis route, for the selective oxidation of alcohols. In this study, ferrite nanoparticles, synthesized via a hydrothermal process, were employed to act as a stabilizer and catalyst in PIC for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol using H2O2. The ferrite nanoparticles exhibited higher catalytic performance in PIC than in acetonitrile. The turnover number (TON) of the nanocatalyst in PIC was found to be 1.5–4 times higher than that in acetonitrile, and the reaction constant in PIC (kPIC = 0.712 h−1) was almost twice that in acetonitrile (kCH3CN = 0.310 h−1) for MnFe2O4 nanoparticles. Moreover, other alcohols could also be oxidized with moderately high conversion and selectivity in PIC. Significantly, the ferrite nanocatalyst could be easily separated from PIC using a magnet for reuse, achieving 88% BzOH conversion after five cycles. The use of hazardous organic solvents was avoided in PIC, making it a more advanced, green and sustainable reaction system.

Atomically Dispersed Ni–Cu Dual Sites: Efficient Electrocatalytic Conversion of 4-Nitrophenol to p-Aminophenol in a Hybrid Acid/Alkali Flow Electrolyzer

Hongzhong Wang,Kai Chen,Junheng Huang,Chengchao He,Qinlong Zhang,Junwei Li,Zhifang Zhang,Zhenhai Wen

4-Nitrophenol (4-NP), a toxic and recalcitrant pollutant, necessitates effective remediation strategies. Here, a noble metal-free NiCu-NC electrocatalyst is developed, where dual atomic Ni–Cu sites are elegantly anchored on a rhombic dodecahedral nitrogen-doped carbon matrix, enabling selective electrochemical reduction of 4-NP into value-added p-aminophenol (4-AP). This catalyst achieves a low overpotential and a high Faradaic efficiency of 95.7% for 4-AP production. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the NiCu dual-atom configuration minimizes the energy barrier for the rate-determining step, thereby enhancing catalytic performance. Furthermore, a hybrid acid/alkali flow electrolysis cell is designed to couple the cathodic 4-NP reduction with the anodic oxygen evolution. This system maintains stable operation for over 400 h while maintaining a high Faradaic efficiency (>91%) and near-complete conversion (99%) for valorization of 4-NP. This work demonstrates a practical electrocatalytic approach for pollutant transformation and chemical production with potential implications for wastewater treatment and resource utilization.

Oxygen defect engineering at TMOx (TM = Mn, Co, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn)/TiO2 interfaces: A strategy for high-efficiency catalytic toluene degradation

Yaqi Wu,Jianhua Qian,Jinjuan Xing,Junhua Li,He Huang,Yanan Wang,Xueming Kang,Lijuan Wang,Jiasheng Xu

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as hazardous environmental pollutants emitted from chemical industries, cause significant threats to human health and ecological environment owing to their inherent toxicity and carcinogenicity. Catalytic oxidation has emerged as a promising technology for VOC elimination, enabling complete degradation of pollutants into CO 2 and H 2 O. This study investigates transition metal oxide (TMO x , TM = Mn, Co, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn)/TiO 2 catalysts for toluene degradation. Since the catalytic efficacy of TiO 2 -based catalysts critically depends on the quantity of surface oxygen vacancy (O v ) in heterogeneous processes, we engineered O v -rich interfaces by breaking atomic periodicity arrangements and generating unsaturated coordination sites. These structural modifications enhanced oxygen migration rates and increased reactive oxygen species availability. Among the synthesized catalysts, CuO/TiO 2 exhibited the highest performance, achieving 90 % toluene conversion (T 90 ) at 286 °C under a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 20,000 mL/(g·h) with an initial toluene concentration of 1000 ppm. The measurement of in-situ DRIFTS suggested that toluene oxidation process abided by the path of toluene → benzaldehyde → benzoic acid → anhydride →CO 2 and H 2 O. Furthermore, the by CuO/TiO 2 catalyst demonstrated great reusability, and long-term stability, highlighting its potential for industrial-scale VOC abatement applications.

Composition design, thermodynamic calculation and synthesis of rocksalt structure Mg–Co–Ni–Cu–Zn–O HEOs based on cluster-plus-glue-atom model

Jianjian Wang,Yue Yu,Zhiqiang Li,Hualin Wang,Shimin Liu,Tingting Yao,Weiwei Jiang,Nan Wang,Chaoqian Liu,Wanyu Ding,Zhihua Zhang,Chuang Dong

Multi-component high entropy oxides (HEOs) have attracted enormous attention due to their unique structures and potential applications. The conventional selection strategy to obtain HEOs is to search for equimolar cationic systems to maximize configurational entropy and avoid phase separation. We previously explored non-equimolar cationic rocksalt structure Mg–Co–Ni–Cu–Zn–O HEOs using cluster-plus-glue-atom model. In this paper, the mixing entropy, enthalpy and Gibbs free energy of constructed superclusters were numerically calculated and compared with the correlated crystal structure based on recent studies. It indicated the Gibbs free energy rather than mixing entropy agrees well with the phase stability of HEOs. Mg 28 Co 17 Ni 19 Cu 16 Zn 16 O 96 shows the optimal phase stability which is related to the lowest Gibbs free energy, reflecting a regular octahedral environment preferred by the cation composition in the system. Enthalpy and entropy are among important design criteria in determining the phase stability of HEOs but the function of enthalpy is obviously higher than that of entropy. This study provides a comprehensive way to access HEOs which is undoubtedly very important for the development of other non-equimolar cationic high entropy materials such as carbides , silicides , borides or nitrides .

Production of MFe2O4 (M = Zn, Ni, Cu, Co and Mn) multiple cavities microspheres with salt template to assemble a high-performance acetone gas sensor

Li Lv,Yinglin Wang,Pengfei Cheng,Yue Zhang,Yaoqiong Zhang,Zhaohui Lei,Luping Xu,Zhi Weng

In this study, a one-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method was used, utilizing template NaCl and dextrin as the porogen and structural support. The synthesized spinel MFe 2 O 4 (M = Zn, Ni, Cu, Co and Mn) microspheres with multiple cavities structure were applied to the acetone gas sensor detection. Through the characterization of the sensitive materials, the average pore diameter of the microspheres was about 60 nm. Compare with other metal cations , when M = Zn or Ni, the MFe 2 O 4 samples revealed the super gas sensitivity at working temperatures of 250 °C and 175 °C, and the response values to 100 ppm acetone were 25 and 24.3, respectively. In addition, they also exhibited excellent selectivity and long-term stability to acetone. The excellent gas sensitivity of ZnFe 2 O 4 and NiFe 2 O 4 could be attributed to the replacement of Fe with Zn and Ni ions to obtain a higher Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ atomic ratio, thereby increasing the content of adsorbed oxygen. In summary, the gas sensing performance of spinel MFe 2 O 4 oxide had been systematically studied by replacing Fe with other transition metals. The iron-containing spinel oxides are expected to be promising sensing material for gas sensors due to their rich elements and excellent activity.

Construction and boosted electromagnetic wave absorption performance of porous aggregates of multi-element doped Fe3O4/(Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) alloy with magnetic/magnetic heterostructure

Qingzhi Zhu,Xiang Luo,Haifeng Li,Jiabao Zang,Jihui Sun,Xutao Yan,Yijian Liu

Pure magnetic materials always exhibit mediocre microwave absorption performance due to the poor impedance matching and negligible dielectric loss capability. In this study, a novel porous aggregates of multi-element doped Fe 3 O 4 /(Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) alloys (denoted as DF/alloys) composite which is composed of magnetic/magnetic heterostructure with excellent microwave absorption performance were prepared. By reducing part of the ferrimagnetic spinel into ferromagnetic alloy, the saturation magnetization M s was enlarged which is beneficial to exceeding the Snoek′s limit, and the magnetic loss capability was further enhanced significantly. Furthermore, the abundant heterogeneous interfaces in the DF/alloys composites have greatly improved the dielectric loss capability and balanced the complex permittivity and the complex permeability, and achieved superior impedance matching of the magnetic/magnetic heterogeneous DF/alloys composites. When the loading ratio (DF/alloys to paraffin mass ratio) was only 30 wt%, the widest effective absorption bandwidth ( EAB ) reached 5.58 GHz (3.2 mm). when the loading ratio was up to 50 wt%, the widest EAB (6.4 GHz) was achieved at 2.0 mm and the minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) reached −49.3 dB at 4.15 GHz. As microwave absorption materials, the DF/alloys composites are extremely promising and competitive.

Optimization of Interfacial Electrons and Compressive-Tensile Strains at Lignin-Derived Carbon-Supported Multiphase Ni/Cu/MoO2 Interfaces for Boosting Large Current-Density HER

Xinyu Cao,Liancen Li,Guangfu Qian,Qizhi Xie,Yuxuan Xie,Jiawei Li,Yunpeng Wang,Minsheng Lu,Jinli Chen,Panagiotis Tsiakaras

Developing efficient pH-universal hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts is critically needed yet challenged by pH-dependent. Here, a lignin-derived carbon-supported Ni/Cu/MoO 2 heterostructure (Ni/Cu/MoO 2 @LC) through multiphase interfaces design is engineered, which displays excellent electrochemical activity, featuring low potentials of −14.4/−201.5 (acidic), −44.5/−615.7 (neutral), and −28.2/−242.3 mV (alkaline) at −10/−1000 mA cm −2 . Theoretical and experimental analysis show that the Ni/Cu/MoO 2 @LC multiphase interfaces produce a synergistic coupling of compressive-tensile strains and interfacial electron transfer effect. This synergistic effect triggers electron redistribution, tailors the electronic configuration through d -band center optimization, and balances intermediate adsorption/desorption energetics. Additionally, lignin-derived carbon self-supported micro-nano-array structure enhances gas-liquid transport and corrosion resistance, allowing Ni/Cu/MoO 2 @LC to operate stably for at least 120 h, at −500 mA cm −2 in various pH solutions. Thus, this study provides a new idea for the design of cost-effective pH-universal HER electrocatalysts and a new approach for applying lignin-derived carbon in electrocatalysis.

Enhancing Electrochemical Performance of YBa0.95K0.05Co4O7+δ Cathode via Mn/Fe/Ni/Cu/Zn Doping at Co Sites for Proton-Conductor Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Jie Zheng,Ying Li,Yongtao Huang,Zezhong Wang,Wei Zhang,Chunsheng Zhuang

The well-matched thermal expansion coefficient between YBa0.95K0.05Co4O7+δ and electrolyte materials makes it a highly promising electrode for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (H-SOFCs). However, its limited electrochemical performance hampers the enhancement of the cell power density. In this study, we significantly improved the oxygen reduction reactivity and electrochemical properties of YBa0.95K0.05Co4O7+δ by introducing transition metal dopants (Mn/Fe/Ni/Cu/Zn) at the Co site, with a doping concentration of x = 0.05. Experimental results indicate that Mn doping yields the most substantial performance enhancement. Transition metal doping modulates the material’s band gap structure and conductivity, with Mn doping narrowing the band gap and enhancing conductivity by 105%. Conductivity relaxation tests further confirm that Mn doping accelerates oxygen ion transport, reducing the relaxation time. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis shows that the oxygen vacancy concentration in the Mn-doped systems increases by 72%. Symmetric cell tests reveal that Mn doping reduces cathodic polarization impedance by 33% at 700 °C, while Fe, Ni, and Zn doping results in varying impedance increases due to competitive mechanisms. The peak power density of a single cell with the Mn-doped cathode reaches 657 mW cm–2 at 700 °C, surpassing the 531 mW cm–2 obtained with the undoped sample. This work demonstrates the efficacy of a multielement doping strategy to optimize SOFC electrode materials, offering an approach for their design.

Tuning the alloy degree for Pd-M/Al2O3 (M=Co/ Ni /Cu) bimetallic catalysts to enhance the activity and selectivity of dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole dehydrogenation

Xiang Gong,Shuyi Guo,Zhao Jiang,Bolun Yang,Tao Fang

Hydrogen is a promising candidate to substitute the fossil fuels. However, the efficient hydrogen storage technologies restrict the commercial applications. Developing new catalysts with high activity and selectivity is important for the dehydrogenation reaction in N-ethylcarbazole/dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole (NECZ/12H-NECZ) hydrogen storage system. In this work, a series of Pd-M/Al 2 O 3 (M = Co, Ni and Cu) bimetallic catalysts are synthesized successfully and show good performance in the dehydrogenation reaction of 12H-NECZ than the commercial Pd/Al 2 O 3 catalyst. The Pd 1 Co 1 /Al 2 O 3 catalyst (Practical Pd content = 2.4136 wt%) showed the highest catalytic performance with 95.34% H 2 release amount, TOF of 230.5 min −1 and 85.4% selectivity of NECZ. Combined with the characterization analysis, it can be proposed that the dehydrogenation performance of 12H-NECZ is dependent on the alloy phases , reasonable electronic structures and nanoparticle size of catalysts. The fine-tuned alloy degree and appropriate nanoparticle size of Pd 1 Co 1 /Al 2 O 3 bring the 17.7% increase of H 2 release amount and 99.5% increase of NECZ selectivity than those of Pd/Al 2 O 3 . For the bimetallic catalysts, the enhancement of selectivity of NECZ is mainly from the increase of the kinetic constant of rate-limiting step.
