Optimizing surface structure with Cu nanodots-decorated NiMoO4 nanostructures to enhance electrocatalytic water splitting

Adel Al-Salihy,Jing Hu,Ce Liang,Abdulwahab Salah,Ahmed Bahgat Radwan,Ping Xu

The development of efficient, stable, and cost-effective electrocatalysts is crucial for advancing water-splitting technologies toward sustainable hydrogen production. This study introduces nickel molybdate nanorod-nanoflower (NiMoO 4 NRFs) blends decorated with copper nanodots (Cu NDs) on nickel foam (NF) as a dual electrocatalyst. Under alkaline conditions, the Cu NDs/NiMoO 4 NRFs/NF catalyst demonstrated impressive catalytic performance, requiring only −98 mV overpotential for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 208 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 10 mA cm −2 . Tafel slope analysis confirmed efficient kinetics, while impedance spectroscopy and capacitance measurements revealed enhanced charge transfer and abundant active sites. The catalyst demonstrated excellent stability for over 160 h, with improved performance after extended durability tests. It achieved a cell voltage of 1.57 V for overall water splitting at 10 mA cm −2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed optimal Gibbs free energy for hydrogen adsorption (ΔG *H  = −0.03 eV) and suitable oxygen evolution adsorption energy (ΔG *OOH  − ΔG *OH  = 2.72 eV), along with a lower water splitting barrier (ΔG b  = 0.57 eV), supported by synergistic effects between Cu NDs and NiMoO 4 . Structural characterization confirmed uniform Cu nanodot decoration, enhancing electron transfer. This work presents a scalable, cost-effective approach to high-performance electrocatalysts for sustainable energy.

Engineering antibonding orbital occupancy of NiMoO4-supported Ru nanoparticles for enhanced chlorine evolution reaction

Dianzhi Zhang,Haiming Gong,Tao Liu,Jiaguo Yu,Panyong Kuang

Chlorine evolution reaction (CER) is crucial for industrial-scale production of high-purity Cl 2 . Despite the development of classical dimensionally stable anodes to enhance CER efficiency, the competitive oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a barrier to achieving high Cl 2 selectivity. Herein, a binder-free electrode, Ru nanoparticles (NPs)-decorated NiMoO 4 nanorod arrays (NRAs) supported on Ti foam (Ru-NiMoO 4 /Ti), was designed for active CER in saturated NaCl solution (pH = 2). The Ru-NiMoO 4 /Ti electrode exhibits a low overpotential of 20 mV at 10 mA cm −2 current density, a high Cl 2 selectivity exceeding 90%, and robust durability for 90h operation. The marked difference in Tafel slopes between CER and OER indicates the high Cl 2 selectivity and superior reaction kinetics of Ru-NiMoO 4 /Ti electrode. Further studies reveal a strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between Ru and NiMoO 4 , facilitating electron transfer through the Ru–O bridge bond and increasing the Ru 3d–Cl 2p antibonding orbital occupancy, which eventually results in weakened Ru–Cl bonding, promoted Cl desorption, and enhanced Cl 2 evolution. Our findings provide new insights into developing electrodes with enhanced CER performance through antibonding orbital occupancy engineering.

Ru doped NiMoO4 nanoarray as a high-efficiency electrocatalyst for nitrite reduction to ammonia

Guoguo Wang,Qiuyue Chen,Jing Zhang,Xuguan An,Qian Liu,Lisi Xie,Weitang Yao,Xuping Sun,Qingquan Kong

The electrocatalytic reduction of nitrite to recyclable ammonia (NH 3 ) is essential to maintain nitrogen balance and meet growing energy requirements. Herein, we report that Ru doped honeycomb NiMoO 4 nanosheet with copious oxygen vacancies grown on nickel foam substrate has been prepared by a facile hydrothermal synthesis and immersion process, which can act as an efficient electrocatalyst for NH 3 synthesis by reduction of nitrite. By optimizing the concentration of RuCl 3 solution, 0.01Ru-NiMoO 4 /NF possesses excellent NO 2 − RR performance with NH 3 yield of 20249.17 ± 637.42 μg h −1 cm −2 at −0.7 V and FE of 95.56 ± 0.72 % at −0.6 V. When assembled into a Zn–NO 2 − battery, it provides a remarkable level of power density of 13.89 mW cm −2 , outperforming the performance of virtually all previous reports. The efficient adsorption and activation of NO 2 − over Ru-doped NiMoO 4 with oxygen vacancy have been verified by density functional theory calculations, as well as the possible reaction pathway.

Interfacial synergism in NiMoO4/FeOOH heterostructure for enhanced alkaline oxygen evolution and urea oxidation

Junyi Chen,Jing Wang,Dongsheng Lou,Yingying Xiang,Tongming Sun,Yanfeng Tang,Minmin Wang

FeOOH with excellent catalytic properties for oxygen evolution and also considered to be a true active site has attracted great interest in recent years. However, the intrinsic low conductivity limits its catalytic performance. Herein, a one-dimensional core-shell NiMoO4/FeOOH heterojunction with high OER activity and stability was developed. At current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2, low overpotentials of 194 and 266 mV are need to drive oxygen evolution, meanwhile, the electrode exhibits high catalytic kinetics with small Tafel slopes of 53.4 mV dec-1 and excellent stability over 100 hours. Further analysis showed that the ultrathin FeOOH layer (~5 nm) uniformly covered the surface of NiMoO4 nanorods, acting as an active species and facilitating the surface change transfer to the interior. The internal NiMoO4 cores, on the other hand, provides reliable electron transmission as a highly conductive medium, and can effectively overcome the low conductivity of FeOOH. DFT calculations further manifest the strong electronic interactions between NiMoO4 and FeOOH species. The NiMoO4 core serves as mass transport of active materials is beneficial to tune the adsorption energy of OH- on the surface of electrocatalysts.

Engineering built-in electric field in NiMoO4/FeOOH heterostructures for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Yiwen Chen,Jun Guo,Penglong Li,Buming Chen,Hui Huang

A polarized crystalline/amorphous interface is constructed for OER catalysis. • Built-in electric fields regulate dynamic electrochemical reconstruction. • Efficient hydrogen production is achieved under harsh alkaline conditions. Efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts are essential for industrial-scale hydrogen production, yet regulating electrochemical reconstruction while maintaining structural stability remains challenging. Herein, a crystalline-weakly crystalline NiMoO 4 @FeOOH heterostructure is constructed to enable built-in electric field (BEF)-driven reconstruction regulation. The Fermi-level mismatch at the heterointerface induces charge redistribution and generates a polarized BEF, which directs the reconstruction pathway toward highly active NiFeOOH species while suppressing excessive structural degradation. The optimized catalyst achieves a low overpotential of 255 mV at 100 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 52.1 mV dec −1 , and stable operation for 100 h in 30 wt% KOH at 80 °C, with an energy consumption of 4.84 kWh Nm −3 H 2 . Operando Raman, in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and XPS analyses reveal that the BEF accelerates Ni oxidation, promotes OH − adsorption, and facilitates interfacial charge transfer during reconstruction. Density functional theory calculations further confirm optimized oxygen intermediate adsorption and reduced reaction barriers. This work establishes a BEF-driven electrochemical reconstruction strategy for coupling interfacial electronic regulation with dynamic catalyst evolution toward high-performance OER electrocatalysts. Fe/P Dual-Doped NiMoO4 with Hierarchical Structure for Urea Electrolysis-Assisted Hydrogen Production

Wenxiang Sheng,Xiaoxing Zhou,Yuanhang Ma,Irsa Tariq,Dong Xu,Ping Chen,Peng Li

The urea oxidation reaction (UOR) presents a sustainable pathway for energy-saving hydrogen production by replacing the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water electrolysis. However, developing efficient and stable UOR catalysts remains challenging. NiMoO4 has emerged as a highly efficient UOR catalyst due to its synergistic intermetallic interactions and tunable electronic structure. Leveraging heteroatom doping, we engineered an Fe,P-codoped NiMoO4 nanosheet array anchored on nickel foam (Fe,P-NiMnO4/NF) with dandelion-like hierarchical architecture via a facile hydrothermal-phosphorization approach. Systematic characterization demonstrates that Fe doping creates a porous hierarchical structure, facilitating mass transport and exposing abundant active sites, while P doping simultaneously optimizes the electronic configuration and enhancing hydrophilicity, leading to an expanding electrochemical active surface area. The resulting catalyst exhibits exceptional performance, achieving a current density of 100 mA cm–2 at just 1.345 V (vs RHE) for UOR, alongside a low HER overpotential of 270 mV at the same current density. When employed in a two-electrode overall urea splitting (OUS) system, it delivers 100 mA cm–2 at a cell voltage of 1.6 V with outstanding long-term stability of 50 h. This work introduces a design strategy for high-efficiency electrocatalysts in energy-efficient hydrogen production through urea-assisted electrolysis.

NiMoO4@CoFe-LDH Anode Design to Improve Oxygen Bubble Transport in Dynamic Water Electrolysis

Yan Yin,Sipu Wang,Bin Chen,Anqi Zhang,Lianqin Wang,Fuqiang Bai,Tianyou Wang,Junfeng Zhang,Zhizhao Che

Direct water electrolysis using renewable energy offers a promising approach to green hydrogen production. Fluctuations in power supply cause gas bubbles to accumulate on the electrode surface, leading to segmented plug flow that hampers electrode activity and durability. To tackle the ongoing challenges of gas bubble accumulation in electrocatalytic systems, this study presents a NiMoO 4 @CoFe-LDH composite electrode with a 3D layered hierarchical structure designed to establish an effective gas-liquid-solid triple-phase interface. This distinct heterogeneous structure features a superhydrophilic surface, which enhances the active surface area and bubble generation sites, promoting oxygen bubble release and improving charge transfer. This bubble behavior synergistically enhances the high efficiency, dynamic response, and low load adaptability of the electrolyzer by avoiding high-current mass-transfer clogging and enhancing the adaptability to dynamic operating conditions. In 1 m KOH, the catalyst achieves a 202 mV (η@10 mA cm −2 ) overpotential, with high stability of over 1000 h. The Pt/C||NiMoO 4 @CoFe-LDH anion-exchange membrane electrolyzer operates efficiently and stably under fluctuating operating conditions (1.70 V@1.0 A cm −2 , 30,000 cycles), providing a new paradigm for green hydrogen anode design in scenarios of fluctuating supply of renewable energy.

In situ evolved NiMo/NiMoO4 nanorods as a bifunctional catalyst for overall water splitting

Saman Sajjad,Chao Wang,Xianfu Wang,Tariq Ali,Tao Qian,Chenglin Yan

Due to their good conductivity and catalytic performance, Ni—Mo-based catalysts are well-established for highly effective water splitting. However, the know-how required to fabricate distinct interfaces and electronic structures for metal oxides is still a challenge, and the synergistic effect between metal and metal oxides that enhances electrocatalytic activity is still ambiguous. As described here, by controlling the lithium-induced conversion reaction of metal oxides, metal/metal-oxide composites with plentiful interfaces and prominent electrical interconnections were fabricated, which can boost active sites and accelerate mass transfer during electrocatalytic reactions. As a consequence, the superior catalytic activity of ECT-NiMo/NiMoO4 exhibited a low overpotential of 61 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction and 331 mV at 100 mA cm−2 for the oxygen evolution reaction. When integrated into a two-electrode system, the ECT-NiMo/NiMoO4 revealed a highly stable and efficient performance in overall water splitting. This work provides a promising approach to enhance the metallicity and electron redistribution of catalysts for numerous water-splitting applications and many other possibilities for energy storage devices.

Yanhui Song,Wenbo Sha,Meixiu Song,Peizhi Liu,Jiakang Tian,Hong Wei,Xiaodong Hao,Bingshe Xu,Junjie Guo,Jianguo Liang

Defect-rich metal-based nanomeshes have been regarded as potential effective catalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting, in which nanopores are beneficial to increase active sites and enhance the mass transfer. However, facile synthesis of metal-based nanomeshes still remains a great challenge. Herein, we report the cost-efficient ultrathin nickel molybdenum nanomeshes (NiMoO 4 ) for overall water splitting. The NiMoO 4 possesses outstanding oxygen evolution reaction property (239 mV@10 mA cm −2 ), together with an exceptional cycling stability. Notably, phosphorus (P)-doping endows the NiMoO 4 nanomeshes a superior hydrogen evolution reaction property (144 mV@−10 mA cm −2 ). We also prepare a double electrode system with NiMoO 4 and P-doped NiMoO 4 , and evaluate the performance of overall water splitting (1.68 V @10 mA cm −2 ). The key point of the processing route developed here is the synergistic effect between defect engineering and element doping, which provide a guiding insight for the development of novel catalysts for their practical applications.

Ultralow Ru-doped NiMoO4@Ni3(PO4)2 core-shell nanostructures for improved overall water splitting

Adel Al-Salihy,Ce Liang,Abdulwahab Salah,Abdel-Basit Al-Odayni,Ziang Lu,Mengxin Chen,Qianqian Liu,Ping Xu

The potential of sustainable hydrogen production technology through water splitting necessitates the rational design of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) bi-functional electrocatalysts . In this context, we initially synthesized and empirically evaluated ultralow Ru-doped NiMoO 4 @Ni 3 (PO 4 ) 2 core-shell nanostructures on nickel foam (Ru-NiMoO 4 @Ni 3 (PO 4 ) 2 /NF). The hydrous NiMoO 4 nanopillars were hydrothermally grown on NF, followed by successive RuCl 3 etching and subsequent phosphorylation processes, leading to the final Ru-NiMoO 4 @Ni 3 (PO 4 ) 2 /NF. The catalyst demonstrated impressive HER overpotential values of −14.8 and −57.1 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, with a Tafel slope of 35.8 mV dec −1 . For OER at 100 mA cm −2 , an overpotential of 259.7 mV was observed, with a Tafel slope of 21.6 mV dec −1 . The cell voltage required for overall water splitting was 1.43 V at 10 mA cm −2 and 1.68 V at 100 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the catalyst exhibited superior stability for 150 h, emphasizing its practical utility for long-term applications. Subsequent density functional theory calculations aligned with these empirical findings, indicating a low water dissociation energy barrier (Δ G b = 0.46 eV), near-zero free adsorption energy for HER (Δ G *H = 0.02 eV), and suitable free adsorption energy for OER (Δ G *OOH − Δ G *OH = 2.74 eV), alongside a high density of states near the Fermi level . These results, informed by both experimental evaluation and theoretical validation, highlight the potential of Ru-NiMoO 4 @Ni 3 (PO 4 ) 2 /NF as a high-performance catalyst for water splitting, setting a solid foundation for advancements in sustainable energy technologies.

Fabrication of NiO-NiMoO4/PPy microspheres as high-performance anode material for lithium-ion battery

Zhang Jun-Hong,Yue Haoguo,Ma Yueqiang,Han Xiao,Mei Jie,Zhao Jinsheng,Li Yan-Mei,Zhu Yan-Rong

In this work, the spherical NiO-NiMoO 4 composite was synthesized by solvothermal route followed by calcination, and then spherical NiO-NiMoO 4 /PPy composite was synthesized by in situ polymerization of pyrrole monomer. The NiO-NiMoO 4 and NiO-NiMoO 4 /PPy microspheres with a particle size of around 1–2 μm consist of nanorods and nanosheets. Hence, NiO-NiMoO 4 /PPy anode shows a higher delithiation and lithiation capacities than NiO-NiMoO 4 at each rate. At 0.2 A g −1 , NiO-NiMoO 4 only shows an initial delithiation capacity of ∼775 mAh g −1 , and the capacity only keeps 207 mAh g −1 after 160 cycles. Nonetheless, NiO/NiMoO 4 /PPy shows an initial delithiation capacity of ~ 884 mAh g −1 , and the capacity also maintains ~ 846 mAh g −1 even after 160 cycles. The corresponding capacity retention of NiO/NiMoO 4 /PPy and NiO/NiMoO 4 are 95.7% and 26.7%, respectively. The PPy modification is a direct and effective strategy to improve the reversible capacity and cycling performance of NiO-NiMoO 4 composite.
