Stabilization of perovskite phases and interfaces in stacked perovskite photovoltaics are critical for their efficiency, operational stability and perovskite solar modules (PSMs). Herein, A-site cation-size mismatch processed perovskite-composition films with less crystal defects are formed by incorporating larger cations formamidinium and methylammonium with smaller cations, i.e., potassium and cesium . The interface stabilization can be achieved by inserting Poly[bis(4-phenyl) (2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) amine], mesoporous alumina , phenethyammonium ligands and atomic-layer-deposition tin oxides at desired interfaces in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Thus, the interface defects, non-radiative recombination and ion migration can be remarkably suppressed, resulting in improvement of interface contacts and hole/electron transport. As a result, both cation-size mismatch and interface stabilization (CM-IS) strategies enable hysteresis-free, reproducible 21.9% and 16.9% efficient NiO x -based inverted PSCs and PSMs. Moreover, a high V oc of 1.16 V and 8.05 V can be obtained in large-area PSCs (1 cm 2 ) and PSMs (11.2 cm 2 ) with 7 subcells connected in series. Additionally, the measured T 85 lifetime (the time as a function of PCEs decrease to 85% of its initial value) of unencapsulated PSCs under continuous AM 1.5G light illumination is approximately 1000 h.

Nickel oxide (NiO x ) is considered to be an attractive hole transport material in planar inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Unfortunately, the further development of NiO x -based PSCs is severely restrained due to the poor interface quality between NiO x and perovskite layers. In this paper, a buried interface modification strategy using a polar molecule material 4,4-difluorocyclohexylamine hydrochloride (simplified as DFCHY) is introduced to improve the performance of NiO x -based PSCs. Theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that DFCHY plays a role in bridging the NiO x /perovskite interface, not only suppressing the high oxidation state of Ni 3+ and enhancing the conductivity in NiO x film, but also passivating buried interface of perovskite film and improving its crystallinity, further effectively reducing trap density and enhancing charge transfer at the interface of NiO x /perovskite layers. The champion inverted PSCs using DFCHY as a buried interface modifier achieve a power conversion efficiency of 17.08% with negligible hysteresis. Furthermore, the unencapsulated PSCs with DFCHY modification exhibit outstanding long-term stability, maintaining above 90% of their initial efficiency after 1000 h storage in a nitrogen-filled glovebox.

The passivation of perovskite bulk and heterointerface defects is one of the most significant ways to enhance the efficiency and operational stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). So far, ammonium-based alkylamine halides have been considered as effective passivation materials to reduce defects of the perovskite absorber layer. Herein, roles of long-chain alkylamine ligands (LALs) in triple-halide perovskites are systematically studied for achieving efficient NiO x -based inverted PSCs. Two kinds of LALs oleylammonium (OAm) and phenethylammonium (PEA), as perovskite bulk and interface passivation agents, respectively, are introduced. It is found that both OAm and PEA ligands cannot only assist their crystal growth with vertical orientation, but also suppress triple-halide perovskite bulk and interface defects. As precursor additives, OAm ligands can be used as organic spacers to assist the generation of the 2D@3D perovskite bulk crystals. 2D@3D/2D perovskite heterostructures are further formed when the 2D@3D perovskite bulk film is post-treated by PEA ligands. As a result, such strategies enable hysteresis-free and highly efficient NiO x -based triple-halide inverted PSCs.

3DOM NT-AH was obtained via synergistic reduction integrates Ni0/Ni2+ dual active centers and a NiO/TiO2 p-n heterojunction, enhancing electron transfer and charge separation to achieve a 16-fold increase in H2 evolution over unreduced 3DOM NT. Nickel oxide (NiO), owing to its tunable valence states and non-noble-metal cocatalytic properties, has shown great potential in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. However, challenges remain in achieving highly dispersed loading, precise valence regulation, and optimized interfacial structures. Herein, we establish the Ni 0 /Ni 2+ dual active centers and NiO/TiO 2 p-n heterojunction in three-dimensionally ordered macroporous NiO x -TiO 2 -AH (3DOM NT-AH) composite photocatalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen production. In this unique structure, Ni 2+ species are favorable for forming a tightly coupled interfacial p-n heterojunction with TiO 2 , thereby promoting interfacial charge separation and directional carrier migration, while metallic Ni 0 acts as an efficient electron sink and electron-transfer mediator, facilitating rapid electron extraction and transport. Meanwhile, the highly dispersed NiO x nanoparticles are intimately anchored on the 3DOM TiO 2 (3DOM T) framework forming p-n heterojunction, further enhancing interfacial electron transfer and suppressing the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The synergistic effect of the Ni 0 /Ni 2+ dual active centers and the p-n heterojunction makes that the optimized 3DOM NT-AH sample exhibits excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance, achieving a hydrogen evolution rate of 3.60 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is about 16 times that of the unreduced 3DOM NiO-TiO 2 (3DOM NT) sample. This work provides a promising strategy for the design of efficient non-noble-metal Ni-based photocatalysts. Download: Download high-res image (201KB) Download: Download full-size image

Ultrasmall Cu/Ni-NiOx nanoparticles (NPs) had been successfully prepared by attaching and growing Ni-NiOx NPs on the surface of Cu NPs and then uniformly dispersed onto graphene (G) surface. High-angle annular dark-field–scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) characterization confirmed that Ni-NiOx NPs were uniformly distributed on the surface of Cu NPs. The catalytic methanolysis of ammonia borane (AB) proved that Cu/Ni-NiOx NPs possessed high catalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution activity, and the highest turnover frequency (TOF) was 17.72 mol H2·mol–1 Cu·min–1. Comparative experiments revealed that the high catalytic activity originated from the abundant catalytic active sites of Cu/Ni-NiOx NPs. The attachment of Ni-NiOx on the surface of Cu NPs that dispersed on G (G-Cu/Ni-NiOx) can not only effectively improve the antioxidative performance of Cu NPs under ambient conditions but also promote the methanolysis of AB to produce H2.

NiOx is an inorganic hole layer that is widely used in perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). However, direct interfacial contact with the perovskite film induces severe photoluminescence quenching, and buried interface defects critically impede the PeLEDs from achieving excellent performance. In this paper, S = O and Na+ are engineered to form coordination bonds and ionic bonds with defect sites at the buried interface of the perovskite film by providing lone pair electrons and Coulomb force to reduce the nonradiative recombination loss. The effects of different sodium naphthalene disulfonates on the passivation of perovskite films and the performance of PeLEDs were studied. The results show that the perovskite film prepared on the sodium 2,7-naphthalene disulfonate (DS2–7NA) substrate achieves excellent passivation, effectively avoiding direct contact with NiOx. Consequently, the green emission Quasi-2D PeLEDs exhibit an external quantum efficiency (EQE) exceeding 10%, a maximum brightness of approximately 6000 cd m–2, and an extended operational stability of 181.9 min under external environmental conditions.

It is still a key challenge to find suitable materials and methods to obtain super capacitors (SCs) with high specific capacitance due to the difficulty of balancing low theoretical capacity of conventional carbon materials and the poor ion transportability of transition metal oxide. In this work, N Ni dual-doped porous carbon nanosheets (NiOx-NCNSs) are prepared through a novel way using original N-doped chitosan nanofibers and nickel nitrate to form honeycomb layered structure constructed by 2D fiber network as precursors. NiOx-NCNS exhibits a high specific surface area of 1847.4 m2 g−1 with a rich N content of up to 5.16 wt% and shows a higher specific capacitance of 614.6 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1 than that of carbon nanosheets of undoped Ni (NCNS) (427.5 F g−1). More specifically, the SC assembled using NiOx-NCNS electrodes achieves a high energy density of 20.3 W h kg−1 at a power density of 240.9 W kg−1, which is superior to most of the CNS-based SCs that have been reported. After 10 000 cycles, the symmetric SC retains approximately 85.61% of the initial capacitance. The strategy provided in this work probes the feasibility of high-performance SCs.

The reaction pathway and kinetics of cellulose hydrogenolysis to ethylene glycol (EG) catalyzed by nickel and tungsten combined with copper supported on magnesium aluminum spinel (NiO x -WO y -Cu/MgAl 2 O 4 ) were studied. Cellulose was hydrolyzed to glucose, which followed either the retro-aldol condensation to glycolaldehyde and erythrose or isomerized to fructose followed by retro-aldol reaction to dihydroxyacetone and glyceraldehydes. The derived glucose can also be hydrogenated to sorbitol. The intermediate products were subsequently converted to EG, erythritol, glycerol and 1,2-propanediol. The cellulose conversion, yields of EG and C 2,3 polyols were achieved 100, 53.1 and 62.7%, respectively. The simplified kinetic models were proposed and validated with the experimental results, indicating that the simpler first-order model could perfectly describe the hydrogenolysis of cellulose in the catalytic system. Hydrolysis of cellulose was demonstrated as the rate determining step independent of the reaction pathway, and high temperatures were favorable to the hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose. Activation energies results showed that high temperatures were favorable to the hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose.

In recent years, nickel oxide (NiO x ) is widely used as an excellent hole transport layer for the inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs), due to its decent hole conductivity, easy processability, and low cost. However, the photovoltaic performance and stability of NiO x -based PSCs are severely limited by the poor perovskite/NiO x interface. Herein, a versatile coupling agent di(dioctylpyrophosphato) ethylene titanate (NDZ-311) is introduced to improve the performance of NiO x -based inverted PSCs by suppressing nonradiative recombination and strengthening charge transfer at the perovskite/NiO x interface. Moreover, the chemical reaction between NDZ-311 and NiO x reduces the surface hydroxyl groups of NiO x film and avoids direct contact between perovskite and NiO x film, which mitigate material degradation caused by high-valence Ni ions and hydroxyl groups. As a result, the average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of inverted PSCs is enhanced from ≈18.01% to ≈19.92% and a maximum PCE of ≈20.39% is obtained. The unencapsulated PSC with NDZ-311 modification maintains 87.65% of their initial performance after 400 h aging test in air, much better than the control device (49.41% after 400 h). The work demonstrates the potential application of NDZ-311 for commercial PSCs, considering NDZ-311 is a cheap industrial material.

Nickel oxide (NiOx) nanocrystals have been widely used in inverted (p-i-n) flexible perovskite solar cells (fPSCs) due to their remarkable advantages of low cost and outstanding stability. However, anion and cation impurities such as NO3– widely exist in the NiOx nanocrystals obtained from calcinated nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2). The impurities impair the photovoltaic performance of fPSCs. In this work, we report a facile but effective way to reduce the impurities within the NiOx nanocrystals by regulating the Ni(OH)2 crystal phase. We add different alkalis, such as organic ammonium hydroxide and alkali metal hydroxides, to nickel nitrate solutions to precipitate layered Ni(OH)2 with different crystalline phase compositions (α and β mixtures). Especially, Ni(OH)2 with a high β-phase content (such as from KOH) has a narrower crystal plane spacing, resulting in fewer residual impurity ions. Thus, the NiOx nanocrystals, by calcinating the Ni(OH)x with excess β phase from KOH, show improved performance in inverted fPSCs. A champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.42% has been achieved, which is among the state-of-art inverted fPSCs based on the NiOx hole transport material. Moreover, the reduced impurities are beneficial for enhancing the fPSCs’ stability. This work provides an essential but facile strategy for developing high-performance inverted fPSCs.

Comprehensive Summary Formamidinium (FA)-based Sn-Pb perovskite solar cells (FAPb 0.5 Sn 0.5 I 3 PSCs) with ideal bandgap and impressive thermal stability have caught enormous attention recently. However, it still suffers from the challenge of realizing high efficiency due to the surface imperfections of the transport materials and the energy-level mismatch between functional contacts. Herein, it is demonstrated that the modification on buried interface with alkali metal salts is a viable strategy to alleviate these issues. We systematically investigate the role of three alkali metal bromide salts (NaBr, KBr, CsBr) by burying them between the NiO x hole transport layer (HTL) and the perovskite light-absorbing layer, which can effectively passivate interface defects, improve energy-level matching and release the internal residual strain in perovskite layers. The device with CsBr buffer layer exhibits the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) approaching 20%, which is one of the highest efficiencies for FA-based Sn-Pb PSCs employing NiO x HTLs. Impressively, the long-term storage stability of the unencapsulated device is also greatly boosted. Our work provides an efficient strategy to prepare desired FA-based ideal-bandgap Sn-Pb PSCs which could be applied in tandem solar cells.

The introduction of self-assembled molecular layers (SAMs) has recently brought breakthroughs to inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Among them, the NiOx/Me-4PACz hole transport layer (HTL) system exhibits remarkable potential for enhancing device performance. However, Me-4PACz suffers from inherent limitations, including uneven distribution, poor wettability with perovskite solution and limited stability. In this study, we introduce metformin hydrochloride (MFCl) and triaminoguanidine hydrochloride (TGCl) as internal molecular "bridges" between NiOx and Me-4PACz to address these issues. This strategy aims to enhance charge transport, strengthen the interfacial anchoring between NiOx and Me-4PACz, regulate the molecular organization of Me-4PACz, and optimize the buried interface. As a result, the crystallinity and quality of the perovskite layer are significantly improved, leading to enhanced device performance. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the modified device increases notably from 20.45% to 23.11% (MFCl) and 23.06% (TGCl), along with substantial improvements in operational stability.
