Pinning effect of lattice co enhances lattice oxygen regeneration in NiFe-LDH for oxygen evolution reaction

Xianshu Qiao,Qishuang Zhu,Guangyao Hou,Zewei Pang,Hongjun Kang

NiFe-based catalysts are widely recognized as the optimal binary-metal-based catalyst for the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water electrolysis. However, simultaneously improving the OER activity and stability of NiFe-based catalysts remains a challenge because the rapid lattice oxygen consumption of the NiFe-based catalysts leads to irrepressible Ni and Fe leaching and structural collapse. Herein, we report that lattice Co acts as a doping source to induce a pinning effect, effectively promoting lattice oxygen regeneration in NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) and thereby simultaneously improving its activity and stability. The Co-doped NiFe-LDH (Co-NiFe-LDH) exhibits high OER performance with a low overpotential of 195 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and maintains stable operation over 500 h at 50 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. Experimental and theoretical studies show that introducing Co atoms into the NiFe-LDH catalyst reduces Ni O covalency due to enhanced electron localization between Ni 3d and O 2p orbitals. This electronic modulation simultaneously decreases the adsorption energy of OH/O species and the conversion energy from *OH to *O, thereby enhancing the lattice oxygen regeneration, which dynamically improves the O O coupling processes and maintains the structural stability of NiFe-LDH.

Alkaline water electrolysis offers a promising route for large-scale hydrogen production, but its efficiency is limited by the sluggish kinetics of both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we designed a hierarchical composite electrocatalyst comprising iridium-doped nickel-cobalt phosphide nanoparticles (Ir-NiCoP/Ni5P4) encapsulated within nickel-iron layered double hydroxide nanosheets (NiFe-LDH). Oxygen vacancies (OV) were engineered on the surface via sodium borohydride reduction, yielding an optimized catalyst denoted as Ir-NiCoP/Ni5P4@NiFe-LDH-1-OV. The optimized catalyst delivers low overpotentials of 52.7 mV for HER and 197.3 mV for OER at 10 mA cm-2 and maintains remarkable stability over 100 h for overall water splitting. Moreover, the Ir-NiCoP/Ni5P4@NiFe-LDH catalyst exhibits overpotentials of 76.7 and 101.3 mV for HER and the ammonia oxidation reaction A in 1 M KOH + NH3·H2O, respectively.

2D-2D growth of NiFe LDH nanoflakes on montmorillonite for cationic and anionic dye adsorption performance

De Bin Jiang,Chuan Jing,Yunsong Yuan,Li Feng,Xiaoying Liu,Fan Dong,Biqing Dong,Yu Xin Zhang

NiFe layered double hydroxides nanoflakes decorated montmorillonite (MMT@NiFe LDH) was successfully prepared by a one-pot hydrothermal method . The 2D-2D growth MMT@NiFe LDH was utilized as an effective adsorbent for removal of anionic dye of methyl orange (MO) and cationic dye of methylene blue (MB). The mole ratio of Ni 2+ /Fe 3+ could quite influence the interlayer spacing, surface area per unit charge and the ultrathin hexagonal laminated morphology of NiFe LDH decorated on the surface of MMT. Various characterization techniques were conducted to identify it, such as XRD, FT-IR, TG-DTA, BET, XPS and SEM. Under the optimal conditions, the Langmuir-fitted maximum adsorption capacities for MO and MB are 108.80 mg g −1 and 99.18 mg g −1 , respectively. Adsorption kinetics for MO and MB are both verified to be fit in with pseudo-second-order model. This work suggests a facile pathway to synthesize desirable bifunctional adsorbent for cationic and anionic dyes, which provides the potential application for the actual wastewater purification.

Anti-osteosarcoma trimodal synergistic therapy using NiFe-LDH and MXene nanocomposite for enhanced biocompatibility and efficacy

Yani Xu,Lan Yang,Min Li,Haozhou Shu,Na Jia,Yunzhen Gao,Rongying Shi,Xiaojia Yang,Zhirong Zhang,Ling Zhang

Osteosarcoma is usually resistant to immunotherapy and, thus primarily relies on surgical resection and high-dosage chemotherapy. Unfortunately, less invasive or toxic therapies such as photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemodynamic therapy (CDT) generally failed to show satisfactory outcomes. Adequate multimodal therapies with proper safety profiles may provide better solutions for osteosarcoma. Herein, a simple nanocomposite that synergistically combines CDT, PTT, and chemotherapy for osteosarcoma treatment was fabricated. In this composite, small 2D NiFe-LDH flakes were processed into 3D hollow nanospheres via template methods to encapsulate 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) with high loading capacity. The nanospheres were then adsorbed onto larger 2D Ti 3 C 2 MXene monolayers and finally shielded by bovine serum albumin (BSA) to form 5-FU@NiFe-LDH/Ti 3 C 2 /BSA nanoplatforms (5NiTiB). Both in vitro and in vivo data demonstrated that the 5-FU induced chemotherapy, NiFe-LDH driven chemodynamic effects, and MXene-based photothermal killing collectively exhibited a synergistic “all-in-one” anti-tumor effect. 5NiTiB improved tumor suppression rate from <5 % by 5-FU alone to ∼80.1 %. This nanotherapeutic platform achieved higher therapeutic efficacy with a lower agent dose, thereby minimizing side effects. Moreover, the composite is simple to produce, enabling the fine-tuning of dosages to suit different requirements. Thus, the platform is versatile and efficient, with potential for further development.

Robust CoP@NiFe LDH/Ni heterostructured electrodes for efficient overall water splitting with high current density

Tiantian Liu,Xiaomei Yu,Shuang Yu,Huijing Yang,Qimeng Sun,Chengduo Wang,Songjie Li,Jin You Zheng

Alkaline water electrolysis techniques have enormous potential for industrial-scale hydrogen generation, but a lack of effective and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts capable of steady high-current density operation has hampered progress. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been considered promising OER electrocatalysts, but their poor electrical conductivity impedes hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. Integrating LDHs with transition metal phosphides (TMPs) can potentially achieve bifunctional capability by overcoming individual limitations. Herein, CoP@NiFe LDH/Ni heterostructured catalyst was rapidly synthesized by a scalable two-step electrodeposition method. The integration of NiFe LDH with CoP enhanced its electrical conductivity. Meanwhile, electron transfer occurred from the metal atoms to the more electronegative phosphorus, facilitating phosphorus to act as a proton acceptor and expedite the HER process. Benefiting from the synergistic integration and optimized electronic structure, CoP@NiFe LDH/Ni exhibited excellent alkaline water-splitting performances with low overpotentials of 260 mV for HER and 351 mV for OER at 400 mA/cm 2 . The CoP@NiFe LDH/Ni two-electrode-based alkaline electrolyzer displayed a cell voltage of 2.13 V and stable operation for 100 h at a high current density of 1000 mA/cm 2 . This work elucidates a strategy to tackle critical challenges impeding the design and preparation of high-current-density tolerant bifunctional electrocatalysts.

NiFe-LDH nanosheets with high activity in three dimensions on NiFe foam electrode for water oxidation

Fengzhan Si,Yan Zhang,Yue Liang,Xiaomin Kang,Jianwen Liu,Xian-Zhu Fu,Jing-Li Luo

Water decomposition is the most promising system for developing renewable energy, but the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the key limiting factor. Recently, inorganic nanomaterials have been widely used as an effective catalyst for the stimulation of OER kinetics, for which the subsequent dispersion and the current collector are essential. We present a three-dimensional NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) synthesized by electrochemical corrosion , with increased electrochemical performance for electrocatalytic water splitting. Electrochemical measurements reveal that the NiFe-LDH has a lower Tafel slope of 46 mVˑdec −1 compared with the NiFe foam. The resulting electrode had a current density of 50 mAˑcm −2 and a remarkably low overpotential of 150 mV. Theoretical calculations and experimental observations showed and explained NiFe-LDH-90 electrode has high alkaline medium endurance, implying excellent OER electrocatalytic activity . The produced composite is expected to bring new insights into the design of foam electrocatalyst materials for OER.

Exploring the photoelectrochemical process through surface states of plasmonic Ag-loaded NiFe-LDH-modified CuWO4 photoanode

Ruikai Wang,Zhichao Hao,Haiyan Li,Chenghui Xia,Bohua Dong,Lixin Cao

Optimizing the interfacial action of photoanode for photoelectrochemical (PEC) behavior to facilitate charge transport is essential for enhancing solar-to-fuel efficiency. Herein, a typical CuWO 4 /NiFe-LDH/Ag photoanode was reported and an alternative pathway for charge transfer in the PEC process through surface states mechanism was elucidated. In particular, the layer double hydroxides (NiFe-LDH) acted as charge-transfer agents to facilitate the transfer of photogenerated carriers; while the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of the Ag provided hot electrons, which increased the carrier concentration and promoted the charge separation. The influence of presence of surface states on the PEC process was systematically illustrated. Experimental results indicated that the optimized CuWO 4 /NiFe-LDH/Ag photoanode displayed a photocurrent that was more than an order of magnitude larger than that of the pure CuWO 4 (increasing from 0.30 mA cm −2 to 1.45 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE), accompanied by favorable electrochemical impedance and stability (maintaining 92.4%). Importantly, increasing the available filled surface states could be beneficial in enhancing the PEC behavior. This work provided additional insights into photoanode charge transport in PEC processes.

Scalable room-temperature synthesis of NiFe LDH/FeOOH with Cr vacancies for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Lei Zhou,Xiayuan Yang,Xin Zhang,Mingzhe Li,Kepi Chen,Yuzhen Lv,Jin Zhang,Wei Zhou

It is of great significance to develop energy-saving and scalable synthetic methods for high-performance electrodes in green hydrogen production. Here we report a green room-temperature synthesis to produce integrated electrode with Cr-doped NiFe LDH/FeOOH nanosheets grown on iron foam. This simple one-step corrosion strategy can fabricate the electrode with an area up to 600 cm 2 . Through in situ self-activation process, the obtained Cr v -NiFeOOH/FeOOH@IF electrode exhibits excellent OER activity and durability, offering ultralow overpotentials of 279.3 and 308.4 mV to drive high current densities of 500 and 1000 mA cm −2 and operating steadily at industrial-level current density of 1000 mA cm −2 over 200 hrs with a high potential retention of 98.2 %. In situ electrochemical tests and theoretical calculations reveal the synergistic kinetics modulation. Both Cr vacancies and NiFeOOH/FeOOH heterostructure can accelerate water oxidation process by optimizing the adsorption energy of the intermediates. DFT calculations confirm Cr vacancies can further reduce the rate-determining step (RDS) energy barrier of the heterostructure. This work offers an economical and scalable corrosion strategy to produce high-efficient OER electrocatalysts toward industrial water splitting.

Interfacial electronic modulation and coupling of NiFe LDH via α-Co(OH)2 for enhanced oxygen evolution

Mengke Li,Yang Yang,Yajie Zhang,XinZhuo Liu,Yulan Li,Xiaobin Niu

NiFe-layered double hydroxides (NiFe LDHs) are regarded as outstanding electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but the inherent charge transport limitations hinder their practical application. Herein, we developed a 3D hierarchical α-Co(OH) 2 /NiFe LDH/NF composite catalyst via a simple electrodeposition-hydrothermal method. The introduction of α-Co(OH) 2 enables interfacial electron modulation with NiFe LDH, driving electron transfer from Ni/Co sites to Fe centers via multi-pathway coupling channels (Ni–O–Fe, Ni–O–Co, Co–O–Fe). This electron redistribution creates an optimized coordination environment that promotes the formation of high-valence Ni and Co species, subsequently facilitating the in situ formation of highly active phases (γ-NiFeOOH and CoOOH) during the OER process. The derived γ-NiFeOOH provides superior intrinsic activity, while the coexisting. CoOOH significantly enhances charge transport due to its high electronic conductivity. As a result, the composite achieves an overpotential of only 285 mV at a current density of 500 mA cm −2 , outperforming both NiFe LDH (372 mV) and α-Co(OH) 2 (441 mV). Additionally, this catalyst shows an excellent long-term stability at 100 mA cm −2 for 120 h. This work demonstrates that interfacial electronic modulation offers a strategy for designing efficient and durable OER catalysts capable of operating at industrial current densities.

Coordination-Mediated Heterogeneous Nucleation Enables Self-Supported Ni(OH)2/NiFe-LDH Electrodes for AEM Water Electrolysis

Xinyi Han,Ziliang Deng,Yongping Yang,Zipeng Zhao

Self-supported electrodes represent a promising anode architecture for anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers; however, their practical implementation is hindered by an insufficient understanding of their formation mechanisms and the consequently limited catalytic efficiency and stability. In this work, we developed a self-supported electrode comprising a composite catalyst of β-Ni(OH) 2 and NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH), grown on nickel felt (denoted as Ni(OH) 2 /NiFe-LDH/NFt) via a one-step hydrothermal process. We systematically investigated and clarified the role of NH 4 F in governing the synthesis of self-supported Ni(OH) 2 /NiFe-LDH/NFt. The coordination effect of F − with Fe 3+ and etching effect of NH 4 + on the surface oxide layer of nickel felt leads to favorable heterogeneous nucleation. Moreover, the etching effect provides an additional Ni source that favors the deposition of Ni(OH) 2 on NiFe-LDH. However, excess NH 4 + leads to the formation of Ni-based complex compounds in solution during the hydrothermal process and suppresses the deposition of Ni(OH) 2. When applying as the Ni(OH) 2 /NiFe-LDH/NFt anode catalyst in practical anion exchange membrane water electrolysis, it requires only 1.81 V to deliver 1.0 A cm −2 and exhibits outstanding durability, with no noticeable performance decay after 750 h of continuous operation at 0.5 A cm −2 .

Interfacial electronic modulation of Pd/NiFe LDH heterostructure for selective electrooxidation of ethylene glycol to glycolic acid

Qiang Ren,Jiongliang Yuan,Donglin Song,Xinlu Xiong,Jianjun Wei,Xu Xiang

Pd/NiFe LDH heterointerfaces are constructed for electrooxidation of EG to GA. • Pd/NiFe LDH/NF reaches 100 mA cm −2 at 0.58 V vs. RHE for EGOR. • Pd/NiFe LDH heterointerface enhances OH – adsorption and weakens GA adsorption. The electrooxidation of ethylene glycol (EG) to glycolic acid (GA) is limited by poor OH – adsorption on Pd-based catalysts. In this work, a Pd/NiFe LDH/NF heterostructured catalyst was constructed by depositing Pd on NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) supported on nickel foam (NF) for efficient ethylene glycol electrooxidation (EGOR). The Pd/NiFe LDH heterointerface regulates the electronic structure of Pd sites, thereby enhancing the adsorption and activation of EG on Pd sites. And the heterointerface facilitates OH – adsorption, which promotes the conversion of C2 oxygenated intermediates toward GA. Moreover, Pd/NiFe LDH/NF shows relatively weak adsorption toward GA, which favors GA release from active sites and suppresses its further oxidation. Through this interfacial electronic modulation, Pd/NiFe LDH/NF delivers excellent EGOR performance, reaching 100 mA cm −2 at 0.58 V vs. RHE and achieving a maximum GA Faradaic efficiency of 95.7%. This work provides an interfacial design strategy for regulating EGOR over Pd-based catalysts and improving GA selectivity. Self-supporting NiFe LDH-MoSx integrated electrode for highly efficient water splitting at the industrial electrolysis conditions

Han Zhang,Guoqiang Shen,Xinying Liu,Bo Ning,Chengxiang Shi,Lun Pan,Xiangwen Zhang,Zhen-Feng Huang,Ji-Jun Zou

Developing effective and practical electrocatalyst under industrial electrolysis conditions is critical for renewable hydrogen production . Herein, we report the self-supporting NiFe LDH-MoS x integrated electrode for water oxidation under normal alkaline test condition (1 M KOH at 25 °C) and simulated industrial electrolysis conditions (5 M KOH at 65 °C). Such optimized electrode exhibits excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with overpotential of 195 and 290 mV at current density of 100 and 400 mA·cm −2 under normal alkaline test condition. Notably, only overpotential of 156 and 201 mV were required to achieve the current density of 100 and 400 mA·cm −2 under simulated industrial electrolysis conditions. No significant degradations were observed after long-term durability tests for both conditions. When using in two-electrode system, the operational voltages of 1.44 and 1.72 V were required to achieve a current density of 10 and 100 mA·cm −2 for the overall water splitting test (NiFe LDH-MoS x /INF || 20% Pt/C). Additionally, the operational voltage of employing NiFe LDH-MoS x /INF as both cathode and anode merely require 1.52 V at 50 mA·cm −2 at simulated industrial electrolysis conditions. Notably, a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWEs) using NiFe LDH-MoS x /INF as an anode catalyst exhibited an energy conversion efficiency of 71.8% at current density of 400 mA·cm −2 in 1 M KOH at 60 °C. Further experimental results reveal that sulfurized substrate not only improved the conductivity of NiFe LDH, but also regulated its electronic configurations and atomic composition, leading to the excellent activity. The easy-obtained and cost-effective integrated electrodes are expected to meet the large-scale application of industrial water electrolysis.
