Tri-metallic (Mn)CoP2/NiCoP ultrafine nanoparticles constructed by Mn doping as high performance bifunctional electrocatalysts

Chunyan Zhang,Jiaxing Luo,Shaojun Sun,Kailing Yuan,Mingxin Ran,Chuanhua Li,Xuemin Yan

The most crucial part of electrolyzing water lies in the design and preparation of the catalyst. Manganese-doped metal phosphides are often studied as catalysts for water electrolysis due to their outstanding dual-function properties. In this paper, a two-step method of in-situ hydrolysis and low-temperature phosphating is provided to prepare manganese-doped tri-metallic nickel-cobalt-based phosphides ((Mn)CoP 2 /NiCoPs) ultrafine nanoparticles. It is found that the addition of manganese led to a reduction in the unit cell size of NiCoP and CoP 2 in the catalyst. As the amount of manganese element in the raw materials increases, the doping amount of manganese in the catalyst shows an upward trend. In 1 M KOH, (Mn)CoP 2 /NiCoP-2 with the manganese doping content of 0.35 wt% shows the overpotentials of 52 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 141 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to achieve 10 mA cm −2 . For total hydrolysis reaction, it requires an overpotential of only 1.50 V in 1 M KOH and 1.48 V in simulated seawater environment. Compared with pure Co 2 P/NiCoP, the catalytic activity of (Mn)CoP 2 /NiCoP-2 is higher. This can be attributed to the doping of manganese, which reduces the oxygen content and particle size of the catalyst, and also optimizes its electronic structure.

Enhanced Alkaline Water Electrolysis Using Cr-Doped NiCoP/Ni3S2 Hollow Nanowires with Heterointerfaces as Bifunctional Catalysts

Yupeng Lu,Jiaqian Sun,Lu Wang,Jinping Wang,Rui Yang,Chunling Zuo,Xiaoshuang Chen

For the goal of mitigating energy scarcity via hydrogen production from water electrolysis, the high performance, low cost transition-metal-based catalysts are essential to be designed and manufactured. In this study, we prepare chromium-doped nickel cobalt phosphide/nickel sulfide (Cr-NiCoP/Ni3S2) heterostructured hollow nanowires on conductive nickel foam through a two-step hydrothermal method coupled with low temperature phosphorization procedure. Benefiting from the remarkable electron transport capability inherent in transition metal compounds, the large specific surface area afforded by distinctive hollow nanowire architecture, and the interfacial synergistic effect of heterostructure, the as-obtained catalyst delivers low overpotentials of 67 mV for HER and 243 mV for OER at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 in alkaline electrolyte. Additionally, in an electrolytic system where the Cr-NiCoP/Ni3S2 acts as bifunctional anode and cathode materials, the 10 mA cm–2 current density can be achieved at a cell voltage of 1.47 V with good stability. This catalyst demonstrates better performance than the majority of reported transition metal based bifunction substances. The work described in this paper not only develops a new class of catalytic materials integrating application potential and expense advantage but also provides important strategic support for the fabrication and optimization of nonprecious metal electrocatalysts.

Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Performance of Hematite Photoanode by Decorating NiCoP Nanoparticles Through a Facile Spin Coating Method

Sun Zijun,He Xiong,Liu Jinghua,Liu Baosheng,Li Hongda,Jia Xiaobo,Yu Zhiqiang,Chang Haixin

Abstract Hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) is a potential photoanode material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, but its short hole diffusion length and low water oxidation kinetics prevent its practical application. In general, the hole transport rate and the water oxidation kinetics could be improved by modifying the oxygen evolution cocatalysts (OECs) in the proper way. In this work, we designed and synthesized a bimetallic phosphides NiCoP nanoparticles (NPs) modified (Ti, Zr)-codoped hematite photoanode (TZ-H) by a facile spin coating method to achieve the uniform and close interface contact of semiconductor/OECs. Under the optimal conditions, the as-prepared photoanode exhibits high and stable PEC performance with a current density of 2.38 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which is one of the best performances of noble-metal-free hematite-based photoanodes for water oxidation. Moreover, the surface efficiency of charge separation is improved by NiCoP modification, which is increased from 59% to 91% at 1.23 V vs. RHE and reached nearly 99% at higher potential. This work not only proves that NiCoP NPs are outstanding OECs but also provides a new strategy for the design of noble-metal-free semiconductor/OECs photoanodes with high-quality interface contact. P, N-codoped carbon nanofibers confined ultra-small bimetallic NiCoP for highly efficient overall water splitting

Xueping Sun,Peng Wei,Jinxu Zhang,Songqi Gu,Ruoou Yang,Chun Fang,Qing Li,Jiantao Han,Zheng Jiang,Jianhua He

Integrating the unique metalloid behaviour of monometallic phosphides and modified local electronic/geometric structures of active sites, bimetallic phosphides have emerged as promising candidates for water splitting reaction, but they are still synthesized by toxic, corrosive, and high-temperature methods, which inevitably resulted in an increase of particle size and the decrease of catalytic activity area. Herein, the ultra-fine bimetallic NiCoP catalysts in-situ embedded in P, N-codoped carbon nanofibers (NiCoP@PNCNF) were successfully fabricated via a facile electrospinning method with the help of phytic acid. Profiting from the unique macro-structural design and micro-electronic/geometric modification, as-prepared NiCoP@PNCNF catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic performance both for HER (η 10  = 98 mV) and OER (η 10  = 260 mV) in terms of the low overpotential and robust stabilities in alkaline solution. Meanwhile, XAFS analysis further demonstrated that the remarkable catalytic performance not only attributed to the introduction of heteroatom-doped carbon fibers as their improvements in the corrosion resistance, anti-agglomeration abilities, and conductivity, but also benefited from the local electronic/geometric structure alternations as the strong synergic effects between Ni/Co and P atoms. For practical application, the water splitting performance based on NiCoP@PNCNF electrodes was also investigated and exhibited a lower splitting potential (E J=10, 1.645 V) over long-term stability tests. These insightful findings undoubtedly shed light on the design and fabrication of cost-effective and robust bifunctional transition-metal phosphides electrocatalysts.

Bimetallic Flower-like NiCoP Encapsulated in an N-Doped Carbon Shell with Enhanced Lithium Storage Properties

Haoyu Tian,Lingyu Zhao,Linlin Wang,Zijie Xia,Wenqi Tan,Zheng Jiao

It continues to be a challenge to design innovative NiCoP composite anode materials to further improve rate capacity. In this work, bimetallic flower-like NiCoP encapsulated in an N-doped carbon shell (designated as NiCoP@NC) as a high-rate capable anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) was successfully designed and synthesized. The novel structure design combines the advantages of flower-like NiCoP (core) and N-doped carbon (shell). Flower-like NiCoP offers numerous interface and redox reaction sites for improving lithium storage, while the N-doped carbon shell effectively buffers volume expansion and enhances electrical conductivity. The synergistic effect between NiCoP and the N-doped carbon shell proposes a marvelous high-rate capacity (320 mA h/g even at 5 A/g) and a good cycle life with high reversible capacity (369.8 mA h/g for 700 cycles at 3 A/g with 81% retention). An investigation of kinetics performance shows that the introduction of the N-doped carbon shell enhances the charge transfer, and the pseudocapacitive behavior dominates the rapid Li+storage of the NiCoP@NC electrode.Keywords:Li-ion batteries (LIBs);anode materials;transition bimetal phosphide;N-doped carbon shell

Hierarchical carbon layer coated NiCoP nanoparticles embedded on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes for high-performance supercapacitors

Fuyao Huang,Yuhang Jia,Shaopei Yang,Yuhong Long,Yuman Dong,Pengcheng Du

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have been widely recognized as an ideal choice for supercapacitors (SCs) due to exceptional pseudocapacitance performance. Otherwise, reasonable structural design of TMPs can overcome the defects of low rate performance and poor cycle life. Furthermore, the incorporation of carbon materials can enhance electronic conductivity, thereby enabling rapid electron transmission. Herein, we present a novel hierarchical carbon layer coated NiCoP nanoparticles embedded on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NiCoP/NCNTs), synthesized through a calcination/phosphorization process. By incorporating a carbon layer to anchor nanoscale NiCoP, an increased number of active sites and improved structural stability are achieved. Furthermore, the presence of NCNTs enhances the electronic conductivity. These combined features result in impressive performance, with NiCoP/NCNTs exhibiting an impressive specific capacitance of 1628.4 F/g at 1 A/g, and good rate capability of 78.5 % up to 50 A/g. Moreover, it also exhibits outstanding cycling stability, maintaining a capacitance retention of 71.4% after 10 000 cycles. Moreover, the asymmetric SCs based on NiCoP/NCNTs and AC deliver a high energy density of 45.46 Wh/kg, and exhibit excellent cycling stability of 92.5% after 5000 cycles. These results highlight the potential of NiCoP/NCNTs as a novel battery-type electrode material for energy-storage devices.

Directional electron transport and strong chloridion repulsion enabled by Hierarchical NiCo2O4/NiCoP heterojunction for efficient seawater oxidation

Yi-Peng Dong,Jiang-Bo Chen,Jie Ying,Yu-Xuan Xiao,Yuan Tian,Ling Shen,Lei Xia,Ge Tian,Si-Ming Wu,Yi Lu,Xiao-Yu Yang

Optimizing the efficiencies of both electron transport and chloridion repulsion are highly desired for achieving high-performance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts in seawater oxidation, but still remains a huge challenge. In this study, an efficient synthetic method is developed to successfully synthesize a novel heterogeneous hollow polyhedron nanocages (denoted as NiCo 2 O 4 /NiCoP) with directional electron transport and strong chloridion repulsion properties, which profits from its diverse work functions and anion electrostatic repulsion in heterojunction nanostructure, respectively. Accordingly, NiCo 2 O 4 /NiCoP exhibits superior OER activity in 1 M KOH (η = 325 mV@10 mA cm −2 ) and alkaline simulated seawater (η = 340 mV@10 mA cm −2 ), as well as outstanding long-term stability. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the construction of NiCo 2 O 4 /NiCoP heterojunction promotes the directional electron transport in the heterogeneous interface and enables strong chloridion repulsion in comparison with individual NiCo 2 O 4 and NiCoP, thus largely improving its OER performance in alkaline simulated seawater.

MOF-derived in situ carbon-coated NiCoP/Ti3C2Tx with interfacial coupling for high-performance overall water splitting

Lichan Wu,Liuyan Zhang,Yidong Huang,Zeyi Guan,Renyu Zhou,Yan Pan,Danting Wu,Gengzhe Shen,Yanmei Zhang

Developing efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts capable of facilitating water splitting to produce hydrogen and oxygen remains a significant challenge. This study presents a controllable conversion of MOFs to carbon-coated NiCoP nanostructures via low-temperature phosphidation using a NiCo-MOF/Ti 3 C 2 T x precursor, leading to the construction of the NiCoP@C/Ti 3 C 2 T x bifunctional electrocatalyst. Characterization of the synthesized NiCoP@C/Ti 3 C 2 T x composite material and electrochemical testing revealed that the material exhibits high catalytic activity in both HER and OER. At a current density of 10   mA   cm −2 , the overpotential for HER is measured at 58   mV with a Tafel slope of 60   mV dec −1 , while the overpotential for OER is found to be 240   mV, with a Tafel slope of 42   mV dec −1 . The potential required to achieve a current density of 10   mA   cm −2 for overall water splitting is 1.53   V, which is lower than commercial Pt/C and RuO 2 electrocatalysts. Additionally, the material demonstrates excellent electrocatalytic performance at higher current densities. The outstanding electrocatalytic performance is attributed to the effective stabilizing effect of the carbon-coated layer on the high-activity NiCoP particles, thereby suppressing the loss of active sites during the reaction. Moreover, the strong interfacial coupling effect between NiCoP and Ti 3 C 2 T x significantly enhances the interfacial charge transfer kinetics, consequently improving catalytic efficiency.

On-site evolution of bifunctional NiCoP nanosheet electrode for electrocatalytic Co-produce acetate and hydrogen from ethanol

Nanjia Yang,Yongsheng Wang,Yanan Chen,Yizhen Li,Jiansheng Wang,Chuangyi Zhang,Kaifeng Wang,Yiling Feng,Yuxin Zhu,Wei Zhu,Zhongbin Zhuang

Conventional water electrolysis for hydrogen production suffers from high energy consumption and low-value anodic products. Herein, we present a bifunctional NiCoP nanosheet array electrode on nickel foam for electrocatalytic ethanol reforming, enabling simultaneous production of hydrogen and acetate. The electrode exhibits high performance for both anodic ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) and cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media, achieving a current density of 100 mA cm −2 at an EOR potential of only 1.325 V vs. RHE and an HER overpotential of 165 mV, with a high Faradaic efficiency of over 90% toward acetate. A symmetric electrolyzer assembled with NiCoP electrodes delivers 100 mA cm −2 at a cell voltage of 1.542 V, significantly lower than that of conventional water electrolysis (1.656 V) and it shows high catalytic stability during the 50 h' operation. Mechanistic studies reveal that the phosphide structure facilitates the in situ formation of stable high-valence Ni species and a synergistic Ni Co effect at the anode, while generating a metal–hydroxide interface at the cathode, jointly contributing to the enhanced bifunctional performance.

Constructing P-CoMoO4@NiCoP heterostructure nanoarrays on Ni foam as efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting

Ning You,Shuai Cao,Mengqiu Huang,Xiaoming Fan,Kun Shi,Haijian Huang,Zhangxian Chen,Zeheng Yang,Weixin Zhang

Improving catalytic activity and durabilty through the structural and compositional development of bifunctional electrocatalysts with low cost, high activity and stability is a challenging issue in electrochemical water splitting. Herein, we report the fabrication of heterostructured P-CoMoO 4 @NiCoP on a Ni foam substrate through interface engineering, by adjusting its composition and architecture. Benefitting from the tailored electronic structure and exposed active sites, the heterostructured P-CoMoO 4 @NiCoP/NF arrays can be coordinated to boost the overall water splitting. In addition, the superhydrophilic and superaerophobic properties of P-CoMoO 4 @NiCoP/NF make it conducive to water dissociation and bubble separation in the electrocatalytic process. The heterostructured P-CoMoO 4 @NiCoP/NF exhibits excellent bifunctional electrocatalysis activity with a low overpotential of 66 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for HER and 252 mV at 100 mA cm −2 for OER. Only 1.62 V potential is required to deliver 20 mA cm −2 in a two-electrode electrolysis system, providing a decent overall water splitting performance. The rational construction of the heterostructure makes it possible to regulate the electronic structures and active sites of the electrocatalysts to promote their catalytic activity.

Electronic synergy to boost the performance of NiCoP-NWs@FeCoP-NSs anodes for flexible lithium-ion batteries

Qian Wu,Linlin Wang,Xin Mao,Yujie Yang,Li Yan,Suyuan Zeng,Kangning Zhao,Qiu-an Huang,Minmin Liu,Xiaojing Liu,Jiujun Zhang,Xueliang Sun

Research and development of flexible lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high energy density and long cycle life for portable and wearable electronic devices has been a cutting-edge effort in recent years. In this paper, a novel flexible self-standing anode for LIBs is fabricated successfully, in which NiCoP nanowires (NWs) coated with FeCoP nanosheets (NSs) to form core–shell heterostructure arrays are grown on carbon cloth (CC) (designated as NiCoP-NWs@FeCoP-NSs/CC). The obtained NiCoP-NWs@FeCoP-NSs/CC anode integrates the merits of the one-dimensional (1D) NiCoP-NW core and two-dimensional (2D) FeCoP-NS shell and the CC to show a high lithium-ion storage capacity with long-term cycling stability (1172.6 mA h g−1 at 1 A g−1 up to 300 cycles with a capacity retention of 92.6%). The kinetics studies demonstrate that the pseudocapacitive behavior dominates the fast lithium storage of this anode material. For fundamental mechanistic understanding, density functional theory (DFT) analysis is carried out, and manifests that electronic synergy can boost the superior performance of the NiCoP-NWs@FeCoP-NSs/CC anode. The assembled LiFePO4//NiCoP-NWs@FeCoP-NSs/CC full battery gives a discharge capacity of 469.9 mA h g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 after 500 cycles, and even at 2 A g−1, it still can retain 581.5 mA h g−1. Besides, the soft pack full battery can keep the LED lit continuously when it is folded at different angles and maintain brightness for a period of time, highlighting the large application potential of this flexible LIB for wearable electronic devices. This work provides an idea for the design and construction of advanced metal phosphide flexible electrodes for LIBs.

Investigating the transformation and capacitive performance of Al-induced NiCoP nanosheets as an advanced electrode material for supercapacitors

Peiyuan Ji,Xiang Zhang,Jing Wan,Chengshuang Zhang,Qianxi Yang,Xuemei Zhang,Li-Yong Gan,Yi Xi

Challenges, such as limited active sites and undesirable cyclic stability, still hinder the practical applications of Ni-Co phosphides (NCP) based electrode materials. To solve those issues, Al-induced NCP nanosheets (NCAP) decorated on nickel foam were successfully fabricated and applied as a high-performance binder-free electrode material for alkaline supercapacitors . The transformation of NCAP during the reaction with alkaline electrolyte was also investigated. NCAP has a series of irreversible changes with the enhancement of the capacitive performance during the initial reaction with KOH to the final form of the Al-induced Ni-Co phosphides@layered double hydroxides (NCAP@LDHs) with the stable composite nanostructure . Moreover, the Density Functional Theory analysis results show that Al not only adjusts the density of states and ions migration barrier of the newly formed LDHs but also enhances the synergetic behavior between the LDHs and NCAP overall conductivity of the composites. So, a higher capacity of 1138.7 C/g was achieved in the NCAP@LDHs system compared with 643.5 C/g of NCP. The as-assembled hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) with satisfactory specific energy and specific power could light 160 LEDs and a hygrometer successfully, which suggests the potential to be applied in the energy storage field.
