In view of the serious carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which cause significant harm to human beings and the environment. Therefore, developing rapid adsorption and efficient analytical methods are research topic with practical significance. Herein, an innovative MOFs@COFs-based molecular trap materials were prepared with hierarchical porous core–shell structure and used as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coating, which combined with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to achieve the efficient separation, capture, and detection for 7 PAHs in real samples. The possible adsorption mechanism was systematically verified and explained. Under the optimized conditions, the method developed in this experiment had a wide linear range (0.005–400 µg·L −1 ) with a good linear correlation coefficient (R 2 > 0.9984), low detection limits (0.002–0.405 µg·L −1 , S/N = 3) and low quantification limits (0.005–1.351 µg·L −1 , S/N = 10). The relative standard deviations of individual fibers and different batches of fibers were 0.26–3.64% and 0.40–5.91%, respectively. Besides, the fiber showed higher enrichment capacity and extraction efficiency for PAHs compared to commercial SPME fibers and other material fibers, and exhibited excellent acid-base stability and reproducibility. This work provided a favorable synthetic pathway for the preparation of MOFs@COFs composites by layer-modified assembly synthesis strategy, showed excellent practical applicability as a SPME fiber coating combined with HPLC, and could be realized to provide technical support for future studies on the separation, adsorption, and analysis of PAHs in the petrochemical industrial zone of the Yellow River Basin.

Nanoplastics (NPs) are emerging pollutants which can adsorb large amounts of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) and be ingested by aquatic organisms. NPs interact with dissolved organic matter (DOM) and result in significant impacts on the bioaccumulation of HOCs in the actual environment. For the first time, the joint effects of two complex matrices on the bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to Daphnia magna ( D. magna ) were studied by modeling calculation. The complex matrices, nano-sized polystyrene (PS) and/or humic acid (HA), were under environmentally realistic concentrations. A biodynamic model was modified and the uptake fluxes from all exposure pathways were quantified using the experimental data. A flux estimation showed that the bioaccumulation amounts at equilibrium were mostly dependent on dermal uptake (≥99.3 % of the total). The PS matrix would retard the intestinal uptake process in D. magna , especially for the less hydrophobic PAHs; while the HA or the HA-PS matrix would facilitate the mass transfer of PAHs from the matrix to lipids in the gut. Moreover, the biota matrix accumulation factor (BMAF) were calculated to verify the biodynamic model. This work is helpful to clarify the bioaccumulation effects of PAHs in complex environmental systems.

A diatomite supported graphene oxide composite (GO@Dt–NH2) was fabricated and explored as a solid-phase extraction adsorbent coupled with high performance liquid chromatography to determine the trace hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (2-hydroxy-naphthalene, 2-hydroxy-fluorene, 1-hydroxy-phenanthrene, and 1-hydroxy-pyrene) in urine samples. The fabricated composites were characterized by X-ray powder diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy. GO@Dt–NH2offered enhanced adsorption affinity towards the analytes compared with the bare diatomite. The amount of graphene oxide and the factors affecting solid-phase extraction were investigated in detail. Under the optimized conditions, the method gave good linearity (0.30–200 ng/mL) and a low detection limit (0.10–0.15 ng/mL) for the hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The average recovery for spiked urine samples with three levels ranged from 90.6% to 100%. The intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations were in the range of 1.8–6.4% and 2.7–11.8%, respectively. Besides, the GO@Dt–NH2provided enrichment factors of 18–20 and superior purification ability. The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine samples from smoking volunteers. Keywords:graphene oxide;diatomite;solid-phase extraction;hydroxyl polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons;urine

In order to investigate the contamination caused by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in seawater, Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticle graphene (Fe3O4 MNG) was prepared and modified by micelles to act as an adsorbent for solid-phase microextraction. The method showed satisfactory precision, reproducibility and linear response (R2 > 0.9981) over the concentration range of 0.02–2.0 μg L−1. Limits of detection of 16 PAHs ranged from 0.009 to 0.018 μg L−1 (S/N = 3). The recovery of the established method (79.01–99.67%) was higher than that of the conventional solid-phase extraction method (29.27–88.04%). The enrichment factors of the PAHs were in the range of 53.85–103.64. The proposed method was successfully applied for the determination of PAHs in seawater samples collected from 56 different sites along the Bohai Sea in North China. The total concentrations of PAHs in seawater ranged between 54.90 and 8137.44 ng L−1.

For hydrophobic organic contaminants , physiologically based in vitro methods may need to include a sorption sink to simulate in vivo intestinal uptake. We compared PAH bioaccessibility in contaminated soils using five in vitro methods including physiologically based extraction test (PBET), in vitro digestion assay (IVD), method from Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN), unified bioaccessibility method (UBM), and fed organic estimation human simulation test (FOREhST) in the absence and presence of Tenax as a sorption sink. The PAH bioaccessibility without Tenax were pretty low with values ranging from below detection limit to 13.4%, indicating the limited capacity of these in vitro models to accommodate PAHs. With addition of Tenax, bioaccessibility increased to 0.59–75.5% for all PAH congeners. Even with the dominant effect of sorption sink, bioaccessibility values significantly varied among all the five methods with DIN result being the highest at 7.0–34.8%. Based on multiple linear regression, Tenax, incubation time, and bile contents are identified to be the most important factors in controlling bioaccessibility. The understanding of these key factors for bioaccessibility is highly necessary to standardize in vitro methods, which helps to refine the assessment of health risk through exposure to ingested contaminants.

Biomimetic cytochrome P450 for chemical activation of environmental carcinogens is an efficient in vitro model for evaluating their mutagenicity and ultimately acquiring the metabolites that cannot be easily accessed by conventional routes of organic synthesis. Different kinds of mutagen derived from polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by metalloporphyrin/oxidant model systems have been reported, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. Herein, we have for the first time demonstrated an effective surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) protocol to study the dynamics and biomimetic metabolic behaviors of pyrene (Pyr) in the presence of various oxygen donors. Quantitative information on the relative concentration of Pyr and its metabolites in the biomimetic system can be extracted from the SERS spectra. On the basis of our results, we conclude that the oxidative metabolism of Pyr is highly influenced by the types and concentrations of oxygen donors, leading to the formation of 1-hydroxypyrene and dioxygenated products. Besides, the addition of an appropriate amount of an organic solvent can promote the formation of secondary oxidation products. These results offer valuable insights into the dynamics of PAHs metabolism and the regulation of their metabolic pathways in biomimetic activation. In comparison to traditional liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, the present SERS approach is more suitable for high-throughput evaluation of the metabolic process and kinetics of PAHs. We anticipate that this approach will enable a more general and comprehensive tracking of metabolic dynamics and molecular mechanisms involved in the biomimetic activation of other xenobiotics, such as procarcinogens, promutagens, and drugs.

Arsenic (As) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are highly toxic, carcinogenic and teratogenic, and are commonly found in soils of industrial sites such as coking plants. They exert environmental stresses on soil microorganisms, but their compounding effects have not been systematically studied. Exploring the effects of compound contamination on microbial communities, species and genes is important for revealing the ecological damage caused by compound contamination and offering scientific insights into soil remediation strategies. In this study, we selected soil samples from 0 to 100 cm depth of a coking site with As, PAHs and compound contamination. We investigated the compound effects of As and PAHs on microbial communities by combining high-throughput sequencing, metagenomic sequencing and genome assembly. Compared with single contamination, compound contamination reduced the microbial community diversity by 10.68%–12.07% and reduced the community richness by 8.39%–18.61%. The compound contamination decreased 32.41%–46.02% of microbial PAHs metabolic gene abundance, 11.36%–19.25% of cell membrane transport gene abundance and 12.62%–57.77% of cell motility gene abundance. Xanthobacteraceae , the biomarker for compound contaminated soils, harbors arsenic reduction genes and PAHs degradation pathways of naphthalene, benzo [a]pyrene, fluorene, anthracene, and phenanthrene. Its broad metabolic capabilities, encompassing sulfur metabolism and quorum sensing, facilitate the acquisition of energy and nutrients, thereby conferring ecological niche advantages in compound contaminated environments. This study underscores the significant impacts of As and PAHs on the composition and function of microbial communities, thereby enriching our understanding of their combined effects and providing insights for the remediation of compound contaminated sites.

The cold plasma (CP) technique was applied to alleviate the contamination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) in this investigation. Two different CP treatments methods were implemented in the production of beef patties, to investigate their inhibition and degradation capacity on PAHs. With 5 different cooking oils and fats addition, the inhibition mechanism of in-package cold plasma (ICP) pretreatment was explored from the aspect of raw patties fatty acids composition variation. The results of principal component analysis showed that the first two principal components accounted for more than 80 % of the total variation in the original data, indicating that the content of saturated fatty acids was significantly positively correlated with the formation of PAHs. ICP pretreatment inhibited the formation of PAHs by changing the composition of fatty acids, which showed that the total amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids decreased and the total amount of monounsaturated fatty acids increased. Sensory discrimination tests demonstrated there were discernable differences between 2 CP treated samples and the controls, utilization of the ICP pretreatment in meat products processing was expected to achieve satisfying eating quality. In conclusion, CP treatment degraded PAHs through stepwise ring-opening oxidation in 2 reported pathways, the toxicity of PAHs contaminated products was alleviated after CP treatment.

The atmospheric pollutants polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) and phenols emitted by the coking industrial area (CIA) have seriously polluted the surrounding soil. Therefore, localized soil screening levels (SSLs) around CIA in Shanxi Province were derived and used for the assessment of soil health risk and groundwater pollution risk. Meanwhile fine-scale spatial probabilistic health risk assessment (PHRA) was conducted based on localized parameters. The results indicated that children under the age of 12 are at a significantly higher carcinogenic exposure risk. The concentration of phenol emitted by CIA into the surrounding soil via atmospheric deposition is higher than those of PAHs, posing a threat to groundwater quality. Groundwater conservation-based SSLs derived from wastewater discharge standards can be used to evaluate the potential pollution of phenols on groundwater. The highest risk for phenol and p-cresol was found to be located within the range of 0.9–1.3 km and 200°–260°, while for PAHs it was within 0.9 km and 90°–200°, neither in line with the prevailing wind direction or areas of high wind speed. BaP, the only substance with an acceptable carcinogenic risk, was primarily concentrated within 0.9 km and 145°–200°. Fine-scale spatial PHRA provides a more accurate understanding of the diverse risk distributions and offer reliable support for precise risk management strategies.

Household coal combustion is identified to be the second largest emission source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in China. In this study, ferroferric oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) was used as a coal burning additive to reduce PAHs emission from coal combustion in a household coal stove. The results showed that Fe 3 O 4 participated in the coal combustion process. The addition of Fe 3 O 4 reduced the release of PAHs during the coal combustion process, and could improve the residence capacity of ash residue to these PAHs. Toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) of PAHs in flue gas from combustion of coal mixed with Fe 3 O 4 was less than that from the raw coal combustion. For a typical combustion temperature of 850 °C, the TEQ of PAHs for the mixture of coal and 2.0 wt % Fe 3 O 4 decreased 21.98% compared to that for the raw coal. The abundant active surface oxygen species originated from the phase transformation of iron oxides probably accelerated the cracking of PAHs, and hence led to the reduction of PAH emissions and their TEQ. The study could help to develop new technology for reduction of PAHs emission from household coal combustion.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from cigarettes are one of the main pollutants affecting public health. Herein, a cellulose cigarette filter with three-dimensional (3D) hierarchically porous structure was fabricated using a natural cellulose Juncus effusus (JE) fiber, whose pore size was well controlled by biocompatible polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) using a simple dip-dry method. The adsorption capacity and mechanism of the PVP–JE filter tips (PJF) against PAHs were investigated in detail. Compared with conventional cellulose acetate filter tips (CAF), the cellulose PJF were superior at filtering and adsorbing of PAHs from mainstream smoke with the removal efficiency of 61.79 %, which was 22.57 % higher than that of CAF (39.22 %). The ternary structures including polymer filter membrane, 3D network, and interconnected channels were demonstrated as the main roles for highly effective removal of PAHs. The JE-based cellulose cigarette filter can be a promising candidature to broaden the application range of polysaccharide in pollutant elimination.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) threaten 30% of drinking water sources worldwide. Compared to single strains or physicochemical approaches, microbial consortium provides a more stable and adaptive solution for complex groundwater remediation. Existing construction strategies focus too much on static degradation rates but overlook microbial migration under hydrodynamic disturbances. This leads to overestimations of dynamic remediation performance. Informed by the unique structural and functional traits of microorganisms, this study developed a microbial consortium capable of anchoring in groundwater porous media and enhancing interfacial bioavailability. Three strains were selected from 100 candidates to form the consortium: Agrobacterium pusense BN2 (anchoring via slime layer), Pseudoxanthomonas beigongshangi FL2 (bioavailability enhancement), and Pseudoxanthomonas beigongshangi BN8 (high degradation). This consortium degraded 16.02 mg/L of phenanthrene. It was found that Agrobacterium pusense BN2′s slime layers exhibit a dual regulatory mechanism: β -Sheet/ α -Helix proteins form a highly stable corona that drives microbial consortium transport toward the pollutant source; the polysaccharide matrix anchors the microbial consortium to the pollutant source and resists water flow impact to regulate transport and anchoring. In a saturated soil microcosm, the microbial consortium increased the bioavailability of difficult to degrade bulk crystalline PAHs to 39.1 mg/kg. Ecological acute toxicity decreased by 88.3% compared to the phenanthrene contaminated control group. This mechanism results from the cooperative effects within the microbial consortium. It is also linked to the increased abundance of key genes in the degradation pathway. This study provided a new design perspective and paradigm for the design of application oriented microbial consortium, and offered a framework to construct remediation strategies based on bacterial functional structures for PAHs removal in groundwater dynamic environments.
