Efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) bifunctional electrocatalysts are critical for the development of zinc-air battery (ZAB). Unfortunately, conventional commercial catalysts usually display selective activity in only one reaction and cannot efficiently catalyze the two reactions at the same time. In this paper, porous carbon nanosheets loaded Co 4 N (Co 4 N/PNC) were prepared by pyrolysis of SiO 2 @ZnCo-ZIF. Due to the hierarchical pore structure, large specific surface area, abundant active sites, excellent electron transfer and mass transmission, the Co 4 N/PNC obtained at 920 °C (Co 4 N/PNC-920) exhibited outstanding ORR and OER catalytic activities. Furthermore, the assembled Co 4 N/PNC-920-based rechargeable ZAB displayed a discharge power density of 170.7 mW·cm −2 , a specific capacity of 801.1 mA·hg −1 and an excellent durability, implying that Co 4 N/PNC-920 could be utilized as a bifunctional and highly active catalyst in ZABs.

Multimetallic oxide configuration and hollow structure construction are effective strategies for the design of efficient electrocatalysts , which can regulate the intrinsic properties of the active sites, enlarge the specific surface areas and expose more active sites. In this work, hollow-structured CuCo-based ternary metal oxides supported nitrogen-carbon networks (HS-CuMCoO x , M = Fe/Zn/Ni) derived from ZIF-67 hollow spheres were fabricated through facile ion exchange and heat treatment. The prepared composites possess hollow configurations with homogeneously dispersed trimetallic active species on the shells. Among all the ternary metallic derivatives, hollow spheres supporting Cu, Fe, and Co oxides (HS-CuFeCoO x ) exhibited highest electrocatalytic activity towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The improved OER performance ascribed to the inherent electrocatalytic properties of the ternary metal active species and microstructure by hollow structure design and heat treatment, which offered an effective synthetic strategy for the fabrication of trimetallic oxide composites for as OER electrocatalysts.

The development of efficient, low-cost catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for advancing sustainable energy technologies such as water electrolysis. Stainless steel mesh (SSM) is a promising alternative to precious metal catalysts, yet the spatial distribution of active sites on its surface remains poorly understood. Here, we introduce an in situ strategy that leverages oxygen bubble evolution dynamics to visualize and quantitatively probe localized OER activity on SSM model electrodes in real time. Time-resolved optical tracking of gas bubbles enables direct determination of local reaction rates, revealing that curved regions of the mesh, which experience compressive strain, exhibit markedly enhanced OER activity characterized by accelerated bubble nucleation and growth. In situ electrochemical Raman mapping reveals that these compressive domains promote the phase transition of nickel hydroxide to catalytically active nickel oxyhydroxide at lower potentials, attributed to a reduced energy barrier arising from the lattice contraction accompanying this phase change. This work establishes gas bubble dynamics as a powerful, spatially resolved tool for quantifying intrinsic electrocatalytic activity and uncovers compressive strain as a key factor governing active phase formation on stainless steel electrodes.

Acid-etching strategy unlocks electrocatalytic potential of perovskite oxides. • H-LBO achieves a low overpotential of 213 mV at 10 mA cm - 2 . • Optimized electronic structure and oxygen vacancies boost OER activity. To advance sustainable hydrogen production, we developed an acid-etching strategy to enhance perovskite oxides for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This method preferentially removes A-site cations (La, Sr), accompanied by slight Ni loss, inducing A-site deficiency and oxygen vacancy while exposing B-site centers. The etched perovskite oxide (H-LBO) achieves superior OER activity with a low overpotential of 213 mV at 10 mA cm - 2 in 1 M KOH, outperforming pristine perovskite oxide (LBO, 285 mV) and commercial RuO 2 (389 mV). This work offers a simple approach to modulate surface defects and electronic structures for cost-effective, high-performance OER electrocatalysts. NiFe LDH exhibits excellent OER performance due to its unique layered structure. However, the limited density of active sites in NiFe LDH hinders further enhancement of OER performance. By introducing surface oxygen defects to modulate the surface functional groups and interfacial active sites of LDHs, the electrocatalytic reaction kinetics are effectively optimized. The introduced oxygen vacancies increase the interface active sites of the NiFe LDH catalysts, thereby improving the interfacial reaction rate and optimizing the catalytic performance. In this work, sulfate-intercalated NiFe 0.3 LDH with abundant oxygen vacancies was synthesized by a co-precipitation method. The abundant oxygen vacancy defects resulted in a reduction in long-range atomic order and crystallinity, leading to the formation of a crystal/amorphous structure. This structural modification optimized the mass transport process during OER, enhanced the electronic configurations of Ni and Fe, and improved their synergistic interactions, thereby increasing the catalytic activity. At a current density of 10 mA cm -2 , a low overpotential of 230 mV and a Tafel slope of 50.7 mV dec ‑1 were achieved. Furthermore, after 40 h of continuous cycling, the overpotential of the NiFe0.3 LDH sample exhibited minimal change. This work provides new insights into the rational synthesis of high-performance OER catalysts with vacancy defects using the co-precipitation method.

The development of efficient and durable non-precious metal catalysts is pivotal for advancing clean energy technologies. In this study, a phosphorus-doped cobalt-molybdenum-based composite micrometer arrays (CoP@MMoO 4 , M = Ni, Fe) were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal and phosphatization strategy. Unlike conventional approaches, the designed phosphatization process not only introduces phosphorus doping but also modulates the material’s microstructure and electronic properties, significantly enhancing the binding energy of active site. The optimized micrometer arrays facilitate effective electron transfer for excellent electrocatalytic performance. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the enhancement of intrinsic activity for micrometer arrays is attributed to the improved electrical conductivity and the strong interaction between O radical and P/Co. The optimized CoP@NiMoO 4 exhibits exceptional catalytic performance, with a low overpotential of 70.97 mV for HER and 204 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 , along with remarkable stability over 24 h. These findings highlight the pivotal role of phosphorus in engineering cobalt-molybdenum composites, offering a novel pathway for designing high-performance electrocatalysts for efficient HER and OER.

High entropy alloys (HEAs), known for their synergistic orbital interactions among multiple elements, have been recognized as promising electrocatalysts for enhancing the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Despite their potential, the facile and rapid preparation of HEA nanoparticles (NPs) with high electrocatalytic activity remains challenging. Here, we report an ultrafast synthesis of noble-metal-free FeCoMnCuAl HEA NPs loaded on conductive carbon fiber networks using a Joule heating strategy. The prepared HEA NPs exhibited a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure with an average size of approximately 25 nm. Synchrotron X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies were performed to investigate the atomic and electronic structures of the HEA NPs, revealing the co-presence of Fe, Co, Mn, Cu and Al elements as well as their different valences across surface and internal regions. The HEA NPs showed remarkable OER performance, exhibiting an overpotential of 280 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a low Tafel slope of 76.13 mV dec −1 in a 1.0 M KOH solution with high electrochemical stability, superior to commercial RuO 2 electrocatalysts. This work provides a new approach for synthesizing nanoscale noble-metal-free HEA electrocatalysts for clean energy conversion applications on a large-scale basis for practical commercialization.

The effective activation of lattice oxygen can be triggered by modulating the metal–O covalency to activate the lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) for the OER. In this work, we perform a systematic and comprehensive DFT screening across the entire lanthanide series to modulate the Ni–O covalency by constructing Ln–O–Ni orbital gradient coupling. We found that the Ni–O covalency can be maximized by the Gd(4f)–O(2p)–Ni(3d) gradient orbital coupling structure formed by Gd doping. Moreover, this structure effectively activates lattice oxygen for reaction participation by elevating the Ni 3d/O 2p band centers and promoting the formation of oxygen vacancies. Therefore, the OER mechanism changes from the adsorbate evolution mechanism to LOM, accelerating the generation of *OO intermediates, which, in turn, significantly lowers the reaction energy barrier. The as-prepared 2% Gd–NiO sample exhibited remarkable stability (180 h) and a low OER overpotential (235 mV@10 mA cm–2), outperforming most of the reported Ni-based alkaline OER electrocatalysts. Moreover, the Zn–air battery constructed with 2% Gd–NiO achieved an excellent energy conversion efficiency and cycling stability. This work provides a theoretical framework for the design of advanced LOM catalysts.

The development of bifunctional non-noble metal electrocatalysts with high activity and stability remains a significant challenge. In this work, Fe@Ni aerogels with core-shell structure were synthesized by sol-gel method. The unique network-like architecture and amorphous core-shell structures of Fe@Ni aerogels provide abundant defects and unsaturated sites. Moreover, the tunable surface electronic structure enhances the availability of active catalytic sites, resulting in outstanding catalytic performance for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). For OER, the FeNi 2 aerogel requires only an overpotential of 215 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , along with a low Tafel slope of 31.7 mV dec −1 and excellent stability. For MOR, its specific and mass activities were as high as 213.6 mA cm −2 and 106.8 A g −1 , respectively. In addition, this study also elucidated the mechanism of the excellent bifunctional catalytic activity of Fe@Ni core-shell aerogels, which provides a new idea for the development of other high-activity non-precious metal electrocatalysts.

Improving the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance or replacing OER with the value-added conversion of biomass is of great significance for the green hydrogen energy production. In this work, bimetallic species-decorated laser-induced graphene (LIG) was fabricated and demonstrated as the self-supported electrodes towards efficient OER and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation reaction (HMFOR). Three-dimensional LIG was obtained via one-step irradiation process under ambient conditions, and active metal species were then introduced through electrodeposition, with Ni-based catalyst as the primary catalytic material and Fe and Co as modified metals. Among, LIG-NiFe electrode achieved an extremely low overpotential of 241.7 mV at a current density of 20 mA/cm 2 for OER and demonstrated long-term stability. This could be attributed to the promoted formation of Ni 3+ active centers by Fe modified and the intrinsic porous structure of LIG providing an enhanced surface area. As for LIG-NiCo, due to the low onset potential of Co for HMF, it could achieve 99.6% HMF conversion and yielded value-added 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) with a selectivity of 87.1%. Coupled with the merit of facile fabrication of LIG framework, this study demonstrates that LIG-based electrodes assume great practical application value in electrocatalytic reactions. Perovskites (ABX 3 ) are promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts for their highly intrinsic activity. The in-depth understanding and the adjustment of dynamic reconstruction of active phases for perovskites in OER are still a daunting challenge. Here, a refined A-site management strategy is proposed for perovskite oxides, which facilitates the surface reconstruction of the B-site element based active phase to enhance the OER performance. Electrocatalyst LaNiO 3 displays a dynamic reconstruction feature during OER with the growth of a self-assembled NiOOH active layer, based on the in situ electrochemical Raman technology. Precise A-site Ce doping lowers the reconstruction potential for the active phase and the dynamic structure–activity correlation is well established. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that A-site Ce substitution upshifts the O 2p level for greater structural flexibility with optimized oxygen vacancy content, thereby activating the B-site atom and promoting the active phase reconstruction. These results suggest that A-site management prompts the B-site element based active phase dynamic reconstruction via engineered X-site content as a bridge. Therefore, indicating the strong correlation of each-site component in perovskite oxides during OER and deepening the understanding of the fundamental processes of the structural transformation and further benefiting the accurate design of high-efficiency perovskite OER electrocatalysts.

The escalating global energy crisis has intensified research efforts toward developing heterogeneous structures capable of addressing the sluggish kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction in electrocatalysis. In this study, a novel strategy for the design of highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts was proposed. Uniform Ni nanolayers were successfully deposited on Nb 2 CT x /CNT hybrid supports through a combination of CVD and magnetron sputtering techniques. The resulting Ni/Nb 2 CT x /CNT@NF catalyst demonstrated exceptional electrocatalytic performance in 1 M KOH. For HER, it achieved remarkably low overpotentials of 41 mV@10 mA cm −2 and 196 mV@100 mA cm −2 . Similarly, for OER, the catalyst exhibited outstanding activity with overpotentials of 299 mV@20 mA cm −2 and 337 mV@50 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, the catalyst maintained stable performance at 20 mA cm −2 for 48 h without significant degradation, highlighting its excellent long-term stability. The superior catalytic performance can be attributed to several key factors: (1) The uniform distribution of Ni nanolayers enhances intrinsic conductivity and increases the density of active sites; (2) The incorporation of CNTs expands the reaction interface, facilitating charge and mass transfer; and (3) The electronic interaction between Nb 2 CT x and Ni further optimizes the catalytic kinetics.
